Politics / Re: "The Family" - Uk Channel 4 Nigerian (Yoruba) Family Show@9pm Tues 16th Nov 2010 by Imani(f): 7:24pm On Jan 12, 2011 |
I did watch some episodes of the family and while they are an "average" family, i think most of them have issues like any other family. The parents - at least they werent forcing the children to go to church apart from the Ola, which the poor child probably does out of duty. I did see in the last episode the parents played a tape that showed Julie looking completely uninterested in church . I dont know why they made her go if it was against her wishes. Ayo - seems like a likable chap and seem to be able to control his siblings especially the unstable julie. If living at home helps him in saving money to buy a property then fine. Not very sure of the working from home thing but his parents are not complaining. Julie - I do feel she is misunderstood a bit. She does have a strong personality and quite defensive and wants to feel appreciated but the mistake she makes is she is always critical of others and suspicious of their motives. She doesnt trust other's opinion of her and finds correction as being unappreciated. She will struggle in any relationship with a man unless he is a very quiet type and doesnt mind her expressing herself all the time. I have an aunt like that. The husband never talks and it is common knowledge that she wears the "trousers" in the marriage. But if it works for them, so be it. Olu - Quite boring, at least doest everything expected of him. A parent's delight. Ola - I really liked her in the series.so sweet natured but for her weight. While her parents have contributed to her weight issues, she is now a teenager and is now responsible for her weight. |

@ poster, Are you actually concerned about the singles "plight" or just trying to make some quick bucks? And i noticed your post was more directed at the ladies as well. Hmmm |

kidonig: The problem with nigerians is when you try to warn them sometimes, it may come accross as "you are doing well but you dont want them to also do well". I don't bother stopping people from coming to the UK anymore because while some people learn from other people's experiences, some will need to go through it themselves to learn. |
Travel / Re: Uk Settlement Advice From My Fellow Nairaland by Imani(f): 6:38pm On Jan 12, 2011 |
@ topic, Your lawyer has given you good advice however as other posters have pointed out, you may want to get married legally to your partner either in the UK when the Certificate of Approval is abolished (You need to check the UK border agency website for this) or if you want to go through the unmarried partner's route, then you can do so but may need more evidence and documents to prove that you have both lived together for at least 2 years. Your having a child does strengthen your application however, that alone in itself may not be enough as you are not married to the mother even though you have parental responsibility. You need to be more concerned about what benefits your partner is getting as i assume she may be on certain benefits as you mention she lives in a council flat. For a spouse visa, you both need to show among other things that a) the relationship is geniune and subsisting. b) you have adequate accomodation. c) you are both able to maintain yourselves without help from the public fund. While your partner may be entitled to claim, you are not and in some cases, she may loose some benefits once you are now in the picture. Check what she claims for and go from there. For those asking how a baby can hold a passport, any UK born child where at least one parent is SETTLED in the UK or a BRITISH citizen can get a passport in it's own right. In this case, if the mother had Indifinate leave to remain before the child was born, then the child is an automatic citizen even though the mother may not be a citizen. If the child was born before the mother got Indifinate leave to remain, then the child is entitled to be registered as a BRITISH citizen and the mother can then apply for a passport for the child. Babies are no longer endorsed on their mothers passport and need to have thier own passport to travel. Of course the passport office will do their checks before issuing a passport. |
Travel / Re: Missing Plane Found In Cross River: After 6 Months! by Imani(f): 8:29pm On Sep 06, 2008 |
I dont understand A whole plane crash landed and it took six months to find My people, we need a serious change of heart and metality in this our country. In less than a months time we will be "celebrating" 48 years since independence. I wish people would stop all the partying and really give some thought to the sad situation of our nation. There are some people that just don't want the country to improve. I was watching an NTAi presentation the other other and a few people were asked what would be their priority if they became president for a day. About half of those interviewed said education. With the current levels of education we have in that country, i am not sure more academic education is what we need. What have we done with the education we have recieved so far? How can a plane go missing and the whole aviation industry could not locate this plane and it took local hunters to find the plane. Well, I am not too surprised as quite a lot of the country is made up of unnecessary bushes and jungles. |
Music/Radio / Re: Nigerian Artist Capable Of Winning Grammy? by Imani(f): 8:16pm On Sep 06, 2008 |
Some Nigerian artistes think shouting is singing Most of the tunes i hear these days really suck. Having said that that, there are still a lot of credible musicians out there and they dont have to sing in English!!! |

Travel / Re: Stripped Completely By British Immigration Officials by Imani(f): 7:18pm On Aug 19, 2008 |
In times like these, you just wonder what use is the Nigerian foreign office. The Embassy in London does nothing at all for Nigerians in the UK. I am always ashamed to go there sometimes as sometimes both staff and customers forget their manners and behave as if they are in Oshodi market. Like I have always said, we can complain from now till thy kingdom come, until we place some value on our citizens, others will keep taking advantage. |

Politics / Re: For The Sake Of My Sanity I Have Resolved Not To Care by Imani(f): 7:27pm On Jun 25, 2008 |
The "story" of Nigeria is a sad one. A nation with much promise that always fails to deliver whether it is sports, education, economy, science, politics etc. What is even more frustrating is that fact that we have all we need to be a "successful" nation, but i guess the average Nigerian isn't bothered about that anymore. When we live in a society that most people only care about themselves, then we get the kind of people and leaders we deserve. Someone once said Nigeria is a hard country with hard people. Sometimes, people people become victims of their circumstances. There seems to be 3 classes of people in Nigeria. The "baddies" who want no good whatsoever. Then we have the "flippables". These group make up most average Nigerians. They are the most vulnerable and hence dangerous group, especially when they "flip" to the "baddies" side. These are the same people that will make so much noise about corruption but when they get a chance in office become the oppressors. The last group the "bravehearts" are very few in number, well, if they are not crushed by the opposition. These are the ones holding the torch and are a symbol of "hope" for the masses. Personally, I will still care about Nigeria, well, i have to. I still have some family left in Nigeria and do visit. I think it is sad when people turn their backs completely on Nigeria. Sometimes, i can understand their reasons but may not accept them. No country has perfect history and we have to live with ours. We are Nigerians for a reason and we have to search within ourselves for that reason. Being treated as second class citizens in our own country, never mind the outside world is unacceptable. People complain that Nigerians in Diaspora like to complain, well, since the ones at home have complained so much that nobody hears them anymore, or they have resorted to "managing" their troubles, those of us that have since left that way of thinking can only hope by bringing issues to light, something can be done about it. Someone mentioned farm and a mule, when the rest of the world is using technology in farming, someone is talking about a mule in 2008. Maybe that is why we are very good "managers". Anyway, Mr poster, please don't get fed up. There is light at the end of the tunnel, even if nepa refuses to let us see that light. |

4 Play: Dr Doom and Gloom, you said Totenham will finish above us in the recently concluded season too. I don't have strength to fight you today. You are lucky. Go and support your team. They will need all the luck they can get. Opps, I forgot, most Manchester United fans either live in London or China . Talk about plastic fans |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (Old) by Imani(f): 7:15pm On May 21, 2008 |
The Arsenal team is not really about a big name signing. As long as we find those people who can play well in their various roles, we will be fine. This team has started to gel, although not well enough at crucial stages of the season, and it would be a shame to break it up just like that. However, we need quality signing this time round. Sometimes, you can't know what is in a packet until you open it, which is why buying "almost" developed, rather than "unknown" future stars may be the way forward. Common Arsene, we cant always be doing buy one, get one half price now |
