So, how so it could have worked ...

1. You were pre-selected.
Uncle had 'scoped 'all the shops looking for cues as to how suggestible the sellers were. It seems your neighboring shops are full of people that will welcome you into their shops, arms crossed saying "yes, wetin u want?". You, on the other hand will probably smile and say "Oga, come in", eager for business.

2. Appearance
With his dressing, he cultivated an image of authority and honesty which lowered your guard further.

3. Subliminal Messages
The screen-saver probably had a subliminal message that your brain picked up but you would not conciously interpret. It could be something like an image flashing for 1/100th of a second saying "Trust me, Trust me, Trust me". If I was doing this, I will learn your route home and place posters with messages about trust, integrity etc. If I was to wear a yellow shirt on the day, I could even send you a series of text messages before (if you had a mobile phone number on your signboard) with random messages about yellow shirts. There are many ways to skin this cat.

Now that you know, you can mentally train your concious to overcome the sub-concious bias. It's not a matter of pride to learn you could be suggestible, just practice self awareness with customers. Be nice but skeptical.

My experience is that the traditional moral compass departed long ago from siblings that do this. They are products of an environment that, yes, definitely has desperation and poverty on the one hand, but also glorifies 'no questions asked' display of wealth in the midst of that poverty on the other hand.

There is peer pressure too... "Mumu, your brother is in the US and you're climbing Okada"

I think these people sacrifice long term love & support for short term thievery. It will out one day. Especially in this world where information is within reach of everyone's fingertip.

Personally, I know when my pants are being pulled down. I smile, let it slide (when I can afford to, thankfully) but place a marker for next time.

Many Diasporans do this as well. Leaving Naija does not make one a perpetual mugu.

Please what can one add to a soakway to douse the odor emanating from it? the soakaway is not full just to make it clear but the odor comes out from the vent ontop of the soakaway.

I am wondering if there are chemicals or freshners that can be placed in the soakaway or vent to douse the order?

Like someone said, it's not recommended to tamper with the chemistry. The soakaway is working as it should.

Apart from changing the occupants' food diet (lol), what I would do if this was mine is to find a way to source and then place activated carbon filters around the vent. Something like this (dunno if you can find in Nigeria) ....

This will involve a mini-project to design a fitment or box around the vent that keeps the filter dry during rainy conditions.

Also note that they are to be replaced periodically, once saturated (you will notice when smell reappears). Interval depends on the, ahem, occupants' diet.

I got some nice 1980 louvred windows with some 25mm iron burglar bars for just N4,700 2 months ago.

When polished and sprayed, you can achieve the above without breaking bank.

I see. Unfortunately, a big wide ocean limits my ability to personally do what you have ably done. I would appreciate details of artisans that could do this however.

This is my 10 year old flat concrete roof. No issues.

All well and good but a little anecdote to share.

In the UK, you currently need to consult a specialist insurer to purchase building insurance if the percentage of flat roof to total surface area in your roofing scheme is greater than 30%.

They even use Google Maps satellite view to calculate the thing so one cannot even lie in peace again, lol.

I'm having to deploy pythagoras theorem and advanced geometry in a current dispute with one insurance company regarding a family member's insurance claim.

On this particular subject, I don't know more than you. I just pick up my phone and do further research on the topic to update my limited knowledge.

If all of us can't do that, I think learning should start from understanding how to research products and solutions.

I thought the purpose of this forum is to learn ... from others. It's redundant to chastise people from asking valid questions here, or to ask them to go check elsewhere. In my opinion.

While this is not necessarily their only source of learning, the most effective source is a group with a shared interest (properties) and shared purpose (how to do properties best).
