CrimeKidnapper's Den Located Near Police Headquarters In Ondo by HighChief4(op): 5:05pm On Nov 03, 2011
Kidnappers’ Den Located Near Police Hqtrs

The police in Ondo State has said it had uncovered a kidnappers’ den, located a few metres from the state Police Command headquarters, within Alagbaka Extension area of Akure.

The police yesterday took journalists to the house, a three bedroom bungalow, said to have been rented by a gang of kidnappers.

The house was said to have been used by some kidnap suspects, two of whom allegedly confessed that they had used the place for various operations, including the kidnap of a lecturer of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

The police said they got to know about the den with the help of a victim.
The leader of the suspected kidnapping syndicate, Ogehekwweh Igagah, told newsmen that he was a member of a gang that had been terrorising Delta, Rivers and Ondo States, and that they had effectively used the house rented at N150, 000 per annum for their operations.

The visit to the den was preceded by a briefing by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Sannin Magaji, who paraded nine persons, including a 65-year-old-man, Mr. Isaac Suleiman; and his son, Seun, over armed robbery activities in Akungba-Akoko.

Magaji said nine exotic cars were recovered from the kidnappers, while about 11 others, ammunition and charms, were recovered from the suspects at their hide-out in Port-Harcourt.

He said they also robbed their victims at gun point and later sold the cars to a Port Harcourt-based dealer.

The vehicles recovered from the suspects included; One Toyota Avensis that beloned to the Ekiti State government, one black Infinity Jeep, one Toyota Sienna, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry-2003 model, two Toyota Camry-2000 model, Toyota Corolla and one Honda Pilot Jeep.

He explained that the police also recovered a sum of N3.3m from the gang that carried a bank robbery operation at Owo Town last month in which two of the robbery suspects and a policeman died.

Suleiman, who claimed to be a night guard, denied being a robber, but admitted that his son took away his gun and gave it to his friend, Mr. Kayode Ariyo, who is believed to be a notorious armed robber.

However, Magaji said the suspects had on them, locally made pistols, AK 49 rifle, one mask and one HP laptop.

He also said one Mercedes Benz 190, one Honda car with registration number Rivers ET 726 PHC, five AK 49 riffles with 11 rounds of live ammunition were also recovered from the robbers.

Crime75-year-old Woman Disappears From Verification Centre. by HighChief4(op): 5:03pm On Nov 03, 2011
Where could mama be? Who could have done this to a helpless old woman? These are questions currently begging for an urgent reply, following the sudden disappearance of a 75-year-old woman, Mrs Juliana Oyewande Oyeyinka at the Federal Secretariat, Ikoloba, Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

The septuagenarian, a retired headmistress, left her home at Balogun Amosu off Alakia Isebgbon road in Ibadan, on October 9, 2011, for pensioners verification exercise, without the slightest inkling of the danger ahead. She was escorted to the secretariat by one of her daughters, Mrs Oyewo, owing to her inability to walk properly as she reportedly suffers from arthritis.

Arriving the secretariat at 11am and waiting for her turn, as there were other pensioners on the queue, mama, as she is fondly called, reportedly waited for four hours before she was asked to fill a form, which, unfortunately, was not within her reach.

Her daughter, as gathered, opted to go get the form. But on her arrival, she discovered with dismay that her mother’s sitting position was empty, without any sight of her around. Out of curiosity, she asked those around if they knew where she was but everyone shuddered with indifference.

Just then, it occurred to Mrs Oyewo that an unknown woman had volunteered to look after mama as she was about going to get the requested document.

The distraught daughter of the septuagenarian told Crime Alert that, “ the lady in question assured me she was going to look after my mother when I was leaving” Perhaps, mama had premonition of what was to happen as she had intended following her daughter but the strange woman reportedly assuaged her fears by opting to look after her in her daughter’s absence.

Continuing, Mrs Oyewo said, “I was reluctant to leave my mother in her care but she offered to look after her. I never knew her from anywhere. But I noticed she was somehow close to my mother all through. Honestly, I wanted to go with my mother to get the form. If only I knew the woman was into something sinister.

When I came back and did not see my mother, I looked round for the strange woman but did not see her either. I thought probably my mum went to ease herself and could have taken her. I went round the premises in search of my mother and the strange woman but did not see either of them.

I also went to the gate- man to ask if he saw my mother leaving and he said no “I immediately went to the police to report. Consequently, some policemen came with me and together we searched round for my mum but yet did not see her.

I was then asked to go home and wait for twenty-four hours before making an official complain. That I did, hoping my mum would come home but have not seen her since then.”

It has been twenty-five days since the dark completioned septuagenarian who retired from active service in 1991disappeared with the mystery woman without any trace.

On whether the septuagenarian was kidnapped still remains a puzzle to be unraveled. Crime Alert gathered that the slim and average in height aged woman who was visiting the secretariat for the third time since retirement, was not with her phone, as this might have perhaps helped her purported abductors to reach her devastated children.

The family has therefore urged the Oyo state government in particular and Nigerians in general to help them with possible information that could lead to the discovery of their mother. The family who expressed concern over Mrs Juliana’s health passionately begged anyone that has information about their mother’s whereabouts to reach them or contact the nearest police station.

PoliticsDokpesi Loses Bid To Stop Bank’s Bankruptcy Suit by HighChief4(op): 5:00pm On Nov 03, 2011
Chairman of Daar Communications Limited, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, Wednesday lost his bid to stay further proceedings in the bankruptcy case brought against him by Fidelity Bank Plc as a Federal High Court in Lagos dismissed his application to that effect.

In his ruling, the trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, held that the ground on which the application was founded was baseless.
Dokpesi, had in his application, prayed the court to stay proceedings pending the hearing of an appeal he filed against a ruling by the court on October 5 this year.

The court had on October 5 decided to hear simultaneously, the objection by Dokpesi and the substantive suit on the ground that they would be decided solely on documentary evidence.

Justice Idris, who upheld the counter argument by Fidelity Bank’s lawyer, Mr. Joseph Nwobike (SAN), against the application, held that there was no pending appeal as claimed by Dokpesi.

Dokpesi’s lawyer, Mr. Mike Ozekhome (SAN), had, while moving the application, told the court that he filed a notice of appeal before the appellate court and accompanied same with a motion for leave to appeal out of time.

He contented that his notice of appeal, filed along with the motion for extension of time to appeal, could pass as a valid appeal. He said the stay of proceedings at the lower court would serve the interest of justice as the success of the appeal could end the case.

Justice Idris, in the ruling, agreed with Nwobike that what Ozekhome filed for his client was a motion for extension of time to apply for leave to appeal out of time, an application, which did not amount to a valid appeal.

The court held that an appeal could only be valid when filed at the registry of the Court of Appeal and a receipt obtained by the appellant to that effect, a situation, it said was absent in Dokpesi’s case.

“The filing of a motion for leave to appeal out of time cannot be said to be a valid appeal. It cannot be a basis or ground for stay of proceedings. There is no authority that supports the ground on which the application is grounded. It therefore fails and is accordingly dismissed,” the court held.

Justice Idris awarded a N5,000 cost against Dokpesi, in favour of the bank and fixed December 1 for the hearing of the notice of preliminary objection by the businessman and the substantive suit.

The bank is, by the bankruptcy suit, praying the court to among others, declare the businessman bankrupt over his alleged inability to repay some facilities, estimated at about N7.5 billion it offered Daar Communications in 2009 to part-finance its daily operations.

The loans also said to have been deployed to Daar Communication’s broadcast of the FIFA under-17 World Cup hosted by the country, were said to have been guaranteed by Dokpesi.

PoliticsRevealed: Why Pdp Has Not Cleared Sylva, Alaibe, Bruce by HighChief4(op): 4:58pm On Nov 03, 2011
Fresh facts have emerged on why the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has not cleared Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva; former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Timi Alaibe; and former Director General of Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Mr. Ben Murray Bruce.

THISDAY gathered last night that their clearances were being withheld because of on-going investigation into some “serious issues” against them.

The PDP, it was gathered, is investigating an alleged threat to the life of President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, levelled against Sylva if he was not given clearance to run for the governorship.

The allegation, which is being treated as a matter of grave concern, is being handled by crack detectives that are currently looking at documented evidence linking the governor to the allegation.

A member of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), the Niger Delta Integrity, Mr. John Idumange, had complained in a petition against Sylva that the governor had threatened to kill the president and his wife, if not given the PDP ticket and therefore, “accused the governor of treasonable felony”.

It was learnt that the party was dragging its feet in the case of Alaibe, because “we need time to look into his application for a waiver to enable him run for the office of governor in next year’s election”.

“Waiver is a discretionary matter. We need to debate it in detail; and that is what the party is doing currently. So it will take a while,” the source said.

The case against Bruce, the source further said, is that of his dual citizenship.
“We have referred his matter to the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) for advice. The man is alleged to be in possession of passports of two different countries,” the source added.
