Alan smith's view on Arsenal after the Cardiff match: Arsenal back in fray as swagger returns At last, a bit of good news in a season that was flagging. At last, some reasons to cheer for those Arsenal fans who had found the past few months unusually tedious. By Alan Smith Last Updated: 7:26AM GMT 18 Feb 2009 Arsene Wenger's sides, after all, had never dropped out of the title race so early, clearly ill-equipped to last the course and beset by divisions within the camp. Arsenal might not have won the League since 2004 but at least they remained contenders in seasons past. This time, their fate looked a foregone conclusion as far back as August when Wenger didn't replace the dogged midfield work of Mathieu Flamini, the calm experience of Gilberto or the commanding presence of goalkeeper Jens Lehmann. So as the season progressed, it seemed like the party was happening somewhere else, with a distinct lack of excitement or expectation in the Emirates. Wenger, in turn, has looked incredibly flat when asked to comment on a succession of underwhelming displays. You could see it in his face. He knew the score. This Arsenal side just wasn't good enough. The Frenchman, however, might be feeling a little more optimistic today as he surveys the business end of the season. Several factors are coming together to inject hope into his plans. Forget about the title. That's way out of reach. Wenger admitted as much yesterday, virtually conceding the honours to Manchester United. Yet the cup competitions still offer promise. Through to the fifth round of the FA Cup and with the Champions League knockout phase beginning next week, Arsenal are threatening to sort themselves out. The return of Eduardo is the obvious place to start. Back into the fray in style against Cardiff on Monday, this cunning little predator proved he can return to the goalscoring heights that made him such an inspiring force for Slaven Bilic's Croatia. After such a nasty broken leg, you just never know if full recovery is possible. Quite often, the psychological side gets in the way. The body might be willing but the mind disagrees, with a lack of trust in the tackle holding you back. Fortunately, Eduardo seems to have conquered that hurdle, making him a valuable asset for the run-in. The same might apply to Cesc Fabregas, with the young Spaniard only 10 days away from training with the ball. Add another two weeks and, with a bit of luck, the brilliant midfielder should be back in action. Theo Walcott could be even quicker and, after a whole year out, Tomas Rosicky, it seems, isn't far away. Factor in the likely impact of new boy Andrei Arshavin and Arsenal's attacking options start to look fearsome. On top of all this, one or two signs suggest that William Gallas is finally settling down after an erratic period following his loss of the armband. For a few months the defender's head was all over the place, as if he just couldn't cope with the demotion. A move in the summer appeared the only solution. Yet at Tottenham the other week he was Arsenal's best player, full of determination and guile to frustrate opponents carrying a one-man advantage. Combining well with Kolo Toure, the centre-half reminded us of his qualities. The team as a whole then showed their attacking potential during Monday's win. After a poor spell in front of goal, the old swagger returned to lift the crowd. And it needed lifting after so much mediocrity. Crucial, then, that momentum is maintained by beating Roma and Burnley in the cup competitions. If they can't do that, Arsenal's season is in danger of dying altogether, with only an uphill chase remaining for a top-four spot. I say uphill because Chelsea, five points ahead, are bound to be rejuvenated by Guus Hiddink's arrival. What's more, Aston Villa show no sign of faltering, armed with a seven-point advantage over the north Londoners. Mind you, the chase for fourth place gets interesting this weekend. With Chelsea travelling to Villa Park, an Arsenal home win over Sunderland would at least cut the slack. It isn't ideal. It certainly isn't what Arsenal fans were hoping. But that's what they've been left with by a side that, for all their talent, still needs some extra steel to go the full distance. Having said that, it's a side more than capable of finishing with a sprint. It could be enough to cause some excitement. The article is a surprise and that last statement was even a bigger one. How things change so quickly !!! ![]() |
What was United's strength against the team that walloped Arsenal 4-0?? Ronaldo and Tevez weren't even on the reserves bench. No Giggs, Scholes, Hargreaves and Van Der Sar!!! Those 6 names participated in Moscow so what are you on about??
@ Sauron, I won't leave you alone on this subject matter. This was the Manure team that night, and I tell you they were the big guns Van der Sar,ferdinand,vidic,evra,brown,fletcher.carrick.anderson,nani,park and rooney. On the bench were Kuszczak,Scholes,O shea,Saha and Tevez. Saha came in for Rooney and Scholes came in for Anderson So, you see that, all the guys you thought were not around for the match were very much there ![]() It was Arsenal's B team vs Manure's A team!!! ![]()
Besides. . . . .Have you forgotten the Highbury showdown of February 2005?? United beating the INVINCIBLES 4-2 on their home soil??
Yeah, we were beaten home and away that season, yet it didn't count, because we finished above you!!!! ![]() |
@ Sauron This was the line up in that ill fated match at OT that you won't allow us to rest. Lehman,Hoyte, gallas, toure,Traore, eboue,Fab,Silva,Hleb,Eduardo and Bendtner. Only Gallas,Toure,Fab,Hleb and to some extent Eboue were first teamers. The duo of Eduardo and Bendtner led our attack in the CC,Hoyte and traore were CC players,Gilberto was also a CC player(Flamster had displaced him) and Lehman must have been goalie for Arsenal less than 5 times prior to then. Ade, Flamini (Ade and Flamster were 1st teamers)and Senderos came in when the match was done and dusted around 70th minute with Manure leading 3-0 and dont forget that the Stupid Eboue had been sent off very early in the 2nd half. We were half strength at OT. Manure can't beat a full strength Arsenal team 4-0 No way |
Why are the scummies all over this thread ?Ok, Sauron,Emperoh and co We are sorry, we beat Cardiff We promise to lose to Burnley in the next round. ![]() I haven't seen so much venom in months We all dont disturb you when you celebrate victories over Derby and co and your 1-0 results Na wa oooh If we lose, you guys will be here poking fun If we win, You wont allow us to rest Emperoh has even gone to dig out a story that's about a month old, that even the website said it was all speculations!!! ![]() Why not go and dig up other ones like, when Ade broke Nic's nose, Gallas caught with a ciggie, van persie's alleged rape case etc ![]() What an obsession!!! |
Eastbay:Seriously From the first day, I got involved in this arguement,my inner instinct told me,your brain was empty. Now I have been proved right. OMG, this is scandalous. I have been arguing with a Retarded Scummie. CR7 was first. Ade and Torres were joint 2nd, you idiot!!!!! Gosh,How can a human being be so daft? Did u do maths in school at all? So, If manure has 45 points and chelsea and Arsenal are tied on 44 points? they(Chavs and Arsenal) are joint 3rd ![]() ![]() ![]() Omo, You are proper ODE(Yoruba for slowpoke) Please, its the last time, am gonna argue with you. Else, like Mohammed Ali said My IQ would start reducing geometrically Joint 3rd ?? ![]() OMG I hope you dont plan to have kids. It would be unfortunate to transfer what's in your brain to any of them!!! Nairaland sef ? |
So what do we call it.Ok, let me reduce it.(dismantle is too harsh) We beat Manure 2-1 at the Emirates. Who knows? This was culled from bbc.co.uk I thought it was nice. Eversince Eduardo had his leg broken into two distinct parts by a typically British neanderthalic challenge, for me this had been the start of a long negative aura that had surrounded our team. Immediately by observation it was clear to see that the balance of our side was highly distorted. The pyschological impact of the injury itself was also underestimated, and anyone that tries to deny that its long term implications were not inextricably tied to our title challenge simply has no clue about psychology in sport. For whatever reason, Wenger has not been spending money and has been persisting with his nurturing of young players, giving them experience whilst trying to maintain the Wenger philosophy of playing football on the ground. Since the injury of Eduardo, the club has seen key departures in Flamini, Gilberto and Hleb. This will have not only disturbed the spirit and unity in the first team but naturally creater further new challenges of trying to conjure the required replacements from whatever resources we have. The fans have been the first victims of these witnessed adverse events and this has resulted in the team being booed on a number of occasions. Where there was optimism, it was replaced with pessimism. Where there was will and belief, it was replaced with self-doubt and uncertainty. And until yesterday I can feel that slowly the tide has turned, the storm has cleared and the old feelings of optimism and belief are slowly finding themselves back with the fans and club. The signing of Arshavin for me has been inspirational. He hasn't played yet and we have no idea if he will be a hit or a flop but that is not the point. Arsenal have signed an established name, synonymous with quality and class, and this has projected a whole new breath of fresh air throughout the team and fans. I believe he contributed to the mental steel that prevented Spurs getting 3 points against a 10-man Arsenal. I believe that he contributed yesterday to the confidence and fluidity of our play with the players feeling a new collective beginning knowing that Arshavin is in the squad and of course, welcoming the return of Eduardo. With Rosicky suppposedly on his way back, Walcott and Fabregas keen to return shortly, and a host of youngsters consistently knocking on the door of the first team, the optimism is back. It has returned and the storm is fast fading away. Yesterday's performance showed a balance to our side that we have only experienced in parts during the season. We haven't tasted defeat in 11 games and only now has the party just started. Of course I hope the new found positivity in the camp is not ephemeral but lasting. My optimism says so and I look forward to seeing an Arsenal team back on the rise. |
debosky:Dont mind the scummies! Arsenal fans and indeed the entire football fraternity, was celebrating the return of Eduardo to football, and what a way of stating I am back! ![]() Two goals. ![]() On that dark day in March 2008, I was almost in tears seeing that injury, because what raced through my mind and many others,, was that Dudu may recover from the injury, but would he ever play football again at the highest level ![]() Thank God, that question was answered yesterday. ![]() Welcome back DUDU You are on your way to becoming an Arsenal legend. ![]() Meanwhile, the next few weeks will really define our season. We have got 2 matches every week till March 14. Come on, Red and White army!!! ![]() |
