South West Has Second Highest Number of Stunted Children In Nigeria - UNICEF

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that the south-west has the second highest number of stunted children in Nigeria. UNICEF Communication Officer, Blessing Ejiofor, speaking at a meeting on child nutrition in Ogun state attributed the high number of stunted children in the region to acute malnutrition. She revealed that 19.4% of children in South West are stunted, which is only second to what is obtained in the North.

UNICEF

She said; “However, 19.4 per cent of children in South-West Nigeria are stunted. This figure is worse than the figure for the South-East and the south-south but better than the North as we would see during the presentations. This calls for more work by everyone – government and all of us.

“As agenda setters, we must do more to keep child nutrition conversations on the priority list of those that can act to reverse this ugly trend.

“UNICEF believes that journalists can help set the agenda for action against all forms of child malnutrition, be it severe acute malnutrition or stunting. This, the media can do by creating heightened awareness among leaders and citizens. The media remains UNICEF’s major ally as we work for every child, everywhere, to build a better world for everyone.

Personally I agree with the troll a little bit. Let’s not further divide the south east. Instead, let’s push for Anioma state.

Ndoni are in between in identity crisis, like 50/50. I can tell you this, because they are my neighbours. They claim Igbo when in the midst of other Igbo's, and Ndoni ethnic nation when the occasion is favourable. However, they're not poised to join the south east because they've ruled before as Governor. They may be if the occasion presents itself, but I can say for now.
But we on the other hand, have always protested our removal from our Igbo brothers. Imo state is where our soul is, not Rivers and it's anti-Igbo sentiments.

Thank you for the information. I will discuss this issue with my grandmother when I see her again in 2020.

It’s a sad situation being in identity crisis.

I know that one day, those who denied being igbo when the situation wasn’t so favorable will eventually start claiming igbo after we become very developed and successful.

My advice to those people is if you reject being igbo today, then reject it forever. Don’t come decades from now and start claiming igbo.

That’s why I strongly believe that Igbos should pour all their energy and resources to develop Igboland.

I can assure you that the prodigals will look back one day and regretting.

You don't know what you saying.

As far back as my days in University if a boy of 16 yrs with Igbo name can deny he is not Igbo Infront of all standing then the denial is strong.

Someone a friend asked me to harbour back then since he is new so as to settle properly. First met him and glanced through his sleep saw a name like Odozi and I said you igbo?
Where you from...

Next boom........Nooooooo I am not Igbo...I be...this I be that. Even the camera man one old man like that shock even tried to explain...anyway cut it off

Not only him but it is general.

With such age bracket then denying it today is a total wash off.

Thatss your grandma not today again.

Wow sorry for your bad experience. But then again, I visited when I was young so you probably right that they have igbo identities crisis or igbo denial. I just never got that sense from my grandmother.

@ beachlife

The reason why your presence here is viewed with suspicion is that throughout the history of this thread, there have been so many non igbo people constantly pretending to be igbos who have beeen trying very hard to disrupt this thread.

This has been happening since last year and the Nairaland mods don’t do anything. In fact the Nairaland mods enjoy it because they are non igbos and don’t like igbos.

There is a particular character that has multiple accounts that has been disturbing the peace on this thread for years.

If everyone seems unwelcoming to you, that is the reason.

Again Ndoni has benefitted a lot from Rivers state and are tied with the Ogba people in identity crisis. Only us in Onelga are pro-Igbo, others are happy with their new ethnicity.
So please, we're not tied in one destiny with them.

Ndoni to my knowledge don’t have identity issues. My maternal grandmother is from there. Unless things have changed over the years.

This was to be the first high rise building in the SE. Located along factory road aba, this building (15 story high) was being built by dubic around 2010/12.He began construction of the edifice after Guinness brewery acquired his brewery. It would have hosted a mall and hotel among other facilities. Unfortunately, he died after the building got above the underground floors.A year later his eldest son died when the building got to two floors above the ground. with his family locked in litigation over inheritance, the contractors packed up-even though rumours abound that Dubic paid in full for the project

This is very sad. I hope the family settles the dispute and finish the project.

I would ideally prefer a port at Onitsha area. What ethnicity is River state part of ?

Rivers state is multiethnic. It has igbos, Ijos, Ikwerre, ogoni etc.

Me too. Onitsha should be able to contain bigger vessels but it is much farther away from the open sea when compared to Obuaku in Abia state.

If you look at a live satellite ,you would see that river is shallow at only 20 ft deep and 200 M wide. There are a few small islands in between which further narrows the width .The entire river is in Calabar(Akwacross) Territory based on international law.
Igboland can either have a river port at Onitsha which I prefer, but will cost billions of dollars , or have a dry port with a connecting railway to Calabar/akwa ibom seaport . But i'll advise igbolanders to be more diplomatic in their agitations and less antagonistic towards other ethnic nations, especially their neighbor and allies i'll assume the Calabarians . We all have our strengths and weakneses and can work together for benefit of all . Do you see Sweden fighting Norway or South Korea fighting Japan? I think that of all Nigerian and African ethnicity Igbos and calabarians are the most cohesive allies. Just because South Korea and Japan are cohesive does not mean they should be one country .
P.s I think the ethnic groups first need to unite internally to curb internal strife and sabotage ,then they can all decide on causes of actions. No ethnic nation can secede alone, but imagine if Yorubaland,Igboland,Calabar,Ijawland ,Kanuriland, etc. all speak with one voice and have a diplomatic agreement on autonomy or secession . Right now none of these groups are internally united.

The river on the map is between rivers state and Akwa Ibom state.

It’s only 23 nautical miles from the open sea.

“The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea now gives a landlocked country a right of access to and from the sea without taxation of traffic through transit states. The United Nations has a programme of action to assist landlocked developing countries,[11] and the current responsible Undersecretary-General is Anwarul Karim Chowdhury.”

Please when you have time, read up on the United Nations laws of the sea

Also barges are used all over the world to transport goods and commodities up the river. See the pictures below.

A functional river port can be built at the southern tip of Abia state and goods conveyed with barges to the port. This is being done to all over the world as we speak.

Politics / Re: Nigeria Can Only Exist Peacefully As A Tribal Democracy. by horsepower101: 10:43pm On Dec 30, 2019
YungMillionaire:
I have heard the argument that Nigerian democracy should be similar to American democracy. Meaning that if you live (or were born) in a state you should be able to run for elective office even though your tribe is not from that state. While this sounds good in theory, in reality it is a very dangerous idea. This might work in America but not in Nigeria. If you live in a state and you are not an indigene or member of the state's tribe you should respect yourself and not run for elective office. Otherwise, it will lead to resentment against nomadic tribes who are far more likely to be found outside their states of indigene than other tribes. Tribal co-existence of Nigeria is paramount to the fate of this country. Those that seek to impose European/American ideals on Nigeria will inevitably drive this shaky union off the proverbial cliff.

At the bolded

A shaky union and a shaky relationship have one solution in common.

They need to break up.

Any union or relationship that is not built on solid foundation will eventually end no matter how much or how hard you try.

The sooner we accept this glaring fact, the better for us and our future generations.

Please stop giving out false pictures, the said project is still on Earth work, mechanical works are yet to start. Assa is my community, ANOH should do the needful...give room for Assa Engineers to be part of this project not by selecting just few, we the youths are doing our best to remain peaceful but with they way Seplat, Shell and ANOH are treating Assa community and youths, I pray it should not get ugly. We can't fold our arms and watch non-indigenes take over 80% of jobs.

But what if the indigenes don’t have the needed skills for the project? What do you suggest that they do?

Ok I am dealing with a 7 year old. Things are finally making sense. No wonder why you are so delusional about Nigeria and always living in fantasy. Makes perfect sense. Hopefully you finally grow up one day. Although that might be wishful thinking on my part.
