The attention of the Annual General Conference planning committee has been drawn to a statement credited to the Administrator of Rivers state to the effect that Rivers state government paid hosting rights for the hosting of the NBA AGC 2025. We wish to clarify that the decision to host the 2025 AGC in Portharcourt was taken in August 2024 and was not subject of any bidding process or payment of any hosting rights. The host city has no hosting right and there is no representation by the NBA that the Conference must be held in a chosen city. Traditionally, because of the enormous cost involved in hosting the AGC, NBA Conference Planning Committee approaches organizations, agencies of government and state governments for support and the support requested for is unconditional and not tied to hosting rights or any rights whatsoever. Recent NBA conferences have been supported by different state governments, corporate organizations, ministries, departments and agencies whose budgets accommodate corporate social responsibilities and share the same vision with NBA. Such financial supports are in the form of gifts, partnerships or sponsorships. The money from Rivers State was a gift and was not tied to any purported hosting right for the NBA AGC. We are committed to delivering a world class conference to members of the Bar and will not be drawn into any unnecessary controversy over this issue. Emeka Obegolu, SAN Chair 2025 NBA AGC Planning Committee |

NBA NEITHER REQUESTED FOR NOR RECEIVED ANY MONEY FROM THE RIVERS SOLE ADMINISTRATOR: A RESPONSE TO SOCIAL MEDIA REPORT. By Deji Adeyanju Esq. I have read with concern the statement circulating on social media purportedly issued by the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), in which he accuses the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) of hypocrisy over its decision to relocate the 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) from Port Harcourt to Enugu. As a member of the legal profession and a stakeholder in the affairs of the NBA, I find it necessary to respond, both in defence of the Bar and to urge the NBA to stand firm in the face of political pressure and constitutional subversion. 1. There Are No “Hosting Rights” in NBA Conference Planning: The concept of “hosting rights” as invoked by the Sole Administrator is unknown to the practice or tradition of the NBA. There has never been any formal bidding process or contractual commitment that accords a state perpetual or presumptive rights to host the AGC. The choice of venue is a discretionary decision of the NBA National Executive Committee, made after careful evaluation of infrastructure, logistics, security, accessibility, and the general atmosphere conducive to the hosting of a national event of the NBA’s stature. That Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt have frequently featured as host cities is a matter of capacity, not entitlement. The narrative suggesting that Rivers State was unjustly stripped of a “right” is not only constitutionally incoherent, but also historically inaccurate. 2. Financial Contributions Do Not Determine Conference Venues: The claim that the NBA’s decision is somehow tied to a failure to honour financial contributions made by the Rivers State Government is deeply flawed. The NBA is an independent professional association, not a mercantile contractor. Its commitment to national service and legal development cannot be bought or sold. The 2023 AGC held in Abuja was conducted without any financial contribution from the FCT Administration. The suggestion that states can buy influence or secure hosting rights by donations is a dangerous insinuation that undermines the integrity of the legal profession. The NBA must continue to demonstrate that it is immune to inducement and that its decisions are guided solely by principle, not patronage. 3. Contextualising the Rivers State Government’s N300 Million Support: It is critical to understand that the N300 million contribution referenced by the Sole Administrator was made under a democratically elected administration. The NBA’s engagement was with a government legitimately elected by the people. The situation has since changed. Rivers State is currently under a governance arrangement that is widely viewed as unconstitutional and antithetical to the rule of law. As lawyers, we cannot turn a blind eye to the erosion of constitutionalism in any part of this country. The NBA, in line with its duty to uphold the rule of law and democratic governance, made the morally and constitutionally right decision to withdraw from an engagement that could be interpreted as legitimising autocracy. 4. The NBA Must Not Be Intimidated or Gaslighted: The NBA must not be bullied into reversing its principled decision. The veiled threat of public blackmail and the invocation of misplaced grievances should not move the Bar. We must remind ourselves that the NBA’s credibility rests not in how many funds it collects from governments, but in its ability to stand as the voice of the Constitution, even when it is inconvenient to do so. Any attempt to weaponise public sentiment to undermine the NBA’s decision must be seen for what it is—a distraction from the real issue: the imposition of undemocratic governance in Rivers State. 5. My Admonition to the NBA: Stay the Course: I commend the NBA for its courage in relocating the 2025 AGC and urge it to remain unshaken. The Bar must resist the temptation to sanitise or normalise unconstitutional governance. We cannot, as an Association, claim to defend democracy and yet fraternise with actors who rise to power through means repugnant to that very ideal. The NBA has always been more than a convener of conferences; it is a bulwark against tyranny and arbitrariness. In this moment, more than ever, we must hold fast to that role. Let us be clear: this is not a repudiation of the people or lawyers of Rivers State—who remain our colleagues and brothers—but a rejection of unconstitutional governance. And it is a stand we must continue to take, with resolve and without apology. We are lawyers. We are defenders of the rule of law. And we must not retreat. https://kubwaexpress.com/2025/04/14/nba-neither-requested-for-nor-received-any-money-from-the-rivers-sole-administrator-a-response-to-social-media-report/

Calitoscassius:Viral Video: Sen Uba Is not Owing Any Bank--AUCC A video going viral has come to the notice of the Andy Uba Campaign Council, AUCC, where a group of protesters, clutching placards, are seen at the gate of a house discribed by the narrator in the clip as the home of Distinguished Senator Andy Uba. According to the narrator, again, the protesters are staff of Heritage Bank, HB, Abuja, ostensibly at the home of Sen Uba to have a discussion with him over loans he took from the bank and hasn't repaid. The narrator claimed that the workers stand to lose their jobs if the money is not paid by the senator. However, a careful study of the video and content of the narration easily exposes the lie that the entire video exercise is all about. First, though the protesters are clad in customised t-shirts of Black and green with white patches, the cameraman carefully kept a distance so that captions on the t-shirts cannot be read. So one can not really tell what the gathering is all about. Even so, getting such uniforms at a short notice to picket a loan defaulter by workers in a bank seem a little far-fetched. Even so, whatever slogans are written on the cardboard placards held by the said staff are out of focus. A minimally experienced cameraman would have focused on the slogans on the placards to pass the message. The body language of the so called protesters doesn't even show the seriousness of the claim that their jobs depended on the man they are said to have come to picket at the house. If anything, these could just be some small campaign groups meeting at a rendezvous point to take instructions, as it were. Why was the house itself, said to be Sen Uba's, out of focus by the camera? The answer is quite simple: showing the entire house would have exposed the video as the fraud that it is. Andy Uba's house in Abuja is a well known landmark in a highly exclusive area of Abuja where commercial trycycles that we see plying the road in the video are off limit. Going by the claims of the narrator in the video, since when do workers go about picketting customers who took loans in banks in Nigeria? Coming to the Crux of the matter, there is no truth in the said claim that Andy Uba owes any money to HB or any bank. These are matters that could easily knock off a candidate at the party screening exercise which Sen Uba scaled with aplumb. We understand that this is a season for political propaganda as Sen Uba is all set to sweep the stakes at the forthcoming APC primaries where he is contesting with other candidates. But we had hoped that a campaign based on issues, visible achievements and proven capacity would be the Crux of the contest. The hastily put up video shows the level of shallow reasoning of Sen Uba's ditractors and the more reason why Anambra people should resist them stoutly at the polls. |
Calitoscassius:Do you have any proof he owes them money? Do you know about the terms of the loan agreed between both parties? Or your assertions are solely based on what you read online. Now who’s the naive one? Smh |
ibedun:In driving your point you need not insult anyone. Funny enough you ended up insulting yourself as you’re as ignorant as those protesters there. Are you the one who compromised the judges? Do you even have an idea what this is all about? I forgive you anyway |
Calitoscassius:The law doesn’t work that way my friend. He definitely has collateral with which he collected those loans. There is no need to be emotional about this and it won’t even solve the issues at hand. Just wait and see what will happen next as he would sue them for the so Called embarrassment |

Agadinaagwuofe:Funny thing is he can institute an action against them for this simple charade. In their defense will obviously deny the protesters as staff of the bank and deny liability. |
Will all this make him pay the debt even if he’s really indebted to the bank. Why have they not Instituted a suit against him for recovery of debt at the appropriate court? It’s a civil wrong with phletora of avenues to address same. This is really petty and playing into the hands of politicians. In as much as Sen Andy Uba isn’t a saint, protesting with cardboard in front of his residence is disappointing for a bank like Heritage bank |
Felicity0001:Thanks for this. I’ve been here for a while so I know your story and how it’s been ![]() You’re a nice person though misunderstood a lot because you try to always explain yourself and tell it all. You’re just being you but then we all have different ways of reasoning and perception. Well done! |
royalair:Just replied sir |
maysoft:Different strokes for different folks. Nobody is cheating you in as much as you’re happy with your drivers and they remit on time and as at when due. Initially i did all the repairs but over time I discovered it made them reckless and nonchalant so I reduced the rental fee and shared the maintenance cost 50/50. Presently they remit 25k and I can tell you for free that the rate of repairs have reduced except for regular and routine maintenance |
stacyadams:From your write up you make it look like partners are majorly the issue but I don’t really agree with you. I can understand new drivers wanting to try their luck with Uber due to loss and lack of jobs, dwindling economy and the need to be actively doing something. My issue is those who are already on the platform and for some reasons their partners withdrew their cars. The rate and number of people waiting on new partners on this platform is really high which necessitated my question. As a partner it would take dishonesty and insincerity for me to withdraw my car from a rider and then I must have drawn your attention to my grouse with you before even taking any action. It’s the reason why I can’t do HP because People have died for just withdrawing their cars from non paying drivers who in turn feel slighted and offended especially when they have paid over half of the agreed price. I no sabi fight so I just stick to rentals and stay on my lane. Anyway any driver around Ajah and sangotedo can contact me. I might be able to work something out |
Too many drivers looking for partners and available cars to drive on this platform. Please and please what happened to your previous cars especially to drivers already on the e-hailing platforms? Was your partner bad or inconsiderate? Please let us know so we can easily refer you or help engage you |

Please I need a good driver in Benin for rentals. Car is a 2005 Toyota Corolla. Must already be a driver on any of the e-hailing platforms. Thank you |
Something happened to me today and I feel like sharing. Some days back I made a post about the availability of Uber in Benin as I have intention of exploring the Benin market while observing Lagos and their wahala. So I got a clean Naija used corolla and also got a driver thanks to some old friends. My intention was to put the car both on Uber and Bolt as my other cars in Lagos. The car was registered in Delta and expires in November so I felt it should remain so for now till then before changing it to my name. While registering on Uber, they rejected my road worthiness as according to them, it must be done in the state the driver intends to drive. I must admit I didn’t know about this probably because my other cars are all registered in Lagos and I didn’t encounter such issues. Delta and Edo are brothers na and in the same province so they should have accepted na ![]() Anyway I decided to let them be as I heard Uber isn’t serious in Benin and decided to focus on Bolt. After submitting all registrations 4 days ago, they finally responded today and I moved to their inspection center with the driver. When it got to my turn, my village people decided to remember me ![]() My AC which was working fine until that time just stopped working and was blowing air. I switched off the car and put in on again still got the same result so I decided to check the bonnet and see the cause of it. Alas the car was overheating! see me see naija used o, the first time I decide to try naija used due to paucity of funds Na so dem remember my sins ![]() While staring at it in my confused state I discovered the fan belt had gone off. Even the inspection guy was bewildered because everything was fine some minutes back. So I looked for a mechanic around who checked the car and discovered that all the bolt holding something something which connects the engine and radiator Fam was broken( please don’t blame me, I was already livid and angry at that point that I wasn’t even concerned with whatever he was saying). That’s how we drove the car without fan for about 3 minutes to a guy who could remove the broken bolts. That one just told me that I will have to come tomorrow as Nepa will take light by 6pm and it was already past 5 then and he didn’t feel we could finish it today. I was persistent that he starts today and see how far we could go as I couldn’t afford to leave the car there or drive it that way home and kill my battery and engine altogether. He started and to the glory of God the man finished exactly 3 minutes to 6pm. Even the man was suprised and commended my resilience. The mechanic fixed the Belgium bolt he bought after oiling it and went ahead to fix the radiator fan and the belt. Today naim I sabi say drivers Dey try no be small. I drove the car home and didn’t encounter any issue despite the AC switched on the whole time. Tomorrow I’d do a comprehensive check again before going back for the inspection. I don’t know if this is a sign but my God pass them. Sorry for the long read... I still Dey vex sha ![]() |
UcLloyd:There is a difference between a joke, sarcasm and plain stupidity. I’m sure you know where your previous statement falls through but if it was actually meant to be a joke then apologies. Peace✌ |
UcLloyd:Something is definitely wrong with you. If you contributed to his course please show proof and I’d refund you. Don’t come here to act dumb and childish |
izzou:You’ve said it all. In fact it was because of his previous post where he thanked someone for helping him that made me think otherwise and take him serious. He also came off grateful and appreciative. Nobody asked for proof of his child’s illness but someone who’s opportune to have access to his statement of account came and accused him and he became a thief and a scammer. Na even those wey read the post scroll down as usual Dey rant Dey find truth. Help you no go help but you go follow others pour fuel for person body |
Vision2045:Please enough of the explanations as comprehension is really a virtue. When you can please do try to post some hospital receipts atleast to assuage the minds of those who really contributed to your cause. Peace✌ |
Nezzjnr:He’s an empty barrel. Why is he running? He thinks he’s the only one with access to information and connections |
jpworld:Can you just be quiet for once and think before writing. It’s not as if you donated a penny or even tried to help. Apart from displaying your overbloated ego here and disrespecting Nairaland drivers I don’t know your purpose here. Now back to the issue at hand, the young man came here to solicit for assistance and this Honorable house made effort to assist him as a verified e-hailing driver and active participant of this forum. Someone now is doubting the purpose for which the money donated was used for and is also maligning his image and character without any iota of proof to back up his assertions. It is not the job of the defendant to provide proof when challenged or accused. The burden of proof lies with the accuser who has boldly accused him of being a gambler and a fraud. He should go ahead and post proof otherwise anyone can come here and accuse anyone for the mere sake of it. It is after the accuser has provided proof that the burden then shifts to the accused to defend himself appropriately. @vison2045 has been trying as much as possible to clear his name even after stating that he’s at work driving and promising to post more proof. There is nothing yet from the accuser to substantiate his claims neither has he told us how he came about his claims apart from giving flimsy excuses. In as much as I’d enjoin @Vision2045 to post receipts paid by him, we should be wary of people who are quick to lay accusations without doing proper background check and scrutiny |
and wouldn't it be obvious that he owes them? If they are protesting in front of his house and demanding for some sort of debt repayment?
