Policemen at the Iju Ishaga Police Division, Lagos State, have asked the father of a three-year-old girl to provide a vehicle to facilitate the arrest of a suspected kidnapper. The girl allegedly escaped abduction on Wednesday in the Toyinarea, Iju Ishaga, while she was returning from church with her parents.

PUNCH Metro learnt that a suspected kidnapper, identified simply as Abayomi, hadwanted to snatch the girl from her father, who raised the alarm. While he was being quizzed by a mob, who responded to the distress call, Abayomi reportedly confessed that he worked for one Emmanuel. He was said to have been beaten up and handed over to policemen at the division.
A resident, who did not want his name in print, said two accomplices escaped from the scene. He alleged that the division was handling the matter with levity, adding that they requested the father of the girl to provide money for fuel.
He said, “The suspect said he lived in the Jafar area and that he was sent by his boss, Emmanuel. While the father of the girl was challenging him, two of his gang members surfaced.
People went after them, but it was only Abayomi that was caught.“He disguised as a mad person. We cautioned people from lynching him and he was taken to the police station.
Unfortunately, the police did not make any move to arrest the man he named.“They demanded fuel money from the father of the girl. There are about five vans in that station.”
The father, Olawale Raji, however, said the policemen told him that there was no available police vehicle to facilitate the arrest and asked him to arrange for a bus.
Raji, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday, explained that the suspect had given the police details of the kingpin, but he needed N5,000 to charter the bus.
He said, “My wife and I were coming back from the church around 6.30pm on Wednesday. I carried our child. As we were walking by the roadside towards the bus stop, the man (Abayomi) approached me and rubbed his palms on my daughter's head.“I asked him what the matter was and he laughed. It was when people came around that he confessed that he was a kidnapper. He said once he rubbed his hands on his victim’s head, they would both disappear.“

The policemen said there was no vehicle they could use and asked me to provide a transport means that will take us to the address of the boss the suspect gave. I was surprised.
They asked me to come back, but they are still insisting that I should provide a vehicle. I will need up toN5,000 to charter a bus.”

In a voice recording of the suspect allegedly captured by one of the eyewitnesses and obtained by our correspondent, Abayomi, indeed, mentioned one Emmanuel as his “boss.”
The suspect, who spokein Yoruba, said, “I did not abduct any child. I am from Abeokuta (Ogun State).
I just came back from a travel. It was my boss who sent me to abduct children. His name is Emmanuel. This is my first time.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer,ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, promised to get back with comments.
