Joebie: "My aim is to improve all the departments in the team. The most important ones are the goalkeeper and then the goal scorer, they are already two challenges now, we've been working on it for a long time now,"
"We knew the problem in the goalkeeping department before the AFCON, and that it could be a big problem at the AFCON.So, the bronze medal is really an achievement and we could have even gotten to the final. When you go to the history of winners of AFCON, you must be good in this position, you must be very good and I think we can be.
"So, for the goalkeeper position, we have MadukaOkoye, who plays for Dusseldorf; he will be a good one (keeper), I think."
PUNCH
For me it should be Uzoho, Okoye and Alampasu/any of the U23 goalies going forward. This trio can cope with the challenges of playing Benin, Sierra Leone and Lesotho. We need to start giving them the game time/ experience and confidence.
Any player that we don't think can make the next AFCON and WC IMO should be dropped now.
The strategy should be to use the 2021 AFCON qualifiers, 2022 WC qualifiers and 2021 AFCON to build a very formidable team for the 2022 WC. We should also win enough matches to boost our FIFA ranking so as to stand a chance of being placed in a higher seeded pot and by extension a relatively easy group.
No excuses for Rohr going forward. At least a Quarter Final for 2022WC and 2021 AFCON trophy should be the next yardstick for measurement for him.
komekn: I am not an advocate of video clips as the main tool to asses players it is too easily contrived and manipulated to make players look better than they actually are. When i submit video clips i only submit 5-7 minute clips of individual games not merge 5/6 games into one clip to make you look like Neymar when you are more like Phil Neville.
Aribo is tough battling midfielder who has fought his way against all odds to get to where he is, he hant been schooled in the technical niceties of the game but he is a warrior and he is somewhat similar to Gerrard in his style of play. Now that's the pertinent phrase STYLE OF PLAY.
So i am going to put three Youtube videos of these 4 players Aribo, Eze, Onomah, and Chuks which gives a clear indication of thier STYLE OF PLAY then you can answer the question which most suites the 9ja way or if you like historical organisation delivery ethos of the SE.
The choice is your, Akpoo, Amala, Starch or Pounded Yam
Ovie does not need to bulk up AT ALL he is deceptively strong although he doesn't really like the physical side of football he is more intelligent and technical with his football.
Watching these players' YouTube review is good. But it doesn't tell the whole story.
We have seen countless players in the past flop despite having eye poping video reviews.
There was a time on this thread when peeps would rate players as "our best defender", "our best striker" or "our best Midfielder" based solely on 5mins video reviews. Now we know better.
There will definitely be injection of new bloods into the Super Eagles but this cannot be solely based on these 3-5mins video reviews.
ChrisKels: Vincent Enyeama training with Dijon in a view to signing with them for the upcoming 2019/20 ligue1 season.
If Cameroun could bring back Kameni, even though dey have top quality young keepers in Ondoa and Onana, then...
Hey! hey!! So that on the eve of the 2022 WC we will discover Enyeama has lost form and we start experimenting goalies again.
Eyeama's era is and gone for good.
We need to start building for 2022 WC with the young goalies we have currently. This is the best time to give those green horns the necessary game time and not on the eve of a major tourney like the World Cup.
TheSuperNerd: I'm not particularly a Big Ighalo fan but I always say it as it is concerning the man. I praised him lots of times when he performed and even refused accepting that Mbaye Niang was better than him. I know when to draw the lines and do so without stinking bias.
isan: The second Cameron goal was omerou and ekong fault ..omerou for losing the challenge and ekong for not reading the ball and picked up the second ball...Aina was where he supposed to be the same position he was when he disposess the camerounian player for our third goal..the coach clearly instructed him to stay in that position
I have tried not to blame any player concerning that Cameroon's second goal because it was clearly none of the defenders' fault. Omeruo jumped to contest a header but due to the direction in which the ball was flying from and the position of both players with respect to each other (Omeruo as the defender had to be behind the Cameroonian attacker), it only means the Cameroonian player(forgotten his name) will likely get the ball first which he did. If he had missed, Omeruo would have headed the ball out.
Now, it was a 50-50 ball and so the Cameroonian player (Njie) had to hope his player got the ball before Omeruo so he ran in anticipation. Aina in split second had to decide between hoping Omeruo gets the ball and following Njie in case the Cameroonian player heads the ball. Njie ran and Aina followed is split second but because Njie had already built momentum and was running in the direction of the ball it meant he had a higher chance of knocking off Aina which he did. And that led to the goal.
I, for a person that played and coached the game, think there are certain scenarios you see play out and you find it difficult to blame players involved.
TheSuperNerd: Add Chukwueze to that list. He will use every opportunity to always talk down on Chuks' talents subtly.
On Awaziem, Komekn is probably the only blind bat to keep trying so hard to discredit Awaziem. A player who most top Journalists agree did a yeoman's job for us at Afcon 2019 and was one of our top revelations of the tournament. In fact, the less seriously people take that clown, Komekn here, the better....
Reading his comments can make one less intelligent for he never uses correct intelligence to make his points. His intelligence is corrupted thus he only uses his selective-bias skill + his English(borough)-plastered cortex to drop words.
Easy son....easy.
People will always dislike certain players no matter what. Eg there are some that dislike players like Shehu, Ighalo, Musa, Akpeyi and Ezenwa no matter how they perform in any game.
The best we can do is to argue it out with such people and move on.
sheyishemba: concerning the goalkeeping department the best option now base on performance is osigwe I won't want us to use his club to judge his this dude is better the ezenwa and akpeyi combined this dude is full of confidence lack of school boys error his poor stat his due to the poor defense of his team I could remember vividly a match his club played against Zurich if ezenwa was to be in goal he would have conceded more than 7 goals even odey confessed he gave him a very tough time and perhaps this dude is an experience goalkeeper at the age of 27 the guy is want we really need if he can be in stick with defender like omerou ekong and co there is no problem am not completely pessimistic about okoye he is for the future maybe if he prove himself in the U-23 then he can't compete for the second choice while a good goalkeeper from the league can replace ezenwa we don't need much quality goalkeeper coz of our great defender so there shouldn't be so much worry
I have been following Osigwe for sometime. The guy doesn't look good enough.
Where we should look at now for immediate shopping is from the current U23 goalies: Maduka Okoye, Uzoho and Oremade. We can also look at Alampasu.
I see people mentioning Zaccala. Dude has potentials but still has a long way to go. Let's see him team up with the 2021 U20 team and then we know in which direction his Development can go.
That country has toiled so much in the world of soccer, they have come so close on some occasions, yet have not won any single title at any level of football (asides beach soccer)
It would be nice to see them break that jinx tonight even with an African coach.
BascoVanVeli: So the balls just magically found his feet? With all our players in the box he still found space and gave Omeruo an option. Then he was even more open than Musa on his second and that was a timed run btw.
You must be mistaken. The cross is to be directed at the striker. You can't blame Ighalo for a bad cross.
Haha immediately tbaba1234 made that comment on Ighalo I was looking out for your response.
TheGoodJoe: I think it was here someone pointed out a team not qualifying for a tournament could mean the team is working towards something big. We need a long term agenda with an offensive footie pattern being the target.
A blip of not qualifying should not be the end of the journey. With lessons learnt and corrections, we can build a formidable side that will wreck havoc to even top teams of the World.
That is why we were so satisfied with Rohr’s conservative system because qualifying was the goal, not building a top sound tactical team.
You can better build a team when you qualify for a tournament.
TheGoodJoe: I totally disagree. Mikel was played off position and in the right position, he will use his most prized possessions. Vision and reading. In that position where he was played, he was totally hindered.
That is the baffling thing about Rohr that puzzles me. For goodness sake, make positional changes during games. You can make transitions of playing style into games to boost players. Why not move Mikel to a better natural position and see if he does not shine.
But Rohr, no, Mr. Rock of Gibraltar will not make the right moves.
Mikel has lost steam. It is not about whether playing him as an AM or a CM. Do you also think should have played him against Algeria and not Etebo?
TheGoodJoe: It takes time to impart the offensive philosophy and we have seen few coaches with inexperience out class the so called experienced ones.
As I said before, the philosophy comes first. Most of the experienced coaches who will likely fit the bill for the job, will definitely lag behind when it comes to the philosophy.
Remember Guardiola's first season was a disaster. It did not mean the team was going in the right direction. With time and support, our players will soak in the knowledge and mount the wings to fly.
Inexperienced coaches can still do well in a club setting with the right set of players or with a backing to go purchase the right set of players.
Talking about taking long for a coache's philosophy to sink, there is no such time in the national team setting. You are in a qualifiers group and then u lose ur first two matches and say ur teams philosophy has not sunk, my friend ur team is on its way out of the qualifiers and so is ur job on its way out of ur hands.
Amuneke is not the right man for the Eagles job for now
Curtisaxel7: Has Mikel played a single game as a CM in this tourney?. How then can you rate a player's performance when he is played out of position?.
As far as I am concerned, Rohr is responsible for Mikel's poor show at this AFCON. It is clear even to the blind since the Croatia game at the WC that Mikel is no longer a no. 10. Yet Rohr insisted on playing him there and then dumping him on the bench for "not performing". What was he expecting?. How would Etebo perform if played as a CF or goalkeeper?.
The last game Mikel played as a CM for us was in his man-of-the-match performance against Zimbabwe. I strongly suggest you go rewatch that game to fully appreciate the quality of Mikel in his natural position. See the beautiful quick one-two passes with Iwobi. See the brilliant ball controls. See the midfield organization. See the flair. See the finesse. See the beauty. If not for the heavy rain and perhaps Onuachu, we would've put at least 3 goals into the Zimbabwean net.
Mikel as a CM was our key to beautiful football at this AFCON, but trust Rohr, the chief carpenter, to pick one of his co-tradesmen .
Did you watch Mikel's form against Burundi and Madagascar? He has lost touch. Even if you play him in the CM position it will still be a problem.
Etebo has been one of our best performing players in the tourney, he has played 90mins of all games. And you get to the semi-final, to play a very tough Algerian side and you bench him for a Mikel who we know has completely lost steam? Who does that?
forgiveness: Awaziem did nothing to free Chukwueze. He left him to deal with the Algerian LB on his own.
I expected Awaziem to support him upfront but he lack the pace to run up and down the flank and lacked the experience of a RB.
Besides, Awaziem was the only Nigerian player that got a yellow card. The Algerian pressed his wings often in that game.
However, the plan B is if Chukwueze didn't get the space after the introduction of Aina, we can easily switch to 3-5-2.
Firstly, the primary duty of a defender is to defend. Did you also consider whether Chukwueze also did enough to support Awaziem? Look you played Algeria who are the best attacking team in this tournament.
A full back should be more engaged in checking the advancement of the opposing wingers than adventuring forward. Chukwueze not living up to expectations in that game cannot be attributed to Awaziem. The Algerians just pocketed him. Simple. SA did not know how lethal Chukwueze was. His introduction into that game was the joker Rohr used to beat SA.
