thoth: i am not in education per se but i am planning of organizing a group to tour universities and communities and give talks and share books throught the southeast next i come back. There are many books that people needs to read and many writings like this that could be organized and put as a small booklet and shared that would awaken people to ask questions and see things differently. Books on Neo-colonialism by Nkurumah, books on african economic studies by Mr Rhodney and many books which i believe are small sized enough to be reproduced cheaply. I also plan to get writings like the ones above and compile them into pamphlets and distribute as well.
You can teach people what you know and encourage them to teach others. Last time i met a young man that gave a very good talk on african history and effects of being a puppet state to a large crowd in a cyber cafe and i am amazed at how such a little effort can bring change and curiousity in people.

Right now I am in uni in America. Can you pass along any information that you have to me. I am part of the African grou at my school. I would love to help spread knowledge. I already know a lot but I would love to learn more. Do you have a facebook page for this movement? Maybe we can start one. The conscious African movement.

What sector are you in? Are you in education? I am very interested in school curriculum and education from nursery to secondary. I am in economics at the moment but I'm interested in education because it plays a role on the economy. Is there anyway I can help you uplift fellow Africans as well?

I agree with you. Right now I am abroad but I plan to move to Africa in the not so distant future to do business. I also want to build museums and schools that are afrocentric to uplift africans..

There needs to be Afrocentric schools wherever blacks are. Even schools in Africa are Eurocentric so we need to change the curriculum for our children. They need to know of the great empires of Africa and how to uplift Africa. The kids should be taught about Egypt, Carthage, Phoenicians, Zulu, Songhai, Benin, Mali, Igbo, Yoruba, Bornu, Hausa, Kongo, Luba, Kuba, Swahili, Ethiopia,Moors, Monomotopia,Africans around the world and other great empires. This will give Africans a strong identity to Africa. Also, these schools should teach African languages so our languages don't die. I am thinking of opening up Afrocentric schools and museums in the future. This will give blacks a strong pride for being African and reduce the self hate that we have amongst each other.

Books in schools should be by Ivan Sertima, Runoko Rashidi, Anta Diop, Drusilla Houston, Basil Davidson, Martin Bernal, and other authors who aren't biased.

Meanwhile, we have to expand our horizon. One thing you should look into is Green economy initiatives and how it can contribute to the development of the economy in Nigeria and Africa.

I have been traveling state to state doing research on the potentials of these states and also the damages that are being done by traditional companies.

In my initial study before the boko haram saga went haywire, I collected that Northern Nigerians which was where I started off holds potential. I shall keep you updated on my findings and also thinking of setting up a platform where Entrepreneurship will be the main focus for Youths and other serious minded Nigerians who will make use of it.

Europeans spent centuries butchering each other, before they even looked in Africa's direction. In fact, they even spent time fighting each other for Africa's resources.
And China? Yes, they invented gunpowder, but why could they not stop the same Europeans from invading their lands? Or Japanese?
Shaka Zulu only beat the British in a single battle. If he was whooping the Europeans, of course we'd be reading a different history.

It would be absurd for people to assume that the problem of Africa is religion. Even the whites have kicked religion aside. Plus, religions like Islam and Christianity were not brought by colonialists to Africa exclusively. The Ethiopians you speak of so glowingly are the first community in the whole world to adopt Christianity as their state religion. Many modern West Africans are migrants from the Middle East, despite their Negro hues. Sub-Saharan Africans largely adopted Islam as a result of trade, and not colonization.

Anyway, in my opinion, Africa is behind primarily because of the failure of Africans to adapt to the changing world, and create a focus for themselves. We have been independent for half a century, yet we remain perpetually in servitude, not only to the West, but now the East (Middle East and Asia). The Asians also experienced colonization, but they have adapted, and they've taken charge of their own destinies. What we need to do as a people is to become more productive. That includes you yourself. Become productive, contribute to Africa's development instead of chasing pounds and dollars abroad. That is the sacrifice I am yet to see Africans make. Rather we all flee abroad and cry about no NEPA, no skyscrapers, and no trains. Or we put some 'Africanist' garb on, and skulk around meeting halls and colleges abroad, crying about racism and colonization. That's not productive.

Stay in Africa, no matter how unpleasant or uncomfortable it is, and contribute to its development. Work hard, and make your presence felt. Contribute to the strengthening of its institutions, rather than staying thousands of miles away and crying corruption. That is all that is required. Even if you find yourself abroad, channel the resources and know-how you are gathering towards the development of your people back home. Most successful Africans I know who live abroad spend most of their resources trying to compete with the white man, buying million-dollar homes in exclusive white neighbourhoods and buying top of the range automobiles. These are resources that need to be channeled back home, to develop your communities back home.

I had a conversation last week with someone at an airport in Nigeria. Due to our domestic flight being delayed for some hours, he was quite bitter, and took the opportunity to vent about the country and its failings. One of his angry assertions was 'Half of Nigerian children are not in school!'. My response was 'Quite, but let's thank God that we have the other half in school. Once we improve the lot of that half, things will surely be better in th future.'. That is how most of us see Africa. We spent a lot of time ranting about what we don't have, while refusing to focus on the things we do have. Let's adjust our attitude, and start to focus on positivity and growth, and see how things change around us.

A lot of my money that I have I spend it on products made in Africa. I have a lot of African clothe, goods, art, and I also spend money in black owned businesses. I am trying to have millions of Africans (blacks) do the same thing. If we can all do this then jobs will be created at home. Money needs to be spend in our community so the economic multiplier effect can turn that dollar into 100 dollars and create jobs, reduce crime and eradicate poverty.

I can find myself in the middle of a village of another tribe and won't be beaten to death because of where i come from. There is a high possibility that you could be crippled by venturing into an Italian village or some crackers town because you look different.

You don't know what that young man is going through. I was priviledged to had first hand contact with Africans who had undergone immense suffering at the hands of bad policies on their respective countries. I met a lot of congolose at patrice lumumba university in moscow. A lot of them are orphans and so many horrible stories will make you cringe. During a brief stay in Egypt, my landlord was a very dark native Egyptian; one of the nicest person i have ever met. It is not uncommon to hear Arabs who now dominate Egypt to refer to black africans as slaves and use derogatory terms like monkeys to my face. In one occasion, I confronted them and told them to cross the Red Sea back to Arabia where they came from. It was as if a big rock fell on their heads. I refer to them as Settler Arabs and call the native blacks, real Egyptians. Since then, if the Arabs saw us passing, they hide their faces in shame. The funniest thing is that our black african muslim brothers who travel there for Islamic education are ridiculed and looked down upon by their arab masters.

What i am trying to say in essence is that experiences and reading of books relating to ones history and to a larger extent other people's history will rudely awaken their consciouness and make other races respect them and give them their space.

Our people don't know that the earliest church is Orthodox and their images of Jesus, his disciples and Mary are dark brown. This is the Church Ethopians attend. Even Egyptian European christians - descendants of the Greek invaders of ancient Egypt attend this church too till today.

No no, our people prefer bleaching their skin and exalting their colonial masters to earn glory. They prefer buying unrealistic books that promises them riches within twenty four hours.

We will continue to spread the message, but sometimes it can be very frustrating.
