As a way of grooming and promoting speaking abilities and oratory skills among Secondary School students, Agricultural Social Entrepreneurship Foundation (ASEF) held her inauural Children’s Day School Debate Competition which was also graced with Food Systems Dialogue Summit on Thursday, 27th May, 2021 at FarmKonnect Headquarters, Bashorun, Ibadan. The inter-school debate was designed to create a platform where school students share thoughts and ideas by debating on topics relevant to the food systems dialogue. Industry experts in agriculture and education were also present as guest speakers to discuss important thematic areas on transforming food systems for children and adolescents in Nigeria and Africa at large, in attendance was the Adviser to The Oyo State Government, Hon. Victor Oloyede, who highlighted the plans of Governor Seyi makinde for students in the state.

The school debate competition’s preliminary stage featured 16 video entries from secondary schools in Oyo state, of which 8 schools were selected to participate in the semi-final. The grand prize for the finale was contested by four schools who had scaled through the first round of debates in the semi-final; Yejide Girls Junior Grammar School, Ibadan; Lydeb Comprehensive College, Ibadan; Mount Rose High School, Ibadan and Brightest Star College, Ibadan. After two rounds of debating, Brightest Star College, Ibadan emerged as the overall winner of the inaugural debate competition, while Yejide Girls Junior Grammar School emerged as the first runner-up and Lydeb Comprehensive College, the second-runner up.

Prizes such as tablets, phones, and other gadgets were awarded to the winning schools, while students from all participating schools also won, for themselves, an Agritech scholarship courtesy of the CEO, DrCloud Technology, Mr Ibrahim Lukman. In addition, Three (3) outstanding students from the debating schools were also awarded scholarships worth 100,000 Naira each as prizes courtesy of the CEO, FarmKonnect Agribusiness PLC, Lt. Comm. How fast can I break this fast?

This is life and we're natural players of this game.

the length of breath.

I SEE NO CHANGES

This present day is wrapped around a futile future,
Of a past gifted with a beautiful picture,
The right went wrong like Mr. Right who left his bride in pain,
Everything changed — the fall of an empire, the rise of a new reign.

I see no changes,
All I see is pain and agony,
The monotony of acrimony,
Our society sings this in symphony,
A dirge of peace and harmony,
Poverty persists, it colonized and became a colony,
We all dance to the tune, the melody of felony.

I see no changes,
All I see are dreams dying a fantasy,
Oppression has become the new ecstasy,
Depression building a dynasty
in the bones of our youthful pride,
What legacy will it leave if these fruitfulness die?
It's a beautiful world of a beautiful lie... (Close my eyes)

I see no changes, all I see is impression impressing -- a public display of parody
The truth is a lie, a paradox of irony,
They right the wrongs but they're authors of confusion,
Now it's a crossroad on the way to salvation.

They no longer call on divine for intervention,
Corruption has become the primary option;
On a secondary level, it's a core decision,
Change is only but a fiction...

I see no changes,
All I see is racism racing in the human race,
A broken mentality of a mindframe,
Everybody playing mind game,
Now their minds have lost the game — the global gain...

I can't cease to see,
The wonders of how It has always been,
I hope these beings later see how to be human,
A world war of one world peace, the definition of a true man...

AGENDER

In the beginning was the world
and the world was with man,
lo! The man had the world
behold! It's the world of a man.

So, a woman is a womb-man
who bears the bane of humanity.
We then hold on to this mentality for a lifespan,
Passed it down from time to time till it became a vole of history,
Fathers went farther and mothers were murdered — the victory of patriarchy,
Masculinity is superiority — sovereignty of nepotism,
"Give them a life to die for"; feminism is euphemism,
Like a stage where the role-play is televised,
This problem is solidified and the solution is improvised,
The truth is a slave and the lies are colonized.

The folly is for the wise,
It's a mental problem and the mentality is maximized,
How do we tell our sons that daughters also shine
when the belief system is a thing of the mind?
And how do we unlearn this education
when its effects have built an institution?
We live in a present day of a million pasts,
Alas! At first is occurring at last...

The society is a scripted outline
of life and time of a lifetime
designed with the idealogies to hypnotize freedom.
Now, they live up to this down syndrome.
Like the madness of a young lover,
The exercise had to work out.
So, if your plans don't work out my dear Watson,
It's a mystery story; an enslavement of freemason,
The falsity is to create tranquility,
Equity or equality, this Gemini is fatality...

The world wallows in this wane,
As her mindset is a victim of the golden chain,

Like a fantasy fall of the night and a beautiful break of the day,
In resplendent attires are they arrayed,
Lost in their fails and falls but never lost their way,
Dying to survive; resurrecting from disarray.

Their life is light and their light is path unto men,
A magnificent power like voices from the Den,
They give strength to the weak, beam to the bleak
knowledge to whosoever seeks, and turn dry lands into creeks.

They're the present of the future,
a gift to adore tomorrow,
The joyful noise to the brim that quenches the songs of sorrow,
They bring dawn to the dusk of hope,
The dying dreamer that give life to a dangling rope.

The visions they own are contrast to the nation’s offering,
Realities of impossible dreams.
Bleak, yet light beckon all eyes to see.
A glory to glorify, splendour of a swaying sea.

Of sprites that ignite the whiteness of brights,
Workers of magic, miracle and mights,
Beautiful days that break silent nights,
Of kings and queens with brighter lights...

Saving is an integral habit of daily earners, it has overtime become a culture and to a meaningful extend a key source of their business survival. However, a major ill of this activity is that, it has excluded the finance of daily earners from the nation's GDP as their liquid cash goes directly to thrift collection where they believe their earnings are safe while the thrift custodians leave their funds out of circulation as it has affected, not just the economic growth of the nation but also truncated the ability of the funds to be used for other amenities that will enhance their lives.

A credible research carried out by National Association of Nigerian Traders in the mid of 2019 showed that 67% of Nigerian traders' daily funds are excluded from the nation's economy. A gross of over 600 Billion Naira, what a huge loss upon the nation! These funds would have added value to the nation's state of economy only if they were allowed to circulate and put to appropriate use. Furthermore, Majority of these daily earners are prone to financial vulnerability as quite a number of them are unbanked and this has resulted into restricting them from being financially secured to acquiring loans from banks and enjoying other social benefits such as life, medical and trade insurance. The research further reviewed that many traders have gone out of business as a result of job hazards such as accident, health issues and inability to further their trade business as a result of loss and other trade casualties.

In other to create a platform that includes the finances of daily earners in the economic system that will also suit their cooperative model of daily savings as a way to better their standard of living, AFIDE — which means Agricultural and Financial Inclusion of Daily Earners, a subsidiary of FarmKonnect Nigeria, a social enterprise and the first Agricultural Real Estate that permits all and sundry to partake in the dividends of modern day Agriculture has created a cooperative system that allows daily earners benefit immensely from Agriculture as their entrusted funds become a guarantee to secure loans from banks in partnership with AFIDE and also become a beneficiary of trade, life and medical insurance respectively.

The AFIDE system still preserves the saving and thrift collection culture among daily earners as it aids the inclusion of their finance into the socio-economic system of the nation which has given them the privilege to earn and benefit greatly from modern day Agriculture and also secured them a better life.

INTRODUCING AFIDE

According to the United Nations, 47% of Nigerians belong to the lower class and about 81% of them are daily earners, a huge part of their daily earnings goes into thrift collection and survival which makes their profits an exclusion from the nation’s GDP. By reason of their source of income, majority of them are unbanked and vulnerable to health and life risks as it is impossible for them to get bank loans and other opportunities which consequently make them excluded from benefitting from insurance packages. At the long run, they benefit little or nothing from their entire live earnings.

In other to create an atmosphere that allows daily earners enjoy the benefits of their earnings for a better life and as a way of adding profits to the nation’s economy, FarmKonnect Nigeria -- a social agribusiness enterprise, that keyed into the sustainable development goals to promote food security and sustainable Agricultural practices in Africa has created a subsidiary tagged ‘’AFIDE’’ which means Agricultural and Financial Inclusion of Daily Earners. AFIDE aims at improving the lives and conditions of daily earners, that is, those who do not earn salaries in large sum, but earn daily profits or commission from sales of commodities and/or service rendering.

To fully harness the market, AFIDE is designed to run a cooperative management system where it will include the mini, micro and macro cooperative societies in the country in cohesion with the administrative structures of the cooperatives and Trade Unions or Associations in the targeted markets or catchment areas. As a registered cooperative society, FarmKonnect Multipurpose cooperative will liaise with cooperative representatives and leaders of trade unions to promote the interest and financial security of their members.

In a nutshell, AFIDE exists to help Daily Earners entrust their daily funds into agriculture and enable them to make profits while their contributions become security for them to secure loans from banks in partnership with AFIDE. The banks directly disburse the loan to the subscribers while AFIDE under the supervision of FarmKonnect Nigeria gives them cooperative guarantee.

In conclusion, The AFIDE system is designed such that Iya Sikirat Alata, Abeni Alagbo, Baba Jamiu Oni Micra, Chukwudi Spare part seller, and Garuba mai tea etc operating in the local markets under a cooperative society or a trade association can be part of the mission to achieve food security and zero hunger while they earn sustainable income from agriculture.

who provided sepulchre for the faint,

Breathing in and out for days, we walked.
We sweated to stupor for cowries after we worked,
So, hustle became the motivational speaker,
The war-drum to our eardrums that told us life is a battle ground,
Rule your world, own your space, fight for your ground...

Now, we're victims of this circumstance,
In a bid to win, we lost our substance,
The society made us like this, now, she's afraid of her invention,
She murdered us and fathered the situation.

Our karma is the society here,
Our wares in tiers that became wear and tear,
We killed us, our foresight was made blind;
She gave crumbs instead of riches to who won't mind
and for he who defied her, she picked on
to rate under her and effortlessly underrate.

How do we defy what has been defiled?
The purge, a daily sad record of youthful genocide,
The royal massacre; deaths of undying dreams,
A blare beam, the quiet glimpse.
