Business / Christmas: Excitement In Cross River As 'abakaliki Rice' Sells For N14,500 by Harbdulrasaq(m): 11:25am On Dec 13, 2016 |
Demand for Nigerian-grown rice has risen in Calabar amidst rising cost of imported grains. Local rice looks set to take over kitchens this Christmas, according to an investigation by News Agency of Nigeria. “It is cheaper, more affordable and even sweeter than foreign rice. So I cannot spend as much as N26, 000 just to buy just a bag of rice simply because it is foreign,” said Calabar resident Richard Nku. “In this Christmas, I am going for locally made rice and that is what my family and everybody in my house will eat until January,’’ he said. A rice farmer, Fidel Egoro, told NAN, “We are under serious pressure to deliver on demand and that is why we cannot accept people paying us through banks. “We do not have the time to go to the bank, so we prefer cash to save time; many people have placed orders for rice and we are trying to meet up before the close of the season,’’ he said. With increased demand, it is thought prices of local rice might shoot up before Christmas. “One bushel of rice (equivalent of half bag) sells for N7,250, while two bushels (equivalent of one bag) sells for N14,500). “This may increase before the close of the season, depending on changes in cost of production,’’ he said. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/12/christmas-excitement-in-cross-river-as.html cc lalasticlala 7 Likes 2 Shares |
Sports / Gernot Rohr Reveals One Key Reason Why Mikel Will Leave Chelsea By January by Harbdulrasaq(m): 9:45am On Dec 13, 2016 |
Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel is to leave Chelsea Football Club in January, according to Super Eagles Manager, Gernot Rohr. Mr. Rohr told newsmen in London on Friday that the Chelsea forward had to leave the club because “he cannot stay in a club he is not playing” “He is moving come January transfer window. He cannot stay in a club he is not playing. So he has to move,” Rohr said, adding that some Super Eagles players who are not playing at their clubs may also leave the clubs. Mr. Rohr spoke shortly after a meeting with Nike officials in London in connection with Super Eagles official kits. The meeting was also attended by NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, Mikel Obi and Eagles centre forward, Odion Ighalo, among others. He expressed delight at the sample of Eagles new kits presented by Nike, saying that they were “very professional”. He, however, said the Eagles New Jerseys should be light blue to ensure visibility of the players and light in texture in view of the hot weather in Africa. The Super Eagles manager said he paid a “private” visit to Eagles goal keeper, Carl Ikeme in Wolverhampton to wish him a quick recovery from his injuries. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/12/gernot-rohr-reveals-one-key-reason-why.html cc lalasticlala 3 Likes 1 Share |

Unlike Soyinka, US Professor Fulfils Promise, Eats Live Bug On TV Over Trump's Victory Dr Sam Wang, a polling expert who said he would eat a bug if Donald Trump won more than 240 electoral votes during Tuesday's election has kept to his words. Wang, a Princeton University professor, feasted on crickets in honey on Saturday morning to settle the bet following Trump's shocking election victory. The data scientist was reminded of his wager while discussing the election and why predictions went wrong with host Michael Smerconish on CNN's 'Smerconish'. Back on October 19, Wang had tweeted: 'It's totally over. If Trump wins more than 240 electoral votes, I will eat a bug.' President-elect Trump ended winning the election after capturing Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes, putting him over the 270 threshold needed to win. In total Trump had 290 electoral votes while Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton had 228. Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka also vowed to rip his green card apart should Donald Trump win the US Presidential elections, but he is yet to honour his words, but instead with a long missive trying to play around the bush.
