How long does it take to fatten a cow? I saw a 6 month old cow somewhere in Kenya and was awed. it looked so big.
And now is the best time to buy cow especially in the north, they look so thin and terribly fed this period.

Nice thread. How about watermelon? Does it require such special attention like cukes and other vegies?
Agriculture / Re: FG To Buy More Tractors For Youth Training by hoyze24: 1:52pm On Nov 15, 2018
As good as the thought of tractors are, they are too expensive for the average Nigerian farmer and we are going to need a lot of it to fill the current machinery deficit in our agricultural system. There are cheaper, smaller and simpler tools and machinery that would appeal more to small holder farmers and also affordable.
Romance / In Need Of Roommate In Benue Or Taraba by hoyze24: 5:47pm On Nov 12, 2018
I've been shuttling between Benue and Taraba states for agricultural business in almost a year now, though I often travel outside these two for other purposes. In January, I made part payment for an apartment (a single room self-contained) with a guy who works in Zaki Biam. In less than a month after moving in, I traveled to Lagos for business where i spent about 6 weeks. On getting back, I noticed the guy already turned the apartment into a mini bar, all sorts of people disguised as friends come there to drink. I was visibly angry at the sight of this and I was quick to caution him on such barbaric acts. He showed remorse and his apology seemed from the heart. However, few weeks after, this started happening again while i was away, a neighbor called to inform me of this. On getting back this time, he told me how difficult it will be stopping his friends from coming over every now and then, I tried to reason with him but it was too much to bear for someone like me. Hence, I decided to vacate the apartment and spent some few days in a hotel before leaving in June. I've been away since then but I need to go back this month since it's the commencement of another phase of my agricultural business. This time, however, I need to get things right in planning my stay. I don't want to take similar steps and make the same mistakes. I need someone who stays in Katsina Ala, Zaki Biam, Wukari or somewhere along the Sankera axis. Preference is given to Wukari cos of the university environment. If you stay there or have someone who does, I need your assistance. I'll pay my portion of the rent and provide good food for both of us. I wouldn't mind a room in a flat as well. Could be male or female. YOU MIGHT WONDER
Why don't I get a room myself instead of trying to get a roommate? I spend less time there, so I don't want to go through the financial rigor of getting some household materials such as mattress, cooking materials and the rest. That's why I need someone who have these things already.
How about the option of staying in a hotel? Tried this already and made lots of inquiries, turns out all hotels here don't want to rent out their rooms long term and when they do agree, they are unwilling to offer any form of discount. For instance, the cheapest decent hotel in Katsina Ala is 1500/night. Staying there for a month of 30 days cost 45k. I spoke with the manager severally to allow me stay here for 15k/month but he wouldn't budge. Seems they would rather have their rooms empty. You can send me a dm or contact me via the no on my profile.
I hope to get the needed help like always on nairaland.

I knew the bridge would collapse sooner than later. I had my eyes closed on the bridge last time i plied that road in June. In fact, it's a metal sheet that connects the two ends of the road and only small and medium sized vehicles can access it. it's a pity those people would have to be cut off at a time like this when harvest is at its peak.

Jobs/Vacancies / Npower Beneficiaries Absorption Into The Civil Service: A Critical Look. by hoyze24: 11:14am On Aug 05, 2018
The last few weeks have been filled with calls from different quarters for the absorption of the 2016 Npower beneficiaries into the civil service upon completion of the two year program. A critical look at the unemployment situation in the country would suggest such call is timely and should be given due consideration by the government. Going with the terms of engagement of the program on the other hand would suggest otherwise. It should be understood that the Npower scheme is one of the four pillars of the social investment program (SIP) of the current administration aimed at developing manpower, tackling unemployment and reducing poverty. Each program under the SIP has its terms and conditions. In the private sector, programs such as this are termed graduate trainee programs, here participants are exposed to the workings of the organization and are provided trainings that would aid their seamless absorption into the organization. It is common knowledge in such programs that not every participant will eventually get to work in the organization at the end of the trainings. Those selected are ones who must have displayed good grasp of what's being taught, resilience in character and prospect of valuable contributions to the growth of such company. In making those selections, there are checklists used in measuring performances of individuals in various aspects of the training. A critical look at the workings of the Npower scheme reveals several organizational flaws. Many participants are deployed to non existing or underperforming places of assignment where there's little or nothing to do. Also, many beneficiaries are not fully engaged even when facilities to work with are available. A large number of beneficiaries take the program as a passive income source, they spend most times attending to other jobs and only come around when there's news of impending inspection. Hence, it wouldn't be wrong to say there are faults on Npower organizers as well as the beneficiaries. However, the idea of retaining them on a permanent basis not be taken seriously by anyone. Applying measures employed in the private sector for selection would however be a welcome approach. Here, effective monitoring and supervision would be enforced and only those who have proven to be hardworking, valuable and of good character and work ethics will be absorbed into the civil service. These persons would have proven beyond doubt that they are deservedly worthy of their places. For instance, teachers who have been able to improve the academic performances of their wards could be considered. Likewise agro workers who through hardwork are able to help farmers increase productivity, enhance good practices and in the long run increase their income deserve to be retained. Just as outstanding corp members are recognized and awarded in the NYSC scheme, similar measures could be applied here, only this time, the reward will be employment into the civil service. Undertaking these activities could appear daunting but it's a good way to ensure we get only qualified people to work for government. The task can be made easier through collaboration with states and local governments to ensure proper monitoring and evaluation. As a suggestion, 1% of beneficiaries could be absorbed in each batch and projects to be considered for nomination should align with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United nations. This is sure to spur participants to do better. There are extraordinary brains and great minds involved in this program, hence, this could be a way to getting more innovative people involved in transforming the civil service. The idea of having a job juat because one is unemployed should be abolished, rather getting a job should be for people who are dedicated, qualified and ready to add value.
Education / Re: Tsakuwa Primary School In Taraba In Bad Condition (Photos) by hoyze24: 3:50pm On Jul 04, 2018
There are many of such schools in the state, I'm quite familiar with events there. This local government is inhabited by the Yandang people and alongside mumuye are averse to learning but this shouldn't have stopped government from putting up a better facility. The infrastructural gap in the state is massive, human development is low and poverty is well entrenched in the land. I was in Gadawa, a remote village in Yorro lg last year and the people there are literally cut off from their neighbors during rainy season.

The first time I got to Abakaliki at night, I was curious to find out where I was. The whole place looked so nice and well beautified. The governor's stride in developing Ebonyi should be commended, for God's sake, he's doing it with meagre reaources. ultimately in the long term, the return on these investments will be worth it.

Many had complained of ordering for tubers and not getting anticipated sizes. This is a different approach, you see before buying. Greetings. I hope it's not late to ask about yam business again. I would appreciate to know the current price of yam from farmers in Benue. When is it best to buy. I am based in Lagos. What is the transport cost all the way down too? Thank you.
Hmm! If you're planning to sell in mile12, learnt there's been glut in market recently and that has forced down prices. I would assume you've done your research well on where to sell and the preferred varieties in your area. Concerning prices, it varies with varieties. So, always beware when someone gives you a generic price for sizes or you could ask the variety.

Thanks @fluentifor.
Really I did a business plan base on what the Tiv guy told me and also claiming he has a first hand experience in it. But after I stepped in, I threw the business plan our of the window because it was far from the reality. I had to learn things first hand before accepting okay this is what and what it takes to achieve so and so.

But I will always accept the fact that so many stupid mistakes were made on my side.

Secondly on going the distance to farm
If I had known someone who could guide me from the west I would have head on straight to the west but it's sad (maybe it's a blessing) that the Tiv guy was the first person to draw my attention to agriculture and having to farm in Port Harcourt is a no no except you want the locals (militants) to then your farm to an extortion ground. That was what led me to Benue and also the fact that I thought that it's only in the north that they have enough of fadama lands not knowing some part of the west has too. Though the fadama lands here are quite vast and good with large rivers for irrigation.
Wow! You really put a lot on the line. What part of Benue did you cultivate the rice? I also have farms in katsina ala.
