Crime › Nigerian Girls Rescued From Prostitution In Burkina Faso(photo) by Islie(op): 8:05am On Jul 23, 2015 |
Six Nigerian women have been sent back to the country from the Burkina Faso where they were allegedly taken to for prostitution by a woman, named Balikis.
While re-uniting the girls with their parents in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, the Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Oyo State Command, Innocent Akatu, said the girls were tricked to leave Nigeria, adding that the victims did not tell their parents about the journey.
Akatu said the girls refused to engage in prostitution in Ouagadougu, Burkina Fasso, and were locked in a room by the trafficker.
He added that their journey back home after three weeks began when one of them escaped and alerted the Burkinabe police.
He said, “The victims, after being smuggled to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, discovered that they were going to be used for prostitution. They were not even told that they were going to Burkina Faso. These girls were told that they would be given lucrative jobs abroad; one of them was told that she was going to manage a jewellery shop owned by her trafficker.
“One of them was taken from her home in Ikorodu, Lagos State, and driven to Saki in Oyo State. When she asked why it had taken them so long to reach the airport, she was told that the plane had left and that they would have to travel by road.
“The Nigerian embassy assisted in arranging emergency travelling documents for them to return to Nigeria after their lucky escape. We have taken them to the hospital for screening and they are HIV negative.”
One of the returnees, Ganiyat Samuel, said she lived with her grandmother in Ikorodu before she embarked on the journey.
She said, “A woman, called Balikis, came to me and said that I would make more money as a fashion designer if I travel outside Nigeria. I told her that I had no passport, but she said that she would take care of it. I did not tell any of my parents.
“When we got to Saki, she said she could not get a passport for me because the office had closed. We travelled for two days to get to Burkina Faso. She took me to her house and told me that I would have to do HIV test. The test revealed that I was pregnant, but HIV negative. She told me that she brought me to the country for prostitution and that I would have to abort the pregnancy. I refused and she locked me in a room. When she brought another Nigerian a week later, I helped the girl to escape and she alerted the police. The police rescued us and arrested the woman.”
Samuel’s mother, Olasunkanmi Afuwape, said her father had died and after she re-married, she took the girl and her brother to live with her mother in Ikorodu. http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/nigerian-girls-rescued-from-prostitution-in-burkina-faso/lalasticlala

Crime › Police Rescue 14 From Abia Baby Factory (photo) by Islie(op): 7:39am On Jul 22, 2015 |
NO fewer than 14 pregnant girls and ladies have been rescued by men of the Abia State Police Command after they raided an alleged illegal maternity home.
The police said the martenity home was allegedly being used as a baby factory at Umukpeyi village in the Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.
The age of the victims, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Udeviotu Onyeke, range from 14 to 25.
Onyeke explained that the alleged baby factory belonged to a “notorious child trafficking syndicate leader in the state, simply known as Madam Nma”.
The police spokesman said the rescue followed intelligence report that the principal suspect and the proprietor of the illegal maternity home had been habouring pregnant teenagers in the home for commercial purposes.
He said when interrogated, some of the suspects claimed they came from Imo, Anambra, Enugu and Rivers states.
He said, “Majority of those rescued claimed that they were brought to the home by sympathisers after they were driven away from their homes when it was discovered that they had unwanted pregnancies.”
Onyeke said while 12 out of the 14 suspects were confirmed pregnant, two said they came to check if they were pregnant.
The police said the owner of the illegal maternity home escaped arrest as she was not at home during the raid, but added that efforts were on to track her down.
The PPRO appealed to members of the public with any useful information on her whereabouts to volunteer same to the police for prompt action.
It will be recalled that the said suspect was earlier this year paraded by the police at the Officers Mess, Umuahia.
The police had then told journalists that she was picked up at Uyo after many years of evading arrest, assuring the people of the state that she would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations were over. http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/police-rescue-14-from-abia-baby-factory/lalasticlala

Family › Three-year-old Falls Into Well While Playing With Friends (photo) by Islie(op): 8:08am On Jul 21, 2015 |
A three-year-old boy, Emmanuel Samuel, died on Sunday after he fell inside a well in front of a building on Hassan Sule Street, Ita Oluwo, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.
The kindergarten pupil, his elder brother, Timileyin Samuel, and some of their friends were said to be playing around 3pm in the area when the deceased accidentally strayed into the well.
PUNCH Metro learnt that residents and officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, who came to the area after receiving a distress call, had difficulties rescuing the victim due to the depth of the well.
Our correspondent gathered that a member of the Oodua People’s Congress later summoned up courage and went down the well to rescue the boy at about 7pm. He brought out the boy dead.
It was learnt that the well was dug about eight years ago by the landlord of the building but was abandoned when it did not produce water.
Some youths were said to have become angry with the landlord for leaving the well open. They reportedly stormed the residence and broke some window glasses.
The landlord, Bamidele Ogunwole, was said to have been arrested on Monday after the incident was reported at the Ogijo Police Division, Ogun State.
The family members of the deceased were still wailing on Monday when PUNCH Metro visited the area.
Emmanuel’s mother, Kikelolomo, who spoke in tears, described the deceased as her “everything.”
She said, “He had brothers and sisters, but he was my everything. He was very intelligent and smart. It was his brother that rushed to tell me he had drowned.”
The father, Sergeant Abu Samuel, said what pained him most was the fact that the landlord buried his child without his consent.
“I was on duty when I was called that my son had drowned only to come back home and be told he was dead. To add insult to injury, that man (the landlord) buried my child somewhere in Agodo without my consent,” he said.
Residents described Emmanuel’s death as avoidable.
One of them, who identified herself only as Esther, said, “It is very easy for anybody to get trapped in a well that is left open like this. One of the man’s tenants told me that they had complained several times to the landlord, but he ignored them.”
The lawyer for the family, P.O. Idogun, accused the police of “foot-dragging,” adding that no relative of the suspect had shown up at the police station.
The Chairman of the community development association, Alara Ogodo, blamed the suspect for burying the child without the approval of his family.
The Director, Lagos Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe, confirmed the incident, saying “our men from Ikorodu fire station responded, but the child was brought out dead.”
The Ogun State Police spokesperson, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the landlord had presented himself to the police.
He said, “He is in our custody. We will do something about the case.” http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/three-year-old-falls-into-well-while-playing-with-friends/lalasticlala Picture of the boy and the well he fell into

Politics › US Advises Buhari To Engage Technocrats by Islie(op): 7:50am On Jul 21, 2015 |
• President, Biden share notes on terror warBY Doris Obinna
The United States Vice President , Joe Biden, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to engage technocrats to manage key sectors of the economy if the country must record economic fortunes and attract foreign investments. He also shared notes with the Nigerian leader, who is paying his first official visit to the United States, on terror war.
A statement signed by Mr. Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, revealed that in a breakfast meeting hosted by Biden yesterday, the vice president and Buhari compared notes on the fight against terrorism, with Biden sharing his country’s experiences.
According to Adesina, at the meeting, which was held at the Naval Observatory, Biden’s official residence, the vice president shared “what the US had learnt from the terror war, counseling that victory cannot come from military option alone.”
Adesina quoted Biden as saying that military option must be combined with strong socio-economic support programmes, as he promised that the US would work with Nigeria in that direction.
The statement said: “VP Biden assured of the goodwill of the United States in rebuilding the Nigerian economy, but observed that corruption and weak institutions must be tackled, if Nigeria was to benefit from reforms.
“He added that seasoned technocrats must manage key sectors of the Nigerian economy, and only then would investors be attracted to the country.”
Biden also congratulated Buhari for emerging President after his victory on March 28 elections, saying that he enjoys the confidence of Nigerians.
In his response, Buhari thanked the US for standing by Nigeria in the run-up to the last general elections, noting that the visit of the Secretary of State, John Kerry, was critical, as it sent home the message that “America would not brook the subversion of the people’s will.”
President Buhari said that Nigeria has lost between $10 and $20 billion to oil theft, stressing that such income could have been deployed in sectors like education and healthcare, among others. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/us-advises-buhari-to-engage-technocrats/lalasticlala |

Politics › Buhari Wants Me To Always Tell Him The Truth, Says Adesina by Islie(op): 7:59pm On Jul 20, 2015 |
A thanksgiving service was held recently at the Foursquare Church, Sabo-Yaba in honour of the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.
It was a moment of reflection and appreciation to God for his numerous blessings on the life of Adesina, as testified to by friends and well wishers who were around to felicitate with the accomplished journalist.
During the service, Rev. Tunde Lemo preached on the importance and need to remain in the presence of God. Using the example of the bible character, David, Lemo said, “David was a man who enjoyed the presence of God; he craved for God’s presence so much that he said better is one day in the presence of God than a thousand years in the world.”
According to Lemo, God’s integrity cannot be judged by the feelings or experiences of any man because God’s integrity is rooted in the consistency of the power of his word to fulfill his ultimate purpose. He added, “God intervenes because you have done things according to his ways.”
The General Overseer of Foursquare Church, Meduoye Felex led the prayer session for Adesina and his family. Other ministers of God who prayed for Adesina were Pastor Dayo Adewunmi, Rev. John Eweje and Rev. Ikechukwu Ugbaja.
Adesina who sees his appointment as a call to serve his country said, “I have done one month of this, and it is service to my country; the present government is working and the media will ensure that the citizenry is fully communicated on whatever the government is doing.”
He promised to do his best with his wealth of 29 years experience in the media and the contacts he has built, adding, “Every experience that I have acquired over 29 years in the media is what I will bring on board.”
On his impression of President Buhari, Adesina said, “I will like to say that if it was not this president I never thought I could serve in government, because he is a man known for integrity, accountability and transparency. That is why I accepted this appointment. The first day I resumed, the President told me that he wants me to always tell him the truth, and I believe he will do all that he has promised Nigerians.”
Adesina further called on Nigerians to be patient with the president, saying, “This President is going to deliver but the style is different. As he moves Nigeria forward, we should be patient because at the end of the day we will have cause to thank him.”
Adesina also stated that his appointment came to him as a surprise, but that he is happy to be working with President Buhari.
The General Overseer Rev. Felex said Adesina’s appointment was divine, noting, “For me I see it as the hand of God to bless his church, because God will always need a man. I am joyful because this will also bring expansion in the church of God. Adesina has a close relationship with the Lord over the years and I know that even now, he will continue to serve God in his position.”
Wife of Adesina Nike said her husband has impacted her life positively over the years, “When we got married, my vision was for my entire family to make heaven. Femi is a Christian I admire; he has sharpened my life, my Faith in God”.
Nike recounted how her husband supported her when she took ill, saying, “Femi demonstrated the love that the Bible speaks about.” She prayed for God’s guidance upon her husband, as he continues in his new office.
Chairman of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Lagos Chapter Joseph Okonmah gave a brief citation of Adesina. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/07/buhari-wants-me-to-always-tell-him-the-truth-says-adesina/cc lalasticlala |

A 29-year-old house wife, identified simply as Vero, has been accused of infidelity in Irri community, in the Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Her husband, identified as Ben, on Thursday told the elders of the community that he caught his wife in illicit love affair in an uncompleted building.
Sources said Umukoro insisted that the elders must dissolve the marriage in line with the tradition of the Isoko people.
One of the sources said, “Today (Thursday), Ben met with the elders of the community and asked them to dissolve his marriage to Vero in the Isoko tradition.
“He told the elders that the woman and her secret lover were caught having sex in an apartment in the outskirt of the community.”
It was gathered that the illicit relationship between the woman and the man had been going unnoticed by the husband before the bubble burst.
Our correspondent was told that after Vero and her lover were caught, some youths in the area manhandled the lover.
He was later summoned by Ben’s family and told to appease the gods according to the custom and tradition of the people, in order to avoid calamity that could befall the community as a result of the adultery.
The source added, “However, a fine of N50,000 was imposed by the family on the woman. She was subsequently banished from the house pending when she would comply with the directive.” http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/housewife-caught-having-sex-with-lover-fined-n50000/lalasticlala ......
