INJUSTICE: How Abuja Police, ASP Prince Akhindenor, Connived with Karu Nasarawa Magistrate Court, Charges Young Girl for Criminal Offences for Refusing to Marry Him Defendant forced to pay One Hundred and Twenty-Five Thousand Naira in Cash for Bail;* -The Court Breached Nasarawa State Law – Female Lawyer An Abuja Assistant Superintendent of Police, Prince Akhindenor has charged a young girl, Miss Gloria Benjamin, to the Chief Magistrate Court “Upper” of Nasarawa State at Ado New Karu Nasarawa State, Near Abuja for refusing to agree to his proposal to marry her. In what seems like a connivance with the Magistrate Court officials, ASP Akhindenor filed a direct Criminal Complaint against the young girl who is a POS Operator for refusing to marry him and accused the girl of Fraud, Cheating, Criminal Breach of trust and Criminal Intimidation. According to the Court documents obtained by Lawblogng.com, the complaint was filed on the 16th of November 2023 by the Assistant Inspector of Police. In the Complaint, the ASP stated that he lent Miss Benjamin some money in the hope that she will marry him. He also stated that he bought her a piece of furniture and a sewing machine in his attempt to convince her to marry him. The ASP also claimed that Miss Benjamin insulted her when he requested his gifts and money back leaving him no choice but to charge the young girl to court. DEFENDANT ARRESTED BY COURT OFFICIALS, ARRAIGNED IN MAGISTRATE’S OFFICE WITHOUT A LAWYER AND FORCED TO PAY BAIL OF N 125,000.00 IN CASH. Narrating her ordeal to Lawblogng.com in tears, the defendant Miss Gloria Benjamin told Lawblogng.com that she was in her Shop on Thursday 16th of November 2023 near Muhamadu Buhari International Market Nasarawa, when court officials came with a police officer and a lawyer, Barrister Titus Ekpo to arrest her. They informed her that the court has summoned her immediately and she must follow them to court. According to her, she pleaded with them to allow her call her relations to notify them of her whereabouts but they refused and insisted that she must follow them immediately to court. According to her, when they arrived at the court, they informed her that she is standing trial for crimes she committed against ASP Akhindenor and gave her a copy of the charge. She tried to explain to them that she did not do anything wrong to the ASP but nobody listened to her. When she requested that they allow her to get a lawyer to help her, they informed her that she can only get a lawyer in the court premises. According to Miss Benjamin, the only Lawyer in court at that time was Barrister Titus Ekpo who was representing the complainant, ASP Akhindenor. The Registrar of the Court, Mr Ahmed Doma and the Clerk, Mr Ishaku Tanko advised her to beg Barrister Ekpo for help and she did. Barrister Ekpo promised to help her even though he was the one that brought the Charge against her. According to Miss Benjamin, even though the complainant was not around, the court officials took her to the office of the Magistrate who asked her if she is guilty of the Charges but she answered “not guilty”. The Magistrate told her that he has granted her One million Naira bail but if she cannot meet up with the bail, she will be taken to Keffi Prison. The traumatized Miss Benjamin revealed that when the court officials brought her out of the Magistrate’s office, the Court Registrar asked her to provide the One million Naira cash for Bail but She informed the Registrar that she has no way of raising such money. The Registrar told her that he will help her if she can bring N750,000 in cash but she could not bring the money. The Registrar later reduced the money to N500,000 and then to N300,000 and Miss Benjamin couldn’t still provide the money. The court officials informed her that she should prepare for Prison since she is not serious. According to a female Lawyer, the arrest and trial of Miss Benjamin on the same day the complaint was filed in court is against section 117 of the Nasarawa State Law for the Administration of Criminal Justice 2019 which stipulated that a proper summons containing the exact charges against a Defendant Must be served on the Defendant and two days minimum be given to the Defendant to answer the Charges. https://lawblogng.com/injustice-how-abuja-police-asp-prince-akhindenor-connived-with-karu-nasarawa-magistrate-court-charges-young-girl-for-criminal-offences-for-refusing-to-marry-him/

Labour Party Crises: Court orders for substituted service on respondents, adjournes till June 30 As Labour Party battles multiple factions, The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday, ordered for substituted service of the originating summons, interlocutory injunctions and other processes on the respondents in a suit filed by Chief Calistus Okafor in which he is praying the court to declare him the authentic National Chairman of the Party. During the sitting, the court presided by Justice I. E. Ekwo granted the request of Chief Okafor and ordered for substituted service on the 1st to 3rd respondents, 6th to 12th respondents, and 14th respondent which include Barrister Julius Abure, Umar Farouk, Barrister Akingbade Oyelakin, Comrade Salisu Mohammed, Comrade Lawson Osagie, Comrade Isa Aremu, Comrade Baba Aye, Comrade Ikpe Etokudo, Comrade Sylvester Ejiofor, Comrade Lucy Offiong and Hajia Salamatu Aliyu. The court further ordered that the service should be effected within seven days of the order and adjourned the case till 30th June for further mention. Speaking on the application for substituted service, Chief Okafor said that the aforementioned respondents have been frustrating various efforts to serve the originating summons, interlocutory injunctions and other processes on them. While maintaining that he remains the party’s authentic National Chairman, he reiterated his belief on the justice system. It should be recalled that former governor of Anambra State Mr. Peter Obi joined Labour Party and registered with a faction of the party in Agulu after he was forcefully retired from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to his failure to gain support of the party’s structures in his home state Anambra and across the country. He was later elected the presidential flag bearer of a faction of the Labour Party. Many observers have described Obi’s preference for Labour Party, a party battling numerous litigations over its leadership as a political miscalculation.

A notorious Lagos Land grabber, Shina Okanlomo A.K.A Alhaji Adeshina Teslim Jelili has warned two Igbo Land Owners to stay away from their properties or get killed. Narrating the disturbing event to newsmen, the Lawyer to the two igbomen, Barrister Bridget Edokwe stated that on 23rd December 2020, while her clients were preparing for their Christmas celebrations, artisans working on their property somewhere near Military Cantonment Ojo Lagos reported to them that one Shina Okanlomo A.K.A Alhaji Adeshina Teslim Jelili, a notorious land grabber invaded their property with tens of armed thugs and attacked them. When her clients went to their property, the bold and confident land grabber told them “ I don’t care how you people got this land or the document you have, but if I see you guys in this property again, I will end you. So if you love your lives, don’t near this area again. This is Lagos and we own this place”. According to the lawyer, Even though her office have forwarded a petition to police Area Command, Area E, FESTAC Town to stop the trespass, breach of peace and threat to life, The Police looked like they are afraid to investigate the case and afraid of the land grabber.“When police finally invited the Land Grabber, He came like a king and they treated him like a royalty.” “Instead of a thorough investigation on my clients’ criminal complaints against the land grabber, Police asked all parties to sign “undertaking to maintain peace”. She said “Notwithstanding the “undertaking to maintain peace”, the Land Grabber went back the the property, erecting structures day and Night and police has refused to do anything….As I am speaking to you now, the Land grabber is fully in my clients’ property erecting structures without any title document to the land.” Barrister Edokwe Lamented. The lawyer decried the fact that Nigeria has become a place where the state looks away while powerful criminal individuals take over other “less powerful people’s” properties without any fear of consequence. The Notorious Land grabber, Shina Okanlomo and three members of his gang was also in February 2020 dragged to Police Force CID, Annex, Ikoyi Lagos for grabbing acres of land belonging to one Mr. Obinna. Members of ITOGBA-ONIKIN Family who sold the land to Mr Obinna told the Police AIG Alagbon that Okanlomo and his gang destroyed Mr Obinna’s properties worth thirty million Naira. “My clients are now living in fear for their lives”, the Lawyer Lamented. https://thelegalpreneur.com.ng/2021/01/05/if-i-see-you-in-your-land-again-i-will-kill-you-lagos-land-grabber-shina-okanlomo-warn-igbo-land-owners/

It is unfortunate. If Elders can refuse to adhere to simple rules but rather resort to illegality is something very unbecoming of Legal practitioners. I hope NBA will settle this Abuja issue once and for all. |
