Forlorn and depressed, Mrs. Grace Victor stared at the sky. The woman, who hails from Rivers State, has yet to come to term with the reality that the killing of her son, Mr. Victor Emmanuel, on Sunday by some trigger-happy policemen is not a scene from a tragic film.

She said witnessing how her son was ruthlessly murdered and her inability to protect him was a traumatic experience that would live with her for the rest of her life.

Grace was pained that despite trying to stop the policemen at one of the checkpoints along Sanni Abacha Expressway, Yenagoa, from slaying her son, they still went ahead to riddle Emmanuel’s body with bullets.

"I saw them shoot my son; no mercy at all, they shot him brutally. As he fell while they were shooting him, the tallest of them still continued shooting him on the ground," she said.

She told PUNCH METRO that her son was killed on Sunday on her way back from church. She said Emmanuel died with a copy of the Holy Bible on his hand.

"My son went to church with me. After the close of church, I came out and boarded a commercial motorcycle and, not far from where I took off, I heard gunshots. I was scared and told the motorcycle operator to stop for us to take cover.

"All of a sudden I saw my son running and being chased by the police. Police vans were parked on both sides of the road. And, when I discovered that it was my son they were chasing and about shooting, I ran towards one of the policemen close to one of the vans.

"I told him the person they were chasing was my son. I told him he was a Christian and that he just came out of the church. By this time they were cocking their guns. By the time the policeman I approached signalled his colleagues to stop, they were already shooting at my son.

"My son was holding a Bible when he was shot. I rushed, as a mother, to go and attend to him but they threatened that if I didn’t move back they would shoot me too. They made me move back. I did not see any of the policemen with any stain of blood then. But they just picked his Bible and drove off. It was another police vehicle that came and picked him."

What could have moved the police to commit such dastardly act? PUNCH METRO gathered from sources at the scene that the late Emmanuel was displeased at the way the police were allegedly harassing and extorting money from commercial motorcyclists. He was said to have made a demeaning statement that infuriated the policemen.

Particularly, Emmanuel had reportedly condemned the attitude of the policemen, saying they only exercised their power on helpless motorcyclists and wondered why they even chose Sunday to extort money from people.

Sources said it was the statement that made the angry policemen to chase and kill him. But the police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Egoavoen Emokpai, said the police had commenced investigations on the killing.

However, the Civil Liberties Organisation has condemned the brutal killing, saying there was no justification in extra-judicial murder. The state Secretary, CLO, Mr. Morris Alagoa, asked the Inspector-General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, to call policemen attached to the state command to order, adding that the killing of Emmanuel was one death too many.

He said, "No matter what happened, even though the police statement is saying the boy was smoking hemp and even tried to fight them when they challenged him, can a 25-year old young man overpower all those policemen that chased him? Was it proper to shoot at an unarmed Nigerian? Have the police the right to pass judgment and also sentence to death?

"The CLO is calling on the Commissioner of Police in the state to, as a matter of urgency, institute an investigation team to dig into this matter and take disciplinary action against the policemen who carried out this dastardly act of killing a Nigerian with impunity. Law- abiding Nigerians cannot continue to see themselves being killed by the very policemen meant to safe guard their security.

"We want these extra-judicial killings to stop and, perpetrators made to face the law of the land. In this wise, the CLO is calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to rise up, not only condemn the negative act, but to assist in fighting for justice. The IG should call his men in Bayelsa State to order and ensure that those found culpable are punished without delay."

There was a commotion at Kelebe, Osogbo, Osun state as two middle-aged men were caught with a human head . The men after they were caught and beaten to pulp by mob allegedly confessed to have severed the head from a freshly buried corpse at burial ground belonging to Al-Birr (Doing Good) Foundation.
Daily Sun gathered that people in the area have placed the suspects under watch as they have been frequenting the area in the recent times.

Those who spoke said when they were earlier accosted few months ago, the duo said they were bricklayer working in one of the plots in the area. “We have noticed that some people have been disturbing the graveyard recently.

We reported our findings to the police and intensified personal surveillance with local security and vigilante. We also went spiritual. All these yielded positive result and they were caught”, Mr. Jimoh Abdul Lateef, the secretary to the Foundation disclosed. Luck ran out on them when the local security demanded for the content of the black bag carried by one of them early in the morning.

Heated argument ensued as they initially refused to open the bag and when they discovered that they have been exposed, they attempted to escape but they were overpowered and beaten mercilessly. The two were said to have confessed that the head was the sixth severed from corpses in the graveyard. The suspects were later handed over to the police for further investigation.

The two men were detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Ring Road, Osogbo.
When contacted, the State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Solomon Olusegun confirmed the incident, saying that whoever was involved in the case would be prosecuted.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, yesterday, lost her bid to have the Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos dismiss the appeal by Labour Party, LP, challenging the judgment of the lower election tribunal which upheld her election for the Lagos Central Senatorial District.

LP had through its counsel prayed the court to set aside the ruling of the tribunal which sat at Igbosere, Lagos.

At the hearing in the appeal, yesterday, Tinubu’s counsel, Mr Olabode Olanipekun, prayed the court to strike out the motion by LP seeking for extension of time to file its brief and compile record of appeal.

Olanipekun argued that the appellant was already out of time, while no explanation had been given to justify granting an extension of time.

LP’s counsel, Chief Chukwuma, SAN, who prayed the court not to dismiss the application in the interest of justice, argued that it was not the position of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal to punish applicant based on the sin of counsel.

He said the public holidays and Sundays were not to be counted as part of the time within which the appellant must file its brief.

Justice Helen Ogunwumiju, in her ruling, said although the appellant was out of time in filing its brief, it was the duty of the court to do substantial justice to all election petitions.

The court observed that the 60 days allowed by the Electoral Act to hear appeal arising from the tribunal had not lapsed hence the appellant should not be denied the opportunity to regularise its brief.

A TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD man, Idowu Akinkuotu, has set his 65-year-old mother, Mrs. Grace Akinkuotu, ablaze. The tragedy occurred in Lotogbe, Ondo, Ondo State.

Idowu is not known to have a history of mental illness.

The Nigerian Compass gathered that his mother was sleeping in her room when he walked in, poured petrol on the mattress and set it ablaze.

Prior to the incident, there was no love lost between Idowu and his late mother.

Four months ago, it was alleged that the duo had a misunderstanding over a plot hatched by the suspect to poison his mother before she met her untimely death.

Because of the plot, the deceased, a retired primary school teacher, was said to have vacated the house for her son. Her husband, who is said to be suffering from an eye problem, also lives in the house.

However, family members intervened and the deceased returned to the house after she was reconciled with Idowu but the suspect struck three days after his mother's return.

When the fire started, the deceased was said to have shouted for help but before she was rescued, she had been badly burnt. Her husband, who could not see well, tried to quench the fire to no avail.

The deceased was later taken to the Ondo State Specialist Hospital in Ondo town from where she was referred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital ( OAUTH), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

She died before reaching Ile-Ife.

After setting her mother ablaze, Idowu ran to the house of a cleric where he was arrested by policemen.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Yaba Police Station, Ondo, Mr. Mike Okoh, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), confirmed the incident and the arrest of the suspect.

Idowu has been transferred to the homicide section at the Ondo State Police Command headquarters, Akure for further interrogation.“Meanwhile, a grandfather, Sani Hamidu, has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command with his son for conspiracy and killing of his grandchild, Sagiru Abdullahi.

The grandson's eyes, private part and throat were removed for the rituals before the corpse was thrown into a well.
State Police Commissioner, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba, confirmed the incident.

Represented by his Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Abdulmajid Ali, at a press briefing in Bauchi yesterday, the CP said the grandfather, who was paraded alongside 15 suspects, committed the act at Ashura Rahama Village, Toro Local Government Area of the North-East state, adding that after committing the heinous act, the corpse was dumped into a well from where it was recovered by the police.

The son, who escaped, has been declared wanted.

The police boss said the suspects would be charged with culpable homicide, punishable with death.

One Mohammed Sabo of Rigar Isamiya Darazo was also arrested for beating his wife to death with hoe on their way to the farm.

He said that policemen on routine patrol also arrested one Sabiu Sirajo who was in possession of 18 cutlasses and 14 daggers around Peoples Club, opposite Dass Park, Bauchi, adding that a combined team of police and the Neighbourhood Watch Group of Ganjuwa, acting on a tip off, arrested two suspects who confessed that they were specialists in attacking and robbing people of the belongings.

One Adigizey Abel John and two others were arrested for forging his father's signature on his cheque with a view to cashing N2.2 million from the Bauchi branch of Oceanic Bank.

Said the police boss: "Abel and the two others left Jos, the family's residence, to Bauchi for this purpose. To cover their act, they went to the MTN office, Bauchi, and swapped Abel father's SIM card number 08035633925.

"One of them, Hezekiah, was given the welcome back SIM bearing the same number to intercept bank transactions in respect of the cheque, while impersonating the father of the principal suspect."

Three suspects, who tried to snatch a Toyota Camry 2002 model with registration number BT 412 RSH valued at N3 million, were also paraded.

Also paraded was one Umar Idris who, with others now at large, burnt down a Mercedes Benz Marcopolo luxury bus belonging to Ekwos Transport Company, Lagos.

In Delta State, a 25-year-old worker of a construction firm, Setraco Nigeria Limited, identified as Saidu Suleiman, was yesterday strangled to death by a concrete mixing machine in the company’s premises in Bomadi.

It was gathered that the deceased, an operator of the machine, was killed about 2.30 p.m. as he was trying to fix the water supply device to the concrete mixer which he had discovered to be malfunctioning.

Sources said Suleiman, who until his death was a father of two, was inspecting the concrete mixer after putting it in order when his face was trapped by the machine and it squeezed him to death.

A company source, who craved anonymity, disclosed that the deceased had severally drawn the attention of the management to the ailing equipment as well as the difficulties he was facing in operating it.

Efforts to contact the management for comments were abortive as at the time of filing this report.

A police source confirmed the incident.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased had been taken to his home town in Okpila, Edo State for burial according to Muslim rites

For about 16 months that former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and one time chairman of Board of Directors of Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, Chief Olabode Ibiyinka George was in Kirikiri Prison serving his two-year jail sentence for fraud, his mother was made to believe he travelled overseas.



This startling revelation was made by George himself in an interview published in the Daily Sun newspaper today.

The former PDP stalwart said: “You know the big problem was how would I explain to my mother? My siblings shielded it from her. They never allowed her to know.

“She wouldn’t see newspapers. They removed television, radio from her. They told the people in the church not to commiserate with her. But the day before we left prison, I told my sister that mum must come to church.”

George, who is the only male child of his aged mother, instructed his sister to let the cat out of the bag at the church by informing her that “What happened to Herbert Macaulay when he was incarcerated in Calabar Prison happened to your son. He did not travelled as we have told you.”

The retired Navy Commodore likened his imprisonment to that of frontline nationalist and politician, Herbert Macaulay who was jailed for sedition and served his sentence in Calabar Prison.

He insisted that he did nothing wrong. George said inflation and splitting of contract for which he was convicted have remained the order of the day among serving public officials till today.

“What they accused us of, contravening the guidelines on contract is still what they are doing till this hour,” George said adding, “that’s why Oyewole sent us to prison and Ogunbiyi sanctioned it.”

Speaking on his relationship with former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, George repeated his earlier stand saying, “I leave Baba to his conscience and to the Almighty God.” He refused to make further comments.

Asked if he would vie for any position at the forthcoming national convention of the PDP in January, George parried the question by saying that he has resolved to remain a loyal and committed member of the PDP.

Erstwhile Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose was on Wednesday arraigned at the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti by the officials of the Economic and Financial and Crimes Commission, EFCC, for alleged diversion of Ekiti State fund to the tune of N1.3 billion while in office.

The case with number FHC/L/179c/2006, brought before Justice Emmanuel Obile of the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti was, however, adjourned till November 30 for the substantive case following an objection raised by counsel to the first accused in the case, Mr Kunle Kalejaye (SAN) on the issue of jurisdiction.

Appearing for the EFCC include Rotimi Jacob , Tayo Olukotun , Adebisi Adeniyi and others, while Kunle Kalejaye (SAN) led others including Owoseni Ajayi , Yakubu Dauda, Bimpe Olatemiju and Adetunji Muraino , and Ahmed Tafa represented the fourth accused. According to the presiding judge, Justice Emmanuel Obile, the adjournment became necessary based on argument of jurisdiction raised by the counsel to the accused persons.

He added that the court was to also allow the application filed by the counsel to the second and third accused persons, on the point that necessary case files have been served on him. The judge overruled the objection raised by prosecuting counsel against issue of jurisdiction. The prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacob had called for the substantive case to be heard yesterday and today, which involved the first accused person.

Going by his words, he had come for the substantive case to be heard, which was why he had brought two of his witnesses from Lagos and that they were around in the court. But, almost immediately, counsel to the second and third accused persons, Abayomi Sadiku had moved that based on his application, court should quash the case against his clients, since they have not been served with details of the case files slated for yesterday.

Also, counsel to the 4th accused person, Ahmed Tafa had equally raised objection for the hearing to continue on the case, saying that his client was not served with all necessary files relating to the case. The prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacob argued that the new application over the amended charge, which prevented the hearing to continue, was just served on him yesterday. He argued that his office and that of defense counsel were close by in Lagos , saying that the fresh motion could not be for today, because there was no date, and therefore not ripe for hearing.
“I have mobilized my witnesses from Lagos to come and give evidence on the case, noting that the case has been on for over three years, and therefore should not call for any objection.

He said further that according to EFCC Act, Section 19/40 says that the Commission’s case must be given accelerated hearing. Jacob, who wanted the case to be heard expeditiously, prayed the court that the substantive case be heard. Also, Kunle Kalejaye (SAN) pointed out that the matter was between the state and the accused, and that the case was a joint one, which could not be separated, or in piecemeal.

He said where the issue of jurisdiction is raised, it must be first determined.
