Published January 3, 2020 Jerome Edward Nnachi, Abakaliki A five-year-old pupil of the Immaculate Heart Conception School, Uwalakande, in the Okpoitumo Autonomous Community, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has reportedly died after taking a dewormer. The deceased boy’s mother, Mrs Ukamaka Nwome, told Southern City News that her child was healthy before he was given the dewormer, Albendazole, by some workers of the Offia Oji Health Centre. She added that her son, Jerome, initially rejected the medicine, but following the decision of some of her family members, who wanted him to partake in the vaccination, the tablet was administered to the boy, which led to his death shortly after he ingested the pill. She added that after the boy ingested the pill, he became unconscious and all efforts to resuscitate him proved abortive. Nwome stated, “He was quickly rushed to a medical centre, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor. “My son did not complain of any ailment before he took the pill; I regret the manner in which he lost his life.” The victim’s paternal grandmother, Mrs Mbam Nwite, also blamed those around during the incident for ignoring the boy’s reaction to the pill. She described the situation as an unpleasant one, but attributed it to fate. The officer-in-charge of the health centre, Mr Paulinus Ngwuta, said the health workers did not have any hand in the boy’s death as the pill was administered by the victim’s relatives. He stated that Albendazole, which was meant for the treatment of a neglected tropical disease, was donated by an international non-governmental organisation, the Carter Centre. According to him, the drug was distributed across the country, adding that the boy initially refused to take it, but eventually did on the insistence of his relatives. He stressed that after the family members learnt of the child’s refusal, they asked the health workers for the “with the assurance that a friendly approach would be adopted to administer the drug.” He said based on the plea, the pill was released but shortly after the health workers had gone out of the centre, the boy’s relatives screamed and upon inquiry, it was discovered that he had died following his relatives’ action of forcing him to take the pill. Ngwuta stated, “After the distributors had gone out of the place, suddenly the boy relatives’ shout attracted their attention and in order to render a helping hand, the child was rushed to our centre, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor. “The problem should not be associated with the medicine, because such an incident has not been heard about in other parts of the country where it is in use.” When contacted, the Police Relations Officer in the state, DSP Loveth Odah, said the report of the incident had not reached her office as of the time of filing this report. https://punchng.com/five-year-old-boy-dies-after-taking-dewormer-in-ebonyi/ |

Published January 1, 2020 The Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria has said the self-styled pastor, who allegedly slaughtered a student of the Lagos State University, Segun Philips, is not its member. PUNCH Metro had reported that the 400-level undergraduate of the Department of Theatre Arts, LASU, Favour Daley-Oladele, after a short visit to her parents in the Mowe area of Ogun State, departed for school on December 8, 2019, but while on her way, she went to see one Owolabi Adeeko, said to be her boyfriend, at an undisclosed location. Owolabi allegedly lured Favour to the Ikoyi-Ile area around Apomu and Ikire in Osun State, where he connived with his mother and Philips to kill and use the 22-year-old’s body parts for money rituals. Philips reportedly used a knife to slit Favour’s throat, ripped her chest open, removed her heart and breasts, and used them to prepare a concoction for Owolabi and his mother to eat. However, the church in a statement by its Chief Public Relations Officer, Apostle M. O. Adeyemi, stated that there was no record that Philips was associated with the church or its officers in the Irewolede/Isokan Local Government Area of Osun State, where he allegedly committed the heinous crime. Adeyemi stated, “We have contacted all our officers in the zone and they said they did not know him or his church. Besides, our youth fellowship members went as far as locating his church and came with the reports, including photographs, that there was no signpost or imprint of the C&S in his place of worship.” Meanwhile, Mrs Bola Adeeko, the mother of the 23-year-old, Owolabi has denied involvement in the murder. Bola claimed that she was deceived by her son and Philips that the heart of a goat was used to prepare a concoction for her and Owolabi. She explained that the pastor asked her to make a sacrifice by feeding many persons, unknown to her that he had made a secret pact with Owolabi to use a human heart for the concoction. She said she gave the pastor N210,000 to buy a goat whose meat would be shared with residents of the community where the church is located. She denied involvement in Favour’s killing, describing it as wickedness. Bola stated, “I did not know anything about the girl’s killing. I was surprised when the police told me that my son had committed murder. “I wasn’t aware that the concoction given to me was made with human parts. I am devastated. In fact, I have not eaten anything since Friday, when I was arrested.” https://www.punchng.com/icymi-i-was-paid-n210000-to-use-lasu-undergraduate-for-money-rituals-pastor |

By NAN 01 January 2020 | 8:05 am The Kwara Government on Tuesday in Ilorin inaugurated a 13-man Minimum Wage implementation Committee for the state. The committee has three weeks to work and give the government direction, with recommendations that would assist it to successfully implement the new minimum wage. Mr Kayode Alabi, the state’s Deputy Governor, represented Gov. Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq where he noted that the last time wage was reviewed in the country was in 2011. He said that it was evident that a review was necessary despite the prevailing economic challenges. AbdulRazaq charged members of the committee to be patriotic in handling the assignment and look at ways of domesticating the minimum wage Act not to have adverse effects on the developmental plans geared towards building and repositioning the economy of the state and also not erode the envisaged gains the workers crave for. “As a government, we are mindful of the fact that the expectations of the workers are high, the government is therefore poised to attend to this matter with all seriousness and fairness,” he said. He emphasised, “the cardinal interest of the committee, the generality of the workers, the organised labour and the entire populace of the state should be about the growth of Kwara”. He called on the committee to identify new sources of revenue and take into cognisance of the existing expenditure from where some savings could be made in order to mop up a fund that would be channelled towards funding the wage increase. The governor listed five terms of reference which included the immediate and remote circumstance surrounding the agitation of the civil servants for the payment of N30,000.00 minimum wage in Kwara, the actual rate being paid presently. “The ability of the state government to pay the wage to the civil servants in view of the prevailing economic realities at both federal and state levels, the financial implication and sustainability of paying the wage by the state government and any other recommendation/observation that could assist the government in taking a realistic position on the agitation of civil servants,” he said. Responding on behalf of the members of the committee, the Chairman and state Commissioner for Finance and Planning, Mrs Florence Oyeyemi, appreciated the government for giving them the opportunity to serve to promise that they would work assiduously. She said that members of the committee were drawn from the government and various labour unions. https://m.guardian.ng/news/minimum-wage-kwara-govt-sets-up-implementation-committee-to-deliver-in-3-months/

Published December 31, 2019 Daud Olatunji, Abeokuta The self-acclaimed pastor of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Solution Chapel, Ikoyi-Ile, Osun State, Segun Philips, said he was paid N210,000 to use the final year student of the Lagos State University, Favour Daley-Oladele for money rituals. His action was after Favour’s boyfriend, Owolabi Adeeko, had smashed her head with a pestle. The pastor confessed that he was the one, who slaughtered and removed the breasts, heart and other vital organs from Favour’s body. Philips disclosed this in an exclusive interview with PUNCH Metro at the police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, on Monday. He stated that the organs were used to prepare a concoction for Owolabi and his mother. He, however, said the concoction was prepared with human parts without the knowledge of Owolabi’s mother. When asked if he slaughtered the victim, Philips said, “It is true; I slaughtered Favour with a knife. I was the one, who removed her heart, breasts and other vital organs, so that we could use them for rituals. “But, I was not the one, who smashed her head with a pestle. Owolabi did that.” He, however, exonerated Owolabi’s mother, saying they deceived her that they would do something different. Philips stated, “She was not aware that we used human parts for the concoction I gave her. “I prepared the concoction for her and her son because I was broke and I needed money. I demanded N250,000, but I was paid N210,000. “I was called by God, but I think I have lost the calling because of what I did.” The 23-year-old Owolabi reportedly connived with the 42-year-old self-acclaimed pastor to kill Favour. Owolabi, who was arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command in Ikoyi-Ile, Osun State, was said to have confessed to the police that he sought Philips’ help for money rituals. The Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, had said, “The deceased was reported to have left home to an unknown destination since December 8, 2019, and had not been seen since then, hence, she was reported missing by her parents at the Mowe Police Station.” Copyright PUNCH. https://bc.marfeelcache.com/statics/i/ps/cdn.punchng.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/29232540/Favour-The-suspects.jpg https://www.punchng.com/icymi-i-was-paid-n210000-to-use-lasu-undergraduate-for-money-rituals-pastor |
There are different parenting styles and each has its own advantages and disadvantages: authoritative . authoritarian, permissive, toxic, slow parenting, over parenting etc. In authoritative (democratic), d advantages outweigh the disadvantages, u must explain to the child y u are beating him/her, it will help the child academically, self reliant, out spoken, the child is mentally and emotionally balanced, etc. Avoid excessive beating as that would create fear, anxiety in the child. |

Kwara State government should try and implement the 18k minimum wage first and use it to calculate the proposed 30k minimum wage, otherwise it will not make any difference. The current minimum wage in Kwara state is 11k, that's one of the many effects of Saraki/ Ahmed administration |
