Islam › Re: Friday Message: Did Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) Marry A Child? by Ifeann(f): 9:38pm On Feb 27, 2015 |
onetrack: Atheist here. This whole issue of Muhammad marrying a 6-year-old girl is not a big deal from a historical perspective, as it is rightly pointed out that many cultures have accepted child marriage until quite recent times. I personally do not use the 'Muhammad-as-pedophile' approach, as he was a man of his time.
The problem is that Muslims hold up Muhammad as the role model for all of humanity for all time.
Whether or not some European ruler married a 6 year old back in the year 1400 doesn't really matter because nobody would consider him to be best man in history, worthy of being imitated until the end of time, unlike Muslims who are expected to try to imitate the life of Muhammad as the proper way of living. As a result, any Muslim who is against child marriage could be rightly criticised from a strict Islamic point of view. The Quran even gives instructions on how to divorce your pre-pubescent wife. Considering that Islam is considered to be final and unchangeable, this means that child marriage can never really be outlawed in an Islamic state. That, in my view, is a problem.
I would note that Christianity does not actually forbid child marriage either, and that neither religion forbids slavery. U raised excellent points.. I want to add that the bible makes it clear u marry a woman and not a child..this is not even debatable. . 1 Corinthians 7:2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 1 Corinthians 7:1-40 ESV / 1,012 helpful votes Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. ... Leviticus 21:7 ESV / 38 helpful votes They shall not marry a prostitute or a woman who has been defiled, neither shall they marry a woman divorced from her husband, for the priest is holy to his God. notice the use of the word woman and not girl or female.. |

iboladeji: >>> Did Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) marry a child? <<<
People wonder and ask, Did Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) marry a child? Was this a normal practice 1400 years ago? What was the wisdom behind it?
According to authentic sources, the Prophet Muhammad married Aisha (RA), when she was 6 years old, and the marriage was consummated after she was 9. However, it is important to understand things in their historical context. For instance, it would be silly to ask, what kind of milk did they drink 1400 years ago. Or what kind of engine did they have back then.
Therefore, one must understand that things 1400 years ago were very different from now, times have changed and so humans. 1400 years ago, it was very common for women to marry at a young age. It is a historical fact that girls from the ages of 9 to 14 were married off in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. For example: Saint Augustine in 350AD married a 10 year old girl King Richard II in 1400AD married a 7 year old Henry VIII in 15000AD married a 6 year old girl
Even in the Bible, "but save for yourselves every GIRL who has never slept with a man" Numbers 31:17-18
According to Catholic Encyclopedia, "Mary the mother of Jesus was 12 when she married 99 year old Joseph" Before 1929, Church of England minister could marry 12 year olds in Britain. Before 1983, Catholic canon laws permitted priests to marry off brides at the age of 12.
A lot of people are unaware that in the Delaware (United States) in 1880, the minimum age for marriage was 7 years old and in California was 10 years. Even now, the marriage age for some states are 12 for Massachusetts 13 for New Hampshire 14 in New York
At the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), those who refused his message tried every method and strategy to discredit him. They were always looking for opportunities to attack him verbally and even physically. Some of this verbal abuse consisted of calling him magician, soothsayer, crazy. However, they never thought to point out or object to his marriage to Aisha (RA). Why? Because it was the norm of the society, meaning it was completely normal.
Do you know that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had only one wife, Khadijah, throughout the first 54 years of his life? Did you know that she was a widow? Did you know that she was 15 years older than him? He (PBUH) spent his entire youth with her. He was committed to her until and after her death by keeping ties with her friends.
What about Aisha, was she a child when she agreed to marry Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)?
Note: The age of puberty varies throughout different times and different places.
According to scientific references, "Girls might enter full-blown puberty anytime between the ages of 9 and 15" LiveScience. Also, "The average temperature of the country is considered the chief factor with regard to menstruation and sexual puberty" Women:An Historical Gynecological, and Anthropological Compedium Volume 1, Lord & Bransby, 1988, p.563
So was Aisha a child? No she was not! So what about the wisdom behind this marriage? God always knows best! But the marriage of Aisha (RA) was an instruction from God (Bukhari Volume 5: Book 58: Hadith 235) Aisha (RA) narrated to us more than 2200 hadiths (sayings) of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Aisha (RA) was exceptionally intelligent, and since she married the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) at a young age, she was able to learn so much from him. She later played an important role as a teacher, expert and interpreter of Islam So there was so much wisdom behind this marriage! For those who do not know the Prophet Muhammad (PHUB), He did not come to seek worldly pleasure, but he warned us against them! His companion described him as a man of morality and they said he was shyer than a virgin in seclusion. When believers asked him an awkward question, he would cover his face out of shyness. He taught us that each religion is know for a kind of morality and the morality of Islam is Shyness/Modesty.
Transcribe from a DeenShow video http://www.thedeenshow.com/watch/2962/marriage-to-aisha U actually got this information from the deen show. lol.. which is run by Yusuf Estes aka the lieing imam.. i can give u links to muslim sites discrediting him as a lair and muskirin. Liekiller: The root of Africa's undervelopment today IS colonialism. The destruction of entire societies and cultures was by no means a "liberation", and it's a terrible thing to say that. I'm not denying that a lot has gone wrong after it ended too, but the root lingers on and doesn't help matters. The religious madness we see today is a symptom as well as a cause of underdevelopment. I certainly don't say atheism is the solution to this. It's not, and it's not even my goal to change anyone's belief. But: increasing fanaticism is a huge worry nowadays. Ironically, this variety of Christianity is strongly supported, imported and financed by outlandish churches in the US. So, according to you the "liberation" continues. And I can tell you I'm not happy about it. To be honest I wanted to have a challenging, intelligent and lively conversation with you but several things u say just don't make sense. For example, "But: increasing fanaticism is a huge worry nowadays. Ironically, this variety of Christianity is strongly supported, imported and financed by outlandish churches in the US" What are u even taking about, us churches financing nigerian churches or did I misunderstand u.. Pls elaborate. |

When I bursted your lie about Dangote/Sanusi with regard to zakat, you carefully ignored it. Good job, so stop talking about sincerity.
Wait, you don't know if you're a guy or a girl again? Stick to one gender at a time girl. Why are you using guy/girl to describe yourself? This is strange!!! Dude does dangote pay zakat. Yes or no. 2. Have u ever spotted sanusi in a neck tie.. Look, don't u think I have an issue with these men, dangote was the richest black man last year and sanusi gave those corrupt bankers and subsidy folks a tough time during his tenure. I have respect for these men. Their choice of apparel doesn't bother me,, I only pointed out an observation made clear by that article from an Islamic website. I told u I read a lot of pro Islamic material. I only do the gender stuff cos it amuses me how u and ur colleagues react to it.. But on a serious note, do not insult or mock Muslims. Only state facts backed up by the quran and hadiths. |

Liekiller: ok I see. As I said, your true colurs are shining through. We live in a cruel and imperfect world indeed if you defend and praise what happened in those times and is still affecting Africa badly today. Where's your "Christian love"?? I am not just a christain i am also a realist... I don't praise what happened to Africans but i understand why it happened. .. infact Africans have been relatively lucky. . Every civilization has its share of sad events case in point slavery for the africans, genocide for the native americans...holocaust for the jews, Hiroshima and Nagasaki for the Japanese, Britian and indeed europe has had countless wars for resources and otherwise, Spanish inquisition. .etc...its endless... humans tend to be very chaotic lifeform.. however atheism and attacking christainity is not the solution nor does it help on the least. .. Africans have just refused to develop their society... |

Obviously you are not aware of the devastating consequences colonialism (of which forcing Christianity on Africa was a major part) had on the continent We don't live in a perfect world. .. |

Liekiller: Firstly, I'm not a "fellow", and secondly I'm a physical anthropologist, currently postdoc at a university in the diaspora. More specifically: bachelor in general biology (included math, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, zoology, botany, evolution, microbiology etc.), then masters in physical anthropology (included primatology, comparative anatomy, human anatomy, osteology, primate evolution etc. etc.) and archaeology and palaeontology, then PhD in physical anthropology. Published a few peer-reviewed and other papers too which I don't care to quote here since my identity is attached to them. No, I don't really care if you believe it or not, but it's the truth. So, let's get another dose of Joshthefirst toxine I won't even bother to doubt you. . U may as well be a professor of biology but ur assumed intellect is not reflected in the construct of the statements u have until now made. .. starting with the verbatim copy and paste from that silly website. .. that's unapologetic plagiarism man. .a post doc like u should know that |

Joshthefirst: Lol. All you have done is copy and paste from evil bible then rant about having a doctorate in biology. How do you think anyone is going to take you seriously? Singing about your supposed higher knowledge of these things when you have demonstrated none here. Or should I start going about my own credentials? Do you think shouting about a doctorate will give credence to the nothingness you have shown so far? Doctorate I hear.
And the burden is on you to give a single scrap of evidence of common descent here since you spout it as fact, but you have given nothing but referrals to imaginary works so far. Makes me think you are afraid of having any serious conversation for fear of embarrassment of your very educated self.
Very well Dr. Liekiller, stick to copying and pasting evil bible. When you want to have a real scientific conversation inform people who are interested. The fellow is not a dr. I discuss with academics on a regular basis.. he doesnt sound like one... no offense drliekiller but i ain't buying it buddy..maybe u should give me an idea on what ur research paper was on.. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Top Ten Signs You're A Fundamentalist Christian by Ifeann(f): 9:37pm On Feb 19, 2015 |
Liekiller: Certainly in the long history of its existence the Catholic church has been involved in education, most notably in the "education" and oppression of African "savages" at the time (and all too often even today). The same "poor savages" who now depend on their "charity" due to having had their culture, economy and societies destroyed by this charitable organisation. Don't even get me started about it
Either way, I have the impression that your main reason to participate in this discussion is to bash Islam every now and then? How does that go together with your statements earlier in this thread please? If those terrible wicked white men didn't come with the gospel and education u Africans would still be blinded by ur superstitions And heathen traditions or perhaps beheaded for not converting to Islam like how usman dan fidio did in the North of Nigeria. . Dude i make it clear i detest Islam. . |
