Uzoho is in a similar predicament. So what do we do?
Uzoho is more tested in the national colors and so will still get a call up. Ezenwa is number 1 goalie at Katsina united now and is getting game time and so is Akpeyi. So we invite all 3 . That is what we will do smiley

I think in the game against Germany, a friendly where Ike Shorunmu sustained an injury to his hand was what caused our problems in France 98. Our goalkeeping problems was glaring but the recall of Rufai was catastrophic. I would have still preferred Abiodun Baruwa to Rufai. However, we preferred an aging Rufai.
Baruwa that made a total mess of himself against Yugoslavia. If we had played 98 AFCON qualfiers and 98 AFCON we would have known early enough that Ike had no deputy

Like we need AFCON to qualify for World Cup.

The point is simple. To give a coach time to build a formidable side, we need tk prepare ourselves to sacrifice a tournament of two. It does not mean we will not qualify or must not qualify but we must put that at the back of our minds.

Compensate those losses with top friendly games but make sure our play improves at an impressive rate.

As long as the quality of the team improves, we time we would see ourselves achieving results.

Relying on just qualifying as the yardstick and sacking those who fail to qualify has gotten us no where. Rohr has qualified but our quality seems dross.
Participating in the 2017 AFCON would have helped our team better.

One of the major set backs for the '98 WC team was not participating in the 1998 AFCON. That was where we would have spotted our lack or quality goal keepers for one.

But this was just 1 tournament and staying out of tournaments for 10 years? Hell no.

It is an inference. We would prefer winning the World Cup in the next ten years if it means giving up qualifying for tournaments.

I am not saying it is an ideal scenario it shows the essence of sacrifice of small gains for big gains.
Thar is tge problem. U cannot be giving up qualfying for tournaments because u want to win the WC. You need those tournaments to build your team towards winning the WC.

Siasia is good but remember that we failed to qualify for 2012 due to Eguavoen inept against Guinea in Conakry.Oiseh left the team when it matter most in 2017 and Siasia took over.Pls give Siasia eagles job from the scratch and see a solid team.

Boss, point of correction,1986 AFCON was hosted by Egypt and i remember we lost to Zambia by 1 nil and drew at home in 1985 and this nailed our participation.
My bad. Egypt hosted and won it in 1986. CIV hosted in 1984.

Yes Siasia took over from Eguavoen from the third game. We were 3pts behind Guinea then. Even going into the last game we were still behind Guinea with 3pts. We earlier lost 1 nil in conakry but Guinea opened scoring in Abuja. And so the permutations were if we win Guinea 2-1 we qualify but not as group leader but as one of the best second placed teams. We win 3-1 we qualify as group winners. At 2-1 we were cruising to the AFCON along with Guinea but Siasia failed to secure what he had first and was trying to get a 3rd. That Guinea equalizer was a swift counter attack. Aiyenugba failed us that day and that was his last game.

An experienced coach would have known how to deal with that kind of situation. Siasia's inexperience was really exposed. He was good as a youth team coach but not as a senior coach. We took a Gamble and it back-fired against us

I used far fetched for you to get the point. It is an inference for you to see that big gain trumps small gains.

That cannot be a gain not to talk of being small or big. You stay away from competitive tournament for 10 years and u suddenly appear at the WC and be dreaming of winning it?

Where has it ever happened?

Look at the countries that have won the WC in the last 30 or 40 years and see how they had performanced in the competitions they took part in 10year period leading to that WC.

I disagree because that is a small gain if in the long run, we are no way from being a quality side.

We need someone who in a stipulated amount of time can build us into a top quality side.

Let me give a far-fetched inference.

Imagine one coach who in ten years will qualify us for all the tournaments but will not win any and our play is dire.

And another who after ten years, fails to qualify us fir any tournament except the World Cup on the tenth year and end up winning the World Cup playing breath taking football.

Who do you think will benefit the country more in the long run?

We need a coach that can keep marching the team to play better and with time win games in breath taking fashion. That is how we get better. Not just looking at he qualified and celebrate it.
If the coach does not qualify for tournaments how best can he build the team naa? Don't Tell me friendlies because teams that qualfy for tournaments are the same ones that play friendlies more.

On the bolded I just dey laugh. Chai TheGoodJoe. So he didn't qualify for any tournament in 10years, while others are busy building their teams with top quality competitive games this ur imaginery coach and his team will be in hiding somewhere taking only drills morning, afternoon and night while their mates are busy with serious tournaments. That is my simple point. Use all the qualifiers, World Cup, AFCON as a continuous march into building a formidable squad. Play with bravery continuously. Sometimes you fall on the way but in the long run, you march towards a better team. In the long run better results.

But restricting goals to qualify for AFCON by any means possible and celebrating it, even though there is no real growth in our play, in the long run, we will see we are still in the same position.

My point is made.
Any coach that cannot qualfy Nigeria for the AFCON deserves to be sacked! We cannot leave the development of the national team in the hands of such incompetent fellow! angry

We build by continuously improving our play with conscious steps. The AFCON is but 7 games if the team gets to the finals. If not 3-6 games. I doubt that is enough to build a formidable side.

It takes the use of every opportunity of the international breaks to keep building. Training and playing in braver fashions. Setting up in systems that will favor the most offensive players in the team. Playing local and foreign friendly games when the opportunity comes. That is when big gains are made. When you look back and see that you are far better than the past.
And AFCON qualfiers are how many games? 6. And out of which maybe only 1 or 2 teams can match ur strength. Is that competitive enough to build a team compared to the AFCON where every game is as competitive as they can get?

Who says u cannot play friendlies if you qualify for AFCON? Infact AFCON qualfication even make a team play more friendlies.

U cannot not say you want to build a team and u would prefer to stay away from the AFCON because u don't want "short gains". Not for a team of Nigeria's status. The AFCON is the very right place to build that team.

That is the problem.

A lot of people jump in with their negative way of understanding the game, forgetting that in the long run, the Super Eagles have claimed down the ladder of great football.

I remember when we were tagged one of the teams in World football that plays good football.

Siasia was building us in the right path but people were so eager for small gains and preferred him to have adopted a negative approach to just secure qualification.

With a long term goal in place and room for growth of the team, he would coach with bravery, set us up offensively and with time, we would regain our status as one of the footballing powerhouses of the game.
You call an AFCON qualification small gain?

How do you even expect to build a team when u cannot qualify for tournaments?

Precisely my point. Short term gains. If not, you cut it off, not setting sights at the bigger picture. It takes a long term growth with the site of a formidable team in future. Rohr has qualified us repeatedly but our play is dire and we will still play in a Conservative manner in coming games.

That is my kick against short term gains. It is not the right approach for the long term.
It was very obvious Siasia was not matured enough for the senior team job.

We gave him some Time and tried him again in 2015. He seemed to have gotten better but still not yet ready.

There was no way we would have continued with an obviously inexperienced coach like Siasia after his performance during the 2012 AFCON qualfiers. Their was no need to be patient with a coach like that.

Onyekuru that could not trap a simple pass against Libya and ended up foiling a beautiful goal bound move. I am yet to see what Henry Onyekuru has to offer that team. Siasia is a brilliant offensive mind but has been denied the time to build a formidable team.
Siasia was in charge for the whole of the 2012 AFCON qualfiers yet his attacking philosophy failed us. Before then the last time I withnessed Nigeria crashing out in an AFCON qualfiers was in 1985 ie qualfiers for the '86 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

I can understand making do with the resources available but in Rohr’s case, he is not. A good example is his fear to utilise the abilities of Aina and Ebuehi. He will resort to using Shehu in tough games because he lacks the ability to set up the team in an offensive manner. His selection is mostly towards a Conservative set up. Even when he is attacking, his foot is on the breaks. We are just sailing by but we are not growing into a formidable side. This is due to us not working towards it.
The WC games that Aina played how did he fair? He didn't even show enough to displace Echiejile.

As for Ebuehi, Abdullahi Shehu at that time of the Qualifiers was having a form of his life. Rohr needed a very strong RB that could cope with the physicality of the Cameroonians. That aside you dont throw in a Newbie into a very crucial game of that calibre.

Finally you don't change a winning team. That is a vital philosophy of coaching and this is more prevailent for the national teams.

You ended it with an attack.

Simple, There are a lot of quality coaches who would not handle the Super Eagles in such Conservative manner. We have been down this route for so long but still, after many months, we tuck our tails and played the South Africans with so much fear.

I guess the offensive coaches who have built their careers playing offensively lack coaching ideas.

I am saying Rohr lacks the creative idea to build a formidable team that will make us challenge for top honours.

I can bet if Siasia was in the helm of affairs of this team for this long, we would be playing in much braver fashion and delivering better results.

I feel like puking when I watch us play and I am not exaggerating.
grin

I was even expecting a Zidane or Pep.

Siasia that couldn't manage a 2-1 lead against Guinea. A lead that would have been enough for us to qualify instead he was gunning for a compressive 3-1 win and he left the back open and bang Guinea equalized.

Siasia that couldn't maintain a 1-0 lead against Egypt in Abuja. I can see he attacked and won the return fixture in Alexandria.

I can bet u Siasia has learned his lessons and would not coach like that again.

And again who are the creative players that Rohr dropped from the team?

It takes time, patience and working towards a path to achieve greatness. We should be working towards developing an energetic, intensive and offensive means to give us the ability to blow off even tough oppositions.

Not for us to be patient working on a strategy that will tow us down the wrong course.

If we continue down this path, five years from now, we will still be parking bus hoping to win South Africa or draw to qualify.
Show me a coach that doesn't adopt those things in bold.

All these things you are saying are just theories. Come down to reality on ground abeg.

A coach can only make do with the resources he has. U want to be like Spain or Brazil when u don't have their kind if quality. If you like drill your team everyday for 1 year they can only give what they have. Why do you think clubs go buy ready made players? Can u buy players like that for the national teams? You make best use of your own quality or lack of it. That's all.

We seek small gains by making conscious efforts to stay defensive to win a game. Instead of working towards achieving a formula that will make us one of the top teams in the World. We decide to drop creative players that will boost our play in the long run for players who offer more defensively that will help us seek a small win.

We are not in any way working towards a formidable side with a short term Conservative strategy.
U think this is ManCity?

You think coaches like being on the defensive end?

Show me the home game where Rohr went consciously defensive? The away game that we Defended our result were against Cameroon and SA. You think Cameroon and SA will be the ones Defending when the result was not in their favor? They were expected to come all out and attack and then Rohr would have to protect what he had. It is typical for losing teams to always be on the offensive. This is a no brainer.

Please drop all this text book tactics and go for a real coaching certificate.

And please who are the creative players that were dropped from the team?

If Rohr gets praises for managing the situation, I can understand.

However, we are in no way matching towards building another great sides as we had in the past. These things do not just fall into place. It takes time and consistency to build a formidable team.

With our continuous approach of seeking small gains, we are ending up throwing away a formidable future we would have had if we worked towards it.

As for me, I am more into building in long term gains than celebrating qualification. There was a time we could beat our chest that we can give the best sides in the game a run for their money. We would not only match up to top teams but try to outplay them in every quarter of the game. A good example is our game against Spain in France 98. When Bora was asked if he was scared of the Spanish team by Sam Atasia Oburu, his reply was, "Spain should be scared of us."

We were in the group of death but played with bravery in every game.

Today we celebrate tucking our tails in between our legs to qualify. These are short term gains and we are not in any way building a solid team that will have the capability of matching against some of the top teams of the World and giving them a run for their money. We can only maintain a timid fashion if we continue towing in this path.
Yes I agree we have to build for the long term nobody is saying other-wise.You cited the case of Bora and the 98 team but the simple truth is we are no longer that force that we used to be. We don't have that kind of quality any more. The current team cannot even match the team of the 2000s in terms of quality talkless of that of the 90s.

Rohr was in a group of death enroute qualification for the 2018 WC but we qualfied with a game to spare. Not even a deduction of 3 points caused by some hopeless NFF officials could deny us a place.

For the 2019 AFCON qualifiers Rohr started by losing 2-0 at home. A result that completely made him fall back to his own self of not yielding to calls of inclusion of new players here and there. But look at Rohr qualifying from that group with one game to spare!

We only narrowly missed out in qualifying from a WC group that had a finalist in Croatia and our Perennial beaters Argentina. If that chance that fell to Ighalo had fallen to any other player like Musa or even Iheanacho we will most likely be saying something else today.

See, nobody doesn't like when your team is always on the offensive. But that will be determined by the quality of your side and also the quality of opposition and also u knowing when to come all out and when to go offensive. Rohr needed to come all out when we needed it. You saw how we knew we needed to beat Cameroon at home and we won 4-0 same thing with Libya.
Rohr is going to Face The Seychelles next u cannot expect him to be conservative in a game like that.

So Bros just chill and give Rohr some kudos man.....

I am glad you have commented from an unbiased angle. I love that.

That Rohr factor is what they have denied or tried to water down.

According to thegoodjoe,

"Rohr is getting more praise than he deserves"

That sounds like a travesty.

Because we all know our story before Rohr came in.

They have even gone ahead and criticized his style of game.

They said Libya and SA shit on us grin

These to me are arguments I cannot leave to fly without countering.

Rohr so far has one of the best records qualifying us for the WC and AFCON.

Today we can boast of beating top African teams by margins of 3-0 or 4-0. Just a while back many of us would not dream of this.

I am one of the ardent supporters of Rohr's conservative approaches I.e vs SA.

We have seen adventurous coaches I.e Siasia throw away qualifications (2012) because they do not know how to be conservative when necessary.

Rohr's conservative approach has built us into a massive defensive machine. One of our problems in recent past. Rohr's team even work on defending set pieces.

I dare way we are on the right track with Rohr and the team he is building will be a tough but to crack come 2022.

Glory 2022! WC on an African soil, Nigeria! grin
Well, I seem to have found a co-apostle of Rohr's conservatism.

Believe it or not, it is this Rohr's conservative approach which also reflects on his players selection and game management that have earned us easy qualifications. A coach is supposed to know when to come all out and also when to go conservative. Of all our Indegenous coaches the one closest to Rohr in terms of approach was late Amodu Shuaibu. Amodu's game plan was "even if u don't win don't lose". He twice qualified Nigeria for the WC from very pittyful positions.

Rohr may not be much gifted tactically but still he has been able to achieve results mostly through man management and also game management. I have once clamored for the NFF to employ a tactician as they did for Westerhof. And I will still clamor for it again.

As per the 2022WC I don't want to stick out my neck yet as per expectations. I would like to see this team play in this year's AFCON first. And then the WC qualifiers before the 2021 AFCON and so on. I so much pray for the Success of our 2019 U20 and 2020 Olympics teams. They are part of the players that we will be looking up to come 2022.
