jerseyboy: Jonathan was mediocre at best. He was a weak and indecisive leader. So much so that he can hardly get credit for the few good things he accomplished. It was easy for any person given to uncompromising standards to not like Jonathan. But then elections are about choices. And given not much of a choice between Jonathan and Buhari anyone with the love of civil liberties would have held their nose and supported Jonathan.
There is a Yoruba saying that even when we are crying we must still be seeing.
I could understand the generation that came of age after Hausa-Fulani military rule not having experienced the complete subjugation of other Nigerians to second class citizenship. But Soyinka's generation witnessed the conquest and effects first hand.
Obasanjo's greatest achievement as president was the neutralization of some of the institutionalized 'privileges' the military had built for the Hausa-Fulani oligarchs. This first grabbed my attention when during his regime when at a Nigerian Embassy I over heard a conversation between two northerners complaining bitterly how the unimaginable is happening at the villa as Yoruba language is being spoken in the corridors of power at Aso Rock Villa. Hither to Hausa had become the semi official language of the military and of government. By insisting on merit on many things Obasanjo began a roll back than at the end of his tenure he was the most hated Nigeria by the Hausa-Fulanis.
On a last note for those who say 'if they don't perform we will vote them out in 2019 just as we did Jonathan' you are on a long road. Obasanjo who was brought in by the north because theytrusted him having been at their beck and call as military head of state became their biggest regret the second time around. The more time removed them from direct power at the center the more desperate they got. Jonathan became a nightmare for them. They imagined as an Ijaw man he could announce one day that Nigeria was dissolved. Now that they are back in charge they will never give that power away again. Power is from God. No man is sure of being alive in the next second. |

While I will support anyone to criticize and urge the govt to act very swiftly against the terrorists called Fulani herdsmen, this reality is the more reason to support the govt in its bid to establish controlled ranches across Nigeria.
Chest-beating and bragging (just like the guy below) that these terrorists will be dealt with should they come to carry out their act of terrorism of maiming and killing innocent citizens will not solve any problem but instead worsen it. They are terrorists and you bragging to face them are not. So, who wins?
The herdsmen, from time immemorial, have been known to be violent and act irrationally. The only difference now is the advent of social media and better news coverage. While growing up, I could recollect some of their atrocities I witnessed. You have fallen in their trap. That is their game plan. To force you to accept the grazing reserves concept. |

fiizznation: People have to be careful. If you think you are dealing with the average Nigeria fulani/fulfude group then you people should better wake up. I'm a Fulani man and I know what I'm talking about. These herdsmen carrying out all these atrocities are dangerous herdsmen from other Africa countries e.g chad, Niger, Sierra Leone, Gambia, guinea, Senegal, Mali etc. Normally they rarely attack any community until they are attacked first and they don't understand anything called fair play. They have a very wide network that cuts across the entire African continent.
My problem with the hypocritical Nigeria media houses is they hardly report any killings of these herdsmen by the local community, but the herdsmen reprisal attacks are always reported. To me this is insensitivity. We all know how innocent Nigeria herdsmen are killed everyday by the locals, but nobody wants to talk about that. The agatu people killed many innocent Fulani herdsmen before the herdsmen reprisal attacks, but how many media houses reported that? All we were hearing was Fulani ransacked agatu community.
People should be careful, if you think these herdsmen don't get to hear news about how their fellow brothers are killed and their cattle rustle, then we are not serious about solving this crisis If these dangerous herdsmen are foreigners, why is Buhari quiet about their atrocities? Why isn't he treating their case as an invasion or an act of war? |

joborskill: I laugh at the ignorance displayed by many emotionally clouded Nigerians who are against the grazing bill proposed for the Fulani cattle rearers in all states of the Federation. Let's remember that like every other Nigerians, the Fulani's have the right to live and do their business in any part of the country. It is their constitutional right as Nigerians to own grazing fields in any choice location of the country so far it is paid for or provided by the government. We ought to applaud the move made by the federal govt because it will help in ending the unnecessary violence between the Farmers and the Herdsmen. By provision of grazing fields, the fulani's will be restricted to graze on an apportioned land provided by the federal govt. It will be a crime for them to graze their cattles on people's farms once the bill is passed into law. We should not castigate every fulani herdmen as killers because of the few bad ones among them. The incidence in Agatu and other parts of the country were perpetuated by cattle rustlers and not Fulani herdsmen. Cattle rustlers are armed terrorist who steal cattles from herdsmen and graze them around the country as a cover up for their terrorist acts. The ordinary Fulani herdsmen are peaceful people and will never harm innocent Nigerians. The fulani's do not move around with weapons but sticks to guide their cattle. I observed most critics of this Bill are from the eastern part of the country. The igbos need to realize that the federal govt owns all the land and territories in Nigeria and it can decide on how it chooses to use every inch of its territory. The fulani's have every right to graze in the SE and there is nothing any one can do about it. It is their right as a Nigerian just like the igbos are the most travelled tribe doing business in every part of the country. We cannot decide to restrict all igbo traders to the east because of the attitude of few bad eggs amongst them likewise the Fulani's. Most Nigerians criticized the federal govt when they decide to create ranches and import grasses from Brazil to graze these cattles so the herder wont roam about. Now the FG is shifting plans to create a grazing site for the herders in every state which is not a bad move by all standards. We are one Nigeria and we must learn to tolerate ourselves and live in peace. We must shun the politics of hatred and tribalism. Lord Luggard saw the potentials in our diversity before merging us up to form this great country. We must not allow ethnicity to cloud our sense of judgement when the federal govt proposes law that will favour every Nigerian. We must support the grazing bill so the Fulani's can do their business in peace. BTW i am a Yoruba man from the SW. proudly Nigerian
cc: fulanimafia passingshot You said it will be a crime for Fulanis to graze outside the grazing reserves. Question: are the Fulanis paying for the crimes they are commiting presently? You are naive. Grazing bill is not about cows, it's about conquest. Fulanis have no right over anyone's land. If that bill sails through, there will be endless battles and wars. Fulanis should terminate that obsolete lifestyle. This is 2016. You can't use another man's land to display your archaic culture. Why is the govt not thinking of giving free land to business men? |

The way a person/people reacts to conflict should inform you of whether or not to relate with that person/people. Several events including this one, should teach the Yorubas who their enemies are. Yorubas and Igbos can curse each other all day, online and offline, but they won't even go as far as slapping each other, not to talk of spilling blood. If the unnecessary hatred between the Yorubas and Igbos is transformed into a healthy competition or a political/ideological union, the world will bow for the Yorubas and Igbos. |

Dindondin: clearly... the two cultures borrowed a lot from another. but who really owned Olokun, Obatala, etc. Why didn't we have their concrete version of story for Benins. why is it only the Yoruba ones that we have. why is Benin not begger than yorubaland. why is their culture influenced sonmuch with Yoruba stuff. its logical to accept that Oduduwa may be from Benin. but its senseless to think the Benins created yorubaland like some lying elders in Benin do Traditional Edo form of worship is more of ANCESTRAL worship. Edos borrowed some DEITY worship from Yorubas. Both forms are practiced across Edo till date. Ogun, Ishango, Osun were borrowed from Yorubas, and maybe Olokun as well. You asked why Benin isn't bigger than Yorubaland? Why isn't England bigger than USA? Why isn't Portugal bigger than Brazil? Why isn't Spain bigger than Mexico? Why is their culture so much influenced by Yoruba stuff? Not much. Edo language, mannerism, worldview and culture are totally different from Yoruba. It's natural for neighbours to share some words. Yoruba and Igbo even share some words. No Benin elder ever said Benin created Yorubaland. You should learn to differentiate between a people and a stool. Ekaladerhan who was heir to the throne was banished from Benin. He wandered into Ife, became king and renamed himself Imadoduwa (I did not miss the path to glory). Yorubas corrupted this as Oduduwa. Upon Ogiso Owodo's (Ekaladerhan's father) demise, Benin king makers insisted that the rightful person ruled Benin, so they sought him and found him in Ife. Oduduwa refused to return to Benin but appointed his son Oranmiyan to rule in Benin. Oranmiyan's first son, Eweka I, began the Oba dynasty in Benin. Oranmiyan fled Benin and migrated northward, founded Oyo and became the first Alaafin of Oyo. Oranmiyan then ended the cycle by returning to Ife to take over his father's throne. |

PeterKbaba: My simple questions for the Benins will be:
How long did a runaway price from Benin take to walk from Benin to Ife (Probably 3 months). How did he survive without food and water for this period? How can a man so dirty and tired after walking for months, be able to convince the people in Ife, he came from the sky (A better place lol)? What language did their prince speak to the Yoruba's in Ife when he got there and how were they able to understand? How did the Benin know that their prince was alive in Yorubaland?
If the Benin claim they own the OBA title, Why did they have to change from Ogiso Dynasty to a new Oba Dynasty? If you believe that Oduduwa was a prince from Ogiso, there should be no reason for the Dynasty change, you guys would have continued with the Ogiso.....
My Opinion is that, the Benin knew that the was no royal Male blood to carry on from the last Ogiso Dynasty. The was serious trouble in the Kingdom, so they called for help from their closest Spiritual/Prosperous Ife people to send a Royal male to impregnate their Royal princess, so the kingship could continue (Since kingship is from the Male blood line).
Unfortunately, Since a new Male Royal Blood from Ife arrived, they had to change Dynasty from Ogiso to Obaship. End of Story Your foolishness is legendary. |

The yoruba kingdom had existed before Oduduwa settled there. So where did Oduduwa come from? Why did he send his son to rule over Benin kingdom?
Try and see the connection and analogy in this. TO be king you must be royalty by blood line. Hence he sent his son to Benin to rule over his ancestral throne..... You do the math..

OPCNAIRALAND: You got it mixed up pardner.
Bini is a migrant group to Edoland. Binis are the State Rulers that emigrated from Ile Ife and ruled over Edoland.
The pre State, under rulership of Ogiso ended its dynastic power when the Ile Ife State Rulers arrived and established a new dynasty, cults and Statehood.
There is nothing in traditional Edo custom called Olokun. This was Yoruba cult, so was Ifa and Obatala, which the migrant rulers established and which you practice till today.
Yoruba did to Edo what Fulani did to Hausa, except our language persisted as the court vernacular until very recently....in fact right around the Independence of Nigeria...whereas Fulani adopted the language of the conquered.
Separate Bini from Edo sharp sharp! Edo is not Yoruba but Bini is part and parcel Yoruba and nothing you can do to erase it. Ignorance may be excusable, but displaying and celebrating your ignorance with pomp and pageantry is very shameful. Bow your head in shame and ask for God's forgiveness. |

So why is King of Benin a titular Omo n'Oba (the descendant of Oba), can the Benin palace give us clarity on this? The first ruler of Edo was Obagodo (Oba Igodo). Benin Kingdom was formerly known as Igodomigodo. Obagodo reigned in the Ogiso era. All other Ogisos and Obas of Benin were his descendants. |
