One thing to note, EFI engines are meant to run with cooler air, hence, the conventional airbox. The IAT (Intake Air temperature sensor)or MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor) uses the temperature of the air going into the throttle body to the combustion chambers via airbox, to determine the amount of fuel the ECU commands the injectors to spray from the signals they send to the ECU. So, it will be ideal to place the Cone airfilter where it can be getting cooler air, rather than the hot one from the engine. Meaning, you may need an extension tube to extend it far away from the engine. But that depends the set up of your airbox or intake tube setup. Not every car will need an additional tube to install the cone filter. If possible, it can be installed right inside the airbox, if you are that techie. But do know that it will work wherever you place it, the filter (whether on the hot spot or cooler spot). Its just for better performance, i think. Ikenna. |
Immediately I installed the cone Airfilter in my 505 V6, the engine sound changed. That is, once i rev beyond 2,500 rpm, it will start sounding like a turbo engine, which is when my V6 power comes in. Below 2,500 rpm, the engine runs like normal I4, but above that, it turns the car into animal. So at that point, the filter gives the engine more hp due to the way it was designed (High flow of air). By the way, it also improves the fuel economy or increases mpg. The brand am i bought is Spectre. K&N is more popular, but cost more. You can find the discusion here: http://www.505turbo.com/forum/index.php?/topic/2321-air-filter-for-v6/ The instuction on the pack says: Clean every after 50k miles and re-use. This was the one i purchased: http://www.spectreperformance.com/index.php/catalog/air-filters/air-filters-racing-cone/3-mounting-flange/hprtm-filter-3-3-5-4-inlet-red-chrome-1.html You need to know the size of your intake tube, to know which size to purchase. My MAF opening is 3". But i decided to buy one with 4", but comes with 3", 3.5"& 4"adapter, so that it can be used in any car, other than my 505 V6. You can find more of the difference sizes here: http://www.spectreperformance.com/index.php/catalog/air-filters/air-filters-racing-cone/3-mounting-flange.html Like i earlier noted, we also have K&N cone air filter. Google it and find out more about it. Compactibilty is not an issue. Thats why its called Universal air filter. But you need to find out which size that will fit your MAF, AFM or intake tube. we we: After a very long search and scrutiny, my LION 406 has is here! LION Owners in the house, kindly welcome a new member!Do it here: https://www.nairaland.com/1003701/peugeot-thread-peugeot-community Congrats! Ikenna. |
yungboss: thought as much that the air ffilter wasnt stock, wanted to ask if it was K & N...what difference does it make, i.e, does it make a difference in horse power?A lot! The filter is design for race. The brand of mine is Spectre, not K&N. It automatically changed the engine note. The V6 song is now sweet to listen to. Ikenna. |
gmyguy: Clean engine, but your battery terminals have been removedYes, i removed the battery terminals since the 31/12/2012 i came back from the trip. The vehicle's Licence expired on that day, which was why i had to come back that same day from the East. Unfortunatly, I will have to change the number plates too, to the new one, while renewing the vehicle Licence, which i was told will cost me 30k. So, i have been using my 2nd car, the 605 V6 since then, pending when i renew the 505 Licence and change the number plates, soon. Ikenna. |
This picture, below, of my 505 V6 engine bay was taken this morning. As you can see in the picture, the engine now have brand new A/C compressor and Universal Cone Race Air Filter. Those familiar with K&N cone Air Filter will understand. So, you can now understand where the more power was coming from and why i was catching my fun. Ikenna.

Cyberknight: Good advice. I used to own a 505, wonderful car, and it NEVER gave me any trouble except one day when I was firing down from Lagos to the East and the bloody timing belt cut and left me stranded at Asaba. I managed to locate a local mechanic who bought another belt and fixed it for me but that one too cut at Umunede and I had to tow the car to Asaba and spend the night there (and I was making such good time). In the end, when I got my mechanics to look at the car they said that the valves (whatever those are, I'm not really a mechanically minded person) had been fouled up and so forth, and so I had to make some expensive repairs which ended in my selling the car. Such a splendid beast, I've still got fond memories of it...Timing belt? Am anxious to know what model of 505 it was. Was it a GTI? Because i do know that the engine in 505 PAN production, XN1 & XN1A, didnt have a timing belt, but a double timing chain. But the 505 GTI, which had only ZDJL engine (EFI), had timing belt instead. PAN never produced GTI. GTI was produced and sold in Europe, Australia and few Asian countries, like Indonesea. So if yours was the ZDJL engine, the timing belt will break like everyother timing belt of other brands, if not replaced when due. Of course, Nigerians only replace their timing belt, water pump & tensioners only when they fail. Most will even replace only the belt when it breaks, just like you did, without bothering to replace the water pump and tensioners as well, which will make the belt again to break soon. But then, when the timing belt breaks on you, it may cost your valves as well, if care is not taken, the entire engine. The timing Chains in the 505 with XN1 engine dont just snap or break like timing belts. They will be giving you sign with noisy rattling sound. Most times, its been caused by improper lubrication ( bad oil). It will snap if ignored for a long time. But i dont see anyone leaving it that way, since the rattling sound can be very disturbing. I dont know about other cars with timing chains, but i do know the one in 505 will be embarrassing you with its noise if you refuse to attend to it. But of course, it will surely get weak over time. But we are looking at 100 thousands of kms here. Ikenna. |
Jucol: Wow! Impressive road trip. I was counting the number of pictures you took. I somehow lost count around 39The warning light on the instrument cluster is the coolant level radiator sensor. The sensor has been acting up lately. But i always manualy check to be sure the coolant level in the radiator is ok. Ikenna. |

Starblack M: Nice story line at least for those who enjoy driving a long distance. But the consumption of fuel is quiet high.Below is the fueleconomy mpg of 505 V6 and other 505 models: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymake/Peugeot1987.shtml From the link, you could see that mpg between the 505 V6 and other 505 I4 are almost the same. The difference isnt that much. According to UK Autocar Road Test of 505 V6 5sp manual, in 1987, the car averaged 24.2mpg with a mixed driving (city & highway) after the test. And they stated that a full tank of the car ( 70 litres) should give over 300 miles. Remember, mine covered 336 miles on the same 70 litres. Note that the test car had no A/C, while mine have and the A/C was on and still averaged 21.8mpg, even with the traffic jam. Ikenna. |

For those that are desperate to see how my 505 V6 engine looks like, find the attached picture. I took this picture with my Nokia N97 in January, 2011. Ikenna.

gmyguy: THAT ENGINE PIX LOOKS LIKE A SNAKE NEST...NO offense, but the pix quality is poor and gives me the creepsSome of the pictures i took, including the engine bay, with my phone, Nokia 808 PureView, couldnt upload here, due to the picture quality with large sizes. Some of them are upto 12 MB. Even after resizing them, they were still too big to upload here. So, i now uploaded the pictures i took with my back up phone, Nokia N97, at the same time with the 808 PureView, which the quality of the pictures i took with the N97 were not even close to the ones of 808 PureView (41 megapixel). The pictures of the 808 PureView are so beautiful. I will upload those ones in my Facebook, since it can take such large sizes. So, bear with me for the poor quality of the engine bay picture here. Ikenna. |
Am not a fan of any of them, so i can only direct you to the reviews of both cars, by the previous and present owners. Find them in the links below: http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/volkswagen/vento/1996/ http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/toyota/camry/1996/ Ikenna. |
Wallie: Your 505 still looks very good especially considering the rate at which cars wear out on Nigerian roads! The Golf VR6 is no joke. Looking up your car specs (2,849cc 6-cylinder engine 125 kW), it seems comparable to the Golf 2.8 VR6 128 kW but I guess the VR6s are few and far between.Long distance driving is a hobby to me. So, it wasnt a difficult thing to know the route to my destination, since i have been driving on that highway for long. Though, recently, i started seeing some signs directing confuse drivers roads to take to their destinations betwen Lokoja and Ajaokuta. I think after Ajaokuta, the signs stopped, meaning, you are on your own. Anyway, i dont pay attention to those signs since i know my way. Ikenna. |
IKENNA Beautiful job... Again I say, very beautiful job.. 1. I love your 505. I have dreams of buying one and restoring it to its original factory state (with a few modifications of my own.) I wonder if you know any place in Nigeria where car customization is done. I'm talking beyond wheels and tyres to suspension, engine replacement (should I decide to fit a bigger and more powerful engine into mine) and brakes. I am yet to decide between the 505 and the 504. But God knows I surely restoring one. It would be a 1 year project as I intend to pace myself. I have been told I will be able to buy a good peugeot in the east whenever I am ready, its just the restoration that I have no I dea where I would do it. 2. The state of the roads are wow!! I would have enjoyed pushing my vehicle through those roads. 3. Fuel consuption! WOW!!! That was a real shocker. I always thought stick shifts (coupled with carburetor pumps) would consume more.. HMMMM!!!! 4. Quality of your photographs are great. 5. The picture of Amawbia/Nise road brings memories.. You were barely 10minutes away from my home town of Agukwu Nri. Beautiful thread, nice ride, lovely photographs. Please let me know abou point one should you have any ideas on that.
1. I would advice you get a foreign assembled series II 505 or foreign assembled 504 GL, not the PAN production. Most of the foreign assembled came with 4 wheel disk brake as standard. The PAN 504 & 505 had rear drum brake, very unreliable on highspeed and fails often. But the PAN 504 & 505 rear brake can be converted to the disk brake. I did the conversion for an uncle, back then in Enugu. 505 V6 is a very rare car. It maybe difficult for you to find. But it will save you the stress of the conversion, since you are after one with powerful engine. 3. The ZN3J, PRV 2.8 L engine, in 505 V6 is an EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) engine, not a fuel carburreted engine. 5. Mom is from Nise. So, I drove to the Nise to visit my mom's siblings (Uncles & Aunties) that came home for the Xmas Holiday too. Ikenna. |
elelem: Great job ikenna and very detailed too. To make your trip shorter in case you want to travel next time to the east. if u are travelling straight to Anambra from Abuja, when u get to Eha Alumona junction Nsukka after Obollo Afo,turn right and drive into nsukka town- ogurugu road through uzo uwani to Awkuzu junction in Anambra state . You ll get there in 38 minutes .ok. Thanks. Ikenna. |
Collins93304: Ikenna bobo, I am always looking forward to reading your travel threads, very interesting and refreshing. Is your 505 an 84 or 85 model? Looks well maintained. I hope you will post more threads about your future trips. It's 1986 model. Ikenna. |
nice one Ikenna. i certainly would get a car with a V6 engine when next i visit the country, i hope to travel from Lagos-Benin-Lokoja-Kaduna (my wife is from kaduna, while my parents are in Benin) with stop overs though...Any ideas on a peugeot 407 or 406 V6 engines? would you know if Hyundai Sonata 2.4l engine comes with a V6? Certainly, i'v fallen in luv with a V6.
I dont know anything about Hyundai Sonata. But a 2.4 L engine doesn't sound like a V6 engine. I could be wrong, though. The V6 engine, ES9J4S, in 407 V6 (petrol), is the same V6 engine in phase II 406 V6. The engine develops the maximum of 210 hp. Its a good engine. Phase II 406 V6 manual transmission is the next car i plan to own. Please, note that 407 also have a Diesel V6. Ikenna. |
InvertedHammer: How fast were you going? I think G-lada to Lokoja is 1hr drive? No, its about 3 hrs drive. Though, could do less, depending on the speed. Ikenna. |
looplat: That pakupaku moto belongs to the scrap yard! You need help. Ikenna. |
If i'm not mistaken, this is Lokoja-Ajaokuta road. 3 years ago this road was untarred and took 1hr to complete. now it takes about 10mins lol
Yes, you are right. Ikenna. |
brojero: Nice one bro! Are the 605 and the 406 yours too?The 605 V6 is mine too, but the 406 is not mine. Ikenna. |
Kamsy10: I dont understand why Nigerians always drive without seatbelt. Even in movies,u see them get into d car n just drive off. What made you think i wasnt wearing the seat belt? Ikenna. |
yungboss: oh yes, i recall the L and the TI, the 504 L had a horizontal speed indicator, with a steering-neck gear lever, lol. The 504 TI had the peugeot 404-type door handle...the L and TI i used to think were grand and great grand parents respectively, of the 504 GL.504 GL & TI were produced the same time. The 504 TI had mechanical fuel injection engine, PAS, auto transmission (optional), and power windows. While GL had fuel carburreted engine (XN1). The 504 L was older than the TI & GL. The American spec 505 (the STI you mentioned) is not newer than my type. Both are Series II 505. The difference is that mine is Euro spec, while the other is American spec. Do know that the North Americans got STI as series I too. The 504 series 2 you mentioned was not Nigerian spec. It was Argentina series 2. So those ones you saw then in Nigeria were imported as used (tokunbo). The PAN series II 504 had the conventional 4 speed manual as standard, with XN1A engine. Ikenna. |
yungboss: nice write up, good pics to follow too. Your story reminds me of a trip i made with my uncle in his 505 evolution from Benin to Abuja back then, in 1999...the car was so powerful on the highway, though a 4 cylinder. I liked the fire-glow instrument lighting, same as in a bmw. But on another trip we made to lagos, we had this luxurious bus harrasing us at close to 140km/h, he had to give way for it to pass. I also have faint/fond memories of my dad's 504 GR in 1992/1993, bought brand new in 1982. But then the Mercedes and bmws of that era used to beat us up on the highway, especially the S class (W126 280SEL etc, u know those benzes and the W140s) and the bmws e34 et al. My family friend, a medical doctor had a 504 GL, which i think was superior to the GR then. The GL had a double Carb and it sounded so differently from the GR and SR, the latter i never really liked because of its light weight (of course it was because my dad didnt like the SR). Pugs are really nice cars, especially to 504 and 505.To me, 504 was the best Car Peugeot ever produced. Those that had the foreign assembled 504 GL will understand me. Of course, 504 GL was superior to the 504 L, GR & SR. The GR & SR had 1.8 Litre engines with single barrel carburetor, while the GL had 2.0 Litre engine with double barrel carburetor. The GR & SR were Nigerian specifications (PAN productions). Europe and America had mostly 504 Diesel, TI & GL. The ground clearance of the GL and the SR/GR were different. The GL was designed for speed, hence the double barrel carburetor, lower ground clearance and heavier. Most of the GL in Nigeria then were imported. The imported ones had 4 wheel brake disks. In the late '70, when PAN came into existence, they started assembling 504 GL. But the PAN GL had rear drum brake system, just like their SR and GR counterpart. You can tell the difference between the foreign assembled GL from PAN assembled from the instrument cluster, rear brake system & the A/C vents and control panel. The imported GL had a durable engine more than the PAN productions, because the crankshaft of the foreign GL had holes on the crank journals, for proper lubrications, while the PAN engines had none. Most people that had the PAN 504s & 505s were replacing their crankshaft (aka New model crankshaft) to the foreign GL crankshaft (aka old model crankshaft), which cost more than half of the PAN crankshaft. The 504 GL, the foreign assembled, then was given the name " Never Say Die", because of its ruggedness, reliability and durability, more than the PAN productions. The only cons of foreign assembled 504 GL was body rust. It can rust like hell when it starts aging, unlike the PAN 504s & 505s. 505 took after the 504 GL. That is to say, the 505 was designed out of 504 GL, not from 504 L, SR or GR. They realised how good the 504 GL was and reproduced it as 505, even though the 504 GR & SR were newer to the GL. Thats why the standard 505, including PAN productions, had all the mechanicals of 504 GL. The only difference between the 504 GL and 505 is the body and electrics. Unfotunately, the PAN 505s didnt get the foreign assembled 504 GL crankshaft, rear brake disk, low ground clearance, etc. Only the PAN 505 SR got double barrel carburretor. The rest had the single. One good thing about XN1 & XN1A (engines in 504s & 505s) is that they have double timing chains, which makes them indestructible. But due to poor lubrication ( thanks to Nigerians maintenance culture), the chains tend to rattle. But the noise from the rattling would be so loud that one would know its time for the chains to be adjusted or replaced, which is very easy to replace, anyway. Ikenna. |
