Chinatown itself is a response to oppression but what do I know? People don't read history anymore, they give it to Ai
[/ ## The Birth of Ethnic Enclaves: A History of Racism and Resilience The creation of Chinatowns, Japantowns, and other ethnic enclaves in the 1800s wasn't a simple choice, but rather a complex response to deeply ingrained racism and discriminatory policies. Let's delve into the historical context: Early Immigration and Hostility (1850s-1880s): * Chinese Immigration: The California Gold Rush and transcontinental railroad construction attracted a large influx of Chinese immigrants. They faced intense hostility, fueled by economic anxieties, cultural differences, and racist stereotypes. * Anti-Chinese Sentiment: This sentiment manifested in discriminatory laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which barred Chinese laborers from entering the U.S. and denied citizenship to those already residing there. Violence against Chinese communities was also prevalent. * Japanese Immigration: Japanese immigrants started arriving in the late 19th century, seeking opportunities in agriculture and other sectors. They too faced similar discriminatory treatment and were often relegated to low-paying jobs. Formation of Ethnic Enclaves (Late 1800s): * Survival and Support: Facing hostility and exclusion from mainstream society, Chinese and Japanese immigrants sought refuge and support within their own communities. They formed close-knit enclaves in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York. * Economic Necessity: Discrimination in housing and employment forced these communities to establish their own businesses, restaurants, and cultural institutions. This fostered economic self-sufficiency and cultural preservation. * Social Cohesion: Ethnic enclaves provided a sense of belonging and cultural identity for immigrants facing isolation and alienation. They offered familiar languages, customs, and traditions, easing the transition to a new land. Evolution and Challenges (1900s-Present): * Continued Discrimination: Despite their resilience, these communities continued to face discriminatory policies like the Alien Land Laws, which barred Asian immigrants from owning land. * World War II Internment: The forced internment of Japanese Americans during World War II further highlighted the vulnerability of these communities and the persistent racism they faced. * Urban Development and Gentrification: In recent decades, many Chinatowns and Japantowns have faced challenges due to urban development and gentrification, leading to displacement and cultural erosion. Legacy and Significance: * Cultural Hubs: Chinatowns, Japantowns, and other ethnic enclaves have evolved into vibrant cultural hubs, showcasing unique traditions, cuisines, and festivals. They serve as a testament to the resilience and contributions of immigrant communities. * Challenges Remain: Despite progress, these communities continue to face issues like cultural appropriation, economic disparity, and the ongoing struggle for historical recognition and social justice. It's important to remember that the history of ethnic enclaves is not solely defined by racism. It's also a story of community, resilience, cultural preservation, and economic success in the face of adversity. These neighborhoods serve as a reminder of the complex history of immigration and the ongoing fight for equality and inclusion. |
To me, this is a very wrong way to go about it, on the part of LASG. Instead of increasing the travails of the hapless drivers, they should have temporarily suspend the App's license, thereby rendering the App unusable until the company complies with the LASG directives. But, impounding innocent people's vehicles and deflating their tyres, amounts to a gross misconduct, to be honest. |

You forgot to include on Maxwell guy back then on Ray power. I've forgotten his full name. |
I remember those days of growing up with family friends who are Plumptres , it's embarrassing seeing even otherwise educated folks struggle with the pronunciation of Lagos families names) You are right Mr. Vaughan. I had that problem when I first met you at Freedom Park, as I've always pronounced your name as (Vorgan) instead of Vahn. But I learned it and quickly adapted. Most people don't have as much problem pronouncing mine as they do with the spelling, writing judge, instead of George. It is an excusable mistake, though, owing to English not being our mother's tongue. Ire o. |
Which teacher in ur secondary school days , that when u see him/her ..u start running.. throw back to secondary days. Mr. Kpotie, Principal of St Finbarr's College, Akoka. I never saw him beat anyone but the minute students sight him, they take to their heels. Mr. Ola Omodara, the Academic vice that used to beat mercilessly was not as feared as the principal. Another one was Mr. Aborishade, the VP of Muslim college, Egbe. The principal, who was said to have been shot in one leg by thieves, was not even feared at all. Okay, I remember Mr. Chucks, alias Dugbe Market. He would flog nonsense out of you, the minute you alight from the bus, in front of the school. His philosophy was that students ought to trek and not be entering buses, just as he too used to, from his house at Sugbe market to school when he was a student. |

A former colleague of mine once asked that I accompany him to his bank to sort out similar situation. I asked what the matter was and he said he had up to N40k in his account but couldn't access it anymore, because it was restricted. I asked him what he did and he said replied that he did nothing wrong. As someone that has a little connection at the First Bank then, with all confidence and boldness, I marches with him to the branch. It was at motorways then, in Alausa. Unknown to us, upon getting there, they had prepared a police officer somewhere to ferry him away to their station. I knew the branch manager then and, she it was that made the police station arrangement. With the 'culprit' closely behind me, I sauntered into her office, exchanged pleasantries and queries why my colleague's account was blocked. She said I should ask him what he did, so that he, by himself would explain everything before she would even say anything at all. I turned to the man behind me to ask what the matter was once more but it was a totally different man I saw. The bravado and confidence he was brandishing earlier when he came to call me was totally gone. He was now looking like a kid caught red-handed with his hand in the cookie jar. At that point I knew I had made a huge mistake following him that day. I probably had followed a thief to the bank, won't they hold the two of us like this!... I'm busy yet, I'll complete the story before the end of today, when I'm through with what I'm doing. Meanwhile, OP please search your conscience very well o, so that you wouldn't go to embarrass whoever goes there with you, whether lawyer or not. |
Yesterday I was caught for bypassing, I wasn’t at home, so before I got back they’ve cut down my wire, my neighbor won’t let them take away the meter and wire.
Approach the Business Manager, man. Nothing Mega. They will quote 500k. Beg the man. They usually calculate your normal monthly usage before bypass and multiply by the total months. At least, be ready for 100k officially and something for the boys. And please, don't try it again. It's a criminal offense. |
