Nah, you can get married without the so-called fabu wedding!

For many people, marriage is all about the wedding and the title of being "married."

But I'm also aware marriage isn't for everyone.
Yep, the sooner we start accepting that not everyone is meant to get married, the better off we all would be.

If your prime reason for wanting to get married at a young age is "babies," please you would be better off freezing your eggs and waiting for the Mr. Right, than you would be by tying the knot with the wrong guy.

My point exactly! But unfortunately many people think that if they don't follow the "community's definition," then the society sees them as abnormal.

Too bad.

Marriage isn't so much overarated, but it is misunderstood.
I totally agree! the purpose of marriage is grossly misunderstood, and so also is that of having babies.
FamilyRe: Do you ever think Marriage Is Overrated? by Ifez: 9:18pm On Dec 30, 2009
Unfortunately this is the way we have been programmed to think:

Finish school -->  Get Job -->  Get married --> Have babies

Any deviation from the above is seen as abnormal.

The world is changing, and so should the paradigm of life. Believe it or not, not every woman will find a life partner, and even if they do, many of them will marry at a pretty late age.

1. There are more women than men in the world today.
2. More gay men are popping up everywhere.
3. Most guys don't "make money" until they are past their prime.
etc, etc.
PoliticsRe: What Are The Consequences Of The Umar Farouk's Action On Nigeria? by Ifez: 9:11pm On Dec 30, 2009
It's not just foreign passport and visa applications that will be affected.

What about students seeking admission in US colleges? Nigerians operating small businesses in the US? Nigerians seeking for jobs in the US?

All these areas will be equally affected.

Even foreigners with significant investment in Nigeria will pull out. Foreign airlines may stop making Naija connection flights. etc, etc.

Unless this whole thing blows over pretty quickly, we're all in for it. Let's hope no stupid thing like this happens ever again.
EducationRe: Lagos Teachers can't speak English language by Ifez: 12:16am On Dec 19, 2009
Nija4Life:
Instead of the Deputy Gov blaming teachers for the poor education pupils are receiving, I think that blame should be heaped on the door steps of the Government, past or present. The question that should be asked is 'do these teachers pass through a reputable teacher training programme? If so what is the standard of training provided? Does it conform to International standard? If not whose responsibility it is to quality assure the process? How much has the government spent on infrastructure, books, teaching resources, IT etc?' Unforunately in Nigeria we don't do 'taking responsibility', when things ain't working it is somebody's fault. Education is an expensive business anywhere in the world that requires a great commitment in funding and expertise in order to recapture the good standards of the past let alone catch up with the rest of the world.
THANK YOU!!!
EducationRe: Lagos Teachers can't speak English language by Ifez: 12:14am On Dec 19, 2009
“Anywhere I go, I get complaints that our teachers can’t speak English. We should improve and that is why we are here. Our primary school teachers must upgrade their knowledge. Many of them are not doing so.They should work on themselves,” Sosan directed.
Of course, what else do you expect? With the pittance you pay school teachers, who else do you think would want to take on such a job? If teachers go and better themselves, they will quickly take on better jobs in oil companies, banks, etc.
If you want good teachers and great teaching, you should revamp the whole Nigerian educational system.
Just wait till this whole issue get to the higher educational institution level. The current lecturers (ASUU) we have now are getting old. Who do you think will take their place in the future? Aliens? Of course it will be the kids of today that are being taught by these present day non-correct-sentence-writing primary school teachers!

According to her, “lots of pupils are no longer coming to our schools, unlike 10 years ago. The problem is qualitative teaching. We hear that some teachers, especially in Epe, don’t come to school at all. God is watching us.
Please, if you taught in a Govt school in Nigeria during NYSC, raise your hand. What do you think is the main cause of the lackadaisical attitude of the teachers? If you were paid for teaching in the school, every month, and on time, too, please come out now and bear testimony.
Rubbish!
“We are not expecting man to reward us. We need to put the fear of God in everything we do. Whether people are watching us or not, do the right thing. Let people have faith in our schools again.
Please tell that to the Govt and the educational board and minster of education. Let them do their part and provide an attractive compensation for teachers. You will see how many talented and well-learned individuals will flock into the educational system if things are done right.
The teaching job in Nigeria is such that, only those (females especially) who couldn't make their correct papers in WAEC and couldn't get a RICH husband, take on such jobs. Go ahead, do a survey and see if I'm wrong! What are they expecting? That graduates with first class honors will come and sit down in Epe, Nguru, Oturkpo, Kafanchan, Bukuru, Gombe, Abeokuta, Oshogbo, Jebba, Zungeri, etc, and be collecting whatever pittance they pay school teachers these days? Many of them would also be severely mocked by pupils and students for daring to come to class in tattered shirts, patched trousers, and weather-beaten shoes.

They are coming here to use the "Fear of God" on us. How come they don't have the so-called "Fear of God" in their own hearts while carting away all the money designated for education and looting all the school infrastructures and amenities for their own personal gain? Where are all the money, books, computers and classroom furniture donated to Nigerian schools by concerned companies and Student Alumni Organizations? WHERE DID THEY ALL GO?

“If teachers are doing their work, we won’t get bad results. Pupils perform poorly because teachers are not doing what they are supposed to do,” she said, adding that the various education secretaries who were expected to monitor the schools had failed.
BIG LIE!!! It should be: "If Govt is doing its job, we won't get bad teachers and, therefore, won't get bad results." At least she blamed part of it on the educational secretaries.

Believe it or not, students wonder why the really talented teachers teach. they are surprised that such great teachers don't go to find jobs in Engineering Firms and Oil Companies. These good teachers always say they love teaching and would like to give knowledge back to the system that bestowed them with it. But now, those teachers have wizened up. They've realized that no matter how great they are, or how well-intentioned their reason for teaching is, the Govt will not give much of a damn. They only listen when ASUU goes on strike. Many of these teachers have long since departed and gone on to seek better futures in other job sectors.

See the state of our Federal Schools (once unity schools). They are just deplorable.
See the govt schools--primary and secondary alike. Nothing to write home about.
See the state of our Universities. God help us!

In short, this whole thing is too sad and disgraceful to behold! This our country--na wa o!

I seriously pity the future of the next generation kids, because, by the time they get to the University level, the lecturers there will be speaking:
"I doesn't rike what you are does. Prease, shapes up."
FoodRe: Are Nigerians Allergic To Any Food? by Ifez: 3:11pm On Dec 18, 2009
Whoa! Hold on a sec! shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked

Chemical preservation of food is not the cause of Food-borne allergies--that is a whole different episode on its own. Food allergies has nothing to do with chemical preservation.

@ OP, by FOOD ALLERGIES, I presume you mean the major allergies caused by consuming certain types of foods such as:

1. Milk
2. Eggs
3. Peanuts
4. Tree Nuts (Walnuts, Pecans, Almonds)
5. Fish
6. Crustacean shell fish
7. Wheat
8. Soybeans (At type of Legume)

Allergies to the foods listed above are due to "poor immune system development" and not because the processed food may have some chemical additives.

If as a child you are not fed with bosom-milk, or you are weaned to early from your mother's milk, then you may develop food allergies as you grow up. The Immune system of babies is formed from that of mothers through bosom-feeding.

In the West, the reason many of them are prone to food allergies is because they were not bosom-fed as infants. Human milk contains a lot of immune-building hormones, immunoglobins, and proteins. So, those western babies that were fed cow milk (Infant formula) did not get much of these essential hormones, and as a result, they can not properly ingest certain types of proteins in foods which then results to allergies.

African children, on the other hand, are mainly bosom-fed. They develop a good immune system and can consume most of the foods listed above without problem.
If Nigerians should start depending on infant formulas for feeding their babies right from day one, you will start seeing many cases of food allergies popping up in the country.
To be fore-warned is to be fore-armed.

FOOD INTOLERANCE
is something else.
Take Lactose Intolerance for example. It is a disorder that arises as a result of the direct inability to digest the disaccharide lactose (found in milk). While growing up, African children are fed evaporated milk or powdered milk. The heat-treatment used for the processing of these kind of milks have destroyed the lactose, so there is no need for the babies to develop the enzyme that digests lactose. Then, as adults, when they move to Western countries and consume fresh milk, they start having lactose intolerance (diagnosed by too much gas in the large intestine).
You see, fresh milk is not as severely heat-treated as evaporated or powdered milk and, therefore, still retains most of the lactose. That is why many Africans have Lactose Intolerance.

Some people also have intolerance to food chemical additives like: MSG, Phosphates, etc, etc.

FOOD POISONING is in a different category altogether.
This is where the chemical additives you were speaking of earlier may come into play. Some kinds of additives or preservatives used in foods can definitely kill you or damage something in your system. Some of these build up over time and start causing problems at the adult stage.
Some cause cancer, arthritis, rheumatism, kidney-stones, asthma, ulcer, etc, etc.

A major kind of Food Poisoning is the one caused by micro-organisms. If you ingest improperly processed foods infected with deadly microbes, may God be with you.

LiteratureRe: Enid Blyton's Novels by Ifez: 3:42pm On Dec 17, 2009
Seun:
This thread is referenced in an article about Enid Blyton:  Notes from a small island
Here is the paragraph from Seun's link above:

(Written By Amy Rosenberg)
. . . Again, most of Blyton’s readers led, and lead, lives very different from the ones she portrayed. This is particularly true of her legions of readers from former British colonies. In the 1960s and 1970s – just as Blyton’s work was beginning to come under attack in Britain for its casual racism – kids across the faded empire were eagerly discovering Blyton’s superlative vision of childhood. Today, those no-longer kids are happy to testify to the pure joy that vision gave them. Dozens of blogs from India, Pakistan, Australia, the West Indies, Nigeria and elsewhere mention Blyton at great length; others are completely devoted to her legacy, including Up the Faraway Tree, a site run by an Indian woman living in Singapore, and Heather’s Blyton Pages, run by the 27-year-old administrator of a small software company in Australia. Nairaland Forum, a Nigeria-based website, maintains a running Blyton thread full of comments like: “Dame Enid Blyton was the best. I lived to read her.”. . .

saha:
Dame enid blyton was the best,I lived to read her books & credit her with a large percentage of the good readers born in d 70s & 80s.what a writer

FoodRe: Are Nigerians Allergic To Any Food? by Ifez: 12:46pm On Dec 17, 2009
Food allergies arise mainly from poor immune system development as seen with people who were bottle-fed as infants or weaned too early.

In Africa, babies are mainly bosom-fed, some up to 6 months to 2 years. These babies have very strong immune systems and, as a result, are not prone to major food allergies.

The kinds of food disorder that may plague African children are Lactose Intolerance (fresh milk consumption) and Heart Burn (Legume consumption).

Let's list some of the new or unknown authors we've discovered and their books we've read that are quite good. They don't have to be best sellers. Just make sure you've read the book and can honestly recommend it to others.

Leonard Elmore -- Freaky Deaky (He's not entirely new, but he's sort of unknown in our circle. IMHO, his dialogue are unparalleled by any other author I've come across.)

Lisa Scottingdale -- Dirty Blonde

Gigi Levangie Grazer -- The Starter Wife

Lauren Weisberger -- The Devil Wears Prada

Emma Mclaughlin and Nicola Kraus -- The Nanny Diaries

Nona David -- Feddie Girl (A must-read kiss)

Sophie Kinsella -- Confessions of a Shopaholic

Jennifer Weiner -- In Her Shoes

Audrey Niffeneger -- The Time Traveler's Wife

LiteratureRe: Why Do Ladies Like To Read Romance Novels? by Ifez: 11:58pm On Dec 15, 2009
^^ Yeah, most novels have a little bit of romance in them.

However, novels of the Romance Genre can be very cliched and boring. You already know what's gonna happen and many of them follow the same old-and-tired story lines:

-Girl meets handsome man
-Girl loses handsome man due to some misunderstanding (alleged infidelity, secret pregnancy, rejection, etc)
-Girl moves on and somehow her life crosses with that of man again
-Girl tries to resist man but her heart keeps betraying her (she will get kissed many times as punishment from man)
-Then comes the introduction of 'the other woman' who is romantically involved with man
-'The other woman' catches man kissing girl, and makes so much noise that girl has to plan a hasty exit
-Finally, girl and man realize how much they love each other and get back together (they then profess their undying love)

For once, I'd like to see a romance novel where the heroine isn't a WIMP and where she actually REJECTS the guy for good and NEVER gets back together with him (Just like in "A Woman of Substance" but this isn't really a romance novel).

Also, is it too much to ask that, just this once, the hero and heroine should be separated by death? Kill one off and let the other spend the rest of his/her whole life mourning in regret. Lol!  tongue

Life is more often than not a bed of thorns, so romance writers should stop deceiving "small girls."  lipsrsealed
LiteratureRe: Those Who Love Novels by Ifez: 11:47pm On Dec 15, 2009
I love reading and I've read loads of novels from different authors.

Basically, if I like a novel by an author, I go back and get all the novels written by that author. Lol!

Well, I did this for Grisham and discovered his "A Painted House"; "Playing for Pizza"; and "The Innocent Man" aren't good enough to be Grisham works -- so disappointing  cry

Same goes for JK Rowling. If you love "The Harry Potter series", please do yourself a favor and not go looking for her earlier works.  lipsrsealed

LiteratureIs The Need For Books Becoming Extinct? by Ifez(op): 9:51pm On Dec 15, 2009
When we were kids, our parents made sure we read different kinds of books: Textbooks, Storybooks, Leisure books, Magazines, Comics, etc, etc. We came out better for it, both in speaking & writing, gaining far-and-wide knowledge, and improvement in general communication skills.

Now, as adults, do we make our kids read books, or do we let them dull their minds with too much watching of movies and playing video games? What kind of future will face kids who don't read?

There is a belief the world would get progressively dumber because of general lack of reading. Based on this, First and Second World countries are trying to make their children read more books. Are Nigerians doing the same?

Instead of improving, the book industry in Nigeria has become worse and may even degenerate further.

Is the future of our kids in trouble?

What do you think?
