The Nigeria of today, what matters more is ur graduating grade and your ability to easily switch over to any career you find an opportunity in.
A good number of Engineers/Scientists are working as Accountants/Tax consultants in Accounting/Auditing firms. Many Biochemists, Zoologist, Vet doctors and co are in the banking/ Telecom/IT sectors. I know people who read Microbiology, Biochemistry and Agric related courses in the Oil and Gas sector today.
My former MD who runs one of the most respected Petroleum Geology servicing companies in Nigeria had a first degree in Zoology!
What determines more the career you'll pursue is the working environment you'll find your self and ur ability to acquire numerous skills to be able to compete with different professionals.
I read Geology but my first working experience was in a bank. |

goldfish80: You have finally seen the light I remember we were at opposite sides durring th debate on Iheanacho's best position for the super eagles. Truth is that iheanacho is at his element when he plays off a striker. I see him more as a player who connects the midfield to the attack and with his skill set, he can score tonnes of goals from this position. The thing is Mancity have a couple of fantastic wingers and attacking midfielders. So the only way they can really utilise Iheanacho is to play him as a SS or CF. Reverse is the case in the Super Eagles. We dnt have quality AM (the number 10). We have fairly descent strikers. If Iheanacho plays as a striker, who plays the number 10 role? Though Iwobi too can play as a 10 bt he has in more recent times been more effective from the wings. Iheanacho has always been an AM / RWF. It is TheGoodJoe and his City coaches they see him as a striker. |

It seems they still don't trust Iheanacho. They were being stingy with their passes to him Iwobi is a master class. So very unselfish player. He is straight out from Arsene Wenger's bakery. This is a kind of player Wenger likes. As for Iheanacho some times he gets missing in the game. His ability to score goals from almost nothing usually stands him out. I like the role he plays for Nigeria, though once felt he should be a topping 9. I think we need him more as a number 10. Victor Moses also had a good game. The way he was running today one would wonder if he was same player that was excused from the Zambia game dat took place only 6 days ago. I hope makes the Algeria game. |

VERY IMPRESSIVE INTERVIEW BY ROHR, MANY OF THE ISSUES RAISED ON THIS THREAD WERE ADDRESSED. talks about the RB and LB position, talks about how Musa Muhammad could not measure up in training, talks about Enyeama rejoining if we qualify for the WC..
Congratulations coach, it's two wins from two games for you as Super Eagles coach. What is the feeling like?
Rohr: I feel great starting my job as coach of the Super Eagles on a good note, winning two competitive games. The recent win in Zambia gives me the feeling that we are up to something great. It is nice to work with the players and officials of the team. The Nigeria Football Federation has also made my stay so far wonderful. I am enjoying my stay here now
After Zambia comes Algeria next month. How much do you know about the Algerians?
We know them very well because most of the players have been educated in France, played in France, come from the French academy. Some of them played for French junior teams before changing to playing for the Algerian national team. I have seen them play live and I know their setup. Of course, I know the players.
We will know more of the way they played against Cameroon when the video clips and reports get to us. I sent someone to watch the game and I await the details from him. I have also seen the match on television. We shall do an analysis of the video when we get it and then take it from there and we will know much more about them.
Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani are the Algerian team's star men. Will you pay special attention to the two?
There are big players and star men everywhere. In Zambia, we have Kalaba, Mbesuma and others. Perhaps these ones are at a higher level, we know that it will be very difficult to beat the Algerians, but we have confidence now and will be ready for them. We shall not pay special attention to Mahrez or Slimani. Now our team has high spirit and confidence. Collectively, we are not afraid of the Algerian team.
How did you restore the confidence and the feel good spirit in the Super Eagles?
There is no magic about that. I am a positive man and I know the talents are there in Nigeria. They need fatherly guidance to get going. They responded well to invitation to camp and their attitude has been wonderful. There were lots of communication between us and I demanded discipline on and off the field from them. Good ambience and work ethic have also helped in restoring confidence back in the team.
They made sacrifices for one week prior to the game in Zambia. They did not go out, did not see their families, they only worked. I kept them busy after training with videos and meetings. The spirit was good and we took it to Zambia and won. So they know the reward for hard work now, and we hope to continue to improve from there.
Is this spirit of the team good enough to see the Super Eagles grabbing the World Cup ticket ahead of Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia?
Yes, my players want to have the World Cup ticket. The ticket will be difficult, but everybody knows that we have the capacity to come first out of this group, but you know it requires a lot of hard work. We have already three points, I'm sure with 12 points we could be the team coming out of this group. We shall work very, very hard to ensure that we win all three of our home matches to get 12 points.
After the first game, we are on top, and we can say Cameroon did well to get a draw in Algeria and now it is in our hands to beat the Algerians in Uyo. I know that it will be difficult because they also don't want to lose in Uyo. But we want, absolutely, to win this game and remain on top of the group
Should Nigerians expect new players in the Super Eagles for the game against Algeria next month?
Yes, because all the injured players will be ready, you know who the players are. Four of them who missed the Zambian game will return, one of them had family problem, he will come back. There will be some changes and perhaps the local players will be handicapped because they will be on holidays and will find it difficult to have a rhythm. They don't train and they don't play at this period. It will be difficult for local players, but we shall see if we can organise something, may be a training for them to remain in shape. I don't know if I will open camp for them, but it will be pretty difficult for them to meet up now that they are on break.
Does that mean that the overseas-based players who do not play regular football in their respective clubs will not be invited?
It is good for players to play regular football in their respective clubs to keep in shape and have rhythm. The home-based might come to camp first for us to see how they cope before those abroad join. But I might have a few exceptions in inviting players who don't play regularly for their clubs. So I will need players who play every week for their clubs.
That is why Musa Mohammed who had not played even one minute football since after the Tanzania game was benched because he could not measure up and Mikel also has not played for Chelsea trained well and he gave me a good 90 minutes in Zambia. He did well, so he might return for Algeria on November 12. But they must all go and play games in their clubs. I have told them to go and fight for places in their respective clubs.
How will you monitor these players? Will you visit them in Europe?
Of course, we will go to see the players in their clubs, either me or my scouts. So we know who is playing and those who are not playing. The fittest players who prove themselves in their clubs will get invited.
What is your impression of Carl Ikeme's performance against Zambia in Ndola and so far under you as Nigeria coach?
I've known him before now. I have seen him in his club, Wolverhampton Wanderers a second division side in England. I like his approach to the game, his concentration, calmness, attitude to training and games. He is a good goalkeeper and I must commend him for his saves in Ndola. Carl kept us in the game by pulling at least three great saves. He was the man of the match against Zambia. Great guy.
With Carl's performance in goal, do the Super Eagles still need Vincent Enyeama?
Yes, I said it that I wanted Vincent Enyeama to return from retirement and I called him and we spoke with him. He will come back if we qualify for the World Cup. We need very good goalkeepers in the Eagles. We have two local goalkeepers whom I don't know if they will fit in if Carl sustains an injury, so I think we need two big goalkeepers. Of course for this moment, Carl is number one. We cannot change him, he will be number one for the next game.
Is the Super Eagles defence the weak link of your team?
Everybody knew before I arrived here that we need to build a new defence, and unfortunately there were injuries and we had to do two changes in that area of the team. In the game against Tanzania, we had a good defence; we did not concede a goal, they prevented them from scoring.
Leon Balogun got injured playing for his club and Mohammed Musa did not play at all for his club and that was why we made a change and brought in another player. Now we will watch some positions, we will watch what happen at right-back and left-back. We have a strong central defence, so no problem. We shall try and see if the same players will do well in their clubs to come back or we look for new ones.
Ahmed Musa came in as a late substitute in Zambia. Was it your strategy or he was not fit?
Ahmed Musa has not played for Leicester in their last few matches and so we had to watch his sharpness and decided to bring him in the last 20 minutes when Moses Simon was getting tired. That was what we did and he brought in a lot of speed and motivation. He also had one good shot at goal. I hope he will start playing again in Leicester because when he plays there, he can be able to start the next game for us.
Are Iwobi, Iheanacho and Mikel the most important players of your team?
Of course, you have seen what happened. They have scored, they played well, they are young players. I mean Kelechi and Iwobi are very young players who are driven by an experienced player in Mikel.
Our kind of playing is good football, the passing game. Technical football, not so many touches, we like to play directly, collectively bringing in the wings and the full-backs coming forward. They played accordingly in Ndola and I appreciated them very much. We shall try and get better with our style. It is too early to say if I would build the team around these three players.
You have bonded well with your players and home officials. But were you aware that one of the local coaches has yet to get a contract?
We have a strong bond as a team and we work hard to get results. We relate as a family, we try to be friends with the players and officials, and we respect each other. The assistants I brought in know we have to work closely with the Nigerian officials, likewise the other coaches, medical team, coordinator, media man and equipment manager. We did not come here to lecture but to help them grow and get the results for our team. We are one happy family, I am satisfied with the co-operation I am getting from everyone.
On the contract of the Nigerian coach, I want to tell you that the federation president and I went to some places on Tuesday and what I got was positive. I have been assured that in the next few days Salisu Yusuf will sign his contract as chief coach of the Eagles and he would be paid his wages like us. The federation and the minister now have a strong solidarity and this is good for the team to succeed.
My joy now is that the minister and the federation are now working together for good and we need their solidarity to be able to go to the World Cup in Russia. A big country like Nigeria need all the political will and government's strong support to succeed because the talents are there to go to any length.
Can you confirm that the NFF has paid the Super Eagles bonuses and allowances?
Yes, the federation has paid the bonuses for the Tanzania game, including other allowances, as well as other outstandingly dues to the players and officials. They have also assured us that the bonus for the away victory against Zambia will be paid before the next game. We are okay with the federation and we appreciate the efforts of the president.
Do you feel disappointed that Nigeria will not be at the 2017 AFCON in Gabon?
I feel bad but the Super Eagles have been eliminated and there is nothing I can do about it but to focus on the World Cup. We have forgotten about it, but we have the possibility to watch Algeria and Cameroon to know what they do and how they play. We shall also use the period of AFCON to see other players, those we have not seen. You cannot use two games to see everybody. We must always be positive in every negative because in each negative there is the positive side.
After next month's game, the Super Eagles' next match will be in August 2017. What will the team be doing before then?
We look at the FIFA window and try to exploit it to play as many friendly games as possible. We talk to some notable countries in and outside Africa to prepare the Eagles. March and June give us the opportunity that will see the Eagles in action during the FIFA windows.
Your final word to Nigerians….
I want to say a big thank you to Nigerians, especially the Uyo fans, for the warm welcome and support they gave me in the game against Tanzania. I am happy to be working in Nigeria now and I feel like I am already a Nigerian. I hope that when we go back to Uyo, the pitch will be better than the last time and we need the supporters to be the 12th man to beat Algeria. We have to have our people behind us for 90 minutes of the game. We have to cheer our players whether good or bad and make things difficult for the Algerians
Read more at http://www.completesportsnigeria.com/rohr-%e2%80%8e-need-uyo-fans-12th-player-nigeria-algeria/#IHL70KVfXlA4tRcV.99 A very impressive interview. Now that the national team seems to be more attractive, it is an opportunity to pouch on Nigerian players with dual citizenship. However, there should be fairness in the assesment of these players. We need the best. I learnt Rohr has volunteered to support the female national team coaches. He should just leave them and focus on scouting Nigerian players in Europe. We need to shop for a RB and LB. The coaches should just do the needful. I learnt Ikechukwu Ezenwa, the only "surviving" product of the 2009 Flying Eagles, has landed an Athletico Madrid deal. Good for him and for Nigeria. Goal keepers get better with age. So at 27 he has not hit his summit. I dnt buy the idea of calling back enyeama if we make it to the World Cup cos we have trusted gloves in the team. Carl Ikeme has made us not to miss Enyeama. The future is bright for this team but it is not time to celebrate yet. "We are not there yet" Our next game is key. |

terzurum5: REVEALED: The Nickname Super Eagles Players Privately Call Gernot Rohr Players of the Super Eagles of Nigeria have given the German coach of the team Gernot Rohr, a new nickname which they call him only when they are speaking to each other.
One of the player, who spoke with Owngoalnigeria.com said, they resorted to giving the former coach of Mali, a nickname to clearly differentiate him from other coaches during discussions.
Rohr who has been widely praised by the players for his man management skills, has rejuvenated the spirit of players of the Super Eagles, which has helped them win their first two games under his guidance.
We gathered the players have resorted to calling him “Baba”, a name which most people call their father in Nigeria or anybody in authority or advanced in age.
”We call him coach to his face, like every other coach but behind, we mostly refer to him as “Baba” (laughs), he is the eldest among the coaches and also to us the players, a fatherly figure” He told Owngoalnigeria.com.

Kog45: Thank u my guy for your good analytical comment.Esiti and Ndidi over Onazi!i laugh, this is world cup qualifiers where there must be no room for gambling. The last match against Zambia,Rohr gambled with RB and he was nearly paid for it.Please for now it's Mikel and Onazi combo except we find a highly rated midfied player talented like iwobi and iheanacho not all these Esiti or Ndidi.
I heard somebody saying Mikel should be dropped for lack of playing time at Chelsea, well if there is replacement why not but for now where is d replacement.
I watched Zambia match again and realized that only Mikel knows how to possess ball and this gave us fluidity in d game, pls watch d 2nd goal by iheanacho and look at d combination of Mikel, iwobi and iheanacho during d match, then it w remind u of xavi, iniesta and messi of old barca.
I see nothing wrong with the last squad except our RB(Ndidi)LB(echiejele) and our right sided midfield (Simon Moses)
It is now left for Rohr to adjust and good we have capable replacement from d squad with availability of Balogun, Omeruo can shift to RB and Victor moses replaces simon but LB is an issue which to me Echiejele is a suspect but for now no capable replacement,Amuzie that i watched in Olympics cannot displace Echijele.Nevertheless this team is going places. Thank u. I jst tire. That has been our problems in recent past. Too many changes. This upsets the balance of the team. Keshi, Oliseh and Siasia have done a lot of experiments. Rohr should jst hit d ground running with d results of the experiment. Thank God coach salisu was part of those experiments. He would jst relay the results to Rohr. I blieve Coach salisu has been making so much inputs in the team selections. After the Algeria game, Rohr cam then perform his own wild experiments. Bt i suggest that for d last two friendlies before d Cameroun double header we should field close to our best squad for team cohesion. Remember Cameroun and Algeria would be at d AFCON. That will aid cohesion for their teams So we also need our best crop to play a couple of games together |

Mickael2: exactly. You got my points totally. I will go with Omeruo as the RB and I won't be worried about Guediora at all. But Mahrez and Echejile, Lord Have Mercy! The simple truth is that Echejile has zero chance against an in-form Mahrez, even against a half-fit Mahrez so if Iwobi doesn't come back to defend then no matter our combination in midfield we will definetly have issues.
Ndidi or Esiti will start for me, because their passing abilities are better than Onazi and they can still cover a lot more ground than he does. In such a match, you don't need your DMF to be losing the ball every now and again or getting caught out of position, it will be dangerous hence the need for a more discplined DMF. If Mikel does not play any game till november, then he should not start at all for me. We have options.
I agree with SirIcon on other points though, except Onazi, he wants him to start just because of the team 'chemistry' "Team Chemistry". Very very important in modern day football. Except if Onazi is injured there is no way Esiti or Ndidi will start that game ahead of him in the DMF position. And I dare to tell u that Mikel will be part of that Algeria game irrespective of whether he plays till November or not. How many games has Mikel played this season yet he was our engine room against Tanzania and Zambia. And pls which option(s) did u say u have for Mikel? |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Icon4s(m): 11:17am On Oct 13, 2016 |
Mickael2: Stability? What stability? They have only played 3 matches together and Onazi didn't start all those games neither did Mikel finish all of them, so we don't have a stable team yet.
Thank God you pointed it out, 'we need to prevent the balls from getting to Mahrez and Brahimi actually, Slimani is the top striker not a winger over there, you watched our last match, was Onazi able to do this? No. Then why shouldn't we be dynamic? Onazi can play games against Zambia and teams like that who depend on sheer strength to get through your midfield, he could also play that Algeria game if only we had great fullbacks, but the truth is that we don't, hence we can't afford to create one-on-one situations between our fullbacks and their wingers, if Omeruo plays as a RB, I will fancy him to hold his ground against Brahimi, but the problem is with Echejile and Mahrez.
So our team is still coming together, it isn't the finished article yet so we can change. Incase you don't remember, we could have lost that game against the Zambians if only they could finish better and all their chances were created from their wingers, none went through the middle so you see that we need to cover our flanks else the Algerians won't be too merciful Mikel and Onazi have been playing that midfield together for over 4 years not jst the last 2 matches. Take note of that. There collaboration all these years has mostly been solid. That is the stability i am talking about. Coaches come and coaches go but the team remains. Onazi is a big game player. We cannot field an inexperienced Esiti in a game of this magnitude. As for u saying Onazi allowed so many passes pass through him against Zambia. Him dey carry net dey play ball? U expect the Zambians not to have any through pass to their forwards at all? Did u also not see the number of interceptions he made in that game? Did u nt see how many times he initiated a build up play? Onazi had a good game against Zambia. Well, Rohr is here to change many things about our national team. "The experienced players are needed for the big games". You think this is like the era of our local coaches where after u build experience in a team, they distroy it by including players to suit there personal interest dropping the more experienced players. Just like Oliseh fielding Paul Onobi ahead of Mikel. And Silvester Igboun over Sonne Aluko. Who be Esiti where Onazi dey? |

I know u didnt make that intial ascertion from those youtube videos but from the 10mins he played against Zambia. Onazi is the man for the DMF job against Algeria abeg. We dnt want any1 that will play with a butter-fly stomach. |

People have been making suggestions like: starting Onazi at LB or RB, starting V. Moses at the left wing so as to provide xover for Echiejile Some1 has also said we should start Esiti ahead of Onazi.
All these are attempts to unsettle the balance and stability in that team.
We forget the first line of defense is the midfield. If u unsettle the midfield bc of LB u have destabilized the whole team. More like cutting off the head to deal with a running nose.
Let Echiejile remain at LB and Onazi partner with Mikel at the midfield. If the midfielders prevent the balls from getting to Mahrez and Slimani their threats would be minimized.
Moses needs to do more to support the RB also Iwobi needs to support the LB. Iwobi's defensive capabilities and physicality especially as seen at Arsenal has improved.
The strenght of this team lies in our midfield and attack. Let us not destabilize it bc we want to replace Echiejile. |

Mickael2: Onazi last played as a RB 3 years ago, this is 2016 incase the date in your phone isn't correct. And with the kind of misplaced passes he recorded against Zambia, we are going to concede from his poor passes. A defensive midfielder only needs to be able to chase the ball, but a RB needs to be able to pass well and sadly Onazi isn't up for that.
Yes, Taye Taiwo plays competitive football and guess what? Echejile doesn't. He is a bench warmer for Standard Liege which is in which country anyways? Taiwo plays for Kemi Passa or so in the finnish league and is their top scorer, with Taiwo we get two things, a left back and a dead ball specialist. So yes Taiwo is still a better option than Echejile atleast and I have never mentioned Amuzie anyways.
Yes, we can both agree on your last point. For me, Esiti starts ahead of Onazi. The Algerians are going to approach the game technically unlike the Zambians that came with physical strength and that suited Onazi's game. The Algerians will work with passes, not direct runs and it requires a midfielder who can position himself well, Onazi can't do this, he relies more on his pace and ability to chase down opponents, Mikel can do it well but our coach won't want to play him there so for me, Esiti is okay. He has long legs which he can extend to intercept passes and his passing range is okay On what grounds are u picking Esiti ahead of Onazi? He has long legs which he can extend to intercept passes? Bros abeg no let me |

AIG07: Who is best to fill d LB n RB are our present concern.
It won't be advisable to start Echiejile from d left. 1. He lacks d pace to cope against d algerians which might want to explore that side with longballs(e.g 2nd half vs. Zambia). 2. He is easily caught out of position. 3. Iwobi can't track back to defend well. If played from d left. So who do we play in his place? *Taiwo? Oh no! already 31(football age), overlaps too much, last played for eagles against Argentina@2010 worldcup. *Oshaniwa? Same with him. He has been out for a while. No time to integrate with d team. *Amuzie&Madu are too young and less experienced to cope with such attack. Poor timing n crosses as we can see @ Rio. FOR NOW Elderson Echiejile should start but with V.Moses playing from left- I think we'll have a good cover up.
For d RB: Ndidi should not start. It's either shehu or Omuero should be deploy but not Onazi (He is too attack minded that he'll join d attack and therefore exposing d defence-no amount of instruction will keep him there) Good points. U answered all the question as regarding the LB urself. If i had wanted to gun for Amuzie i would remember how Mohammed Salah turn him to his errand boy when we played Egypt in Kaduna. Echiejile is our best option for the next game. However i dnt buy the idea of starting Moses from the left instead of Iwobi. Let us not destabilize our attacking strenght bc we want to fortify our LB.Iwobi can start as LWF. He needs to be talked to to do more in supporting Echiejile and Echiejile should also minimise his forward runs and maintain position One of the centre backs should also be on alert to cover each time Echijile makes a forward move. You cannot completely stop forward mives by wing backs bc it is part of modern football. Victor Moses can start as the RWF. We need him more here cos we are likely fielding a make shift RB again. Moses can provide support here. |

Daninya11: Gernot Rohr have tested the partnership of Ekong and Balogun against Tanzania I think. We can bank on that. Just like he tested Musa Mohammed against Tanzania yet does nt trust his abilities. The Algeria game might be the confirmatory test of Ekong-Balogun partnership (2 Oyinbo) |

mikron: i dont think i know much about this Orji Okonkwo lad, did he play in one of our national cadre teams before going pro? besides is ur moniker Nigerian whizkid or naijaboy on zamfoot? If u dnt know Orji Okonkwo then u are not a true fan of Nigerian youth football. A whole you mikron dey ask who Orji Okonkwo be. A player whose goal against Mexico in the last U17 was in contention for goal of the tourney. |

tbaba1234: Yes, only game then he played most of the nations cup. That's why sometimes experience is sometimes overrated. Depending too much on rookies. That is why Siasia has always failed as a Super Eagles coach. |

TheSuperNerd: He also came in and played Right back against Burkina faso in our opening game at the Afcon after Ambrose's red card.
He also played right back a couple of times at Ado den haag of Holland. So we have it. Omeruo could be our RB against Algeria. |

BascoVanVeli: Using an out of position player is the same thing u r still depending on luck for things to go well. It is no luck. When it comes to marking and stopping capabilities Omeruo is one of the bests we have seen in the green and white jerseys in recent years. Had Balogun been fit Rohr would probably had started Omeruo at RB instead of Ndidi. The reasons he gave for starting Ndidi are exactly the qualities Omeruo posseses. |

tbaba1234: Yes, only game then he played most of the nations cup. That's why sometimes experience is sometimes overrated. Different coaches with different philosophies. The coach we have now believes in " big experience players for the big games". Based on this we know what to expect. I think Rohr is my kind of coach |

tbaba1234: Omeruo played one friendly at right back against cape verde. Yeah, correct and that was his first game for the Super Eagles right? |

Daninya11: Rohr should not gamble with his choice of players at RB and LB.
I strongly aver that he go with experienced and tested players against Algeria not green horn because this is not the right time to gamble or experiment.
For the right back position, he should choose between the Trio of Omeruo, Onazi or Balogun. Onazi fared well in that position in Afcon 2013 under coach Keshi against the Zambian when Ambrose was suspended. We all know the ability of Leon at Right back but his partnership with Ekong is just too perfect to be disrupted. Omeruo can cope with his versatility, pace, tackle and strength.
So either Onazi or Omeruo should start at Right Back.
At the Left back, Echiejele can do the job. Which Amuzie , we all saw how he was exposed constantly in the just concluded Olympics. Why gamble with such a player with the fire power of the Algerians?? . Will the Algerians sit back and allow us play just because we are host?, hell no. They will hit us with all they have got. Does Taiwo Taiye play competitive football? Let's move ahead joor. I would love to see more of Esiti in midfield.
Iwobi can wreck more havoc if he plays from the midfield so also Ahmed Musa if he plays as the arrow head. Correct! I would rather love to see a continuation of Onazi and Mikel partnership at the midfield. Ekong-Balogun partnership, I cannot say is a perfect one yet cos that Tanzania game was the first they played together as CBs and we know they were not much tested. One of the reasons why i would want Omeruo at RB is bc the ghost of that Zambia error may still be hunting him. He might get jittery. Also i have seen Omeruo at RB before, under Keshi.I'v forgotten the game or competition though.I recall he did nt disappoint. Let us use the Algeria game to test Ekong-Balogun partnership to see if this is what we can bank on. |
