Education9 Success Tips For Poor Students Who Desire Academic Excellence by Harbdulrasaq(op): 3:29pm On Oct 01, 2015
Whether we believe it or not, it is an unarguable fact that access to finance goes a long way in determining a student’s academic performance while in the university system.

Now, it is also true that some students have failed to justify the huge financial investments their parents have made in their education, effectively throwing resources down the drain. Similarly, some students have beat the odds to emerge academic gladiators with little or no resources at their disposal.

Yes, some students ride latest cars, wear expensive clothes and accessories, eat the best restaurants but still end up with poorer grades than those who have only a pair of worn-out clothes, eat 1-0-1 or worse.

Still, the bottom line is that the average student will do better with access to resources. A student with a full stomach, who is well dressed and can afford the necessary textbooks and study materials is already set up to perform well. Students will no financial backing often have to depend on magnanimous friends to settle assignment costs, scrounge roommates’ pots and die in the library to use antiquated books.

A poor student is not judged on a different scale from a rich student, meaning he or she starts at a disadvantage and is expected to emerge with something worth celebrating out of that situation.

So, how does a poor student survive the system? I will be talking from my own experiences at the Ahmadu Bello University(ABU), Zaria, where I emerged the second best graduating student, with 2 Class Upper Division, in my department without buying a single textbook throughout the four-year duration of my degree.

You too can achieve it with these 9 tips:

Never miss lectures – one habit you must never cultivate in the university is missing lectures. Even if you study at a university where the lecturers don’t grade your for attendance, you’ll miss a lot by not being present when your lectures explains topics and your course mates contribute to the discussions. You also stand the risk of missing out on ‘shot-guns’, sudden tests that could ruin your chances of a good grade in a course. At least you won’t have to beg and bribe any lecturer.

Always take notes – many students stay in class and refuse to take lecture notes for reasons best known to them. Even if you are not fast enough to get everything, jot down the key points of every lecture and build on them later. Interestingly, lectures often say what they expect in the exams during their classes. These notes can save you the need to photocopy/type handouts and textbooks.

Google and Wikipedia are your friends – even if you don’t have money for textbooks, there are a billion academic resources available online. Simply knowing how to use Wikipedia and Google will give you access to a gazillions of academic material. Cultivate the habit of Googling the parts of a lecture you don’t understand, immediately after the lecture is over. As you read online, make further notes under what you got from the lecture.

Always participate/head group assignment projects – when you are given group assignments, always try to be active and if possible, head the groups. First of all, you will most likely not have to pay and secondly you gain more knowledge than the passive participants and this may come in handy in the exams.

Join/create study groups – study groups are very important because they help you to rub minds with your peers, learn in a relaxed environment and test your knowledge before the exams in an informal, relaxed setting. You can learn a lot from your colleagues.

Have a specific reading time and stick to it – it would be good if you can give yourself a reading timetable and stick to it. It will be tough at first, but the habit will stick if you struggle to maintain it and you’ll be glad you did. Find out the time (and conditions) you think you best assimilate and make it your study time. Personally, I like reading outside, in open spaces at night.

Exploit library off-peak periods – many times we find the libraries overcrowded or the books we need already borrowed. To avoid this, try to use the library at times when you know others will not be available. One of these times is in the afternoons when most of them will be sleeping, planning to come in the evenings. This will make the books available for you.

Buy your provisions in bulk as semesters start – this may sound funny, but you need to ensure that food is never a problem for you because a hungry stomach will prevent the brain from assimilating anything. As soon as you arrive from the holidays, stock a lot of non-perishable items, especially if you are allowed to cook in your hostels. It is cheaper to buy in bulk when you still have some money on you than to spend in bits.

Create time for school, God, love and fun – a clear mind is important to your success in school. This is why you need to make sure you find time to relax your mind from school stress, interact with other students and God. Though a sexual relationship is not advised, having a working relationship with someone intimate (platonic or otherwise) often works positively.

In addition to the above, you might want to consider learning a trade which can fetch you a little income while in the campus.

What matters is your will to excel, not how much resources you have at your disposal.

One day, the struggles will be history and some of those who are privilege now may be coming to you for employment.

PoliticsPHOTO: Germany-based Businessman Shot Dead In Lagos by Harbdulrasaq(op): 2:42pm On Sep 26, 2015
It happened in Iyana Ishashi, along the Lagos-Badagry expressway. Mr. Barry Ndulue, a middle-aged man was coming back from a business trip to Ghana on Sunday, September 20, 2015. Unknown to him, he was being trailed, according to police accounts. Once he got to that lonely part of the expressway, the assailants leveled up and began to shoot into the car he was travelling in. When the operation ended, Barry, a businessman based in Germany, lay dead in a pool of his own blood.

Curiously, neither the driver of the chattered car nor his (Barry) business partner, identified as Paul Obioma Nnago, with whom he was travelling, was hurt in the bizarre, tragic incident. Surprisingly also, the unknown gunmen took only the phones of the occupants of the car and fled the scene.

Already, the Lagos State Police Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, has commenced investigation into the death of the businessman and father of three.

When Saturday Sun visited the residence of the deceased at 401 road, Festac Town Lagos, family and friends kept trooping in and out of the house to condone with the family. His widow was seen surrounded by her mother and immediate relatives who kept consoling her. His first son who was obviously shattered by the news of the death of his father sat at a corner of the house battling to control tears.

The other two who are between the ages of two and five, took it upon themselves to open the door for sympathizers. Obviously oblivious of what was going on, the two kids, instead of sharing in the gloom, were rather cheering them up by playing around them.

The late Ndulue’s mother in-law who spoke on behalf of the family pleaded that they would decide as a family before they could share the details of the matter with the public. “We know that the world will like to hear our story but it is also important for my daughter to consult with the family before taking to the press”, she stated.

One of the relatives who spoke with Saturday Sun but chose to remain anonymous said that he would get the consent of the elders of the family before talking to the press. “At the moment we do not want to talk to the media without the consent of my elder brother. You can go to the police and get all the details of the matter. The two persons who were with him in the car are currently in police custody.

We are not suspecting anyone especially his friend who was arrested. He lives on the same street and they have done a lot of things together. We pray that the police will quickly conclude their investigation so that we can bury our late brother. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”

Describing him as a simple man, one the neighbours said that Barry returned to Nigeria less than a week before the incident. “He has been away for the past eight months. He was a very quiet person that prefers to stay indoors with his beautiful kids anytime that he was in Nigeria.”

On the possible reason why Paul and the driver are being detained, a senior police officer at SCID Panti said that it was necessary to be sure that the duo were not the mastermind of the murder. “We hope to unravel the reason why Barry was killed while his friend Paul and the chattered car driver were left unhurt.

Why did the assailants pick only their phones? There is a probability that one of them alerted the assassins of their present location and to hide the person’s identity their phones were taken.

“The Homicide section of the SCID after analyzing their call log will be able to determine their involvement in the matter. We will be able to uncover what happened and if they were not indicted, they will be released.”

Confirming the attack, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor said: “We learnt that he (Barry) was returning to Nigeria through Seme border when he was attacked by unknown gunmen. His body had been deposited in the mortuary while the case is currently being investigated by detectives attached to the state CID, Panti.”

He assured that the suspects, who are currently in detention, will be released as soon as it is confirmed that they are innocent.

NYSCNYSC Now Allows Students To Choose States For Deployment by Harbdulrasaq(op): 1:08pm On Sep 09, 2015

In the wake of recent attacks and unrest across the states of Nigeria, the NYSC board has now included in the registration procedure of NYSC members to choose at least 3 states which they would love to be deployed from which one will be finally selected for them by the board.

I think the NYSC has started to become liberal and more democratic with this initiative but it will stand against the main motive for which the programme was established!

The disadvantage of this development will be very disturbing; as some states will be favoured at the expense of the others.

However, the corps members have restricted Geo-political zones depending on the school they graduated from!

Julius ‘The Genius’ Agwu and his wife, Ibiere, may well be two of the happiest people in the world as we speak, as they got the rare opportunity to meet the British royal family.
Agwu and Ibiere have some pictures with the royal family and we think of them as awesome.

The couple also met some of the world’s top celebrities like Steven Spielberg, Whoopi Goldberg, Usain Bolt, Angeline Jolie and husband Brad Pitt.

This is great stuff, but not to worry as you can also be a guest of the royal family if you want.
All you need do is visit the internationally renowned wax museum, Madame Tussauds, to see wax replicas of your favourite celebrities.
