Christianity Etc › Re: Why Should I Believe In God If There Is No Evidence For His Existence? by Image123(m): 8:05pm On Nov 17, 2015
jadeus:
I am an atheist that was formerly a Christian. Till today I still can't fathom how educated individuals in Nigeria can still believe in the bible despite all the impossibilities in it. During my transition into atheism, I went through this phase where everyone I met told me that I should just believe without the evidence. They said that it was my disbelief that was driving me away from God and that I should not question him. I should just keep quiet and follow him even though I'm not sure he exists. I'm sure most Christians would ask what is wrong with that but I want to ask you, if a someone of another faith tells you to convert to their faith without showing proof that their God is real, would you do it? You wouldn't. That's how I feel. If there is no scientific evidence showing the existence of God, then I cannot believe in him.

Also, one of the reasons that I started doubting Christianity is all the impossible and horrible stories it contains (I'm sure someone would use the 'God of the Gaps' argument here and say that God did it):
Haven read your OP, it's relatively easy to state that you were never a christian, you only practised the religion. A christian is one who is in relationship with God, so since you were never in relationship, or repented, or born again, or having eternal life, you simply were not. Two, christianity is not just about your brains or science, it is supernatural, extraordinary and miraculous. God and the Bible do not encourage blind faith BTW, it is living faith that is needed.

1) How could God create this earth in 6 days, but take only one day to create the rest of the universe? That is impossible. According to recent estimates, there are about 100 billion planets in the universe and assuming that they are all the size of the earth, it would take about 600 billion days for God to create them and that's not including the stars!!
This is a baseless and wild assumption. The Bible says nothing about creating the universe in one day.

2) God is omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent and yet, he didn't know that creating putting the tree of knowledge in the garden would lead to the destruction of his beautiful creation? Didn't he know that he would later regret his choice (Gen. 6:6)? After all he knew the end from the beginning, he would have known that creating the tree would lead to billions of people to hell, yet he still created it. How is that loving? As a parent, how many of you would create something knowing your child would suffer forever as a result of that thing? I'm sure none of you, yet you would excuse your God from doing the same thing.
Baseless and unfounded yet again. No where does the Bible state that God did not know anything. There is no excusing God, rather we should see the obvious consequences and realities that follow.

3) If God is caring and compassionate and provides for the needs of the faithful if they just ask, why is Nigeria in the state it is in today? After all, we have people praying from morning to night asking for Go'd guidance and help, yet things seem to only get worse. In countries like Sweden, Denmark, Finland, they are made up of mostly atheists, yet they do not experience the amount of violence that we experience in Nigeria. They have good social safety net, low rate of unemployment, very good security, high life expectancy, low rate of corruption and are constantly said to be the happiest countries on earth (Nigeria was recently said to be the worst place to be born in).
Talk is cheap, who and where says and determines the worst place to be born in? i guess you just swallowed that by faith? A fair study of the Bible will NEVER arrive at such simplistic conclusion that God provides all needs if we just ask.

4) How did Noah carry all the species of animals on the earth into the ark? Presently, there are about 15 million species of animals on the earth (a conservative estimate and we are losing species everyday). How did Noah put all these animals inside that ark? Also, apart from the two of every kind of animal, they had to carry extra animals for the lions, the tigers and other carnivores to eat. They also had to carry lots of hay and grass for the cows, goats, horses and sheep. How did they fit inside the boat? Why are there still fish alive today. If the flood happened, it would have messed up the salt balance of the waters and that would have killed loads of fish. Also, how come 8 unskilled people were able to build an ark of that size that lasted for about 40 days without bending, while skilled people build the Wyoming and it bent. It was not even as big as the ark.
What has this got to do with anything?Anyway, the Bible doesn't say Noah carried any animal into the ark. It doesn't say anything about unskilled people. Science talks about global floods many million years ago, do you doubt them, ask the geologists.

5) Why did God punish the people in Noah's time? It was not like he had given them any commandments and there was not evidence that he talked to them.
And you have evidence that He didn't? Has God talked to anybody or given any commandments in your estimation?

6) Using the timelines of the bible, the earth is 6000 years old. How is that possible when there has been fossils that have been dated to around 100,000 years.
The Bible has no timelines in that context you attempt.

7)Why do you actually believe in God? is it because you genuinely believe that God exists or you are just using him as an insurance policy against the bad times and ultimately hell.
i believe in God because i have a personal relationship with Him. He saved me from my sins, answered my prayers and took care of my family and friends.

There are many more reasons that I doubt the existence of a God, particularly the Abrahamic God, but I can't list all of the here. I am just worried that this deep religiousity of Nigerians would not overcome our common sense and our ability to think about the world around us in a purely scientific way instead of relying on a book that was written 2000 years ago. If we just use God to answer everything in the universe, we would not advance, we would not be able to do research on things that we don't understand like HIV, homosexuality, small pox etc and try to come to reasonable conclusions not rash conclusions based on things that were written by people who thought that blood letting worked.
And how has a so called purely scientific way(whatever that means) helped matters? Science has not given us more peace or happiness or forgiveness or love or hope or joy. You think the world is happier than it was 200years ago? You think people are more fulfilled today than 500years ago? What exactly is this new benefit of atheism?

Oby Ezekwesili is a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! that she allowed herself to be used for purely electoral purpose and after the election the #BBOG# just died a natural death, is one of the major reason pseudo activist who are PEP should not be allowed to lead our struggle. If Lady Odumakim had led the #BBOG#, the ALUTA would have been ongoing now. They used our pains as thier platform for promotion.
What are you on about? The BBOG campaign is still ongoing. The only difference is that the present government is dialogueing and promising, unlike the past government that sent antiriot policemen and teargas.

Ymodulus:
It's so sad today that religion - Christianity and Islam have laid a bad path for its future followers. Even Christians were terrorist, in the time of David , Moses and old testament, Christians went around destroying others home, now Islam has followed the way. It's time religion is wiped out. It has caused more harm than good.
.
i'm taking you up on this little bit. It is wrong to state that Christians were terrorists in the time of David , Moses and old testament, or that Islam has followed the way. That is a very mischievous or at best ignorant position.
The Old Testament people did not go about killing soft targets or forcing people to their religion or to the service of their God. Else, we can claim that every kingdom in the Old era were terrorists. All those kingdoms had kingdom wars, territorial supremacy wars etc. There was no UN or Peace keeping missions or committee, empires, kingdoms, and countries fought against each other, and Israel was also in the mix. Fighting philistines, Syrians, Assyrians and co had little or nothing to do with a refusal to serve Jehovah(on the part of the Gentiles). Jews didn't form sects and go to kill non-Israelites for not serving God. The take over of the land of Canaan was not chiefly because of religion, but according to the Bible, because the land had been promised to the children of Israel by Jehovah, and because the time of judgement of the people in the land was 'ripe'. Once Israelites had possession of Canaan, they didn't attempt or go into any neighbouring countries to destroy homes or kill people for not serving God.

And ...
Spend N5.8Billion only on Presidential Jet in 6 months
One, 5billion is nothing compared to Nigeria's yearly budget running in trillions. It's perspective and context, we're broke. Two, over 5billion is not for 6months but it's the year's budget, which is the plan approved by the last administration. The planes are still there and the staff and expenditure are there. It doesn't disappear like a dream, be realistic. If in 2 years time, things don't improve, then of course, it's okay to complain and blame just the present government.

what has she achieved during BBOG? Why was the campaign not active in this new govt?
That's today oh. If you check Oby's TL on twitter, you'll see more and it's daily basis. The BBOG campaign helped sensitize and wake up the government to the mass kidnap and terrorism on women and children in the northeast. The world got the message and cries and Malala came to tell GEJ before they started acting. The current administration has been promising, meeting and engaging instead of teargassing like the previous administration.

Lol, he has to use the jets though work and plans are ongoing on starting a national airline. Those are some of the jets intended for use to start it. BTW, the money spent is from the previous government budget, we're still on the previous budget. If anyone is to be blamed, it's those who allocated and planned and approved 2015 budget.

Of course it has to be after the naira devaluation, it is the after effects of the devaluation. You need more naira than before to buy or import goods. The CBN policy is not at the detriment of the masses, the masses won't have headache because of imported toothpick, private jet or Indian incense. BTW, these things are not banned, the government simply said if you want them, find dollars elsewhere. We(CBN) cannot continue depleting reserves so that you can import private jet and toothpick.

let me give you an insight, thailand import rice to nigeria and as at GEJ rice was N8500 now with PMB preventing them not to exchange a discounted dollar at central bank rice is N10500 wholesale price and is not yet xmas.which means you are paying N2000 more on decision.

PMB quick response approach as if nigeria is a family house has made 41 items importers or company usind those item that has since incrreased to layoff workers.

Well is just temporary, pmb can not continue like this, otherwise other countries will gang up against us by stop importing and you yet to make common steel spoon,so stop saying what you dont know.

Country develop when you export more, not try to control impoet at the detriment of your citizen
This is not PMB's fault but currency devaluation. If a bag of rice was $50 last year for instance, businessmen need about 8000naira to buy one bag at about 160/$. But now, the same businessmen need 10,000naira to buy the same bag of rice at 200/$. This is a situation PMB met on ground. Obviously, things imported will be more expensive plus the jara market people will put to it to maximize their profit blaming others.

What indigenous economy?
Indigenous economy and yet he opened the borders to indiscriminate rice imports.
Compare this to the much maligned jonathan that focused on home grown agricultural self-sufficiency, and an attempt at rewamping the home-grown automobile industry,e.t.c.
It was the jonathan administration that even blocked the EU trade deal.
The west is annoyed with buhari, but his phantom indigenous policy is not one of them, because it is virtually non-existent.
Stop trying to be a sycophant.
The legal/official opening of borders was the smartest move to make at the time. Imported rice illegally finds its way to our markets through our porous borders and VERY corrupt customs officers. With this move, hide and seek action films and bribery is reduced. You take your goods legally and lawfully through the normal routes and pay a lower fee than the former bribes, seizing, and man know man escapades. This of course increases government revenue and allows for competition. When local produced rice is quality and cheap, we'll buy and eat.

Actually, in the President's mind and in the Nigerian Constitution, homosexuality is illegal. The Western world wants it legalized but nobody is under the illusion that crime and illegality doesn't happen. What we need to build on are strong institutions that can prosecute, penalize and punish crime effectively.

My take on all this OP is that the calibre of people who are often reported as rapists in Nigeria do not look like people who would ordinarily have so much data access to be able to watch porn and the likes. Where is the correlation between access to porn site and increasing rape cases in Nigeria? Actually pornography is addictive but me think people who watch porn a lot do it only as a hobby and not to cause harm to others.
There are different categories and caliber of rapists. Yes, certain people make the news like pastor, popular figure, very old man etc. However, it doesn't mean they are the only ones or that such crime is new. The dangers we face are that young people want to practice and expect what they've watched on people, by force, on girlfriends or God forbid family, as revenge or payback, as jungle justice etc. It's harder to catch or even report such.
