The Senate on Thursday disregarded the petition by the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, against the clearance of President Goodluck Jonathan nominees for appointment into the board of the National Hajj Commission. The upper chamber, at plenary, ignored the petition and confirmed the appointments of the Chairman and Commissioners of the commission as requested by Jonathan. Jonathan had, in a letter to the senate two weeks ago, nominated Abdullahi Muktar Muhammad and eight others as Chairman and commissioners respectively in view of the expiration of tenure of the outgoing management of the commission on the 24th of this month. Senate President, David Mark, because of the urgency of the request, asked the committee on Foreign Affairs to screen the chairman and members of the NAHCON board and submit its report for consideration within two weeks. Presenting the report of the committee on the floor of the senate on behalf of his members, Senator Sani Saleh explained that series of petitions were fired against the appointment of the nominees. He said one of the petitions were received from the NSCIA, and some other stake holders. Saleh said the NSCIA, in its Petition, objected to the composition of the entire nominees presented to the senate for the appointment. He said the group claimed that contrary to the provision of the Act, the President made the nominations, and forwarded the list to the senate, without consultation with the NSCIA or the Sultan. NSCIA, according to him, quoted Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2006, which states that “The President shall, after due consultation, appoint persons of proven integrity as Chairman and members of the commission, subject to confirmation by the senate.” Saleh added that another petition was received from one Abdulmumini Adamu, who also kicked against the nomination of Muktar Muhammad as the Chairman designate without given any specific reasons. He said another petition filed by the Association for the Promotion of Consumer Rights International was withdrawn before the committee could look into their complaints. The committee in its recommendations, after going through the petitions, dismissed that of Adamu because he did not appear before it. The senate committee’s report explained details of how the nominees were screened without making recommendations for their approval. But the Senate, while considering the report, ignored the NSCIA petition by confirming the appointments of the eight nominees as proposed by Jonathan http://www.punchng.com/news/senate-overrules-sultan-clears-new-nhc-board-members/ |

A former Head of Service in Osun State, Mr. Segun Akinwusi, has blamed alleged financial recklessness by the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola for its inability to pay workers for over six months. Akinwusi said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Tuesday. . He said that rather than blaming President Goodluck Jonathan, Aregbesola should blame himself for plunging the state into financial crisis. The former HOS admitted that allocation accruing to the state had reduced, but stressed that this was not an enough reason to deny workers of their wages for more than half of a year. Akinwusi, who contested the last governorship election against Aregbesola on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, said that the administration borrowed much more than its ability to repay. He said, “They are quick to blame Jonathan for non-payment of workers for six months. Only the naive can believe them. Are they not getting allocation from Abuja? They are collecting allocation on monthly basis. “They borrowed so much. They borrowed more than their capacity to repay. The governor appointed an average of two commissioners for each ministry; they called the second commissioners special advisers but they all get the same salaries with the commissioners. “They should not blame Jonathan for their inability to pay, they should blame themselves. They are reckless. They borrowed twice the value of road projects they are executing. Work has since stopped now.” He said that there was no hope in sight for the people of the state, alleging that the current administration in the state had mortgaged the future of the state. According to Akinwusi, it will take the state almost 25 years to recover from the financial crisis it has been plunged into “by the recklessness of this administration.” Efforts to speak to Aregbesola’s media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, proved abortive as calls put across to him were not picked and a text message sent to him was yet to be responded to at the time of filing this report. However, the governor had blamed the Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government for the dip in the oil revenue accruing to the nation. He said this was the reason the wage bill was more than the allocation received from the federal level. Aregbesola said, “The PDP-led Federal Government has foisted double tragedy on the people through lack of transparency in oil revenues. http://www.punchng.com/business/appointments-management/ex-head-of-service-blames-osun-for-unpaid-salaries/ |
