Health › New Method Of Treating Cancer Discovered In Nigeria by igbsam(op): 1:54pm On Sep 26, 2012
The President of the African University of Science and Technology (AUST ), Abuja, Professor Wole Soboyejo, has disclosed that research in new methods for the treatment of cancer has reached an advanced stage, compared to the treatment of the disease through chemotherapy.

Soboyejo unveiled this yesterday at the opening ceremony of a five-day workshop on Nanomedicine and Bio-Micro-Electrical Systems (BIOMEMS) organised by the Federal University of Technology, Minna in collaboration with AUST.

The new method of treatment would give room for early detection.

According to him, the new method of treatment will have little or no side effect on the patients, adding that unlike chemotherapy, the medicine is selective, saying when administered, it goes direct to the region of the disease unlike the present form of treatment which must go through all the blood vessels before attacking the area of the disease.

He added that the new method is cost effective as patients need not take large number of dosages of the medicine before it could go round the body to have impact on the affected part.

According to him, research for the new treatment had started eight years ago and had proven to be effective after testing it on animals adding that it would soon be tested on human beings.

He however said administering the new treatment has to be through injection.

He added that the workshop was conducted with the aim of bringing the young scholars and scientists on board for their contribution for research work on BIOMEMS.
Crime › Lagos Sunday Robbery: Suspects Open Up, Make Shocking Revelations by igbsam(op): 1:32pm On Sep 26, 2012
OPERATIVES of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad have arrested two persons for their alleged connivance in the massive robbery attacks two Sundays ago in Lagos, which left three policemen and some civilians dead, with several others wounded. A one-year-old baby was also hit by bullets during their dare-devil operation which lasted for hours.

Recovered from the gang’s hideout somewhere around Agege area of Lagos, was one of the vehicles reportedly used in the operation, two AK 47 riffles and two magazines loaded with two hundred ammunition.

The duo of Rasheed Suleimon and Kaseem Enifolabi, according to Lagos State Police Command spokes person, Ngozi Braide, while parading them along side other suspected members of different robbery gangs that have been on the command’s wanted list, were arrested in Dopemu and Oshodi areas of the state by operatives from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja.

One of the suspects She said the suspects confessed knowing members of the gang that operated two weeks ago but insisted they did not take part in the operation, adding: “During investigation one of the suspects took the operatives to the gang’s hideout at Wahabi Street in Agege area of the state where one of their operational vehicles, a Honda civic, was recovered with two AK 47 riffles and four magazines with two hundred ammunition.”

She explained that the robbers were able to escape that day because the Police were mindful of civilian casualties. Braide said: “The robbers shot sporadically, but with the way we were trained, we are not supposed to shoot anyhow, particularly in the crowd. It will be better to allow robbers to go free than killing innocent people because the Police will always arrest them someday.”

One of the suspects, 21-year-old Rasheed Sulaimon, who hails from Kwara State, claimed he knew the leader of the gang, even as he disclosed that a female was among the robbers who terrorized Lagos that fateful day.

Hear him: Yes, I know the leader of the gang that operated in Lagos two weeks ago. They did not tell me they were going to rob. But after the robbery, one of them known as Yemi boss called me the next day and said they struck the previous day and killed some policemen.

“He later sent me N3,000 recharge card warning me not to tell any soul, or he would kill me. There was a woman among the gang. And they usually operated in both military and police uniform. I knew Yemi boss at a drinking joint in Akerele area of Sango from where we became friends.”

Arrested kidnap suspects
In another development, the Police in Lagos, last week, smashed another gang which specializes in kidnapping eminent personalities in Lagos. The police arrested three suspected members of the gang who confessed to have kidnapped two staff of Dangote group and an Indian man recently. Three suspected members of the kidnap-gang whose target are the rich and influential were paraded by the police.

The trio of Pius Uba Livinus, 25, Kelerchukwu Onyeman, 27, and Ayebe Segun, 32, told a bewildered crowd that they were responsible for the kidnap of two staff of Dangote Group of Companies on September 2 and 17, 2012 . One of them, Pius Livinus, who said his father was dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force 17 years ago, disclosed that the sum of N32 million was collected as ransom for the release of one of their victims.

Conspiracy and kidnapping
Livinus was discovered to have been arrested and charged to Magistrate Court 17, PWD, Ikeja for conspiracy and kidnapping in April 2012, but was released two months later, before he allegedly perpetrated Yahaya’s kidnap.

Livinus told reporters that his gang’s operational method includes storming prominent clubs in Ikoyi and other highbrow areas, from where they would kidnap fun seekers while leaving the club.

He confessed to have taken part in three kidnap cases, noting: “The first one was successful. It involved an Indian man, in Victoria Island. Four of us were involved. At the end of the day, N32 million was paid as ransom out of which I got N5 million.

“The second one was not successful because I was arrested and charged to court but managed to find my way out.” The 25-year-old Secondary School Certificate holder from Isiala-Ngwa North, Abia state said he used part of his share to buy a plot of land in Lekki.

And in obodo oyinbo land, if you want to witness your wife giving birth, you would be allowed into the theatre and by doing so, you have to put on the doctor's uniform. Some hospitals here in Nigeria do it too. That is, if you get the mind to watch your wife going through that pain of labour. Some husbands even go as far as taking pictures and video recording.

President Jonathan had agreed with the resolution of both chambers of the National Assembly to put the controversial currency restructuring on hold, saying the approval given for it could be reversed, if it was the wish of Nigerians.

I wish this were true, I wont be surprised if at the wake of October 1st, he comes out on national tv to announce that the currency is already in circulation and all nigerian has no choice but to spend it. Just the way he did during the Subsidy Regime. He plays cool at first, and then all of a sudden goes berserk enforcing the military tactics on Nigerians. He once agreed to put a hold on the fuel price last year and then on January 1st, he gave us the gift of N97 per litre. I still dey look sha! Why didn't he listen to us when we said we didn't want him to increase the price of fuel ?

Romance › TRUE CONFESSION: She Doesn't Know Who The Father Of Her Baby Is. by igbsam(op): 10:17am On Sep 18, 2012
Here's a confession of someone who needs help. Kindly help give her advise on how to go about it.

People should not judge me but help me understand what I’ve gotten myself into and how to come out of these complications. Pls I can’t disclose my name for obvious reasons.

Let me just go straight to the point. I’m a good wife to my husband and he loves me too. We are both sex freaks, sometimes we even make love in the kitchen while am cooking since we live alone. That’s how sweet our marriage was. But not any more.

Over four years into our union no “evidence” and pressures from my family and his were getting unbearable so I took to a colleague’s advice. I started dating a young guy but this guy always insist on using condom on me, claiming he can only have direct sex with a woman that is ready to get pregnant for him.

I told him I was ready and we started doing skin-to-skin for about three (3) months before my husband finally called me one weekend. Meanwhile, I didn’t know my colleague has told this my boyfriend some things about my personal life, especially my husband’s “inability” to impregnate me.

Back to my husband: he called me and said he was ready for us to go see a doctor so we could know what is wrong as I had earlier suggested. I was happy because it would help us get medical help if something was actually wrong with either of us.

But I got much more than I bargained for when the doctor came back with the results of the tests that were carried out on us. He said my husband and I are perfectly ok and even congratulated my husband. Congratulation for what? I asked the doctor.

He said my husband has done it, I was already six weeks pregnant! I was filled with joy and my husband too. We celebrated the good news with several rounds of passionate sex when we got home that day. I’m now five months heavy.

I’ve stopped seeing my boyfriend and also resigned from work. Somehow my colleague told this guy I was pregnant and he came looking for me in our house. He said I ran away with his pregnancy, bla bla bla, saying I should do the honourable thing and give him his baby after the baby is delivered. Since that day, I’ve not been myself.

He now calls me almost every afternoon to ask how my baby is doing and other rubbish. My husband is beginning to suspect that something is bothering me but I’ve been taking care of his side. However, my BIG problem is this guy. I don’t think he’s the owner of my pregnancy.

After all, the doctor said nothing is wrong with my husband and I believe my husband actually got me pregnant but I can’t tell him about this guy, it will destroy our marriage.

I need people’s advise on how to handle this guy once and for all. Please help me!!!!

Politics › Re: Soldiers Open Fire To Disperse Jos Protesters by igbsam(m): 10:43pm On Sep 14, 2012
dazey: JOS, Nigeria (AP) — Soldiers opened fire Friday to drive away young Muslims in central Nigeria protesting a film critical of the Prophet Muhammad, witnesses and authorities said, as demonstrators elsewhere in the county's Muslim north burned a U.S. flag.

The demonstrations in Jos, a city where hundreds have been killed in religious and ethnic violence, began after Friday prayers, witnesses said. Soldiers in the city, who have been on guard there since violence in 2010, followed after the youths, witnesses said.

The youths, some wearing white shirts that read "To Hell With America, To Hell With Israel," chanted slogans and called for the arrest of the makers of the film that has sparked protests across the Middle East and North Africa.

As the youths grew angry, soldiers fired assault rifles into the air to drive them away, said Capt. Mustapha Salisu, a spokesman for the military command in Jos. The soldiers dispersed the youths as demonstrations have been largely banned in the city since the violence, said Salisu.

It was not clear whether anyone was injured in the gunfire or the melee.

Jos, in Nigeria's fertile middle belt, straddles the country's predominantly Muslim north and Christian south. Jos and the surrounding Plateau state have been torn apart in recent years by violence pitting its different ethnic groups and major religions against each other. While divided by religion, politics and economics often fuel the fighting. In 2010, at least 1,000 people were killed in violence in Jos and surrounding regions, Human Rights Watch has said.

Meanwhile, protesters also entered the streets in Sokoto, a city in Nigeria's northwest that is nation's the spiritual home for Islam. Several demonstrations saw hundreds on the street, as protesters burned a U.S. flag.

"Time has come when the world should respect Islam as religion, because Muslims respect other people's religion," protester Abubakar Ahmed Rijia said.

Another protester, Nai'u Muhammed, said he believed people were deliberately trying to instigate Muslims into violence through criticizing the Prophet Muhammad.

"Islam is a religion of peace, but we cannot tolerate somebody abusing it," Muhammed said.

The protests in Nigeria and elsewhere in the world focused on a movie, called "Innocence of Muslims," which ridicules the Prophet Muhammad by portraying him as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester. Muslims find it offensive to depict Muhammad in any fashion, much less in an insulting way.

In Nigeria, where the two faiths live and work together, as well as intermarry, there wasn't immediate, overwhelming outrage like what swept other nations. However, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, and the U.S. Consulate in Lagos closed early Friday. Nigeria's top police official also ordered increased security at foreign embassies in the country.

Nigeria also faces ever-increasing violent attacks from a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, which is blamed for killing more than 670 people this year alone, according to a count by The Associated Press.

In Maiduguri, the sect's spiritual home, the streets were quiet Friday. Abubakar Mustapha, an imam and head of the local university's Islamic Studies department, called on Muslims to be restrained in their actions, no matter how angry they may feel over the film.

"How can we earn the respect of others when we as Muslims kill ourselves, when we do things that smear the name of our religion?" Mustapha asked while holding prayers Friday. "We have to go back to the basic and hold firm unto our religion with love and true devotion so that others will respect our religion and our prophet."

Associated Press writers Murtala Faruk in Sokoto, Nigeria; Haruna Umar in Maiduguri, Nigeria; and Jon Gambrell in Lagos, Nigeria, contributed to this report.

The Bolded part is a true muslim man speaking. As a matter of fact, Some People will continue to make jest of muslims and their religion, cos dey derive pleasure in their violence. They need to wake up from all this their violence ways and practice what they preach "Religion of Peace" As far as i can see, its a religion of disaster and violence.
