Nwa-oma:Pauloman is right...healthcare is a portable profession, which means you can work almost anywhere in Canada. Depending on your area of specialisation, you might want to research as to potential employers (hospitals? other healthcare instutions?) and try finding out what they will require from you to be able to work in Canada (eg do you have to write some kind of professional test? Do you need some particular kind of experience, etc) before you arrive, to help make your transition smoother. |
TRV_IJN: @ifegyNo worries... all the best with your application |
deniyor: Good points. Where in Canada are you located?Ontario |
deniyor: What does that mean in terms of employment? Statistics Canada show Ontario has the highest unemployment (Nunavut really doesn't count). A simple google search will also show Ontario is the province with the most red and a crippling economy. This is despite canada having picked itself up from the recession. Of course, based on population, ontario has the highest GDP. But based on recent trends, Alberta is well poised to over Ontario as the economic hub of Canada.Well, it's important to have a balanced view of these things. There are so many factors to consider when looking at the employment picture in Canada. As mentioned earlier, if you're looking for a position in Oil and Gas or mining, then by all means head to Alberta and Saskatchewan respectively, or even the Northwest Territories or Northern Ontario, as you will be more likely to find what you want there. If you're interested in the tech industry, then perhaps Waterloo, Ontario, with its tech cluster might work for you. If you want financial services, then Bay Street in Toronto, Ontario is a better choice than St John's, Newfoundland. If you want salmon fishing, then Vancouver might work better for you. If you want construction, well, there are more high rises going up in Toronto than almost anywhere else in the world so that might work for you. If you want to work in a French environment, then head to Quebec. Federal government? Ottawa's probably best. Just ensure you're bilingual. Farming? Take your pick on the provinces. And so on. In Ontario, from personal experience, there are people (including immigrants) I know with very good professional jobs, as well as those looking for jobs, and those who have gone to other provinces for jobs, or even personal/lifestyle preference. Just to give some perspective, the Ontario economy is almost three times that of Alberta, so it might take a while for both economies to change places. Having said that, it's a free country. Do your research, get a balanced view, and make your choice where you want to end up. |
Blazemortimer: this thread has really been enlightening and im sure its appreciated cos i do appreciate it. I want to study in Canada but combing through tons of information has not been easy. I came across brandon university today n they seem to be one of the cheapest and they offer the course i want to study. I'm a student of futa 200l, 3years to go + strikes + irregularities i think i wont loose much having to start over... i really need someone to put me through. pls... thanks. I can be reached through my email: houser.inc@gmail.com johnwisdom10: Please can any one tell me the entry rquirement for underG course in canada? You might want to try the studying in Canada thread where people who want to pursue undergrad/postgrad in Canada post their questions and answers.... https://www.nairaland.com/962116/travelling-canada-part3 |
deniyor: The ontario economy is in the tank right now. Hard to find a job, and two many people fighting for the few jobs left.To clarify, if you are looking for a job in natural resources (eg mining, oil and gas), then Saskatchewan (mining) or Alberta (oil and gas) would probably suit you better. However, Ontario remains by far the largest economy in Canada, by GDP, and the Ontario economy is almost double the size of the next largest, Quebec. Alberta is the 3rd largest; British Columbia is 4th, and Saskatchewan is 5th. The service sector (eg financial services) is very strong in Ontario. It is also the largest manufacturing province. It does have some mining (in Northern Ontario), but not oil and gas. You can have a look at the Statistics Canada website for more information on provincial economies across Canada(eg http://www.statcan.gc.ca/tables-tableaux/sum-som/l01/cst01/econ15-eng.htm). |
mercylicious: Does canny students now need us visa to enta US?Yes, foreign students in Canada do require visas to visit the US. |
cyan2008: hello everyone, i applied for Canadian loteery visa and i was asked to write a touching story as one of requirements. I have good personal stories that i can write and submit. But i am uncomfortable about that as i dont know what the embassy wants to look out for. Has anyone any advice on how to go about it? If u have any personal experience, please share with me. God bless u.Em, there is no such thing as a Canadian visa lottery. Hope you have not paid an agent in respect of your application. If so, please go and get back your money today. If you want to find out about getting to Canada, please go to the official Canadian government immigration website, www.cic.gc.ca. There is also an active thread on travelling to Canada in the travel section. @Richarts, you should go back and double check with your friend as to exactly what he did, because there is no such thing as a Canadian visa lottery. |
morpheus24: Very likely he did not and the aero cust service guy is right. If you are coming from abroad which is what it sounds like, you will need to check your arrival time against the remaining Aero or Arik flights available for that day. The more flights to your destination, the better your chance of booking a flight.Thanks. I actually clicked around on the Arik website and it seems I may be able to book from outside with them, although not with Aero. I will post back if I am successful. |
blackchukky: Yea you could do the booking online and pay using, etranzact,on the counter or via ur mastercard, then call their customer care to give them ur booking reference while, the flight details and booking confirmation would be sent to ur email. It pays to do ur checking-in online, to and print the boardingpass, so as to avoid the large queue at the airport. I hope you wld find this useful cos it worked for me recentlyThanks for the comment. Just to be clear, did you do this from outside the country? I ask because I called aero contractors and they said I needed a naira linked mastercard, which I don't have. The only other option (less preferred) seems to be to book online and ask someone in Nigeria to go and pay at a bank, in order to complete the transaction and actually get the ticket. If there was someway I could just do it all from my computer, that would be ideal. |
Thanks Morpheus. I thought about buying a ticket once I am physically there in Lagos. The only thing is, I will need to fly out that same day as Lagos is not my final destination and I can'tstay there for two/three days, so if there are no seats available that might be a problem. Oh well, thanks anyway. I'll try calling them and see if there's anything they can do ahead of time. |
Has anyone done this successfully? For instance, I'm interested in booking with Aero Contractors from Lagos to Abuja but it seems their online payment options are geared more towards local customers. Any advice/suggestions? |

You could try reaching out to their admissions office via phone or email. |
ayurdavid: hi everyone. pls i really need information on memorial university of newfoundland in canada. i want to apply for the intensive english program and then apply for my masters. is the school a good one? pls help me. thanksWell, the Canadian educational system is structured in such a way that all universities are at more or less the same level, with regards to quality of eductation. Just out of curiousity, though, why the intensive English program? I assume your bachelor's was in English, so how do you explain your going for that program to the embassy? |
soyomoney: Nah..I meant when u applied for visa application in nigeria..what did u do or d steps u tookFYI-- a thread for people (mostly students) applying for Canadian visas... https://www.nairaland.com/962116/travelling-canada-part3 |
Have you checked the Canadian High Commission website? Typically you need to cover at least a year of tuition and living expenses. |
Ahasuerus: I have a degree in microbiology and is still undecided as to what branch to do my masters but will need scholarship to finance my studies. Please how do I go about applying! promise Jane: I just got a txt from +44283301655 inviting me 4 aptitude test at 19 townplanning way ilupeju lagos and its 2morrow , d name of d firm was not mention, who else got dia textWell, did you apply for any jobs recently where the possibility of an aptitude test was mentioned? You could also try reaching out to the number you got the text from. If you do end up going there tomorrow, remember that if anyone asks you to pay money to get a job, it's a scam. All the best. |
AugustApplicant: What I do know is that you can extend your stay for another 3months, do a Certificate course of like 2months in the course of your stay, secure admission to a Diploma program, then come back home to apply for a study visa and use those docs as supporting documents. The conditions will still remain the same. Proof of funds, ties, blabla. Thats the only way I know except you want to do the most stupid thing people do that is seek asylum. My advise Is don't ever do that and don't go and marry oyibo because of paper o.To clarify, you can't study on a visitor visa. |
earthgreeners: But how about the ease of getting off-campus accommodation, as most of the on campus accommodations comes with utilities and affordable meal plans....when the extra costs are calculated, we arrive at almost the same amount with only a slight difference.........thatz what i thinkI think in general a lot of people seem to either do on-campus or homestay when they first arrive and then find their own place after a while. It might be easier to get on-campus accommodation if you're just arriving for the first time (assuming you meet all the housing deadlines, etc) because you don't have to deal with the landlord hassle for off campus housing. Some people do a homestay for a brief period when they arrive, just so they have somewhere to stay for sure, and then find another place within a month or so, as it's easier to find a place once you're physically here. On-campus, you're pretty much stuck with whatever meal plans are available, whereas off campus you can manage your own meals, which some people find less expensive. As well, on-campus, you can easily access student activities, associations, etc, which can help you with adapting and fitting in. Plus you can wake up and be in class in 5 mins, even in your pajamas. |
ndbaba: @ FEMMMY AND IFEGI:WHAT IF I GOT ENOUGH MONEY TO TAKE CARE OF MY TUITION AND LIVING EXPENSES FOR A YEAR, I HEARD D SCHOOL GIVES MONEY TO GRADUATE STUDENTS IN FORM OF A STIPEND FROM YOUR SUPERVISOR. WONT IT B ENOUGH COMBINED WITH ME WORKING 4 FEW HOURS ALSO.I assume you are asking how to support yourself beyond the first year. Well, graduate students are able to get research and/or teaching assistantships, but I would suggest checking with the schools you are interested in to find out how to get those (do you have to apply? Do your grades matter? Or is it just for every graduate student that shows up?) Then you'd have to find out the amount you are likely to get, and compare that to your projected living and tuition expenses. I know that there are quite a few instances where such stipends do not cover everything, but there may be cases where the amount is enough. If the stipend is not going to cover everything, you need to find out the funding gap, i.e., the amount you still need. It may or may not be possible to cover that amount through working; it all depends on how much it is, and whether you can get a job. In other words, you need to do quite a bit of research around the area of finances ahead of time. |
AugustApplicant: I get what you mean but how do you rate it side by side with advance diploma or graduate diploma?Well, typically, for people over here, if someone finished high school (secondary school) and for some reason didn't go to university, they could choose to go college instead and get a diploma. This would not be advanced or post graduate. An advanced diploma might refer to one that gives you more than a basic level of learning in a particular area (ie, you go from a basic diploma in French language studies to an advanced diploma, which means your French language skills are now more advanced, for instance. It's not necessarily a post grad qualification). Or if some random person over here(including university graduates) wanted to get a specific practical or technical skill, they could choose to get a college diploma (or certificate) in that area, again not necessarily post graduate. For someone coming as a foreign student who already has an undergraduate degree, it might make more sense to go for a college diploma that is specifically designated as a postgraduate diploma. |
@stylz:Why don't you try posting this question in the business section? People are always discussing start-up ideas there-- fish farming, raising chickens, haulage business, etc. Someone might be able to give you some good insight. |
henrychubayo: If you are a duel citizen and 9ja is one of them, then you have no worries. The no one rule of immigration in nigeria is never refuse any nigerian entry into nigeria. Whether your passport has expired or you or you had no passport etc, you will be granted entrance into 9ja but know that you must prove it by your language. You need no visa to nigeria. If you are uncertain about these, then come 4 visa on arrival cause you will get it but visas are issued to foreigners note that. Thanks for the info. The only thing I would be concerned about in that scenario is whether you'd be allowed to board the flight in the first place, with an expired passport, and, if you are able to fly into the country, whether you'll have to bribe officials to get through immigration. Anyway, still exploring getting a renewal at the moment. Cheers. |
AugustApplicant: What of college diploma? You get a college diploma by graduating from a college, which is a post-secondary institution (community college) but is distinct and separate from a university. Link to association of Canadian Community Colleges below. http://www.accc.ca/ |
Thanks! |
nakita: i don't understand what track/past experience with Nigerian embassy?.. i thought U ar coming here 4 the first time. you can click on this link portal.immigration.gov.ng for details explaining how to get nigerian visa on arrivalSorry for the confusion. In a nutshell--dual citizen, green passport out of date, uncertain renewal process (e.g., list of requirements includes letter from your local government authority, and there's no way I can get that; fees on the embassy website are different from those on the Nigerian immigration website). Embassy has not been the best to deal with in the past and has been unreachable by phone recently for questions (once there was even a message saying the number was out of service). Given all that, when I heard about the visa on arrival program, it seemed it would cut out a lot of hassle for an impending trip-- if the program was real and working, that is. So I've been asking around about it. Anyway, just got some info a few minutes ago about what seems an easier way to go about renewals, so I'll probably be taking that path. Cheers. |
nakita: Maybe it will be better if you get the visa in america before you arrive, nigerian visa should not be that difficult or takes long to getYeah I am looking into that, but the embassy track record/past experiences dealing with them leaves you weak in the knees sometimes, so I thought the visa on arrival might be an easy way out. Oh well, will keep gathering info. Anyone else with insight, feel free to give a shout. |
ndbaba: hiYou can work but there are certain restrictions, such as needing a permit to work off campus, only being allowed to work a certain number of hours during the semester, etc. As well, note that it is highly, highly unlikely you will earn enough money to pay your international student fees, housing, feeding, etc, just by working, as students don't get paid very much. Here is a link to info on scholarships, grants, etc for international students that might be useful: http://www.scholars4dev.com/category/field-of-study/ If you can't find one for the school you want, perhaps you could go somewhere else and then immigrate to Canada as a permanent resident(easier than from inside Nigeria). As for becoming a permanent resident, you have to immigrate, e.g., as a skilled worker. Immigrating as a skilled worker is on a points based system whereby you get points for languages spoken (English and/or French); education level, etc. Foreign students Check out the Canadian government immigration website for more details: cic.gc.ca. Note that the program is on hold till next year at the moment, to clear the application backlog. There are other ways to become a permanent resident, eg immigrating through marriage, as an investor, etc. You can find all that info on the immigration website. All the best. |
