My encounter with Goodluck
by Sunday Oliseh 30/10/2012, 14:24
The 22nd of October 2012 will go downin history as the first time that a Nigerian sitting head of state held a retreat to seek solutions to the nation’s ailing sport fortunes.
The federal government of Nigeria, invited me to lead a group of 38, made up of personalities in Nigerian football and day-to-day life, to solve our soccer problems.
At 10 am President Goodluck Jonathanwalked into the hall and, to my amazement and pleasant surprise, he only took his leave ate 6:30pm (eight-and-a-half hours later). How about that for commitment?
Why the urgency?
Nigeria returned from the recently concluded London 2012 Olympics with no medals and never came close to winning one. For a nation of 162 million people that is a disaster, especially when one takes into consideration the fact that sparsely populated Grenadawon Gold.
Our senior soccer team failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and had difficulties this time around too.
The national soccer league is at its lowest point and there is a complete drought of new talent discovery. Currently players are owed as much asa year’s wages at times.
Our World Cup appearance in the 2010 South African World Cup was a disaster. The route to the next one doesn’t look promising.
Here are the recommendations I proposed to the president.
Our national football objective
A nation as mighty as Nigeria cannot aim for anything less then returning to the rightful place in African soccer, No 1.
Creation of a coaching institute/academy
Our erroneous belief in Nigeria today isthat we need to discover new players like the Okocha, Oliseh, Yekini and Amokachi to take our nation out of thisdilemma. However, world soccer has progressed now to the point that talented players are limited without modern day coaching to instil modern team-based football ethics. Look at Spain and Germany; individual play is reduced in favour of team-oriented play and schemes. Now they rule world soccer
This can only be filtered into the football education of the nation if coaches are well groomed nationally to go back to their states and start passing this knowledge on to the youth of their states.
Clearly, without the direct interventionof the president and the state governors, we will have no chance of success.
Privatisation of club ownership
Corruption and mismanagement of government funds are not new in Nigeria.
That is made possible because of the source and the directed aim of the government funding. A privatisation of the clubs, government funding continued but only at the social level and building of desired sporting infrastructures and centres will curb these excesses. A situation where the clubs are owned by private businessmen will be the catalyst to the development of players since profit is the aim for the owners and that will spur youth talent discovery and development.
My opinion of the president
This president is one of the most educated government officials I have ever met. He is engaging, with a strikingly strong sense of humor, a good listener and up-to-date on Nigerian sports and daily life. From my 11hour stay in his company, I must confess that he is genuinely concernedabout what sports means to Nigerians.
The fact that he stayed the whole day to listen to several opinions personally, when some governors and ministers present stayed only half day, and gavea closing speech where he highlighted every major point that struck his interest during the day, showed how attentive he was. He took notes while others spoke. I was impressed.
His appointment of minister Bolaji Abdullahi is, in my opinion, very judicious. The minister has intervened in sporting matters lately in Nigeria in ways that have been fruitful.
Nigeria has a people so passionate about soccer it is almost like a religion and hence any well planned and executed solution will produce positiveresults for Nigeria.

CrimePolice Arrest DSTV FRAUDSTARS by Itoroetti(op): 12:12am On Nov 17, 2012
The police in Lagos have
arrested two traders, John Andy
and Valentine Ezenwaka, for
allegedly engaging in piracy of
DSTV signals.
The Police Special Fraud Unit, SFU, stated this on Friday.
The duo, traders at the Alaba
International market, are
accused of importing, selling, and
distributing “illicit” devices
capable of illegally accessing DSTV’s broadcast signals to
“unsuspecting” members of the
public. In a statement signed by Ngozi
Isintume-Agu, the SFU Public
Relations Officer, the police said
it acted upon a petition by
Multichoice Nigeria Limited, the
provider of encrypted multi- channel satellite television
service known as DSTV. Tunde Ogunshakin, Commissioner
of Police at SFU, said, according
to the statement, that the
suspects set up contrived
equipment that act as gateways
which facilitated illegal access to the multinational company’s
broadcast signals. “Some items suspected to have
been used in pirating the
intellectual property were
recovered as exhibits,” Mr.
Ogunshakin said. According to police records, Mr.
Johnson, 28, an apprentice from
Abia State was arrested in Shop
No. “F” 1377 and the items
recovered from him included a
strong decoder, 16 open boxes and one UPS. Mr. Ezenwaka, 42, who hails from
Anambra State, on the other
hand, claimed to be a technician
who repairs TVs, LCDs, and DVDs. He is the owner of Shop No. “73″
and the items recovered from
him included Avatars and Spider
which according to him are
Receivers for free to air
transmission. Also, a Laptop and Desktop Computers were
recovered, the police said. Mr. Ogunshakin said that the
suspects would be charged to
court “soonest.” Multichoice, through DSTV, has a
monopoly over major
programmes and events in
Nigeria including the English
Premier League, and the full UEFA
Champions League. The seemingly high cost of
subscription for the DSTV
channels makes some Nigerians
look for ways to by-pass
official and legal routes to
access these programs and channels. Officials of Multichoice have in
the past explained that moneys
paid to get the rights of some of
these exclusive programs and
channels, coupled with huge
operation costs, lead to the high subscription fees.
Premiumtimes
my question is all this while that dstv have been defrauding Nigerians, where were the police?

BusinessSuccess Story-seun Osewa Example by Itoroetti(op): 8:58pm On Nov 10, 2012
How Seun Osewa made Nairaland.com a success story.

Seun Osewa launched the popular Nairaland.com on the 25 th of March, 2005. Today, the online forum ranks among the most visited websites in Nigeria . How’d he do it?
He was motivated by failure
Behind every great success there are failures. And Seun’s story is not an exemption.
Prior to the time Seun launched Nairaland, he had attempted to start a web hosting business which failed for lack of viable income model. After that failure, he spent several months researching business ideas and presenting them to friends and family, for the possibility of funding them, butto no avail.
Finally, he got the idea of starting Nairaland, after he had made up his mind to go the entrepreneurial path (No matter what), after tasting creative freedom in his first startup.
He created a product that comes out of a need
Seun built Nairaland to solve a real and complicated problem for Nigerians. He realized the need for “a more general-purpose Nigerian forum with a strong bias towards issues of interest to Nigerians at home”.
A great way to start a business is to try and provide solution to somethingyou need, or want, to be solved.
He created a viable Income model
Due to the failure in his first startup for lack of consistent cash-flow, the fist question Seun asked himself was “Where’s the money?”
Nairaland had a viable income model from day one. He knew if he could attract enough traffic to the site, he could make money from Google adverts. So, his primary target was to attract enough traffic to the site through great content, better organization and great guest-friendliness.
Business is tough and certainly not forthe weak- hearted. Remember, when you know better, you do better. We can all take a queue from what brought Nairaland to this point.
You remember the Nairaland, don’t you?anything is easily achievable with dedication, prayer and vision.
