Hello all, which one would you advise someone go for? A year masters program with unpaid Co-op, or the thesis option which is 20 months. Knowing fully well you'd gain Canadian experience with the Co-op but a year PGWP....

GiS is good. Infact, a laid off Geologist previously (worked for Schlumberger, Calgary) had to retrain at SAIT by taking the BAPT program. I no longer remember where he works after the BAPT program..
Thanks for the reply, the thing is i plan on going for my masters in Canada and i plan to stay after, I've got a BTech in remote sensing and GIS, now I'm actually undecided about the Msc graduate program i should go for amongst integrated petroleum geosciences, computer science and Geoscience information system, spatial analysis, masters in remote sensing and GIS and the likes. I actually prefer petroleum geosciences but i feel I'll be limited only to the oil and gas industry, and you said the oil and gas industry has not been doing so great past years, GIS is wide you with various fields in the agricultural sector, urban and regional planning, engineering and so on. I'd like you to advise me please.

The oil industry in Canada has been struggling since the oil wahala of 2014. Over 70% of Canada's oil is in Alberta, and out of that 80% is bitumen/heavy crude. This means it is expensive to mine. Canada's major producers need a break even price of circa $50 a barrel. I am sure you know what crude oil prices are going for nowadays.

I was affected by the glut in 2015. Moved away from Alberta to work in a different industry in Sask. My current employer somehow pushed me back into oil related projects all over Saskatchewan. I was happy these projects were small producers mining light crude with lower production costs.

However, the moment this covid began plus the Saudi/Russia issue, oil prices took a further beating, so these light crude producers have started cutting back too. Just about 15 min ago, I received an email about more oil related projects being cancelled. I have been receiving such emails since last week. I have kept myself busy working on non-oil projects.

I am not sure if this is an industry you would like to get into. I had the believe that things would return to the way they were pre 2014 era, but 6 years later, the industry is still struggling coupled with the fact that renewable energy is picking up steam . This is probably why damilola1978 encouraged you to switch to Reliability Engineering. With Reliability or Mech, you can get a job in the O&G plus other industries. If just O&G, then you will be restricting yourself to one particular industry.
What about remote sensing and GIS job prospects sir?

Education / Re: Is Geophysics A Good Course To Study by Heltinking(m): 11:15pm On Apr 12, 2020
olawalepopoola:
I am a PhD holder in Geology.
I will advise you to study geology if you have the opportunity but if not go for geophysics.
My reasons:
1. Geophysics is an area of specialty in geology. As a graduate of geology you can go for M.Sc in Geophysics but as a geophysics graduate you can't go for M.Sc.
2. Secondly as a graduate of Geology, you can have M.Sc in
a. Applied Geophysics (You can specialise in environmental, hydro and engineering geophysics)
b. Seismology
*c. Remote Sensing and GIS*
d. Marine sciences
e. Petroleum Geology
f. Petroleum Engineering
g. Geotechnical Engineering
h. Highway Engineering
I. Water resources Engineering
j. Soil science/Engineering
k. Environmental Sciences
l. Astronomy
m. Mining
There are many more.
Geosciences have better prospects than Engineering
What MSc can you go for as a remote sensing and GIS analyst? Can you go for any amongst the listed?
