Sports / Ooni Of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi Visits Obafemi Martins At His Home, Nigerians React by Harbdulrasaq(m): 4:09pm On Jun 07, 2016
Over the weekend, Nigerian footballer Obafemi Martins received a visit from His Royal Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi at his home in Lagos State. Obafemi shared a video of the Yoruba Monarch seated in his home during the visit and Nigerians seem to have an issue with this. They feel someone so important should not be paying just anyone a visit but rather be visited at his Palace in Ile Ife, Osun State. See reactions from twitter as you continue. Guess people forget he was a regular dude before he became royalty...anyway, read the tweets and tell us what you think..

Education / Possible Effects Of Scrapping Post-utme And Pegging Cut-off Mark At 180 by Harbdulrasaq(m): 12:34pm On Jun 03, 2016
Following some of the decisions taken at the 2016 JAMB Combined Policy meeting which include the official announcement of the 2016 cut-off mark as 180 for Universities, Polytechnic and Colleges of education and the scrapping of Post-UTME, many candidates are asking a lot of questions with regard to how the admission process for this year is going to run.

Having examined the situation, we would like to point out some factors that may likely come in to play in 2016 admission process.

First, one thing that will likely be a fall-out of this new development is the fact that the cut off-mark of top institutions like UNIBEN, UNILORIN, OAU, UI, UNILAG may shoot up to 220, 240 or even 250. However, no institution will go below 180.

The responsibility of placing candidates in schools will now reside with JAMB. However, JAMB has to first confirm the requirements of institutions before placing candidates in such institution. For instance, if UNIBEN decides that their cut-off mark for this year is 250, it is only candidates who applied to study in that school and score up to 250 will secure admission in UNIBEN.

Similarly, since the bench cut-off mark is 180, JAMB may decide to re-distribute candidates who scored up to 180 to other institutions (who knows, it could be a university, polytechnic or College of education since they all have the same cut-off mark) if the institution they originally chose have reached its admission quota or if such candidates UTME score falls below the set cut-off mark of their specific institutions.

The scrapping of Post-UTME does not necessarily mean that institutions cannot conduct other forms of screening, it only means they cannot conduct another form of examination similar to UTME. So schools may decide to use oral interview or verification of documents to screen candidates.

The scrapping of post-UTME will equally save candidates the cost of purchasing their school's post-UTME form and going through the usual hassles associated with it.

However, all these factors will be expected to play out when ASUU, ASUP and NCEE accept the outcome of the 2016 JAMB Combines Policy meeting.

Since these bodies are yet to express their stance on this, we will only wait to see how it plays out at the end of it all.

Now, lets know your opinion on this or what you think the admission process will be like.

Crime / Female Corper Nabbed With "Igbo" By NDLEA; As She Cries... "I Ashamed Of Myself" by Harbdulrasaq(m): 10:47am On May 07, 2016
NYSC is not opportunity for you to do boyfriend and girlfriend or engage in bad gang, it's a period for you to serve and build a reputation for yourself, which will guide your life, moving into the future.

The Sokoto State Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday arrested a female Youth Corps member serving in Zamfara with 9 kilogrammes of Indian hemp.

NDLEA said, “We will charge the lady to court as soon as we are through with our investigation.”

The Commandant of the agency in the state, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, told NAN that the suspect was serving in Gumi area of Zamfara and was arrested along Sokoto-Gusau Road in Sokoto. He said the lady had confessed that she was initiated into the business by a fellow corps member.

He said the suspect had boarded a luxury bus from Onitsha in Anambra to Sokoto, from where she would board another bus to Gumi in Zamfara, when she was arrested at a check point in Sokoto.

The commandant said investigation had already commenced to fish out all those who initiated her and their source of supplies, in order to prosecute them.

The suspect told NAN at the NDLEA Command, Sokoto, that she regretted her action, saying she did not know how her parents would feel about her arrest.

“I am ashamed of myself; this is my first time of engaging in this illegal business. I strongly advise fellow corps members to avoid falling into the temptation of such crooked means of making money," she cried.

Politics / 3 Nigerians Nabbed, 8 Policemen Wounded In A Violent Drug Raid In Mumbai, India by Harbdulrasaq(m): 10:16am On May 05, 2016
PHOTO: 3 Nigerians nabbed, 8 policemen wounded in a violent drug raid in Mumbai, India

Following growing complaints of Nigerian nationals peddling drugs in the stretch between Byculla an d P D'Mello Road, and adjacent to railway tracks of Masjid and Sandhurst stations, the crime branch with over 70 officials raided the area on April 29. While they found 20 foreign nationals, only two were arrested and the remaining escaped. The operation left seven policemen injured after the foreign nationals pelted them with stones. The third Nigerian was arrested yesterday, May 4.

The operation involved around 80 policemen from various crime branch units who had come together after receiving various reports of increased instances of foreigners peddling drugs in the area stretching from P D’Mello road to Byculla.

"We had received reports that the foreign nationals roam around the area in big groups making it difficult for small police teams to nab them. Hence, we decided to form a number of teams of at least four to five officers in each and take them by surprise," said a senior crime branch officer.

While the police team had the element of surprise, the drug peddlers had the advantage of knowing the area very well.

"We conducted the operation after midnight and took private vehicles to intercept them. However, the accused were comfortable with the topography of the area and ran towards the railway tracks between Masjid and Dockyard road station and escaped. As the area is not well-lit and has high traffic of fast trains, we could not pursue them for long," said Atulchandra Kulkarni, joint commissioner of police (crime).

Sources also said the accused were highly violent and athletic.

"One of them jumped from a 30-foot high bridge," said another officer.

He also said the accused picked up stones lining the tracks and pelted them at the officers, slowing their progress and also injuring many. The attack on the policemen by drug peddlers of Nigerian origin is not the first, said another officer who was part of the operation.

The arrested accused have been identified as Ifunanya Ginika Minke (37) and Igwe Chikwneni Emaniyal (24),(pictured) both Nigerian nationals. Sources said that Minke, who was jailed previously was out on bail and is the alleged mastermind.

"They were found with packets containing cocaine, each weighing 20 grams," said Mr Kulkarni. The officials also found that accused would camp in a scarcely populated building owned by the Bombay Port Trust. "It is a four-storey building where only two families live and they would first meet there and then head out in taxis to areas around Wadibunder," said an officer.

The police also seized seven mobiles, a digital weighing machine and Rs 44,000 in cash.

"The operation left eight policemen injured with senior inspector Santosh Bagwe in a near critical state. Some of them ambushed Bagwe and would have crushed his head with a stone but ran away after we fired a round to frighten them," said another officer.

Bagwe is undergoing treatment at JJ Hospital along with senior inspector Ajay Sawant (unit V) who sustained injuries to his leg and ankle. Sources have said that the crime branch was contacting various departments to curb the menace of drug peddling in Wadibunder area.

"We will write to the railway police force (RPF), the railways, BMC and even the local police to help us put up preventive measures. For instance, we want the railways to increase lighting near the tracks leading to Masjid, Sandhurst and Dockyard road stations," said a senior officer

The third Nigerian suspect (not pictured) was arrested yesterday, May 4 by Crime branch officials for drug possession and peddling. The accused identified as Ugwu Ugochukwu Stanley (33) was caught from near P D’Mello road. While he did not have any drugs on his person, sources say he is part of the same gang of about 20 people and was a close aide of the two arrested last week. The police has also booked the accused under the attempt to murder sections of the Indian Penal Code.

"The foreign nationals are very athletic and they will do anything to escape arrest. Many of our teams were attacked previously too when they tried to nab them. In fact one of the accused bit the hand of a policemen and he needed stitches," said a crime branch officer.

Sources say the accused Ginika Minke and Igwe Chikwneni Emaniya have not yet revealed where they had stayed while in the city.

"They just point to slums and railway stations, knowing that we can’t trace them. In fact, they even fear their own brethren and are scared that if they reveal details, they will be killed by the other gang members," he added.

Sources say the area near Wadi Bunder has become a hotbed for drug peddlers.

"Most of them are foreign nationals and they openly sell cocaine and don’t display any fear or worry about being caught by the authorities," an officer said.

To curb these activities, the police is also approaching other departments to look at bettering the facilities in the area.

Politics / Whatsapp Banned In Brazil by Harbdulrasaq(m): 1:02pm On May 04, 2016

A Brazilian judge has ordered mobile-phone carriers to block access to WhatsApp for 72 hours throughout the country, the second such move against the messaging application in five months. Monday’s decision affects WhatsApp’s 100 million-plus users in the country. The reason for the order is not known due to legal secrecy in an ongoing case in the court.

It is the second time since mid-December that WhatsApp has been the target of a blocking order. The service was shut down for 48 hours on December 15 last year after Facebook failed to comply with an order, although another court interrupted that suspension shortly afterward. Judge Marcel Maia Montalvao of Sergipe state is the same judge who in March ordered the imprisonment of a Brazil-based Facebook executive for failing to comply with an attempted block on WhatsApp.

He was jailed and subsequently freed. Twitter user Acaua Tavares reacted with the Portuguese acronym “PQP”, roughly equivalent to “WTF?” in English, an agency reported. “WhatsApp blocked again, PQP! That’s Brazil,” he wrote. Many commenters reacted with a single question: “Again?”

Officials blamed the company of continuously failing to share information on WhatsApp users for an investigation into drug trafficking and organised crime. Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook chief executive, was “stunned” by the “extreme decision”. In a statement, WhatsApp said the company is “disappointed at the decision” after doing the utmost to cooperate with Brazilian tribunals.

Crime / 2 DSTV Guards Arrested For Raping 7 Years Old Girl In Lagos by Harbdulrasaq(m): 7:08pm On Apr 13, 2016
Two DStv security guards, who allegedly gang-raped a 17-year-old girl, were on Tuesday in Lagos granted N1 million bail each.

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, also granted the duo two sureties each in like sum as part of the bail conditions.

The Magistrate, Mr W. B. Balogun, ordered that the sureties must deposit N250, 000 each with the court’s registrar, adding that one of the sureties must have a landed property in Lagos.

The accused — Solomon Ichoja, 23, and Geoffrey Arve, 20 — are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and rape.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Cyriacus Osuji told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 8 at about 9.00 p.m. at No. 7, Olosa St., Victoria Island, Lagos.

He said the accused, security guards at DSTV headquarters in Lagos, gang-raped the teenager.

Osuji said the offences contravened Sections 262, 285 (1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

He adjourned the case to May 11 for mention.
