Also, it's one thing to know how to do the whole tech stuff it's another to be confident in your skill. .
Put your self to test while undergoing training.
Pick up difficult challenge.
Don't leave your codes for too long else your codes will leave you. .. .
For the "from Zero" beginners. IT field can be likened to learning a new language.
Learn the insults first( the basic) Then gradually move to greetings Then a sentence.

God bless whoever created this thread. I am a Self taught front end dev. HTML, CSS, Java(basic), version control, PHP(basically form use), Email marketing, Cloud Hosting
Started my job search this month. (February) Jnr front end (keyword) on uk indeed
Been getting so many rejections and "unfortunately' mails. Not sure why..
Had to build a portfolio website for myself and Solicited to build a 1 page responsive site for random people for free just to add to my portfolio.
A Devop friend told me I don't need to know all the codes. I only need to know enough to get me the job..
Previously I restricted my search to Manchester (I'll be relocating soon). Now I will have to spread my tentacles even beyond Europe.
I will also create a LinkedIn profile or learn how to use the premium version.
I hope someone Learns from my steps. I am open to more tips and recommendation. |

Just wondering which unskilled job pays that high. mrcodebreaker: Too low. Aim higher.
From my calculations thats like 20k p/y
Alternatively, I recommend you take the job while you keep applying to other roles. Don’t put it in your linkedin or cv yet as recruiters will see you as a flight risk for wanting to jump ship. But keep applying to see if you can get something above 30k p/y. When you see something better you bounce. |

Thank you our tech mummy. Aphrodite007: Lol I’m not tech mummy o, let me call jtech (and the other real tech people) to contribute.
You can start applying from Nigeria but most times they will call you, and if your number is Nigerian they may not call. So best to wait till you get her and her a uk phone number.
Like you pointed out, you don’t have to know all. If your focus is frontend (which bit seems to be— wait, Java or JavaScript though?) practice well.
Offer people your service for free to build their website, then use that as proof of your skill (I think that’s what GitHub is for). Beef up your LinkedIn to look good and keep watching frontend vids (if you meant js) to improve your knowledge and speak the linguo convincingly.
But while searching for a dev job, do other smaller jobs. The smaller jobs will teach you the culture and help you twist your accent small. Although you don’t need these to get a dev job (cos they know devs are mostly foreigners), you def need it for growth/promotion. |

Thanks beryour: First, please understand that there is no set timing for moving into tech. Some might spend 6 moths, some will be less and some will be more. Several factors determine the transition period.
There are opportunities for Frontend guys, you might as well decide to push it up to full stack if you like but that will be you topping up your skills.
In as much as it is impossible to know ALL about the field, it is vital to have some basic knowledge and also have basic skills required to perform several tasks. Learning is continuous. You might try to develop a portfolio/GitHub profile as this will show potential employers that you have such experience or undertaken such projects.
I would say you should do all your preparations (CV/Portfolio) and begin to apply once you get in as most guys like to contact you immediately they see your CV to understand your position and also discuss more about the job. Also bear in mind that lots of employers seek 'UK' experience but this should not stop you. You might also like to do a bit of volunteering if you like.
Sample CVs can be downloaded online and then you can fine tune it or get someone to assist with that.
Good luck to you my friend. |

Our tech mummy. I have watched so many tech videos of newbies and how they got into tech. Specially those that claim 6months was all it took them. Honestly I don't think I have the slightest idea of what a CV for a tech dude should look like. I am a Frontend dude. Basically HTML, CSS & small JAVA. One thing I have come to understand from the videos I have watched is you don't have to know ALL about the field you in as there is room for growth secondly they would love to see a completed job on previous work.(I HAVE NONE) On this not I am considering hosting a responsive page for my LHASA-APSO dog. My Wife's COS just arrived for her UK nursing job and I should be joining her in a month or 2. 1.Do I start applying from 9ja or wait till I reach then apply to areas close to her? 2. Can you help me with a sample CV. 3. What other tip would you suggest to me. I am open to suggestions o our tech mummy Codeindo@pm.me Aphrodite007: Any form of education especially in tech is worth it. You’re not after the certificate but the tech knowledge to get a tech job. So it being online doesn’t matter, if anything it means you can do it conveniently while working on your T2.
Wish you well. |

dear,. I didn't change mine to hers and her father aint dangote. Thanks for the helpful comment. I'll have to wait for the visa to be granted then use her BRP and COS to process mine. Aphrodite007 Ejor, can i get few minutes of talk time on <\> Aphrodite007: Yes your passport number will change lol- it can’t be the old one because they will issue you a new expiry date. You can fill your current name and old passport number for now. When the new passport comes you’ll have to use that new name and new passport number (don’t worry, the data page will show the old passport number to create a link).
Alternatively you could wait to avoid any hussle. Men don’t change their names often, so I’m tempted to ask why you changed yours— but I’ll mind my business.

Good evening all. I applied for a change of name on my passport via an officer and he's been on the process for over 2 weeks. my wife's COS was sent to her this evening. And while filling the form i got to a spot that asked for my name and passport number as the dependent.. Please i want to know if the passport number will change upon completion of the change of name.. Please guys i need your advice Aphrodite007: Nothing wrong with what your wife said but make sure you indicate that you’re the sponsor. Attach your home deed to show she can stay with you guys, 3 months bank statement showing surplus money to show you can sponsor her, and your work contract or payslip to show you have a job.
Write letter of invitation too. Also if you have photo of you and her, attach. Niece is not a strong tie so better to give plenty documents that too little document. What you should worry about is how you’ll prove her toe to Nigeria and show that she will return.
Good luck . |

Layman advise. With student visa you can work officially for 20hrs per wk. Unofficially you can work as long as you can. Dont just go into any random course coz you wanna travel, there are good courses that after studying you automatically get extra 1/2 years to stay and work. There are so many in uni in the UK but i can recommend a few. Sonicroyel: Please I need someone to talk to in real time about loving to the UK. There's money on ground but I'm not really in tune with the process. If I go on a visitor visa I won't be able to work. What way do I take to be fully able to work in the UK ?
What sort of visa do u think would be in my interest?. |

Every one is willing to switch. Note: tech is quite similar to nursing, you need to understand the job. As a newbie, watch a lot of youtube to first understand what tech is about (dont believe those youtube guys saying they learnt in 3 months) I dont think it is realistic for someone with zero knowledge.. Tech is broad, pick an area and focus on it. Learn from basic to intermediate as there is no mastery level in Tech. The best tech guy still relies on stackoverflow and other online resources when they need to remember a code and command function.. .Also know that you don't have to migrate to the UK before you can get a job with a UK company. I am not talking you out of going to the UK, in my case i am going as a dependent. Best of luck guys. Remember the idea behind all these is to get a better life Okayoo: This is helpful. For me, am looking at completely switching to tech. But the challenge is that I have no experience or even have knowledge in it. Though studied Engineering but not IT related. I have been in the banking industry for years, marketing precisely. Now am willing to learn and hope to switch my career to tech. Is it possible for me to learn and be grounded in the tech field. |

Thanks. You just explained the much i needed mdeeokoye: Been a while, so from my experience so far. Having previous tech experience puts you in a commanding position for interviews and co and also an opportunity to show what you can do. Recently I have had a good number of friends come in from Naija from the company I work, they have seen that Nigerian devs are really good and our tech eco system is doing really well but you have to know your stuff. I see Nigeria becoming the new India in terms of tech in no distant time so if you have good experience you will get in easily here or if you get in here with a dependant visa you can actually get that sponsorship job really fast. Blending in might take a while depending on how fast you can but the base work is the same, same coding and all but a bit more organised here and they take their time here a lot. For those that have no experience, I would advise you do lots of practise, if you have friends that are developers in Naija, link up with them, get side Gigs even if it’s for free, do it get the experience package it very well on your Cv, even if after school you do not get a sponsored job after school start with any dev job you see, get the experience and then chase the sponsorship jobs, recruiters here are very keen about having Uk experience as well because they have that feeling you have had some form of validation to an extent. I have found out that not so many firms sponsor yeah, the ones that do not sponsor do very interesting stuffs and also use some amazing tech stack. Does not matter which language you do, there are lots of openings for different stack just know one very well and you would be fine. I’m my opinion in tech they need you more that you need them always bear that in mind and have that mind set in your interview, it worked for me ! Lastly getting the job is kinda the easy part, keeping the job is kinda more difficult cos you have to be on top of your game and also have to go the extra mile! |

One of my reason for migrating is to give my kids the best life. Afterall if my fore fathers went into slave trade back then, i for don experience snowby now. Fellow Nigerians reading this. Jappa from this country if you can, you'll be glad you did. It really dosent matter what you doing when you get there as long as you have a game plan. People have talked ill about carejobs and how if did not measure up to their former working ethics back in 9ja.(omo dont mind them o). I know someone who used carejob to build a nice structure back home. . Uzomarrr123: This is the kind of response they usually give “you will feel like running back to Nigeria yen yen yen” but you didn’t come back right
My dear sis who asked ,brace up ,migrate if you can ,one way or the other ,you will survive,
My sis moved to the UK 3 years back ,after completing the pharmacy degree in New Delhi,India …
She’s doing so well as a pharmacist there, that she practically used her earnings to complete the house our father was building in lagos ,Nigeria.
I am just sick and tired of seeing Nigerians staying in the UK and stylishly telling others not to migrate.
That other one was even claiming to support Buhari and he thinks Nigeria is getting better…just imagine
I will say it again…Nigerians in UK advising others not to migrate are evil period !
Even if you won’t become the richest person in UK, you are sure of a decent life for your kids and security …Nigeria is a no no ! |
