Kingdemu:Was the asphalt layer previous laid but eroded due to road failure or the asphalt layer had not been done before in the past? A road of 500m without side drainage(s) and culvert inclusive of earth works, stone base laying , mc1 priming and asphalt laying would cost approximately a 25million. The asphalt layer ( 40mm thickness after compaction) alone is approx 360 tonnage at a cost of N40,500/ton which translates to 15million naira. |
Wapgod:The project is currently on hold till the return of the client. |
Another day another building collapse in Nigeria. |
tonididdy:Cement is the major building material in Nigeria because its used in producing blocks, concrete and wall rendering. I am looking at using alternatives to reduce cement in our buildings like stabilised interlocking bricks in place of sancrete blocks in building our homes and also using rib slabs in place of solid slabs. Stabilized bricks do not need to be rendered (plastering) meaning you can reduce a significant chunk of cement from your building construction by not plastering |

123readygo:It doesn't work like that, i am looking in the direction of using alternative building materials to reduce the cement content of our buildings. Material like stabilised earth blocks is a very good alternative Check the thread were we use it for one of our buildings under construction although we are still in the foundation stage. https://www.nairaland.com/6506750/edo-build-construction-diary-4-bedroom |

allen113:When I talk about reducing ceement content, I don't mean reducing the mixed ration but rather using alternative building materials like stabilised earth blocks The use of stabilised earth blocks reduces the need for cement rendering on the surface of the blocks due to the aesthetics of the blocks itself. Also the blocks are produced with very little cement content compared to sancrete blocks. Check this thread we intend to use the stabilised earth blocks for the ground floor construction https://www.nairaland.com/6506750/edo-build-construction-diary-4-bedroom |
We need competitors in the cement industry in order to drive down the cost of cement. As a civil engineer and builder I am already looking at ways to reduce cement contents in my buildings due to the rising cost of cement. |

In today's world, it's no longer a function of the traditional knowledge obtained in the four walls of an educational institution. Self improvement and learning is the new gold |
Bigfish121:We have been in practice since 2012 |
Bigfish121:From primary concrete technology it is known that the fine aggregate acts as a filler between the course aggregate in the concrete while the cement acts as a binder. Sand and stone dust are both fine aggregates but due to cost, sharp sand is the most economical fine aggregate. There is a research done by a msc student in an Indian university who concluded that the best replacement for sharp sand with stone dust is a 50% replacement. |
Bigfish121:The coaches of blocks used above the foundation level varied due to the topography of the site. We had areas with 4 coaches and areas with 6 coaches above the foundation. For the ground floor we used 14 coaches of blocks for the purpose of getting a substantial headroom. |
