Now, get it, I was trying to let Jason know that why they're against his(Aganga) appointment is because he is from Edo which most states will also kick against, but Jason was saying that they allowed him cos of Lagos and Edo affiliations and I was trying to let him know it was not because of that or do you want to tell me that those supporting him are doing so cos he is Edo and not SE NE or SS? No. Honestly, I dont even know why am trying to explain to you. Abeg move over

^^^You are wrong, because they actually worked against it. The same way they would have been against SE, NE, SS is the same way they are doing to Aganga now, if not these groups wouldn't have come out protesting. If they respected the ancestral affiliations his appointment would have been unanimously accepted. The people against it based their action on the fact that he is Edo, so what are we saying?

@Jason, was it not the same people from SW that are campaignin against his appointment, so you cannot say they are allowing him because of their ancestral affiliation with the Edo people. Some Lagos people refused such appointment and was saying he is not part of them and that was before the emergence of this group upholding his appointment. So it has nothing to do with being Edo or not.

Crime › Lorry Crushes Mother Of Two To Death In Ibadan . by HighChief4(op): 7:10pm On Jul 01, 2011
IN a bid to avert heavy casualties, arising from a brake failure, the driver of a truck yesterday rammed his vehicle into another stationary lorry, but unfortunately crushed a middle-aged mother of two to death in the process.

The incident happened around the popular Dugbe Market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in the evening.

Another woman equally sustained fracture on her legs, when the lorry conveying the products of a popular soft drinks firm, with registration number OYO AA 865 SHK, swerved towards a lorry belonging to another popular bottling company, with registration number LAGOS 252 LSD, and rammed into it.

While expressing thanks for the reduction of casualties, some of the traders and passersby said the accident would have been more fatal, if the affected truck had rammed into the market.

The driver, who was soaked in his own blood, was later rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH) after some sympathisers and a team of some policemen rescued him from the wrecked truck.

The accident caused serious traffic snarl on the road leading to the Dugbe Alawo market.

Narrating his ordeal while trying to control the truck , the driver, who identified himself as Kanayo, said: “I was shocked, when I found out that the break of the truck was not working on a sloppy bend. Within me, I felt that there would be a lot of casualties being a market place, so that is why I made up my mind to hit the parked truck.”

As at the time of filing this report, some police officers from the Iyaganku Police Station were still controlling the traffic, awaiting a towing vehicle to clear the way for road users.

Politics › Aregbesola Faults Attacks Over Absence Of Cabinet by HighChief4(op): 7:08pm On Jul 01, 2011
GOVERNOR Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State has lashed out at critics over his non-constitution of a cabinet seven months after he assumed office.

He said the opposition lacks the credibility to fault his government after they allegedly failed to serve the people well for over seven years.

Aregbesola, who responded personally for the first time on the controversial issue, said what the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) achieved during its governor’s tenure could not be matched with the successes recorded by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in seven months.

The PDP had consistently criticised Aregbesola for his failure to put a cabinet in place seven months after he came to power and offered to select commissioner-nominees capable of making the list from the ACN fold.

He said the comments by the opposition on his administration was a misplaced agenda, pointing out that “it is ironical that the same people who allegedly misled people in the state could turn round to condemn a performing administration.

When I read their litany on the pages of newspapers about the non-composition of my cabinet, I ask myself that this characters, shouting about the non-formation of cabinet, what have they done with their own cabinet when they were there other than useless jokes.

“What they ever discussed at that cabinet were issues on chieftaincy titles to victimise one king or the other. Nothing reasonable was discussed at their cabinet beside mischief. Instead of them to be ashamed of their misdeed and the trauma they subjected the people to, they are still condemning the government that is performing.”

Politics › Sell Groundnuts In Kuta(osun State) And Die! by HighChief4(op): 7:04pm On Jul 01, 2011
In Kuta, a sleepy town in Osun State, anyone who ventures to hawk groundnuts will die in the process while those who pound yam have signed a pact with poverty. Tunde Ogunesan who visited the town presents a genesis of the development

WHAT the head of the family does not take, the wife dares not prepare it, says a Yoruba adage. But if a wife tries to prepare delicacies that her husband does not take, then she must be ready to withstand the reaction of the head of the house. This adage could best describe the situation in Kuta, a small town in Ayedire Local Government, Osun State, where it is forbidden to hawk groundnuts and pounded yam.

When Tribune Features learnt that someone cried to death for hawking groundnuts in Kuta, the curiosity to know why such happened led to the journey to the town. Though the head of Kuta kingdom, Olowu of Kuta, Oba Shittu Bamgbade, was not available to comment on the matter, Tribune Features met a man whose voice on such issue could not be discarded. Raimi Ojeyemi, known as ‘Baba Sango’ is the head of the hunters in Kuta and he said growing or selling groundnuts is a taboo in the land as well as selling pounded yam.

As they say, where there is no law, there is no sin. Why did such things become an abomination in the land? He said the town has a deity called Anlugbua which they worshipped before the modern day religions – Christianity and Islam came, this deity , according to Baba Sango, was worshipped with groundnuts and pounded yam, so it is forbidden for anyone to make mockery of the sanctity of Anlugbua’s items, hence selling these food items became an abomination to the residents.

Baba Sango said, “the name Kuta came from a saying “Iku ta mi ti omo odo agba. The town Kuta was established by Anlugbua, a hunter, who today the entire community of Kuta is worshipping. He left the town during a time of war that ravaged the land, for the place known as Anlugbua forest till today. Since then, we’ve been worshipping him as the founder and leader of the town and as we all know because his trait (being swallowed by the ground) was an uncommon one, it showed a powerful person whom Eledumare (God) empowered. Some of the things we give him annually during the festival are, pounded yam, kolanut, cows, white or black rams, anything he requests for.

“Till date, the town still continues to worship him as a deity. No king in the land will ascend the throne and stop worshipping him. It is our symbol of unity, uniqueness and source of existence. Also, we have Ose tree that we worship, it was then located at the Mosun market, you must have seen a big round about when you were coming into the town that was its initial location. But when modern religion came, they fell it.”

How did selling groundnuts and pounded yam become a taboo? And have the people been able to sustain the taboo now that modernisation or modern religions are in vogue? Baba Sango said a true native of Kuta would not try contravening the taboo because they all grew up to know it, though he said there had been trials and they are all witnesses to the consequences.

Baba Sango said there was a notable incident of a move by a section of some modern religious practitioners in the town to show that the taboo could have no effect on them. According to him, “they asked a child to hawk groundnuts but the child that hawked the groundnuts cried to death, ask anybody in town. In those days, when they said something was a taboo it would be regarded as such, but what do we have today? Because of foreign religions we throw away our culture and make ourselves sacrifices to the deity. Tell me, the child that died, was he not used by his sponsors as sacrifice to the deity we’re using rams and cow to worship?

“For groundnuts, anybody that tries to sell groundnuts will have to pay for it with his life but whoever that pounds yam for sale will die a poor person. Cultivating groundnuts in the land is forbidden, selling it is also forbidden, though we eat it. Nobody from the land will dare cultivate or sell it. Those who tried it in the past now live with the consequences. That is our culture and as a traditional leader and head of the hunters, I am entitled to worship the deity as I’m doing it now, I also have an Ogun shrine in front of my house that I worship as the head of the hunters in the town.”

Saliu Famuyiwa, another elder in Kuta, corroborated Baba Sango’s claim that both groundnuts and pounded yam are forbidden for sale in the town. He said the norm is still in vogue.

Famuyiwa said for as long as the town exists, the taboo will subsist. He also admitted that those who had the courage to break the taboo faced the consequences.

“A taboo is a taboo. In Kuta, we don’t sell groundnuts and pounded yam, anybody that tries it will die. Those of the modern religions who once claimed that they had broken it now live with the consequences. They cannot say such things do not exist, the taboo has been since the time of our forefathers who told us of its sanctity because of Anlugbua deity, and as long as we worship it, the taboo will continue to exist.

“Although several attempts have been made to silence it, those against it have never and will never succeed. It is not what somebody just woke up one day and cooked up. It is a long standing tradition,” Famuyiwa noted.
Politics › Why I ‘mortgaged’ Ogun Property – Ogd by HighChief4(op): 7:02pm On Jul 01, 2011
Immediate past governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel yesterday reacted to the allegation that he mortgaged the state, explaining that what he did was in the interest of her people.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun had last Tuesday while addressing traditional rulers in the state alleged that his predecessor in office mortgaged the state through concession and illegal sales of lands and other property belonging to the state.
A press statement released yesterday by the former information commissioner in the state, Mr. Sina Kawonise, Daniel, said, “we affirm that the concession of all the non-performing government companies and ventures were done in the best interest of the state and in line with best practices under the Private Public Partnership (PPP) arrangement.’’

According to him, “the concession ventures were not bringing in any money to the state and were essentially drain pipes. We chose the concession arrangement rather than outright sale as many states have done to preserve our common patrimony and ensure a win-win situation for the state.”

On the three Gateway Hotels across the state, which were concessioned for 25 years each, Daniel said the hotels could not meet the objectives for which they were set up and there was a need to reconsider government funding.
“To achieve this, the OGD administration opted to involve private investors in the management and or ownership of the hotels. Both due diligence and due process were followed all through the transactions.”

The former governor stated that the move was intended to, among other objectives, ensure efficient management of the ventures and generation of higher returns and employment for the teeming populace of the state and ultimately partner with the private sector to drive sustainable development in the economic sector.’’
Daniel added that other concessions that were carried out followed the same pattern.

“We affirm that the concession option is what is prevailing everywhere as it has been found out with verifiable evidence that commercial ventures handled by government rarely thrive.” He said that was what informed the divestment of the Federal Government from its ownership of NICON NOGA Hotel, the MM2 local airport concession for 36 years, among others. According to the statement, “Even in Lagos State where Governor Amosun’s godfathers hold sway, the Lekki Expressway was concessioned at most ridiculous terms for 30 years!

“It was in the light of the soundness of the concession imperative that the Federal Government, by an Act of the National Assembly, set up the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC). Oh, who will rouse the new power people in Ogun State from the slumber of their economic illiteracy?”

While urging Amosun to face squarely the business of governance, Daniel said, “instead of charting the way forward, he laboured endlessly to blame the last administration for everything under the sun and deliberately twisted facts to prepare the people for his soon-to-be unfolded hidden agenda.’’

Politics › Why Opposition Didn't Make List----jonathan by HighChief4(op): 6:58pm On Jul 01, 2011
Appointment of opposition parties members as ministers appears no longer a feasible feature of the Government of National Unity(GNU) proposed by President Goodluck Jonathan after winning the last presidential election.

A source close to Aso Rock exclusively revealed to Daily Sun that President Jonathan was willing to include the members of the opposition parties, especially, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Labour Party (LP) in his cabinet but was overruled by the members of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This is evident in the list of ministerial hopefuls submitted to the Senate on Tuesday.
The source said President Jonathan had called Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State and Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State to tell them that his party members were strongly against the Government of National Unity and that there was nothing he could do about it.

“President Jonathan called governors Peter Obi and Olusegun Mimiko and told them that what he could do for them was to give them one Special Adviser slot each as well as two ambassadorial positions each,”the source said.
Daily Sun gathered that the Anambra State, Governor, Peter Obi had submitted the names of Prof Dora Akunyili and Senator Joy Emordi for ministerial appointment.

As the opposition parties nominees can no longer be made minister, Senator Joy Emordi is likely to pick the Special Adviser slot on behalf of APGA. But whether Prof Dora Akunyili would accept the ambassadorial position is still unclear.

Many political parties have adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as their candidate in the last presidential election and as a way of showing appreciation, he had promised to run a government of national unity with the members of the opposition parties, especially APGA and LP but the members of his party had rejected the idea, telling him that it was going to be a government of the winner takes it all.

Politics › Robbers Kill 2 Corps Members, 3 Others In Ogun by HighChief4(op): 10:06pm On Jun 30, 2011
ROBBERS, on Wednesday, struck at a branch of a first generation bank in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, killing two members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their operation.

Also, they attacked a petrol station in Papalanto area of the state and allegedly killed three persons.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the bandits, numbering 18, arrived the bank at about 4.00 p.m in an unmarked Toyota Hummer bus and blew off the bank’s security door with dynamite.

The robbers were said to have shot sporadically into the air, leaving several people to scamper for safety, while some others were injured in the process.

The bandits allegedly held members of staff and customers hostage for several minutes and later carted away millions of naira from the bank.

The identities of the victims could not be ascertained on Wednesday, but the Nigerian Tribune learnt that one of the deceased corps members was working at the bank, while the other came on a visit.

Those injured during the robbery were said to have been taken to a General Hospital, Itori, for medical attention.

Efforts to confirm the incident from the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, were unsuccessful, as his mobile line was not reachable.

Meanwhile, The Kwara State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Federal Government to review the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

The state chairman of CAN, Reverend James Folaranmi, who made the call in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune in Ilorin, on Wednesday, said the review should be tailored towards ensuring safety of the corps members wherever they were posted.

He regretted the kidnapping and killing of corps members, describing the development as sad and unfortunate.

The cleric, who also condemned the spate of bomb blasts in some parts of the country, charged the security agencies to bring to book the perpetrators.

He decried the activities of Boko Haram and kidnapping of innocent Nigerians by some miscreants in the Niger Delta area, tracing the root of kidnapping, assassination and bomb blasts that have pervaded the country to activities of “enemies of progress who do not believe in the corporate existence of Nigeria but hiding under politics and religion to make life difficult for the citizenry.”

Folaranmi lamented that after Nigeria’s 50 years of independence, “Nigerians still live in fears because of a few people who are hell-bent on imposing their ideology on the majority of Nigeria, citizens.”

While urging Nigerians to have faith in the ability of President Goodluck Jonathan to transform the country and bring to an end the various violent crimes being perpetrated in some parts of the country, the cleric said what the president needed most to surmount the problem was cooperation of the citizens.
