I respect this man for such brave statements. He actually listed 500 people and instead of some miscreants here asking for their names, they are busy antagonizng Nzeribe. Chieftains of the Osun State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), who were on their way to Abuja for a meeting, were on Tuesday arrested and detained till Wednesday afternoon by officers of the Kogi State police command.

Speaking to journalists in Lokoja on Thursday, the Osun State vice chairman of ACN, Ishola Oyewumi said their ordeal started at about 6:41pm on Tuesday when the Osun State government bus, in which they were travelling, was accosted by policemen at Jamata village, near River Niger bridge.

He said the policemen, who were almost 10 in number, immediately ordered all the occupants to disembark for identification and thorough checking.

According to him, all of us promptly complied but nothing incriminating was found in the bus.

He said that they were surprised when the police insisted that they could not proceed on their trip and ordered them to go back to Osun State.

The party chieftain said that before they could offer further explanation, the police ordered everybody back into the bus and directed the driver toward where they were coming from.

He said that the policemen escorted the bus to a point at Kabba junction before turning back.

Mr Oyewumi said that they decided to turn back and continue with the journey only for them to run into the same police team at Jamata village.

He stated that the policemen got infuriated by this action and immediately arrested and detained all of them on the spot, saying that all pleas made to make the policemen have a change of mind fell on deaf ears.

Among those detained were the state auditor of the party, Funke Ogundele, welfare officer, John Olayemi and the state ACN youth leader, Rasheed Adeniji. Other chieftains are assistant secretary, Omolaoye Akintola, assistant PRO, Samson Oyebode, assistant financial secretary, Bakare Idera and other members numbering more that 30.

Oyeumi said he and his colleagues were made to sleep in the open without food and water until about 2pm on Wednesday, when they were released to the Kogi State chairman of the party, Haddy Ametuo.

He wondered what their offence could be to be so maltreated by an agency of the federal government, stating that this was the second time such treatment would be meted out to them by men of Kogi State police command.

Mr Ametuo, in his reaction, demanded an unreserved apology from the police, pointing out that the party would file a suit to challenge the illegal arrest and detention of its members if the police failed to apologise to the party men.

When contacted, the Kogi State police public relations officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, said that he was not aware of the incident.

The peace and tranquility,hitherto witnessed in Musa street, located in the densely populated area of Mushin, Lagos was recently truncated following screams from one o f the apartments. At first, no one was sure of what was the matter until a woman with a wrapper strapped to her chest rushed out of her room panting.

A curious neighbor who came out to ascertain what the matter was, was shocked, on discovering blood all over the woman identified as Mrs Segun. The neighbor, unsure of what action to take, raised an alarm which alerted others. Time was 2am.

One of the neighbors reportedly rushed inside the injured woman’s room only to see Mrs Segun’s mother-in-law groaning in excruciating pains, in a pool of her blood.

The perplexed sympathizers were asking who the assailant was. The answer shook the area to its very foundation when Mrs Segun revealed that her husband was responsible. While the mother in-law was being rushed to the hospital, she was inaudibly muttering the name of her son as being responsible for her wound. Unfortunately for her, she could not live to share her ordeal, as she died moments before reaching the hospital.

Crime Alert gathered that when Mrs Segun who was also rushed to the hospital regained consciousness, she revealed to her family members that her husband had first stabbed his mother, who let out a shout from the sleep that woke her up. But before she could raise alarm, she said her husband, Bakare, thrust the the knife into her chest.

Policemen attached to Olosan division were reportedly contacted. To the surprise of all, Bakare, was reportedly found in the same sitting position next day when the police arrived and whisked him away.

A police source said he would be taken to a psychiatric home to ascertain his mental stability. Before the dastardly act on October 7, 2010, he was reportedly involved in an accident which incapacitated him. Since then, he had been walking with crushes.

When Crime Alert arrived the private hospital where Mrs Segun was admitted, the nurses would not grant this reporter an interview with her as they claimed she was too feeble to speak. On reaching the scene of the incident, a neighbor who spoke on condition of anonymity said Segun may have gone mad.

Explaining how he rushed out of his apartment, the neighbor said, “I was at home sleeping that fateful night, when all of a sudden, a shout for help woke me up. I rushed out on recognizing that it was Mama Idowu, Segun’s wife and found out she was bleeding from the chest.

She asked us to rush to her room to save her mother-in-law but when we got there, we discovered that the old woman had matchet cuts all over her body. She died before she could be taken to the hospital.

“There are about eight rooms in this building. Segun lived in one with his wife, mother and children. They just moved in here about three months ago and nobody knows much about them. Segun himself was just recovering from a severe injury he sustained on okada. He could barely even walk. Nobody can tell what caused the quarrel because we did not hear any scuffle that night.”

Meanwhile, relatives were said to have taken custody of their children

ON Sunday October 23, residents of Ajegunle along Ikorodu Road woke up to be confronted by a serious flood arising from the overflow of the Odo-Ogun river. The surge especially affected the major tarred road leading to Ikorodu and its environs.

Not surprisingly, the situation later caused a serious gridlock on both sides of the road, forcing many residents to arrive their destinations late. This was in spite of spirited efforts by some officials of the Lagos State Traffic and Management Authority, LASTMA, which yielded little or no result.

Just as it was the previous day when post-election protests forced commercial bus drivers to withdraw their vehicles from the road, most commuters had no choice but to embark on an endurance trek, especially when operators of the few available buses hiked their fares between 100 and 150 per cent.

By Monday, Vanguard Metro, VM, witnessed an almost free flow of traffic between the hours of 9am and 10am. Compared with the alarm raised over the airwaves on Sunday, the gridlock this day stretched to a distance of between 100 and 400 metres which started before a filling station at Ajegunle Bus-stop area of the road and ended after the connecting road nearest to Irawo Bus-stop.

However, residents of Itowolo, Ajegunle, Irawo, Owode-Elede and its environs were the worse hit by the flood ‘invasion’ and had to resort to the use of canoes to access their streets. Many also hastily constructed wooden bridges to link their houses to the water logged roads.

This, however, was in contravention of the earlier and consistent warning issued by the State Government directing them to quit the vicinity based on experts forecast of the impending danger.

Most of the residents who spoke with VM, however, said they could not obey the order because they had no places for them to relocate to.

VM saw many abandoned vehicles submerged in the flood. But surprisingly business was in high gear as traders were seen busy in their makeshift stalls even in the flooded areas. Hawkers were also busy wading through the flooded road to attend to their customers.

Also not left out were some furniture dealers who displayed their wares seemingly oblivious of the surrounding water. Some of them told VM that they are not bothered because they were used to the situation which was first experienced about 16 years ago and has been re-occuiring since then, becoming worse last year.

At Irawo, some women with babies strapped to their backs were seen struggling to find their way inside the flooded areas on their way home even with the flood water reaching their waists.

Speaking with this reporter, some commuters wondered why law makers from the state have not been using part of their constituency allowances to alleviate the sufferings of the masses, just as they frowned at government’s expressed intention to remove subsidy on petroleum products.

It will be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan visited the area the last time serious flooding occurred there and promised government’s intervention to bring succour to the inhabitants. But that is yet to happen. It was only recently that the Lagos State government relocated some victims to Agbowa camp.

“I have lived in Ajegunle for about 20 years but the last flood here forced me to relocate to Odogunyan area. Unfortunately government has not done anything to save the situation,” said a public servant, Mrs Olaitan Falodun.

Some commuters said they had no choice but to brave the flooded road to get to their destinations. “What else can we do, we have no alternative,” chorused Mr. Nathaniel Abiodun, Mrs Juliana Gabriel and Messirs Anthony Ogochukwu.

Senate yesterday estimated that Nigeria’s present external and local debts at N6.02 trillion, but said the country is not in any danger of going broke. Chairman, Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, disclosed this during the committee’s inauguration by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.

Giving a breakdown of the debt profile, Uzamere said the external debt stands at $5.398 billion which translates to 2.76 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) while the local debt is N5.210 trillion, representing 17.53 per cent of the GDP. Regardless, Senator Uzamere said compared with other countries; Nigeria is still on safe ground with its present debt profile.

He noted: “The situation does not call for a party but more hard work and a serious approach to translate our debt into asset to accelerate our infrastructural development and boost the economy”. The committee chairman said the total debt of N6.02 trillion “is more than the Federal Government’s annual budget. This amount is unsettling and calls for serious concern.”

He asked rhetorically; “do we have the capacity to repay this money considering our yearly revenue profile?”
Also speaking at the inauguration of the Women Affairs Committee, Senator Helen Esuene, its Chairman, outlined the panel’s agenda to include protection of women’s rights as well as focus on increasing female participation in key public sector positions, increasing female participation in commanding and managerial positions in the private sector.

“It is a known fact that shame and stigmatization have often been the cause of perpetrators of rape and other domestic violence going scot free. The committee will look into how to bridge this gap by strengthening prosecution procedures and creating units for trauma management of such victims.

“We will focus on security and welfare of members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), protection of children born and living in prisons and effective implementation of the Child Rights laws. The committee will give serious attention to issues of widowhood, human trafficking and inheritance. “It is pertinent to state that this committee is not out to witch-hunt but to add value to the activities of various establishments,” she said.

Inaugurating the Senate Committee on National Identity Card and Population, the Deputy Senate President stressed the importance of data gathering and advised Nigerians to place emphasis on registration of births and deaths.
At the inauguration of the Works Committee headed by Senator Ayogu Eze, Senator Ekweremadu cautioned that if the present set of ministers of works fail to fix the deplorable road networks in the country “then, we have failed and we may not get it right anymore.”

He urged the committee to liaise with the various organs of government to begin rehabilitation of roads, adding that Nigerians have waited for too long for dividends of democracy. Responding, Senator Ayogu assured that if after four years the committee, in conjunction with the ministry, fails to fix the roads, “our hopes of industrialisation would be a mirage, adding, “we cannot attract foreign investment when our roads are in deplorable conditions.”
