No sir. You're still missing it. The Balogun is a chief to the Olubadan. He is the Olubadan's commander just as Aare Ona Kakanfo is the commander of the Alaafin's army. Every town where there is a king has a Balogun in Yoruba land. Do you know Obasanjo is Balogun of Owu?
The Balogun is not a king. He is more like the Chief of Defense Staff in modern times.
Like I said, the peculiarity of the Ibadan system whereby the Balogun can become king is because of the warlike status of the founders of Ibadan. Due to the possibility of a coup, the Balogun was also given right to become king moreso the Balogun in those days was answerable to the Alaafin and not the Baale. It is a testament to their warrior capabilities not the status of the Balogun per se.

Not exactly true though. The Balogun is as you said is the General of the King's army. Don't forget Ibadan was founded by warriors. That is why the Balogun line has right to the throne. In other towns and system, the Balogun can never become King so as to avoid the possibility of a coup. In actual fact, the Olubadan is a Baale not a king. The position used to be occupied by the Basorun not the Balogun until the lines of succession were carved out in the early 1900s or so.
It is the Basorun and the Olubadan that are at par not the Balogun and Olubadan. As a matter of fact, it was during Ogunmola's reign that the two were merged to become one. The Basorun is the highest military title while the Olubadan is the highest beaded civil title usually attained by the Agba Oye in those times.
