My Transcript - Approval was today.

Thank you all for your congratulatory messages. The winning started with arrriving early at the venue, interviewers were not settled yet, their blue paper issuance software never boot finish.

The smart lady in front of me (I think she was Abimmbolar) answered her questions neatly and got approved - nice way for the VO to 'start his hand'. I tot mine would be a breeze and it was - I went in after her.

Vo - Good morning
Me - Good morning

Vo - How are you doing? (Me sef fear for the courtesy)
Me - Fine thank you, how are you Sir?

Vo - Fine too, [in my mind.... This will go very well…] why Tamuk?
Me - I applied to 5 schools and got admitted to all of them so it wasn't an easy decision to make. [In my mind.... Vo must hear this..]

Other schools have ongoing researches in Security and safety, healthcare.... [Vo cuts in... excuse me... switches off the mic... rolls his chair backwards to speak to someone...]

[He returns...]

Me - As I was saying, others schools have ongoing research options in safety and security, transportation and shipping, healthcare and manufacturing but Tamuk offers an Operations research option in Energy and Oil and Gas production which is the industry I currently work in.

Vo - What was your undergraduate degree in?
Me - [asks him to repeat and he did]
Me - Mechanical Engineering. [Vo excuses himself again... switches mic off... slides back to talk to someone again]

Vo - Tell me about your course.
Me - [Well prepared] Industrial Engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the design, analysis, evaluation and optimization of large systems and processes taking into consideration their interaction with machines, materials, and manpower. (I mentioned 5 considerations... can't recall all..)

Vo - What courses would you be doing.
Me - [Well prepared] Lean manufacturing, Advanced problems in I.E, Six sigma n ISO standards, Reliability Theory, Linear Programming... I named like 8. [He cuts me off...]

Vo - What is this scholarship in? [I didn't understand the question, replied all the same cos I didn't want to ask him to repeat...]
Me - I got a tuition waiver which entitles me to an in-state tuition payment and also I got a $1k scholarship which covers some costs of books.

Oga Sir started circling pick up location and said you want to pick up at Port Harcourt?...

Me - Yes Sir

He handed me back my i20, said and I heard all - 'you will need this at the point of entry' as he was giving me the white paper. [Na so I envision myself touching down at JFK... Connecting flight to Texas waiting].

I was glad I didn't have to pay the 64k again and then travel all the way to Lagos.... I remembered the song 'You Made a Way' by Travis Greene as I walked out....

Please, I need clarity on an issue... I'll be writing the GRE October, and this question has been on my mind: Should I be thinking of writing TOEFL, too?

Some schools would waive the Toefl for you, some others would not. Where I will be attending mailed me that every applicant should submit toefl scores. However, they used my Verbal score even after I submitted Toefl scores.

Some that do not worry you for toefl would require you to do and pass an English course on resumption - costs a lot more, then you would wish you took the 'simple anad cheap' Toefl.

If cash is available, write Toefl and free your soul from restlessness. smiley

If the student visa is issued, you may not enter the US on that visa more than 30 days before the start of classes.

Kindly verify the bolded because the 'Class start date' and 'Program start date' (this one is earlier) are different dates (like in my i20).

International students orientation come up before the classes start. Thanks.

Hello guyz, Pls how do I get DHL to pick up my i20 from a NewYork address and send it to Lagos.

Adding to what others have said...

*You will need the "sender's" name, address, email and phone number (make sure the sender is available to pick up).

A missed pickup takes 1-2weeks for a refund and will cost you a N1,000 'administrative processing fee' (I experienced or I'm 'still experiencing' it).

*The sender has to fill DHL's waybill with your information - name, phone number & Nigerian address where the document will be received. Ensure someone will be available to receive it (the delivery man had to make sacrifices to track me to a different location I was at cos I wasn't home to receive). Earned him money for 2 bottles of **** wink

Pleasiooo, ensure the sender in the U.S is ready to fill the waybill cos DHL doesn't fill it. Twice experienced this.

[s]Lagos should be cheaper than 22k, document arrives Lagos b4 it gets to P/H. Sending documents within Nigeria is[/s] 5k+, [s]so I did a little 'alaroro' mathematics for you.[/s] Don't quote me anywiaaaa! cheesy

Hello guys my school sent my i20 to me...
I want to know the easiest means for him to send it to me he said Dhl is too expensive, Guys pls help

You can schedule a pickup with DHL Nigeria for about N22,000. I did it from Port Harcourt.

They will go to your uncle's USA home or office address to pick it up and then deliver to you at your own designated Nigerian address. Takes 3-4 business days.

Someone here used Courier Plus for same service, cost him N16k from a Lagos location.

Sir/Ma.
What is the way forward?

Hi Ferfer, my suggestion might be late but here is how I survived the referee/recommendation ish.

I asked 2 very senior colleagues having about 8yrs experience to write me 'professional' recommendations. I know they wrote glowing ones.

I submitted only 1 academic rec from a Prof because of the difficulty getting them to write one and I survived it. No school blinked.

This worked for MSc for 5 schools, don't know about PhD.

The choice still lies with you but If I were you, I will consider Uni of Houston,Auburn or Louisiana State University because of the Alunmi network, ranking and job prospect in the City. LSU and Houston are very good schools with company affiliations. Don't really know much about Auburn in Alabama Then again, If you get funding in any of the schools you listed and you didn't get from the others, I guess destiny has made the decision for you already. I will choose the school with funding, schooling here without funding is HELL if your dad is not one of the politicians back home.

cheesy cheesy @ bolded.

My brother, decision hasn't been easy.

No funding from LSU and Auburn, had some issues with my application that resulted in late admission.

I still deh look sha - around 18k due to partial funding to attend Tamuk or UofH for a year versus 39k to attend Auburn for same duration. cry

LagosismyHome:

There is a school in Louisiana with a good on campus recruitment , although I think it the school in Lafayette and not Baton Rouge .. For me Louisiana will be high on which to accept , although I am just looking at oncampus recruiting prospect after graduation and not overall package

I need about 34k to attend there. Wish I got partial funding.

Everything UniV will offer you UPenn will offer and maybe much more especially when you have funding for both option.... but Pennstate ok that a different conversation

Let me find and paste her explanation... Even if we replace PennState with UPenn, her decision would still have made sense for her particular situation.

I might sound crazy but after 2 sleepless nights of thorough contemplation, I think I will have to resign the Penn State appointment. Yes, I have spent about 300k to send transcripts, ship I-20 and paid reservation on an apartment lease but it's really about what I want out of the PhD program. The stipend Virginia is offering is actually a little less than Penn but it's a GRA that is guaranteed till I finish my program so long as I maintain 3.0GPA, and the research fellowship covers all tuition fees and health insurance. On top of that, my POI guarantees funding for travel for conferences, and pushes his students to deliver poster presentations and publish papers every year. He seems to invest a lot of time in his students and I really like that. And in that department, there are 3 other Profs in the same research area. That encourages sharing of information and the students can always assist and encourage each other.

On the Other hand, Penn State offers a GTA for the first year and you are supposed to explore research areas within your first year and hopefully match a Prof that can offer you GRA. If that fails, then you are stuck with GTA till you find GRA or maybe till the end of your program. In my case, there is only 1 Prof in my research area. So the big question is ...what if she does not have funding? And I remember her telling me last 2 years when I was just exploring that she had no funding and that if I were to apply and be accepted, my only hope would be the departmental GTA which is what is happening now. I tried to contact her again during this application process but she never responded. So I don't know if situations have changed.

My main objective of studying for a PhD is build research skills and I want to start developing that from day 1. That will even facilitate an early completion of the program. I don't want to be stuck 'building communication skills' and at the end of the first year, I can't even set up a simple experiment grin and no headway on how to start my research. The other good thing about Virginia is that in my 3rd/4th year, I will be required to serve partly as a TA to build communication skills. That way, it's like getting the best of both worlds.

Whilst Carnegie Mellon rejected me, I was never going to go there because they are not strong in my research area. In fact, they don't even offer it. I know I might sound silly but I just wanted to test it because Nastydamus was going to apply there and he had my same GRE scores, LOL. The last school is UPitt, no news from that end at all and frankly, I can't be bothered.

No, I am not waiting for Ohio. I spent my money and time to apply and I want to know what they eventually decide. It's also a fully funded program through strictly GRAs.

In the end, Penn State is higher ranked than UVA but I don't think the difference is so significant. I don't want to join a program that I am not really happy with just because of a 'little bit more name' grin. And I really hope that I am making the right decision. It's the immensity of my contribution to knowledge that will give me Green Card wink (if Trump go gree) and a rewarding career in research.

Sorry for my long speech this hot Sunday afternoon!

No right thinking individual will reject UniPenn for UniV, it has to be PenState and not UniPenn.

Yes it is PennState, but the decision on where to attend does not and should not solely rest on the school ranking.
