Subzero047: I just heard Shehu Abdullahi is next in line for the Captaincy
This country is a joke Shehu has been an old member of the team starting from the 2014 CHAN team. But I wonder why Kenneth Omeruo has never been considered, considering he is about the oldest Member of that team, alongside Musa. |

This team has totally lost it's identity. They now play kick and follow hoping for something to happen.
Creativity was very poor to say the least. Coaches shouting at the players as if they are cadet players. Always so in a haste and end up with the wrong decisions at the final third. This team should be getting better with time but it has become the other way round.
This is not the Nigerian National Team I used to know. |

JohnBullMySon: Rohr should've allowed Onuachu a bit longer on that pitch. There might have been a goal. That no 10 na wahala oh. Iheanacho should rest for Iwobi to move in there next game. Even if Onuachu had played 120 minutes he still would not have scored with the set up we had tonight. |

TheSuperNerd: We clearly were the better side. And that is what makes it annoying. We didn't translate our better plays and chances to goals. 13 shots vs 3 shots (6 on target vs 1 on target and 2 big chances missed).
I mean, we would be talking a win had Onuachu and Simon buried their Big Chances. But the team created lots of chances and that is a positive in itself. I was also impressed with Awaziem on the left side of central defence. Hardly put a foot wrong.
But Dad ehn, I wanna ask, why do we always lose whenever we pair Ekong and Awaziem at CB? This is their third loss together as a CB pair in their third game as a CB pair.
Nevertheless shaaa, I feel they did much better this time. Had our forwards converted their chances, we won't be talking a loss.
The team had many good interplays in the second half most especially overlapping with when Iwobi also moved more centrally but the Cameroonian defence stood strong and we didn't apply the finishing touch of lethality.
I hope they are better on Tuesday. And by better, I mean scoring goals. On losing whenever Ekong pairs up with Awaziem , I see that as more of a coincidence. Even if Ekong had paired up with Balogun tonight, Anguisa could still have scored that goal. |

He was invisible all through.....even Yinka had a better game Haba! When was Musa Introduced? We had the better of the chances earlier in the game that we could have converted. Simon had the biggest chance to draw the game level but he instead went for power rather than placement. |

TheSuperNerd: Cameroon scored with their only shot on target. Three shots with only one on target and it was a goal.
Our lads had 6 shots on target!!! 6!!!! 13 shots overall (two of which were big chances ballooned skywards in each half) and we could not bag one.
Anyway, we wait for the second leg on Tuesday.
Congrats to Terem Moffi, Valentine Ozornwafor and Marcus Abraham who made their Senior debuts today. For me, despite the loss, I will still take a lot of positives from this game. We were the better team. |

A player in the caliber of Osimhen could have made a difference.
Again it has been proven that our wingers are overated.
The team needs another play maker in the midfield, asides Aribo.
Iwobi has not improved one bit. |

TheSuperNerd: You are quite right about the Four Recognised defenders. - William Troost Ekong - Chidozie Awaziem - Jamilu Collins - Valentine Ozornwafor
But our backline on Friday could look like this:
LB - Jamilu Collins
CB - Chidozie Awaziem CB - William Troost Ekong (Cpt)
RB - Shehu Abdullahi.
Shehu could very well start at RB as he has always played there under Rohr and also played there a good number of times for his club in the just concluded season where he also emerged League Champion as a super regular at RB and DM.
I think this backline should hold their own with Ndidi shielding them also.
Our midfield will have Ndidi-Etebo-Iwobi depending on our starting formation. That was the midfield three that won Bronze at the last Afcon and defeated the Cameroonians the last time.
18 players including just 15 outfield players (meaning we can make just 4 subs) is quite a small number but I think we got the players that can just do enough to compete despite the withdrawals. In this Super Eagles squad, there are just about 2 or 3 players that we can say we will miss if they don't make the squad. We still don't have a sure starting 11. I still believe the sqaud on ground has what it takes to do the job against Cameroon. |

drDoom3: Our main problem in this list is defence. We only have like four recognized defenders there, and only Ekong and Awaziem are decently recognizable at the top level. We might ship in plenty goals with our backline. That defense is still complete: Shehu (RB), Ekong (CB), Awaziem (CB), Collins (LB). Valentine as sub. Ndidi also has the capability of a CB if the need arises. |

Now that the season has finally come to an end, realistically, who do you guys think will be nominated for African Player of the Year?
My picks are:
Edouard Mendy Mohammed Salah Riyad Mahrez
As the clear favorites,
And:
Kelechi Iheanacho Sadio Mane/Paul Onuachu/ Samuel Chukwueze
As outsiders
Who do y'all have?
Cc: thesupernerd, anfrewbaba444, terzurum, icon4s, elyte89 A good list. But I doubt a goal keeper will take top three |

Kog45: Happy weekend guys, really elated reading individuals comments on Rohr list and really surprised to see conclusion of the majority that Rohr is not in charge...i remember it was on this thread someone like Kokmne and forgiveness always saying Rohr is not fully in charge when it comes to player invitation.
Really no one ever ask question on how Marcus Abraham made the team. This guy was ex Remo fc player before joined Fareinse who have a Nigerian Kunle Soname has largest shareholder, the same Kunle owned Fc Remo and he was one of those that influenced appointment of Rohr as eagles coach...am saying this that some players got invitation based on their network and it is left for them to convince the coach....Maduka Okoye got his invitation as division three player based on strong recommendation of Darlington Omodiagbe and it paid well...Chiedebere Nwakili got his invitation based on his brother who is an agent but he couldn't measured up....it should be noted that no coach played with his job, invitee does not guarantee that a player made the squad.
But the big question is why inviting mediocre player at the expense of performing player.I don't see any reason for inviting Ezenwa,Ahmed Musa, Shehu Abdullahi and rookie like Marcus when we have Nwakili and Nwobodo who are doing well this season.I don't think anyone has ever mentioned Abraham Marcus on this thread.
Nigeria is a country that is totally different from any country in the world, various interests that must be respected but it should not be applied to sports like football cos you must present your best to be champion.
It is only Rohr that can answer any questions arising from his team list or how a player made his team...blaming NFF when coach didn't speak up is uncalled for.He should just come out and say it out and trust Nigerians he would be fully supported. Good write up. But the reality is that there would always be one player that would be snuggled into a squad through one means or the other. Not that I am condoning this, but I am reminding you that it has always been the case . Some times it pays-off, that is if the player turns up with a good performance but often times, such players don't turn up well. I remember it was Joseph Yobo that brought in a certain unknown Abbey George into the Team. And he turned out to be a great RB player for the team. Victor Osimhen was recommended to Emma Amuneke by Tijani Babangida. See where Osimhen is today. Again, I am not condoning such, especially in the national team where players should be invited on merit; but the thing is no be today. And it also happens in different teams across the world. Let the Marcus come and prove himself, abi na? After all, it is a friendly encounter. |

One of my all time favorite Nigerian footballers. We knew back then about the gang up which even started during the 1994 WC qualifiers. One of the most obvious was in the game against Ivory Coast in Abidjan, when Yekini found space to score and make it 2:2 but Samson Siasia, who was had the ball and needed to lay a simple pass to Yekini, just decided to shoot from a tight angle and that chance went away. Yekini was seen shouting Siasia's name and begging for the pass, like the way Iheanacho did for Musa against Iceland in the last world cup |

Kog45: 7Andrew thank you for saying this out. Please where is goldfish80,michael2,icon79,mujtahida,safarigirl and few others who I cannot remember their monikers.. .these are iconic analyser of the game with no sentiment..respect to thegoodjoe,TheSuperNerd,icon4s,chrisloog,jiday, BascoVanVelli and others for always giving us undiluted comprehensive report on the performance of our players.
I think it is better to come out openly just like my good friend forgiveness who is ready to pour it out irrespective of criticisms ditto Kokmne who believe so much in his Nigerian British born players,..Chriskel is a known great admirer of Senegal and Cote'd Voire team and your humble self who is an apology of Spanish league.
I know TheSuperNerd want to hear my view cos I remember when he said Oga Kog must comment on Aina and these are the reasons I always voice my mind out.How on earth will someone always find fault in a player just cos you love the other player which is acceptable...those accusing forgiveness of +++++are worse than him but they cannot come out for fear of verbal onslaughts from members here.
I don't want to compare Ebuehi and Aina but I need to dig out some facts.
Aina statistics in the last eight matches this season
**Chelsea==6.52 *Arsenal==6.39 Wolves==6.85 Leeds==5.94 **Man city=6.09 **Liverpool =6.71 **Tottenham =7.02 Crystal palace =6.58
**represent strong team and he had above 6.5 against three strong epl team.
Highest rating=7.02 Lowest rating=5.94
Aina as Centre back..played 14 matches=6.53 Aina as Right back.. played 10 matches=6.82 Aina as Left back..played 6 matches=6.66
He has scored two goals with one assist and won epl best goal of the month award which stand a chance for best goal of the season.
But funny enough here some just want to run the player down just for a love for another player...Good criticism is acceptable but not myopic one with total hatred.
I have said it based on last two super eagles matches I will pick Ebuehi over Aina but Ebuehi far better, not acceptable to me.
Though a faceless forum but some built this thread to what it is today based on good analysis of the game that made a lot to peep here to get fact. Please let us always be factual and our criticism should tell us that we are a great watcher of the game just like thegoodjoe.
Special shout out to smartmith and pogbae for continuing with what this thread stand for.I enjoy you guys. Egbon... Trust you are good. Well, thanks for bringing me into this discussion. Firstly, I will say Rohr has really done well in giving us a team with squad depth. Almost every Position in that team now is competitive. Until recently, the last time we had a "real" Right back was Chidi Odiah. We had always played make-shift RBs. Likes of Ambrose, Balogun, Omeruo, and Shehu have taken turns to fill up that Position in the more recent past. But today Ebuehi and Aina have emerged. Two awesome modern RBs in my opinion. For me, not much to separate between them, however, Aina's versatility, being able to fit in into the LB Position is a plus for him. Like I will always mention, in the modern day games, players that are more versatile will always have the upper hand in making squads for tournaments. |

Iheanacho instead can play as an SS on behind the striker. Osimhen's pace, height, and power strikes is very suitable for national football. He's also got good Positioning too. jihday: Okocha was a pointless dribbler pre-98 not until 2000 Afcon that we started seeing end product and by the time the whole world would notice he was already clocking in on 30 years of age What do you mean by pointless dribbler. Go back and watch Okocha, he usually completed over 95% of his passes after those dribbles, and made incredible assists. He was never a quiet kind of player, you can never mark him out, usually involved in build up of Play. As at that time, that was what being a "number 10" was about. That is Possession of great skills, being creative and also being able to distribute the ball from the midfield to the winger or attackers. Football has evolved and the system has become more efficient but you cannot write of J.J Okocha's Contribution to the game. Even the great Ronaldinho mentioned he learnt the act of dribbling from Okocha. |
