TUESDAY 8 - 10 am GROSS ANATOMY LECTURE Yes gross again, U spend most of ur days in the preclinical college in the gross lecture theatre and gross practical lab. Its a normal quip in my school to ask: 'Na anatomy we com study for this school'. 10 am - 12 noon EMBRYOLOGY Also one of my favourite courses. Embryology is so TOUCHING. *Clears throats* ok bck to wat i was saying. In Embryology, u learn how the embryo grows in the uterus to become the fetus and how it is delivered. U even learn how the uterus prepares itself for implantation of the embryo. U are also given a brief description on the process of fertilzation and where it happens. Altho i will advise not to get so cozy abt embryology. It gets harder wen it gets to development of the systems. This is when u start learnin abt developement of each organs : heart, blood vessels (cardiovascular system), lungs, bronchi, trachea (resp system) etc.... 12 - 1 pm BREAK 2 - 6 pm GROSS ANATOMY PRACTICAL Ever seen and felt a uterus? I have *winks* |
How do i spend my average week in med skul? MONDAY: 8 - 12 am --------> Gross Anatomy lecture... The lecturer lects on basic things to be knwn in anatomy. Gives diagrams to explain the LITTLE things explained. U might ask how a 4 hours lecture could ever be described as little. Gross Anatomy is so wide, majority of wat u knw comes from personal study. I believe lectures are only there to stamp wat uve read. Thats my opinion tho. 12 - 1 pm. BREAK Time for mama put things. ; chat wit friends. Have many of them. Bemoan the stress of med skul. Discuss abt football, politics etc... 2 - 6 pm GROSS PRACTICAL Been long i talked abt our FRIENDS in that smelling room. Yes, i can call them that now, the only part i havent dissected is the head and neck, so basically i knw them very well now. That passes ad friendship. Anyways dissecting ting is fun, only it can b a pain in d ass. These are potential times u culd be reading. What i do tho is: i attend 3 consecutive dissecting classes, then miss two. Dont blame, reading is also important if not more. Some ask, what is dissection for? U arent an anatomist (all doctors are meant to be) if u cant open a cadaver and precisely see and name diff structures of the body. How do u avoid d pudendal nerves when performing a surgical removal of sacrococcygeal teratoma without prior anatomical knowledge. How do u do a subclavian venous puncture when u dont knw where the subclavian vein is. That said, gross practical is very tiring, u leave exhausted and sleepy. No thanks to the sleep inducing formaldehyde used to preserve the cadavers. 6 - 7 pm Home sweet home. Sleep sweet sleep. Eat sweet eat. 8 - 12 pm (not strictly) Try to get a fast review of wats been taught in skul and read ahead of the next class |
Most people will notice i hardly talk abt Biochemistry, well, thats because me saying i hate biochem is the understatement of the century. From my sec school days, chemistry has always been a mystery i culdnt solve. If i were a detective, chemistry will b dat one crime that will kip me awake every nyt. So its nt a suprise why i hate biochemistry. One things sure tho, i knew i had to pass even if i dont lyk the course. So i had to start preparin way ahead, so i dont loose my dream cos of CHEMISTRY!!!!!! I eventually found out not only is biochemistry simple, its in fact suited to my ability to cram anytin up there. All that didnt increase my love for the course, it gave me a leverage to tackle that mystery. I stopped seeing biochemistry as a mystery instead as that roomate who snores all nyt bt u just hav to put up wit it till u leave the damn University. Well, thats Biochemistry |
I have been asked many times by countless medical enthusiasts: 'How many hours per day is a med student reqd to read in a day'. My reply always is towards the fact that i dont blive in rigidity. I am of the school of thought that being flexible ensures maneuverability. Altho i wnt discourage people havin a strict readin method, i am not of that mould. My 'style' is variability. Usually i read 4-5 hours on most days. Some days i get so lazy i dnt read at all. And there are days i read 10 hours or more on a stretch. There will b days my mates will b buried in books and listening to my iPod instead but Thats my STYLE, thats what defines ME. Med skul is not a place u adopt peoples styles. Create urs, build ur PERSONALITY, as much as it brings success, then stick to it. |
Profcamsey:in physiology u learn a lot of clinical procedure. Some of them are: *Learnin how to determine and interpret PCV *Learnin how to carry out ECG and interpret it *Learnin how to determine respiratory diseases via spirometry. * how to determine a patient's blood group * how to get a patients systolic and diastolic blood pressure; and the heart rate There a lots of BASIC clinical procedures u will learn in physiology. And they are all important, cos u will always come across them when u get to the clinicals. |
Durentt:welcome bro |
Vcojuro:my advice for u will be to put all dis efforts in trying to vindicate a varsity into better use. Its not worth. |
Shabib:There is THEORETICALLY but practically it is very hard. What av heard is the new VC is not a fan of it. Best way to find out is contactin d admission officer(s) |
simba1:They DONT share a teaching hospital wit OAU. Is dat even possible? OAU's teaching hosp is in Osun while OOU is in Ogun... The reason u are gettin confused is because OOU's college of medicine is named after Obafemi Awolowo and not even the teaching hospital. The teaching hosp is OOUTH. As for it being among the best state teaching hospital? Affirmative YES. The only state teachin hosp i feel is superior, and dats my opinion, is LASUTH. Theres more to a medical school than the NAME of the school. Trust me. |
RoastedCorn:in addition, (sorry) are u sure d so called dullest are not way intelligent than u are. Ur post supports the claim. |
RoastedCorn:i am not the type that exchange words but it will be more sensible of u to get ur facts right and stop spreading fiction. Firstly the tuition is not even close to d amount u stated. Abt reputation, i dont think theres a scale for determining dat, bt i am sure 'does not have a good repute' sounds stupid at d least. I am a 300 level student of d school, so i knw wat i am sayin.... |
Realberry:i think all med schools av mean lects. They are lyk vampires that depends on blood for survival, only they depend on people failing. |
I have always been told med students are nerds and always have dere heads buried in books. Well true bt not entirely true. We read 60% of our tyms bt ever wonder wat we do wit d remaining apart from sleep (i love sleeping ;DI have always been told med students are nerds and always have dere heads buried in books. Well true bt not entirely true. We read 60% of our tyms bt ever wonder wat we do wit d remaining apart from sleep (i love sleeping dnt judge) For me, i love football. Well m an arsenal fan, so i can add i luv good football. Chelsea fans sorry, bt u guys suck in playin d damn tin, bt 4 parkin d bus, y'all good to go. Anyways in med school, relaxin wit wat u lyk is very essential. Its lyk chargin ur fones battery. Even tho i cant go to watch some matches. I update myself, youtubin them nd readin football articles. I remember some1 sayin: the best doctor is the one who can manage his time to bcome one and still not allow life pass him. Most med students see med skul as a prison camp wr dey are sentenced to for 6 years. Well i dont see it as such. Balancin ur tym is key, not gettin carried away is hell important. Enjoy urself by doin tins dat mks u appi, tins unrelated to medicine. Read a novel, call ur close friends, play games, learn an instrument. In all, it is best to remember med school is hard bt much easier wen u feel refreshed. P. S.: I play football too nd m gud at it. Represented my level at d Provost Cup, lost in d semis. Gist for later. Time to catch some sleep... Today's been exhausting. And for the physiology 2nd incourse, i got 75%!!!!!!! God is wonderful and i feel elated. Heads down tho, 3rd incourse is nxt month.... Nyt y'all... ARSENAL WON BAYERN.... TODAY IS A GOOD DAY |
Well d last line of my post was a lil bit (much bit sef) tongue in cheek. I def dont lyk phy sio logy dan my sweetheart of 8 yrs and still counting. More of her later. Anyways m in a very gud mood today. Guess wat ![]() Checked my physiology 2nd incourse, it was unbelievable.... Will tell y'all d score later ![]() |
PHYSIOLOGY IS THE BEDROCK OF MEDICINE. I believe physiology is the foundation of medicine. Knowledge of physiology is so important in the study of medicine. In physiology, you are taught abt d functions and normal composition of organs and broadly, the systems in d body. For example, how can a doctor knw if his patient is having an infection, if he cant intepret d lab techs result on the patient's white blood cell count. I have a genuine love for physiology bt d time for it is always affected by the sheer amount of time devoted to anatomy. Anatomy is very wide and a stuffy course. Lemme explain d stuffy part: Peole who like to prove their worth by saying by things they knw like anatomy esp gross anatomy. This is because its a course where there are big names to show off. This leads to pple giving little time to physiology. I was at a time guilty of such bt i corrected my self early. These were d topics to b knwn b4 d 1st incourse: Intro physiology nd cell, body fluids nd content, blood (blood composition, blood cells, plasma, etc.), kidney (nephrons, urine formation, renal failure, etc) and introduction to autonomic nervous system. I found blood tougher because twas bulky whyl i kinda disliked d body fluids cos i had to cram too many values. It was important to remember the values of each elements in d ICF and ECF (Intracellular fluid and Extracellular fluid). Kidney and ANS were relatively easier for me. Even tho i started so enthusiastic about gross anatomy, i had to brain check myself (do dat alot ) into focusing on physiology. Nd i fell in luv wit d course, much more than my girlfriend/fiancee/woman (delete as appropriate). |
TMIKNOW:truth...nothing is truer |
Realberry:eya, interestingly i am an indigene of the state. ![]() |
Realberry:wow, what school is that? |
Okay day of checking result and was told by a senior colleague he found from a NYSC assistant lect d highest was 66%. I was jittery....66%? highest? Cue different questtions. Could it be me? Will I even pass? Buh I tried na. The D-Day, I got to d board scared as hell. Wat will it be? My first incourse!!! Pple already checked. Some above average, some really poor. Where will I fall? I scanned d board....Where is my damn matric no...here it is, last on d page. Yaaaaay!!!!! Yaaaay!! I scored the highest. Dat was how I felt inside, tho was givinn a pretty calm outlook. Twas a nice feelin startin well....trust u need a whole lot of confidence in med scchool, nd startin well is the bbest way to START...dat sounded betta in my mind...LOL |
They say med skul is d hardest institution ever established. Well dat iss arguably true. Wr else in d world will u b asked to answer 500 MCQ question in 1 hour. Nd knowin wrong answers attract negative markin *sighs* My first incourse in med school was on gross anatomy 2 weeks afta resumption (topics included: Intro anatomy; Osteology of d upper limb (bones and joints); Vein, arteries and lymphatic drainage of the UL; Axilla (armpit) and content, includin brachial plexus (collection of nerves to the arm); breast. All that learned in 2 weeks (med skul no b beans). Well I had lil prob because I read a lot b4 resumption, partly cos of excitement nd partly cos I was adviced to. Well d incourse came nd we wrote it. Incourses are written in 3 parts: MCQs - a statement is made, nd u decide if it is true or false. Essay - u are asked to gv an essay on a particular topic or body. Clinical correlates gv extra points. Practicals (which I hate) - a steeple chase style which u asked to identify a body part or its function (even innervation). The MCQ was 200 statements in 1hr and 3 essay questions in additional 1 hour. |
Thewhizzkid1:anatomy of d limbs (upper and lower limbs) |
DrAdeolu:smile* Tanks. |
DrAdeolu:I was exactly in ur shoes some yyrs ago (m a graduate of microbiology). Against all advice, I decided to cont nd graduate. Even thoo its nt easy goin bbck to skul wen u fellow graduants are uploadin pix off their work offices, if u luv medicine, u will go bck. I wont want u to decide on only dat tho. Other factors shld include: Ur age and ur parents' willingness to support. Hoping v helped a lil. |
Sorry I avent posted a while, been avin flurry of incourses for d past 2 wks. |
Thewhizzkid1:Gross Anatomy, Histology and Embryology |
DrLazDevitan:this is an outgoin hot debate in my school. My view (may be biased) is that from d plain thoretical angle, Singh is more trustworthy (easier to crash-read 4 exams. Difiore is also a gud text bt I see it more useful as a guide durin practical sessions. As I said, I may b biased (I mainly use Singh). |
vitaminA:sorry its because I avent subscribed 4 data. Wen I do, I will. |
Thewhizzkid1:from ur que, m guessin u are planning on usin keith moore. Well, i did both concurrently cos i learnt from senior colleagues dat both r done at d same tym in my school cos we use d regional approach. So my advice is get to ur campus nd meet ur seniors for advices. Also u wi need to ask wat textbuks ur lects prefer. For example i was told dat lects in my skul prefer Sembulingam over oda physio texts. Afta d first incourse, most pple who used gannong and guyton had low grades comparably. So moral of my long story is contact ur senior colleagues, dr experiences will help tremendously. |
D day is here, me and other 59 med students in the cadaver lab staring at d mysterious bags on the slabs. "Hmmm" i said to my sef..."they even put them in bags, human beings lyk us". I must v cried a lil inside. The smell of d room was xtremely irritating at best. Then we were placed into 6 groups of 10 students. I was in group 5. Then next was us being introduced to 'OUR BODY'... Cue laughter and tears at d same tym. My groups body was a man (can i still call im dat?) probably in his late 30s wit gunshot wounds. I wasnt scared, no, scare is nt d ryt word. I was terrified to d point i felt i culd run hilariously away from d lab. Well i didnt... Lol We were not goin to do any cuttin today... Just get used to d bodies... "lesson learnt, can we pls go?" |
First challenge faced was THAT smelling room called the Gross Anatomy lab. Previous week during the welcome speech by the Anatomy HOD, Dr. A (no real names) he said we will b introduced d fflg week to d gross lab filled with cadavers. BELL RINGING : "OH no nt so soon... Dead people, how will i survive?" It wasnt funny... V neva even touched one b4, now m goin to learn how to cut one. Arrrrggggghhhh....xo scary |
They say med skul is a place of endless reading. Is dat a myth? EMPHATIC NO. The information u are asked to absorb in med skul is too much sumtyms it can come across as ridiculous. I remember some months to resumption nd i wento get textbooks prescribed by senior med students, sincerely i got scared. One of the textbooks (ONE) was so big it was worth being studied for 6 years itself. This was keith more clinical oriented anatomy, a 1082 page book with 9 chapters. Wuld u blive dat in 8 months, u are expected to knw 7 of d chapters, nd dats just 1 out of 6 of wat u are expected to knw. That is unbelievable. |
; chat wit friends. Have many of them. Bemoan the stress of med skul. Discuss abt football, politics etc...
