Throwback:
The term is not "deciding to quit after OND/ND", but "choosing not to enrol for HND".

However, once you decide to enrol for HND after the mandatory requirement of having a 2yr diploma and at least 1yr work experience, you would have spent a minimum of 5yrs to acquire the HND from the starting point of passing your WAEC O'levels.

If one achieves the HND from the 3yr NCE route with 1yr work experience, it would have taken 6yrs to attain from the starting point of passing WAEC O'levels.

So this begs the question why should an inferior qualification require more years to attain than the superior bachelor's degree of 4yrs that requires the same starting point qualification of WAEC O'levels?

Did UK not originate the HND that also feeds into the Bachelor's degree programme, yet it must always be achieved at 1year less than the university bachelor's? Same thing applies to British colonized Ghana and Kenya.

Whatever the external route taken to attain a Bachelor's, the total years of scholarship outside of the university in addition to the top-up years inside of the university, must be equal to the number of years it requires to attain such bachelor's by an entry level university student.

This is because the qualifying requirement for entry into the feeder institutions, and the requirements for entry into the university is the same O'levels. The feeder institutions only allow you to break your studies into parts/milestones that have their own certificates. You can then choose to stay off for some time before you continue to the next part, until you eventually close it out with the final part in a university.

Ultimately, you would have spent the same 4yrs of scholarship that a purely university path to the bachelor's degree would have afforded, except that you opted to take a route that allows you to break at different qualifying points, and work with those qualifications.

This is not applicable in Nigeria. Rather, a feeder qualification like the HND takes a minimum of 5yrs, when the university bachelor's it feeds into takes 4yrs from the same O'levels start point.

It is for this anomaly of earning HND at a year more than a B.Sc instead of a year lesser, that you have all the arguments about equality vs superiority between HND and B.Sc. An argument that does not exist in UK, Ghana or Kenya, because such anomaly does not exist in those countries between their HND and B.Sc.

HND takes 5 years bro. upon admission for ND programme which is a prerequisite for HND you must go for a year post ND Industrial training after the completion of the former. then after a year training you will be eligible for HND programme at any polytechnic or direct entry into university.
2yrs of ND + a year IT + 2yrs of HND =5years
u can c where the line of dichotomy is drawn. u earn the ND certificate after 2 year, u don't need to include d 2 years since u have been awarded d certificate, which means u are done with that level of education. Y d division? HND only take 2 years + 1 year IT. it's advisable to go for DE immediately after d ND program, HND is just a waste of time and besides 200 level in university is greater HND. University deals with mental ability and not technical. I rest my case

I still do not understand your argument.

Can one obtain HND without first obtaining OND or a 2yr University Diploma, plus minimum of 1yr work experience?

Does it not take a minimum of 5yrs to obtain HND post WAEC O'levels? Or does the HND exist in isolation and can be obtained without the initial OND?

As it takes 3yrs to obtain your NCE from an O'levels state, so does it take a minimum of 5yrs to obtain HND from an O'levels state. Both qualifications feed into the university degree at varying direct entry points.

That you took the NCE route to a university, is the same way some take the OND or HND route to a university Direct Entry, except you chose to start afresh from the entry level of a university programme.

The argument I have made on this topic is why should it take a student 5yrs to obtain the inferior HND when the superior B.Sc is 4yrs, when the starting point for both programmes is that you have the qualifying WAEC/O'levels certificate.
In a simple and clear term, HND doesn't take 5 years since u can decide to quit after your ND program. University programme is not run like that. Besides, there are aims and objectives for setting up various higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. ND & HND are technical certificates just d way we have NCE technical. Ask the policymakers and curriculum developers, they will explain better.

Do you know the meaning of the phrase "post O'levels"?

After O'levels, how long does it take to earn HND (say Accounting)?

After O'levels, how long does it take to earn B.Sc (say Accounting)?

Is SIWES not also constituent in the 4yrs of a basic Bachelor's degree?
were u not awarded the ND certificate upon the completion of your 2 year programme? if Yes, u don't need to add that 2 to your 2 year HND programme. I spent 3 years pursuing NCE before my Bsc/Ed and M.ed. Does that mean d 3 years spent for NCE should be added or subtracted from my degree programme?
NB: I did both SIWES and TP due to the nature my course of study.

This is one of the issues that show how confused, clueless, and useless a country Nigeria is.

- Why do we have HND to be a 5yr programme post O'levels, while the superior general B.Sc/B.A is a 4yr programme post O'levels?

-Why is it that only the Nigerian HND requires 5yrs post O'levels to acquire?

UK HND is 3yrs post O'levels.
Ghana HND is 3yrs post O'levels.
Kenya Technical Diploma is 3yrs post O'levels.

None of the above countries, including UK that originated the HND, have the conflicts of superiority that exist in HND vs B.Sc/B.A.

That is because they are clearly defined and one act as a stepping stone to the other. The lesser qualification requires lower years of scholarship, while the superior qualification requires more years of scholarship.

But in Nigeria, you spend 5yrs to earn HND Accounting, but spend 4yrs to earn B.Sc Accounting.

A very confused education sector.
Point of correction, HND is 2 year program. Y did u include SIWES or IT and 2 year spent for ND?

EducationRe: 10 Grammatical Jargons Often Used By Nigerians. by highbee02: 7:33am On Nov 03, 2019
gimmehear:
10 grammatical jargon often used by Nigerians.

In Nigeria, people use a lot of grammatical jargon daily and most this jargon are/were/is believed to be correct when view in the English man’s way, but interestingly, most of this jargon often have no sensible meaning when searched for in the dictionary.

Below are some compiled words.

(1)Installmentally:

This “word” is a favourite of many Nigerians, but, sadly, it simply does not exist. You won’t find it any reputable dictionary. The correct thing to say when “installmentally” comes to your mind is in instalments or by instalments.

(2)Plumpy:

Nigerians use “plumpy” when they want to say that someone is chubby or slightly fat. The correct expression is plump.

(3)Disvirgin:

This particular “word” is used severally on a daily basis, especially by Nigerian men when they intend saying that a woman has lost her virginity to a guy. The correct word to use, however, is deflower, because “disvirgin” is not a word depicting that meaning.

(4)Crosscarpeting or cross-carpeting

This is a favourite of Nigerian politicians and political analysts alike. They use it when they want to say that a politician has dumped his political party for another party, usually a rival party. The right terms to use when describing this scenario are party switching, defection and crossing the floor and not “cross-carpeting” or “crosscarpeting.”
Go-slow: The word go-slow exists, but not in the way Nigerians use it.

(5)A “go-slow,”

in the peculiarly Nigerian context, is a situation in which road traffic is very sluggish due to vehicle queues. However, go-slow in the English language actually means an industrial tactic used by employees whereby they intentionally reduce activity, productivity and efficiency in order to press home some demands. When this happens, you say that work in the office, factory or organization is at a go- slow. The correct terms to use when road traffic is very sluggish due to vehicle queues are traffic jam, traffic congestion, gridlock, and (less technically) hold-up, not “go- slow.”

(6)Cunny

“Cunny” is not found in authoritative dictionaries, but it can be found in some slang dictionaries. Over there, it is a slang used to refer to a woman’s v**ina. The correct term to use is cunning (which is used to describe someone that is being deceitful or crafty) and not “cunny.”

(7)Opportuned

There is nothing like “opportuned” anywhere in the English language, but that has not stopped its blatant use by all and sundry in Nigeria, including journalists and writers. The correct word is opportune. The word opportune is an adjective; therefore it has no past tense. An adjective has no past tense. However, some verbs can function as adjectives or adverbs in a sentence. These verbs are called participles and they do have past tenses. They are not pure adjectives. Examples of participles are fattened, amused, disgusted, mystified, overwhelmed, upset and bored. Be that as it may, opportune is a pure adjective and not a participle, therefore it has no past tense. Opportune means appropriate or well- timed.

(coolAlright

“Alright” is a misspelling of the term all right. All right is used when you want to say that something is adequate, acceptable, agreeable or suitable. To hardcore English language linguists, “alright” is not a word. However, its usage is gaining traction and it’s increasingly becoming acceptable. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary – which is considered the gold standard among American English speakers – has recently drawn a lot of criticisms for its permissiveness when it began indexing some otherwise colloquial and street language terms, including “alright.” Most linguists disagree with the gradual acceptance of “alright” as a word by the public and even the media, while those in the minority are “alright” with it.

(9)Wake-keeping

“Wake-keeping” exists only in the imagination of a few English speakers. As a matter of fact, there is no such thing as “wake-keeping.” The correct word is wake and not even “wake-keep.” Both “wake-keeping” and “wake-keep” are ungrammatical.

(10)Screentouch: This bad grammatical expression gained currency in Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries with the influx of made-in-China stylus pen touchscreen not- so-smart phones in the mid 2000s. It was a novelty then; many in Nigeria had not seen it – or even thought such advanced technology was possible – before. So, they looked for a name to call it and “screentouch” came to mind, after all you just touch the screen and it starts working. In case you’ve still not figured it out yet, the correct thing to say is touchscreen and not “screentouch.

So there you have it, 10 English language “words” Nigerians love to use that are not found in the dictionary. Feel free to add yours;

Nigeria would have been better if there was no 1966 Coup or if the Coup was not bloody. Why did we kill ourselves? Power can change hands without blood. Buhari became Head of State without shedding blood. I'm not IBB fan but his Coup was bloodless and I commend him for not killing GMB and Idiagbon. I must confess, we were celebrating my sister's birthday in April 1990 when we heard of Orka's Coup, the jubilation became double, and people were trooping in with emergency gifts for her..... But shortly after we heard about the killing of IBB ADC and others and the guy started dividing the country on radio, people were sad. Why killing others to get power? 90% of bloody coups in Nigeria failed!!!

We can play politics of power without shedding blood, those who introduced blood to our politics will account for their wickedness on the day of judgment!
I learnt that IDIAGBON was given a house arrest and later killed by IBB via a poisoned microphone. How true is this info?

EducationRe: Six Parts Of Your Body You Probably Don't Know Their Names by highbee02: 9:07pm On Oct 24, 2019
Apeshy101:
Six parts of your body you probably don't know their names.

The human body consists of several parts. During our infancy and kindergarten days, most, if not all us were taught "parts of the body".

News9naija has compiled six "parts of the body that most of us were probably not taught at kindergarten.

1. Philtrum:
https://www.news9naija.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/70797544_1298430220338075_7725342539850448896_n.jpg
The philtrum is the midline groove in the upper lip that runs from the top of the lip to the nose. The way the philtrum appears is determined genetically. In some syndromes this grove is shortened.

2. Rasceta:
https://www.news9naija.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/71107639_1298430340338063_2367227124189757440_n.jpg

Rasceta is the wrinkling and creases on the inner surface of the wrist.

Apparently, the word rasceta (also rascette or rascetta) refers to the wrinkles running across the wrist at the base of the palm.

3. Glabella:
https://www.news9naija.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/71732879_1298430390338058_4547024323713433600_n.jpg

The glabella is the skin in the middle of the eyebrows and superior to the nose. It also stands for the underlying bone which is somewhat indented, and connects the two superciliary ridges. It is just superior towards the nasion and is a cephalometric marker (For study of the dental and skeletal relationships of a human skull). The pineal gland is located about 7 cm posterior towards the glabella.

Glabella creates a rounded protrusion in adult males and is generally flat in children as well as adult females.

The prominence of forehead, on either side, the frontal eminence is evident above the eyebrow.

The frontal prominence is typically more pronounced in children and adult females.

4. Lanula:
https://www.news9naija.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/70981417_1298430433671387_2305088387754754048_n.jpg

The lunula, also called little moon takes an area of about one fifth of the fingernail and has the clear edge. The lunula usually tells the disease of a person in the form of color change or disappearing crescent. After the person regains the health from regulation, the little moon will gradually appear again.

5. Columella:
https://www.news9naija.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/71386707_1298430657004698_5358576944256385024_n.jpg

The columella is the most anteroinferior portion of the nasal septum and forms the central fleshy portion between the two nostrils when looking at someone's nose. It is a single midline structure composed of cartilage and overlying skin, extending posteriorly from the tip of the nose. The lateral aspects form the medial wall of each nostril.

6. Purlicue:
https://www.news9naija.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/69672585_1298430757004688_2535860184614436864_n.jpg
This isn’t quite a body part, it’s more a gap in body parts. It’s the space between your thumb and extended forefinger – it’s the L that indicates your left hand
