It's 79 days before 2017 runs out. What a year it's been with people having different experiences. Regardless of how the year has been, you can still make something out of the days left. Why not think agriculture at this point? Start small and scale with time. You can start preparing for irrigation farming or marketing of produce. Many produce that might get so expensive come march and April next year are currently cheap. Why not look beyond now and change your financial situation? He who's not ready to take risk doesn't deserve riches.

NYSC / Few Days To Pop: Solutions To Unplanned Birth Of Jobseekers by hoyze24: 11:56am On Oct 13, 2017
The thoughts of ending the compulsory one year service to fatherland can be disheartening for many. Even though most people would publicly profess they can't wait for the service year to come to an end, deep down they are engulfed with the fear of what happens next. Over the years, people have come to realise the need to rely less on paid employment (that are hard to come by) and opt for businesses in whatever form. However, the business atmosphere in the country is so challenging that even mainstream players are finding it difficult to operate effectively. It's few days to the POP of the 2016 batch 'B' stream 1 corp members, so here I'm going to be stating some activities and businesses you can engage in while you continue searching for paid employment. Some can however kick start their careers from these. These businesses can be started with as little as #40000 which I believe the most extravagant corp member should be able to save.
CONFECTIONERY AND PASTRIES: The demand for pastries grow each passing day and believe me people's taste are continually changing. So, for anyone with requisite knowledge in the making of doughnuts, small chops, sausage, samosa, cakes and so many others. You can enhance your skills by starting out with the little capital you have. It would be unwise to target the large market rather try to dominate a small portion of the market while you expand.
RETAILING OF SECOND HAND CLOTHINGS (OKRIKA): This business is booming largely due to the underdevelopment of Nigeria and I see it getting bigger. Get reliable sources to buy from and always ensure you buy the A-grade that looks like new. Also target a smaller market and package your stocks. Have you imagined repackaging these wears in a better form rather than just placing it on the ground like it's mostly done? You can do that in your case. Ensure to offer good prices and know your target markets. *here is a secret, female wears sell faster than male, you know the ladies always want to slay even with half empty purses*.
IMPORTATION BUSINESS: Why use your phone for social media alone when you'll be consuming the same amount of data shopping on ecommerce sites in Asia? The importation business has helped Nigerians a lot as it has made it easy to obtain various materials directly from manufacturers. Of interest however is phones and computer accessories. The population of phone users keep increasing by the day, this provides a good market for accessories as people would always have problems with their phones one time or the other. Ensure you know the type of phones generally used in your area and get quality accessories as this is what counts. However, a lot of care need to be taken in this trade, ensure you learn from experienced people so as to avoid being swindled by scammers.
MARKETING OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE: This is a very old business that's been dominated by uneducated folks. Before the period of mass unemployment in Nigeria, no educated individual would consider this a viable source of income. With proper knowledge about source of supply and target markets, one can make it big time in this business. Recognise areas where some commodities are produced in large quantities and transport it to target markets where demands are high. It's not advisable to travel far distances with little capital in businesses such as this as the profit made might be very small. You can have someone get the commodities for you while you sell to people around you at good prices.
INVESTMENT: There are quite a number of good investments in town at the moment that offers good returns after a period of time ( not ponzi schemes). Get necessary information about the credibility of the investments and sit back while you watch your money grow. There's a large foray into agricultural investment at the moment.
SUPPLY OF VALUABLES: There was a friend of mine who started to buy semolina, wheat, beans powder and so many other staple foods when she finished service. She bought in large quantities at low prices and sold to people in her neighborhood and church. She offered to always deliver to their doorsteps and in no time they began to rely on her to get anything concerning food for them. This was where she made it. You can start something similar or employ another approach.
FARMING: Good old farming, I don't think I can love any profession more. People must eat and defecate, companies will continue to need raw materials. This is an indication that farming will forever be relevant. As sweet as that sounds, you need to be prepared to face the challenges that come with good practices. Start as little as you can and scale appropriately.
Finally, you should be glad your POP is coming at a time close to Christmas which is a good time to make money for intelligent and street smart individuals.
Note: All the businesses stated above are note fail proof, all businesses are bound to fail. What guarantee successful businesses are what the owners know and do. Wish you the best in life endeavors.

Darius should do something about this. There was something similqr where I stayed while I was in the state. The government probably doesn't want to spend money on this due to seasonality of rivers in the north. This same river will get almost totally dried up by February.
Investment / Re: Crowd Funding For Supply Of PKO by hoyze24: 7:44am On Oct 11, 2017
solreb:

Your analysis is wrong. 1 ton of pkn produces 440 liter (if everything is ok, nuts are shell free, pko expeller working efficiently, etc). Pkn price is currently about N125k per ton with the best price of pko being N350k per ton. Other factors to consider is availability of pkn as it is scarce now. To have regular supply of 75 tons you need you pay as high as N130k. Finally put in cost of power as I doubt they have regular power in Ekiti unlike oshogbo. All these will shrink your profit. I have a pko factory in Ondo so I am talking from experience.
Thanks for this analysis.

Having stayed in the north central and north eastern part of Nigeria for sometime. I can say the fight against importation of rice is only visible in rural areas. In Benue especially, a larger part of the population comsume locally milled rice. In lagos however, the only you hear of is lake rice and few other ones which make up less than 5% of the total volume comsumed in the state. I strongly believe there are some marketers out there to frustrate efforts of government to ban importation. It's true foreign rice are cheaper but we spend a whole lot of dollars getting them. Local production can meet local demands in two years, we are catching up fast enough. More meaning Nigerians need to invest more in rice and wheat production, there's a whole lot of money to be made in every value chain of these crops.

The outgoing week is a big one. We had thought corrupt practices had been decimated by the current administration but it's surprising to see oil contracts worth $25b being undertaken without the knowledge of appropriate authorities. It's still an allegation anyway, let's wait and see more of it in the coming weeks. I really love Nigeria and I can't wait for us to be great again.
Agriculture / Re: Tips On Effective Marketing Of Agricultural Produce Anywhere In Nigeria. by hoyze24: 6:23pm On Oct 07, 2017
Sorry this is coming a long time after the last post, I’ve been really busy. So, let’s get on by considering the issue of logistics. Logistics is the process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient and effective flow and storage of goods, services and related information from their point of origin to the point of consumption for the purpose of satisfying customer requirements. It’s obvious from the definition how important logistics is in marketing. It’s the wish of every marketer to get products to customers in almost exactly the same condition it was purchased, unfortunately this do not happen in many cases due to poor handling of products at different stages. After proper examination of produce purchased, the next process is making arrangements for the transportation of these produce to destination markets. In many cases, movement can be in a single process while many times it involves series of movements. It’s worthy of note to state that as a marketer, logistics is the phase of marketing that requires one attention the most, poorly coordinated logistics lead to decline in the quality of produce which will definitely affect the price in destination market. Also, there might be cases of theft and overcharging especially by cart pushers if not properly monitored. It’s the duty of a marketer to ensure goods are handled properly during loading and offloading. Avoid being in a hurry especially if you are just starting or unfamiliar with the terrain of the marketplace. For instance, when I started yam marketing, I was always present at every point my yams were taken before being loaded in trucks. Even when I was told to allow the boys do their work, I stood as close as possible to prevent stories that touch. Trucks that will be involved in the long haul of your produce to destination market must be of good physical condition and always ensure you get either the driver or the motor boy contact to ensure tracking of your goods. Though this might not apply to everyone but it’s something I do every time - I ensure I obtain the contacts of few of the other marketers who have goods in the truck. Do well to contact the motor boy to monitor their movement. I guess we should be treating sales in destination market in the next post. Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks for your advice. Buying from the villages and selling to Urban centers is what I will try.
Conducting another market research in Lagos is not feasible for now(finance). But I am considering aggregate supply(sourcing demands from many retailers and supplying them at once).

P.S We Corp members in my Local government want contribute and buy like one bag of garri and share in order to save money. Do you know of any reliable farmer/supplier of garri that can send to Jos from Benue.
Thanks.
Sending one bag of gari to Jos isn't economical. The price difference in large markets there wouldn't be much.

thanks alot op for sharing. Am currently in similar environment:I am currently serving in one of the remote village in plateau state. Over here the major farm produce is salad vegitables like garbage, carrot, cucumber, green beans etc and also potato. During my two weeks initial break, i did market survay about these farm produce in 3 major market in lagos. It was clear that the market was developed with a lot of big trailers arriving everyday bringing carrot, carbage, cucumber potatoes etc from plateau and the north. On further enquiry from the malams, they said that the price is very volatile that prices can jump from 5k to 8k and vice verser in a just a day. They said that if i intend sending it from plateau, that i have to get someone who will be selling it for me since i dont intend saying in the market. I conclded that it is better to sale to retailers and small wholesalers since since the open market in lagos for these produced is congested. I dont have any retailers contact for now and am not going to Lagos any time soon. So please I will like suggestion on how to take advantage of this opportunity because plateau state has a comparative advanage in farming salad vegitable and potatoes especially irish potatoes in Nigeria.
You don't need to fear the competition in the market, you can start on a small scale to test the market. Prices are very volatile cos they are perishable goods-owners are forced to reduce prices for fear of spoilage. I know yams are being sold with the help of middlemen called de lali, don't know if that applies to those produce as well. Anyway, get to the market and conduct more research. If not, you can buy from farmers in your location and sell to wholesalers from urban centres. Good luck.

In Lokoja, rice can only be grown twice a year because of the large presence of birds who are notorious for eating up the rice grains befote harvest.
My dad once lost a 2 hectare rice farm without a single grain harvested when we came new to Lokoja.
The knowledge of locals is vital here
I've cultivated rice in Taraba and Benue and I've never had issues with birds except for few ducks in Bali and that was due to closeness to residential areas.

EMMAACHILE:

Rice farming is one of the most difficult to do. In Kogi especially Lokoja area, the rice must be timed to avoid disaster of birds consuming all the grains at harvest.
There are easier crops to cultivate.
If I must play in the rice industry, i will go for a rice mill where a 200kg rice paddy of 14,000 will produce a 150kg of refined rice (3 bags) which wholesales for 14,000*3=N42,000.
A return of at least 100% is guaranteed.
It's quite difficult but not as regards birds eating it up when dried. Concerning your thoughts about 200kg paddy being milled into 150kg refine rice, maybe you need to conduct more research.

Happy new month and independence to everyone. Nigeria is just so blessed, think of the various crops that can be cultivated in Nigeria, the abundant fertile lands and the good people with diverwe ideas willing to work. No matter the value chain you're involved in, you'll make it with adequate knowledge and honesty. My agricultural dream for Nigeria is to be self sufficient in rice and wheat production by 2030, that's a long time to get necessary resources for proper cultivation, processing, storage, marketing and consumption put in place. Now, tell me, what's your agricultural dream for Nigeria?
Investment / Re: Invest In Marketing Of Agricultural Produce And Forever Thank Me. by hoyze24: 3:04pm On Oct 01, 2017
Has anyone thought about how profitable rice farming is? The demand for locally produced rice keep going up by the day. The likes of Olam and Ashi don't even have enough rice to mill, they are fierce competition with local millers. Coupled with government drive to ban importation of rice, aren't these enough reasons for people to go into rice cultivation? Well! everyone hears but few act. Keep pondering on how to invest in agriculture, garner adequate knowledge about the value chain you're interested in and have someone with experience put you through. I bet agriculture is great. Nigeria is just so blessed. Happy new month and independence to everyone. Invest wisely before 2017 ends.
