Foreign AffairsPfizer Ends All Investments To Russia. Donates Russian Profits To Ukraine by Igbofam(op): 1:58pm On Mar 14, 2022
March 14, 2022 8:44 am ET

Pfizer said it will end all planned investments with Russian local suppliers in response to the conflict in Ukraine, the drug maker said Monday.

Pfizer will, however, continue to supply medicine to Russia but will donate all its profits from its Russian subsidiary to causes that provide direct humanitarian support to the people of Ukraine.

“Pfizer concluded that a voluntary pause in the flow of our medicines to Russia would be in direct violation of our foundational principle of putting patients first,” the company said in a statement.

Medicines were excluded from the sweeping sanctions the U.S. and its allies have placed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

The company said it would also refrain from starting new clinical trials or recruiting new patients in Russia, and work to transition ongoing trials to alternative sites outside Russia.

Shares of Pfizer were up 0.7% to $50.62 in premarket trading Monday. Earlier Monday, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said a fourth Covid-19 vaccine dose was necessary and that the company was working on a shot that protected against all variants for at least a year.

Foreign AffairsRe: Bridgestone Suspending Tire Production and all Capital Investment in Russia by Igbofam(op): 12:39pm On Mar 14, 2022
The terrible thing about all these companies pulling out of Russia is that their own citizens would hardly know what is going on even though they would deeply feel the heat. Their state controlled media would never tell them the truth

Imagine having over 300 major companies pulling out of your country in 2 weeks. The impact on the economy would be like a Tsunami of financial crisis which is what they are facing now.

Funny enough the worst is yet to come as more companies pull out over the next coming days and weeks.
Foreign AffairsBridgestone Suspending Tire Production and all Capital Investment in Russia by Igbofam(op): 12:33pm On Mar 14, 2022
Tokyo – Bridgestone Corp. is suspending the production of tires in Russia and halting exports to the country in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In a statement 14 March, the group said it was ceasing production at the passenger car tire plant in Ulyanovsk, Russia, by 18 March.

The group will also freeze any new capital investment at the facility while halting exports of tires to Russia immediately.

Bridgestone said it was “concerned about the current situation in Ukraine” and that it hoped that peace would be restored in the country ‘as soon as possible’.

The Japanese group said it had donated €2.5 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

Located in the Zavolzhye industrial park and spanning 80.6 hectares, the Ulyanovsk facility was officially launched in December 2016.

As of December 2021, the plant had rolled out 5 million tires and employed over 1000 people.

According to Bridgestone, the plant is "one of the most advanced among all Bridgestone enterprises in the world."

Product portfolio includes tires with standard sizes ranging from 13 to 19 inches - for cars, crossovers and SUVs, as well as tires homologated for supply to automakers as original equipment.

Bridgestone said the Russian operation contributes 2% of the group's total annual revenue..

At the last count, over 300 international companies have withdrawn from Russia or suspended operations there over the past few weeks. On the automotive front, the list (a most extensive one can be found here, but also over at the Yale School of Management) is extremely long and includes Aston Martin, Bentley, Daimler, Ferrari, Ford, GM, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Hyundai, Iveco, Magna, Mazda, Nissan, Renault, Rolls-Royce, Uber, and Volkswagen.

Not only car and motorcycle makers, but other companies in the industry have pulled out as well, and even Formula 1 did the same. Until this past weekend, a few, including Bosch, Bridgestone and Pirelli, stood their ground, but are beginning to fold to the pressure as well.

This does not mean anything because people are still using diesel vehicles. Why don't they just close down all filling stations? After publishing the article which you posted as fact, why did they not publish that filling stations are already closing up? Because according to them the purchase of electric cars by their citizens have supplanted that of diesel vehicles. Besides did they do a car census in each city or did the electric car companies supply them with their sales records?
You are clearly not a smart cookie.

First you tried to refute my assertion that EV sales surpassed diesel vehicle sales and when you are shown facts you switch goalposts by saying people are still buying diesel vehicles.

DID YOU NOT GO TO SCHOOL?

What I said was that EV sales SURPASSED sale of diesel vehicles and not that the sale of diesel vehicles have stopped!

Every Car manufacturer publishes their sales data at certain points as this would help build up investor confidence and sustain or improve their stock prices since they are all publicly traded.

Asking how they were supplied with their sales records in this time and age of the 21st century simply shows YOU ARE INDEED NOT A SMART COOKIE

EU shutting down oil purchase from Russia by 2022 doesn't mean that they won't still rely on Russian allies like Venezuela and Saudi for oil. I read that the Arabians are not willing to pander to the drum beats of the west. Also India will not stop its oil purchase for a very long time even if they have 3 billion electric buses. I don't believe that sale of evs has taken over diesel vehicles. Many sport cars still use fuel, aeroplanes use fuel, many factories need fuel for production, a lot of houses still need for fuel for heating.
One thing I am very good at is information acquisition because I read up on anything and everything.

Attached is the answer and proof to your comment in bold. If I am right with that then I am right with the rest because right now you are clearly not speaking factually but merely speculating while I speak undiluted facts

EU is an example of surface level unification, there is a lot going on beneath that we don't know . Each country fights for its own interest. Talking about clean energy, it is going to take a lot of years to perfect it, a lot of machineries still require oil to function. It is going to take decades for them to achieve that goal.
Sales of EVs as at 2021 overtook sales of diesel vehicles.

India is working on acquiring 3million Electric buses by 2024

USA has signed the bill for 500,000 Electric charging stations across the country (this means a massive push away from fossil driven vehicles by end of 2025)

EU is shutting down Oil purchase from Russia by end of 2022.

I know it did but this time around the west will feel the heat too, there is no clear winner in this conflict. Even though it might be said that Russia is in a deep financial mess presently we can't conclusively say that this will be the downfall of the country.
The level of unification of Europe and other nations against Russia is unprecedented. This will be their downfall. The west will not suffer that much in the face of cleaner and alternative sources of energy. Already the world is aggressively moving away from Fossil fuels so Russia would eventually have to drink their oil and puff their gas

Is Russia really a democratic country?... Sometimes we need to double-check it again to be sure.... Because it sounds like a country ruled by the military...

Is the citizens actually in support of what is going on... All the travel ban imposed on them by most countries, freezing of international accounts/closing of corporation... social media etc... Do they really like that?....

If they don't like it and the country is truly a democratic country, what is stopping them from speaking up to defend their country from economic/ financial collapse.. Just wondering.. embarassed

There is no democracy in Russia. They have a dictatorial government. Putin is supposed to be in power for 6 yrs but had now ammended their constitution in In mid-January. He submitted proposals for amendments to the constitution and formed a working group to refine the legislation. On March 10, a Russian Duma deputy proposed an amendment that would reset Putin’s presidential term limit clock to zero. A move that would allow him to run for office in 2024 and 2030, and potentially remain in office through 2036. Within a week, Russia’s parliament and regional governments ratified the amendments and the Constitutional Court approved the changes. The popular referendum is now the next step.

Putin is doing everything to coerce and intimidate everyone to do his bidding and to enable him remain in power till 2036 (if he would still be alive by then)
Christianity EtcRussian Orthodox Church In Amsterdam Announces Split With Moscow Due To Ukraine. by Igbofam(op): 7:53am On Mar 14, 2022
A Russian Orthodox church in Amsterdam has announced it is to split with the Moscow patriarchate, in the first known instance of a western-based church cutting ties over the invasion of Ukraine.

“The clergy unanimously announced that it is no longer possible for them to function within the Moscow patriarchate and provide a spiritually safe environment for our faithful,” the clergy said in a statement posted on its website. “This decision is extremely painful and difficult for all concerned.”

The head of the Russian Orthodox church, Patriarch Kirill, a trusted ally of Vladimir Putin, has declined to condemn the Kremlin’s decision to invade its neighbour, referring to Russia’s opponents in Ukraine as “evil forces”. In a Sunday sermon last week he also said gay pride parades organised in the west were part of the reason for the war in Ukraine.

The statement said the Russian Orthodox parish of Saint Nicholas of Myra had asked the Russian archbishop of the diocese of the Netherlands, who is based in The Hague, to grant the church “canonical dismissal”.

The clergy of the parish said they had requested to join the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Istanbul-based Orthodox branch, seen as a rival to the Russian Orthodox church.

Kirill’s position on the war has led to unease among some Russian Orthodox priests who object to the invasion of a country often referred to as a “brotherly nation” in religious circles.

More than 280 Russian Orthodox priests and church officials from around the world signed an open letter expressing their opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It said “eternal torment” awaited those who gave “murderous orders”.

The Russian Orthodox church in Amsterdam, which consists of four priests and a deacon – one of the biggest Russian Orthodox congregations in the Netherlands – has been critical of Russia’s role in the war since the start of the invasion on 24 February.

It said last week it would no longer mention the name of Patriarch Kirill in its liturgy because of his backing for the invasion of Ukraine. “We as the clergy of St Nicholas parish in Amsterdam have expressed our shock at the invasion of Ukraine by the armed forces of the Russian Federation … We distance ourselves from Patriarch Kirill’s narrative,” it wrote on its Facebook page.

The statement went against the official policy of the Russian Orthodox church not to use the word “war” and “invasion” to describe Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

The Russian priests in Amsterdam told the Dutch outlet ND that Archbishop Elisey of the Netherlands visited their church afterwards, warning that “Moscow was watching their actions closely”.

The Amsterdam church held a closed session on Sunday in which the head of the parish reiterated the decision to break with Moscow. “We asked our former Patriarch Kirill to stop the war. Unfortunately, this did not happen,” he said in a video address posted on the church’s YouTube page.

A Russian member of the church’s choir who was standing outside the church told the Guardian she supported the decision to separate from Moscow. “Once the war started, there was only one way out of this,” she said, asking not to give her name.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has also been criticised by other Christian religious leaders, including the head of Patriarchate of Constantinople, Bartholomew I of Constantinople, and Pope Francis, who on Sunday issued his toughest condemnation yet of the invasion, saying the “unacceptable armed aggression” must stop.

Bartholomew, considered to be the spiritual leader of the world’s Eastern Orthodox Christians, earlier said Putin had committed “a great injustice” by going to war against his “coreligionists” and had “earned the hatred of the whole world”.

In 2018 the Russian Orthodox church cut ties with the Patriarchate of Constantinople, seen as the spiritual authority of the world’s Orthodox Christians, after Bartholomew granted independence to the Ukrainian Orthodox church, which was previously under Moscow’s control.

Foreign AffairsRussia Asks China For Military Assistance In Its Invasion Of Ukraine by Igbofam(op): 9:37pm On Mar 13, 2022
Russia has asked China for military equipment to support its invasion of Ukraine, sparking concern in the White House that Beijing may undermine western efforts to help Ukrainian forces defend their country.

US officials told the Financial Times that Russia had requested military equipment and other assistance since the start of the invasion. They declined to give details about what materiel Russia had requested.

Another person familiar with the situation said the US was preparing to warn allies about the situation amid some indications that China may be preparing to help Russia. Other US officials have also said there were signs that Russia was running out of some kinds of weaponry as the war in Ukraine approaches the start of its third week.

The White House did not comment. The Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for a comment.

The revelation comes as Jake Sullivan, US national security adviser, heads to Rome for talks on Monday with Yang Jiechi, China’s top foreign policy official. People familiar with the situation said Sullivan would sternly warn China that any efforts to help Russia prosecute the invasion or avoid western sanctions would have consequences.

Before leaving Washington on Sunday, Sullivan warned China not to try to “bail out” Russia by helping Moscow to circumvent the sanctions that the US and its allies have imposed on Putin and his regime.

“We will ensure that neither China, nor anyone else, can compensate Russia for these losses,” Sullivan told NBC television on Sunday. “In terms of the specific means of doing that, again, I’m not going to lay all of that out in public, but we will communicate that privately to China, as we have already done and will continue to do.”

The request for equipment and other kinds of unspecified military assistance comes as the Russian military struggles to make as much progress in Ukraine as western intelligence believe they expected.

It also raises fresh questions about the China-Russia relationship, which has grown increasingly strong as both countries express their opposition to the US over everything from Nato to sanctions.

China has portrayed itself as a neutral actor in the Ukraine crisis and has refused to condemn Russia for invading the country. The US has also seen no sign that Chinese president Xi Jinping is willing to put any pressure on Vladimir Putin, his Russian counterpart.

The two leaders signed a joint statement in Beijing last month describing the Beijing-Moscow partnership as having “no limits”, in another sign that the two capitals were drawing even closer together.
