LordAdam16: CNG/LPG is the energy source of choice for transporters in places like India.
You're the one who said there's no ameliorative measure that could be enacted. I suggested one that has been implemented successfully in peer countries and you're asking about the impact. This is one example. Fancy theories are allowed. Does India give LPG subsidy to Transporters? FYI, a litre of PMS is N1,700 in India So if Indian private transporters have converted their tanks to take LPG, Nigerian Government should go and convert all private transporters tanks, or give them time to do so while paying billions of dollars in subsidies they don't have? 6 months later, only to find uptake is low? No worry, let price of PMS induce them. There is a market solution to everything. As fuel hit N600, we started seeing niggas start inquiring about converting their tanks. Nothing induces change like free market. Anger will make us theorise fanciful nonsense in this country. We have been theorising nonsense since independence. Someone who said they will remove subsidy on DAY ONE is now brainstorming unactionable and long term ideas that are unimplementable from DAY ONE. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Ibime(m): 1:57pm On Feb 10, 2024 |
LordAdam16: One initiative is to set up a handful of conversion facilities for registered commercial transporters. AFAIK, CNG/LPG price has comparatively lagged the non-subsidized gasoline price since the removal. Are these commercial transporters of goods or people? If people, what impact would this have except reduction of a small percentage of bus fares in some cities? The bulk of our transportation of people is done by private individuals There is no subsidy on diesel. It's price fluctuation is subject to FX rates, that is the Koko when it comes to goods |

Incognito9: So you're saying it's not necessary to analyze the situation before taking the hard decision. There is nothing to analyse. Even Nairalanders could tell them the effect of what they promised two years ago. They knew the effect on common man before they promised it. It's like amputating a rotten limb, nothing go sweet inside |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Ibime(m): 1:14pm On Feb 10, 2024 |
LordAdam16: I'm not talking about keeping subsidy, I'm talking about how it was removed. We could have afforded a six months extension until he had worked out modalities to ease the deleterious effect of the policy. From an operational standpoint, it was a boneheaded move. And if Obi had done the same thing, he would have caught flak from me. Will not stay "a day longer" is pretty clear. There is no method of amelioration to removing subsidy. What will they do? Share rice as palliatives? If you want to take hard decisions, you do so on your first day in office and give the citizens 4 years to adjust to the new reality before the next election. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Ibime(m): 1:06pm On Feb 10, 2024 |
TrebleChamp: Neither Obi nor Atiku would have removed subsidy on their first day in Office, they would have studied the situation and put proper measures in place before the removal. Tinubu guffed by announcing the removal of subsidy on his inauguration and the effect is now telling. They said they would so we'll take that at face value Nobody is unaware of the impact of subsidy removal. There is nothing to "study". It's a difficult pill for the countries citizens to swallow and they all knew they must swallow it and agreed to swallow it in their manifestos. If I know the effects as a common observer, a Presidential candidate surely does before making such statements. The problem is politicians will never fail to make political capital out of a shared problem. Ibime: Fuel subsidy is the only Govt support Nigerians receive. People will die if they remove it. Fundamentally, fuel subsidy is inefficient, but in Nigeria's case, removal of subsidy will drag people from poverty to death.
Peter Obi is for subsidy removal by the way. Some niggas go cry if they have to pay N500 per litre. N400 is the current landing cost, add jara for profit Ibime: The crux of the matter. Fuel subsidy is the only social support Nigeria gives to its citizens.
Also the cost of transportation can make up to 50 to 80% of the cost of basic agricultural foods that poor Nigerians eat, reason why you can buy items in the North and Middle Belt for 1/3rd to 1/2 the price in the South. Whereas cost of transportation will be like 5% of the input cost in the Western world where cost of labour is the big input cost. So the inflationary effect on Nigerians will be dire, hence economic models that say subsidies are inefficient are applicable to the Western world but as far as Nigeria, it will lead to unimaginable suffering and social turmoil if subsidy is lifted. |

LordAdam16: Neither Atiku nor Obi would have removed subsidy on Day 1. Heck, the refineries that Atiku had zeroed in to offload would not have been sold on Day 1.
How can you remove subsidy before appointing a substantive Minister of Petroleum? Float the naira without a CBN governor?
The entire "what would X have done differently" does not hold water because how the other candidates would have implemented the policy is a complete hypothetical. The Mr complained about Buhari and Emefiele's abrupt currency change policy. Then did the exact same thing TWICE.
-Lord 'I can assure you it will go immediately, I will not allow it to stay a day longer" Do we need dictionary to interpret that statement? I don't think anyone will want to remove subsidy. It's not a binary decision. Any commitment to keep subsidy comes with a silent "if we can afford it". You can't eat your cake and have it. With a backlog of unsettled $7bln FX transactions to local lenders and God knows how many billions to foreign companies such as aviation companies which haven't been settled for 2 years plus, all candidates could guess what was affordable and what was not and made their policies. Selling refineries which are moribund and will be for a while have no correlation to subsidy. Nigerian refineries (certainly PH) were working when Abacha started subsidy.

what's he gonna teach them? how to play back passes? He would make a good coach. He has positional sense, he is just severely lacking in speed and ability to turn out from an opponent. That positional sense is all you need for coaching |

Nigerians should all concern themselves with the state of their foreign reserves.
There is no number more important to Nigerians than the number that tells them about their Governments ability to defend the Naira. This alone controls inflation.
The detailing of the rising cost of living over the last 5 pages was inevitable. And it will only get worse and worse.
I cannot forget the words of Sanusi many months ago when the state of our reserves started becoming plain
“I can only plead with the people to endure the hardship, and those who have the means to help the downtrodden should do so." |
