Anybody can claim to be Nigerian, and journalists can also be too lazy to do proper research.

The names don't even sound Nigerian, so I will take that article with a pinch of salt until the news media can categorically state what part of Nigeria this individual claims to originate from

@Ishilove, I was about logging off when I saw your brilliant mention. What you posted here is really fascinating! You know why? It brought back some memories for me.

First off, 2 different guys on this thread (whose family members got married to Eggon women) actually said the butter beans is tasteless. I didn't notice the post of anybody who said it's tasty while rapidly scanning the thread posts. I'll check/read the thread pages again.
https://www.nairaland.com/8286806/bride-price-n5000-four-basins#133189034
For your reference.

So back to the escargot taboo story, I met a young lady slightly over 25 years ago (she was then a freshman in a Nigerian Uni) who was fluent in Yoruba language because she was born in Lagos State and hailed from Isokoland (Ozoro to be precise) in Delta State and she told me the EXACT thing you posted right here that in her place in Isokoland, they do NOT eat snails, and I raised my eyebrows in disbelief!

I actually love global history, and I study cultures and taste local cuisines while traveling from time to time.

It's REALLY amazing that your town folks in Ukwuani ALSO have the same culture with the Isokos of NOT eating snails. It seems you guys might be ancestrally related since Isokoland and Ukwuani share boundaries. There MUST have been a common OR shared ancestry then with outward migration of folks still carrying the taboo of NOT eating snails along with them. That's my strong hypothesis here based on historical trends in human migration going back to hundreds of years.

I did ask her WHY snails are forbidden in Isokoland (Ozoro) and she said something about the "snails coming to the rescue of their ancestors from danger" centuries ago.
This is a possible explanation. Taboos like this are usually put in place as a covenant of respect, homage or reverence to that animal or their spirit representatives for a perceived assistance/protection rendered.

But on another note, I'm a lover of snails (peppered snails) from time to time with my refreshing malt drinks... They go pretty well with the taste buds. You are missing out Ishi. cheesy
I'll pass. I can't imagine putting those boneless slime factories into my body, not matter how well seasoned they may be embarassed

Last but not least, in your Ukwuani culture, if you DON'T eat snails BUT your man (spouse does) would that have a negative metaphysical effect down the road on your relationship?
No, it doesn't, especially if he is not fully ancestrally linked to my community. Even if he is linked, you are only responsible for your head and nobody else's.

Whoa! So, it's true afterall. Tasteless butter beans... NOT even salt was added? It's such a fascinating culture though and it would be nice find out why they do that (i.e., eating tasteless butter beans).
It seems only elders bother about knowing the origins of certain cultural practices. Food is normally spiced for taste, so if the butter beans which ordinarily should be prepared with salt and other ingredients is left tasteless, there must be a reason for it because in this same thread someone said butter beans is delicious when cooked.

For example, in my hometown, eating snails are forbidden. I have never eaten snails and will never eat them. When I asked my parents the origin of this practice, even they could not give me a concrete answer. They were only certain of the repercussions of breaking the taboo, but could not tell me the history of that taboo. I am still hoping I can meet someone who can transmit the oral history to me.

The sentencing of 27 years for the heinous murder of a defenseless woman seems lenient to me, bordering on impunity. I wonder why the option of a death penalty wasn't considered, given the severity of the crime. I am pained seriously. sad sad
It was very disturbing to watch, seriously.

Well, 27 years is a start, compared to when he wouldn't have even been charged to court in the past. I am guessing his high profile is what made the government to finally sit up because the whole country was watching.

That man is sick, but I hesitate to blame him entirely. His actions seem to be influenced by a religious ideology that, in my view, diminishes the status of women, effectively treating them as slaves. I acknowledge that expressing this opinion may lead some to assume I'm motivated by a bias against the religion. However, I'm committed to speaking my truth and highlighting what I perceive as an injustice.

I recently watched a true crime story by Ray Williams on TikTok, which highlighted a disturbing case from Kazakhstan. A man brutally murdered his wife, and at the time, Kazakhstan lacked laws against domestic violence, which makes the man go Scot free
. This was too painful to me. Notably, Kazakhstan is an Islamic nation. This incident underscores a broader concern, the subjugation of women. Unfortunately, many women in such societies seem to accept their circumstances as normal, believing it's a male dominated world where women have no place. cry cry

I implore the Sokoto State Government to take immediate and decisive action on this man. Ignorance, whether born of illiteracy or religious misguidance, is no justification for such behavior.
He didn't go free. He was sentenced to 27 years for torturing and killing the woman, while his brother got 4 years for reckless abandonment. The case also changed the scope of how domestic violence is classified in Kazhakstan and now DV has been criminalized in the country.

of course what do you u expect?

after all 99.9% of SA 'blacks' are not mentally balanced. (do notice that i put the black in quote simply bc they are truly not blacks - they are more closely related to chimps).

even the pics of the youths you posted, look into their eyes and you will see they all have symptoms of Disruptive behaviour and dissocial disorder possibly cause by years of physical, mental and spiritual abuse by their white masters.

so i am not surprised they are inclined to lgbtq+ (which on its own is a mental disorder). they tend to accept what they see their white masters accept.

my comment is not meant to be an insult sir.

I would have commended the effort, but considering the chaotic state of the country, I doubt it will succeed. The lack of order and discipline will likely lead to its failure, making it a futile endeavor because this is a ZOO.
I totally agree. It looks good on paper, but the enforcement is where the problem will be. Nigerians are notorious for sabotaging government efforts for their own selfish reasons.

Politics is crazy.

This man has suffered from politics.

The same man owns a university in Ekiti, has given scholarships to many people, but because of politics it suddenly looks like he has never done anything.

Something similar happened years ago. He was one of a number of people that convinced government to set up a polytechnic in Ado-Ekiti.

Unfortunately, ten years ago, the polytechnic suffered from power failure. His university has its own power plant, so it had electricity at the time. He went to the polytechnic to see how he could help to solve the problem, but the students stoned his car and wanted to attack one of the hostels of the university because they were angry that it had power while they had none.

Was he the person that caused the power outage at the polytechnic?

The donation to Kings College is for transnational education. Afe Babalola was poor and he earned all his degrees through distance learning. The donation to Kings College is to enable Africans in Africa to also get degrees from Kings College, just like he did (Chief MKO Abiola did something similar in the 1980s, he endowed a scholarship programme in an American university for Africans to learn and get degrees for free).

Somehow I doubt a company as big as Netflix will quit Nigeria of all markets. It'll most likely massively scale back local content and hope for growth.
Netflix for some reason run at a loss for gaining market share in specific developing countries. And Nigeria is a key market in entertainment in anything concerning Africa. It's the hub of African culture.

With Netflix need of wanting to look as the hub of local content, having Nollywood solidly in its arsenal is in its best interests. Reason why I think they won't quit just yet. Unless, a nuclear Armageddon economic event probably happens.
I agree
