Gluck4cars: Thanks, sensible explanation. apparently, i should be possible to set one up and not the other. Auxiliary question, why don't cars come inbuilt with tracking capabilities? |

i have been in that situation before, replacing two engines in one year. I think you face two issues here. The quality of the engine and transmission being replaced and the quality of the workmanship. On the quality of the engine and transmission - if that matters a lot to you, you will need to import from reputable scrap yards overseas, unlike here they tell you the mileage of the car the engine was taken from. On the quality of the workmanship, as a rule i study all my cars the placement of everything in the engine bay and under the engine bay, i take pictures and i check it from time to time so I know where everything is placed and I can tell when something has changed position. Based on practical experience no matter the quality of the workshop that does your work, please do a cross-check afterwards, take it to a lube bay and go under and do a visual inspection. I have experienced a situation in which the speed sensor was allowed to rub against the wheel and the brake lines were allowed to rub against the wheel. I had to have those corrected myself after I did the inspection. I have had situations where they fix one thing and spoil another so your best best to get close to those who own your type of vehicle and try to discover is there a consensus of some sorts as to who is best in handling issues with my type of vehicle and after you decided on one, remember that in the final analysis, you are your number 1 mechanic, its your car, you drive it day in day out not the mechanic, so you should be able to tell when something is amiss, and to a large extent, he will do fixes based on your report of the situation |

You seem to know more about cars than senior brother, sorry this happened to you. Hope you won't take this i bad faith, you need to share more of what you know with your brother, it might have prevented this. Also, always ask a for second opinion and a third opinion or do your research online before you commit to a course of repairs whether from a dealership, a stealership and independent or a roadside mechanic. Many a time mechanics - both roadside and dealerships and independents can fix one problem and create another - that happens here and overseas including the US and Europe. There are so many stories online to testify to that. No wonder the term stealership came into use. It is good advice to stay away from the roadies but I was conducting some research at a popular spare sparts market and i saw a woman that I felt was out of place there getting her car serviced, so I made some discreet enquiries and I learnt she is an ex-Minister's wife, she has not fallen out of funds as the car she was having serviced demonstrated or the quality of the parts being used to do the service BUT she ran away from all the Toyota dealerships to a common ordinary spare parts market. The morale of the story: seems not only the lowly are running away from the dealerships, even the high and mighty. SO if you have the funds or do not mind go to the dealerships, if you don't have such funds, then do some discreet investigations and I am sure you will find a mechanic that might not be linked to a dealership but who knows his work, and I usually do not recommend going away while your work is done. There are very good independents, some charge heaven and earth, others charge more reasonable fees. I wish you the best. There is no shortcut all the damaged items must be replaced with new, the damage is too extensive to be fixed and expect a safe and sound car I am tired of hearing stories of I had this little problem, and I went to the mechanic and he suggested this and that and now I am in this mess. Now, don't get me wrong, I have been there, so I know how it feels. |

Does anyone know of any auto shop in abuja that has equipment for raising/lifting vehicles and has electric welding facilities to weld some hard to reach parts underneath a vehicle? My client is not interested in those that will require lying on the ground to do the work. Like illustrated in the video above. Please email or PM me with the details. Thanks. |

Trac: While Trac's response was targeted at the Mercedes Brand, it is a very good principle to take back your "bad" parts, because of the reasons he earlier gave, and to make matters worse, the repairman might even end up selling your part to you when you need it badly claiming it was disposed of, it has happened to me once and it can never happen to me again. This holds true for all brands. |

Can someone explain why most luxury car dealers say that the manufacturers do not recommend installing car trackers in their machines? I have experienced this with two upscale brands in Nigeria! |
![]() |
Siena: Very valid points there. In addition based on experience with certain cars, users might even be well advised to exceed the specifications in the manual by no more than 1 litre if there was a design fault that did not allow the oil to return to the sump at extremely high speeds, a good example being Mazda MPV 2000 and 2001 models if they operated the vehicles at such high speeds or made turns at very high speeds as well |

olumide4christ: @IdaraCHODB - I am considering purchasing a MPV 2001 or 2003. What's your advice on that? Do you know about competent/reliable Mazda specialist mechanics or mechanics in Lagos that can adequately handle the car?? Please I need their details so that I can ensure that adequate hands are on ground to maintain the car if or when i eventually buy it. Hope to hear from you soon. thanks. I used to say get the 2000/2001 model but then I learnt something, if you love to drive at very high speeds, above 150km/hr then you need to put not 5. something liters but 6 litres in the engine because there is a problem with the 2000/2001, at such high speeds the oil does nor return to the sump as quickly as it should which you know is a major problem as far as lubrication is concerned. That issue was fixed in the 2002+ models, the drains are bigger so the oil returns faster. Just thought I should quickly add that! 1 Like |

olumide4christ: I tried to get the number of a mechanic in Lagos without success, but I have the number of the seller of the engine in Lagos, he will link you up to reputable mechanics, his number is 0809 708 2487 |

omotoda: Answering your question more directly For Applicable Custom Duties, please see here: https://www.customs.gov.ng/Tariff/index.php Charge per pound: $6 Charge per Kilo: $11.5 Note: Prices above for goods landing at Lagos. Extra charges applicable for delivery to other states |

omotoda: Great idea! An item may weigh 4.1 pounds without packaging and where 6 pounds after packaging for shipment. Also, the dimensions may be 18 x 3.9 x 2.4 inches before packaging and 20 x 5 x 5 after packaging. Additionally, many shops will not provide the dimensions of the part on the product pages online (although they will provide you a charge for shipping), we often only get to know the dimensions for some of the packages after the shipment has arrived, so this puts us in a bind. Is the client going to be ready to pay the difference? If you were in the situation, what would you do? |
