eshietweb: Having read everyone's response to the Engineering vs Medicine issue these are my observations, research and experiences so far: No one should compare Engineering with Medicine. 1. To be an Engineer (Engr), you need at least 4 years practical field experience which is after graduation. So if you add 4 years inclusive of 5 years of schooling then you see that for one to be an engineer you'll spend 9years. So one being a graduate of Engineering doesn't make that one an engineer. To get certified you'll spend close to or over 300k for the exams. 2. If an Engineer (1 Engineer) makes a mistake, Billions of Dollars or Naira of work will be damaged e. g The NASA space rocket that cost over10 billion dollars that broke down while landing because an engineer missed a single line of code for the landing gear. Also millions of lives will be gone e.g A recent malfunction of a power transmission line control gear somewhere in south america that could have cost about 10 million lives. While the cost in damage lost is always 1 patient due to the doctors carelessness or wrong prescriptions and by then no one will probe them and if an autopsy is carried out their association will start pulling strings from everywhere while the family of the decease cry out their heart. 3. Yes Doctor collects about 100k while serving after getting a job they get paid in less than 1million according to the national salary scale. Engineers earn more than doctors in the long run e.g Check out engineers enumeration in Oil and Gas, Mining, Telecommunications,Power, Manufacturing etc even in the medical field. You can't pay an Doctor 10 million here in Nigeria for an operation but i have witnessed a payment of about 50 million to an Engineer that help analyse and troubleshoota Gas well production design error here in Nigeria and the guy didn't spend more than 48 hrs. 4. The future of medicine is Engineering and as such they current Nigerian doctors are scared because many of them don't read or research to improve day by day with best practices that has innovative ways to handle medical complications that engineering has provided. You can see it in the way that the health sector in Nigeria is currently, they are so scared about adopting Engineering and Technology because of fear of losing their Jobs.
My advice is, if you are a Doctor don't come here to lord it over others that you are superior than the Engineer. You have a manual you work with that has been written down for you and the human body can not do more than it is designed to do. Give due respect to the other parts of Medical field e. g Pharmacy, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Biochemistry etc. You can't do all these Jobs on your own, after all your Job is dependent on all these ones. All I see up there is how better you think you are. Ironic you offer others an advice not to feel superior. If you truly love what you are doing, then enjoy it. You dont need to feel the urge to compare with others. You earn more? Enjoy it You are more important? Feel good You are the future? Love it If you however have to tell people you are betta than doctors to feel good, then accept my pity. |

Michael004: I do not need to download any book cos it does not pertain to engineering. It is not thermodynamics it Welding inspection. How will doctor not know what is wrong with his patients after telling him he or she had cancer or malaria. Or are you telling me by asking the number of children determines the sickness of the mother? Why confusing yourself sir? Please remain ignorant for the sake of everyone's sanity. Have a nice night. Modified For the sake of sensible people who might learn, when a doctor asks about your family history. He's not asking for asking sake. He's asking to aid his diagnosis. A brief scenario is Madam A who presents with vomiting and has constipation with a swelling in the stomach. On history you find out her mother died of colonic cancer. As a doctor dat narrows your diagnosis and you can easily send for a CT scan. Instead of bookin various tests. Uve narrowed it to one Another scenario is a Madam B who says she has a lump in her breast, she has 3 kids, neva used oral contraceptive, she has stopped menstruating and her mother nor sisters never had cancer. A doctor wuld see dz and doubt if dz is cancer. Instead he feels it culd be a traumatic necrosis, ectasia or fibroadenosis. Such a doctor would perform a cytology and save d woman losing her breast. In both cases, family history would aid the doctors in choosin the most beneficial test and saving the patient a whole lot of money. Back to you Mr Engineer, life doznt start and end with thermodynamics. Having knowledge abt oda fields makes you more enlightened and less of a ranting ignorant. God help us all. |

Michael004: You have not educated me sir, Why asking for the number children and husband before treatment. Are they part of the treatment. Explain this function as a medical doctor. This is simple question. And you couldnt get that from my response. Then you have your own agenda. *The number of children helps in diagnosis of what kinda of breast lump a lady has. Multiparous women (women with more than one child) are less prone to breast cancer than a lady who hasnt given birth. Every question a doctor asks is to aid his diagnosis. You keep shouting treatment. How would a doctor treat you if he doznt knw wats wrong with u? The questions help him/her make a provisional diagnosis which he can confirm with investigations like Cytology, MRI etc. I think you should spend better tym getting info rather than trying to put others down. Download the book i refered to u and enlighten yourself. |

Michael004: Person wey dey die and no won die will open up to you before na. Your counterpart from foreign country don't engage in such question. And they get friendly with the patient. I still do not get the relevant of that question. I have never been admitted into hospital all my life and I do not go to hospital except the day I contacted gonorhia from one girl like that. Even people told me to take harb, but I prefer injection, that was why I went to hospital. I still do not know the relevant of that question. I usually dont involve myself in threads like this as it acheives nothing. But i feel you need to be educated. Doctors get family history because of the importance of genetics as cause of a disease. Doctors arent babalawos, they dont conjure whats wrong with you but investigate. If a woman presents with a lump in her breast and a doctor asks what killed her deceased mother. You think hez just asking for fun? Hez trying to knw if the mother died of cancer related illness to support his suspicions. If the old woman you are sayin is coughin extremely and she tells the doctor her husband died of tuberculosis. Even you dat you arent a doctor, what will be ur provisional diagnosis? And ur accusation dat foreigners dont do that. Thats pure ignorance. Download Norman Browse Clinical Surgery. It's the gold standard for doctors over the world written by Americans. Check Family history under the first chapter and educate yourself. Its easier to rant off ignorantly on the internet but it doznt make you particularly intelligent. Educate yourself bro |

forreelinc: Ok so they aren't necessarily ugly, they may even be good looking but maaaaaan the way their beauty is over exaggerated ehn you begin to doubt your own eyes people like:
11. Denzel Washington
I watched one of them biographies on this dude some time ago and they said that there was this science experiment or whatever which said that denzel Washington is the definition of beauty and then I decided to see why they say so, I have seen denzel with a beard, with a moustache, with hair, without hair, young, old and what I see is a 6/10, 7 at best.
10. Brad Pitt
This one is even worse because I hardly find him good looking to begin with. I was surprised when they said he got his first gig on thelma and Louise because according to gena davis, he was so hot he distracted her and I'm like Wonder what she would do if she saw one of the Hemsworth brothers or even tom hiddleson cause to be honest I think they look a lot better than brad pitt
9. Halle Berry
This one na female denzel Washington when it comes to HYPE Jesus I mean she is not bad looking but when put in a line up with gals like Tessa Thompson or Meagan good or tia hardrick Halle berry is barely noticed, yet they blow her beauty out of proportion and even go as far as calling her a sex symbol I mean how do they rate that these days
8. Genevieve Nnaji
In Nigeria where we have Lilian esoro, Juliet Ibrahim, DJ cuppy, Rita Dominic and Chika Ike making us walk around with stiff pants, they still rate Genevieve as one of Nollywood's finest? Even the gal sef don dey believe the lie she go come dey thirst trap for instagram hehehe I don die
7. Adesua etomi
Ah yes the very definition of hype from her overhyped wedding party movie to her overhyped wedding to banky w to her overhyped beauty no surprise there tho I mean we gotta complete the hype trifecta right I mean she was so confident she even dangled her dry yansh at us on social media thinking it will break the internet or something you owe me the lunch I barfed when I saw that pic adesua.
6. Angelina jolie
Alright now we are getting somewhere. I be dey pity angelina say how she take dey cope with e ugly face and fallen breast na so icheck sexiest women in Hollywood I see Angelina name abeg which part of her body fine? Can someone help me out please? Hehehe
5. Kirsten dunst
Can you remember the Spiderman franchise from 2001-2007? Remember how you always felt depressed watching them because of the depressing storyline and how hard peter had it in life and.........c'mon finish it......that's right the unattractive leads especially Kirsten dunst I mean lawd I'm still mad at fox for casting her as mj did she Bleep someone to get into Hollywood or something? Just feels like a joke.
4. Reese Witherspoon
Do you watch E!? Have you heard what they say about Reese Witherspoon? Sexy, beautiful, dashing, glamorous, elegant. Reese Witherspoon? I bet y'all are rolling on the floor and laffing already I mean whenever I'm feeling down, I just remember that Reese Witherspoon is ugly as f*ck and doesn't know it and I don't feel so bad anymore that's how far from beautiful Reese Witherspoon is.
3. Toolz oniru
Loool I remember when I was at beat fm a really really long time ago and I noticed this really fat lady with an over exaggerated british accent and the guy I was with said she was one oap and I shrugged like meh all oaps are ugly only for me to talk am one day where my friends dey and I chop konk for head they were like toolz oniru is sexy and cute and I was like since when? Feel bad about her miscarriage tho I hope she gets better and all.
2. Cameron diaz
It is no news that latinas are the sexiest race on earth, altho anomalies like Cameron Diaz make you wanna change your opinion. I mean eledumare she looks like a truck ran over her fucking face what da hell Lol with the cheek bones and the eyes man this b!tch needs to put a bag over head or just do the sighted world a favour and stay indoors like Sandra bullock
1. Daniel Craig
My favourite bond actor but the ugliest among them all the same. When they selected him as bond I thot they wanted this rugged gritty type anti hero like 007 assassin only to hear say he is fine, eh? He doesn't even qualify as ruggedly handsome even with the muscle e carry come the franchise person go still dey cringe when they see am hehehe I know you are entitled to your opinion but mehn there a whole lot of bollocks in that write up. Saying Hiddleston shades Pitt totally has to be the most ludicrous thing i av heard. I can agree on Craig and Witherspoon, maybe Toolz but others, less so. |

mhizsuzzy: Best of luck dear
Little tips though I believe it is a university thing as medical schools varies in aspect of lecturers approach.
I was just like you surfing the net as if my life depended on it because I wanted to know how to ace this "over hyped MB" (note it's in quote ooo, don't mind my choice of word, if you fail it God forbid, the rest is history in medical school) I browsed how to read as a medic cos someone like me I no fit sit down for 3 hours read, don't ask me how I have been passing. (But get this, I don't sort and I don't ask or tell in exams). Well it doesn't go well with me as I was caught the first day I tried it, well a story for another day. I needed to pass so badly that I download YouTube videos on what to do and what not to do.
Ask me if it helped, I will say the tips didn't but the medical context did.
What I am driving at with all these boring jargon above.
Passing mb lies on how you use your senior colleagues, junior colleague, they will be helpful in reminding you of previous yrs that is if you are a lazy medic like me, your mates cos of group discussion, though I didn't have one cos It doesn't work for me. The senior colleagues really helped me. I owe them a lot.
Aim high don't be a pass student like me oooo Get distinctions nah so that this our very own drey's anatomy go form familiarity with you nah u grab
- Don't joke with your Continous assessment, they can be a saving grace. Was one of mine cos I fell sick during the exam.
-For physiology, you must understand it. It requires writing upon writing, abeg no go write off point join.
-Know your lecturers and their approach to questions this is the killer beat cos if you know everything but you know write am the way they want they will fail you
-Use past questions, this is the jaw-breaker cos with these you will have like 5% don't feel that mark is small bcoz in mb even 0.5 mark is important.
-Ask questions, interact, read as if your life depend on it and pray as if your life depended on it. That prayer aspect should never be omitted.
Don't thank me now, thank me later with an IPhone 7
See me forming oga boss for ditching out mb advice as if say I crest my own mb. Don't mind the joking part oooo mb is a very serious business you have to face. Thanks MhizSuzzy. That was some powerful stuffs up there. Dont think anyone could have put it better. Great job. |

Then Medical Microbiology rolled into town. Those who have been following would remember I made so many mistakes in my Block 1 leading to me getting a 37.sumtin over 50. Well, I was determined going into this not to make a single mistake.
The block 2 involves Parasitology, Virology and Mycology. Parasitology tho broad was very appealing to me and I kinda loved every topic; well, except malaria (weird, right?). Mycology, I found too easy. The fungal names just registered on first view as if they were my girlfriends' names (joking oooo). But Virology just seemed kinda off beat. Funny, cos I loved Virology during my first degree and I was a champ then. I was even nicknamed Viridae.
So why the sudden dislike? I concluded it was the lecturer's approach. She classified and taught Viruses based on diseases caused rather than Morphology. Kinda ruined everything. Well, I had no option. Na read I go read am noni.
Night before the exam, I got so tired, presumably due to accumulated stress and I was having intense headaches (My mixture of Cocacola and coffee most likely the aetiology). See bad market. I intended reading till morning like i did with Histopathology, but mehn twas impossible. Gave up and slept.
Woke up worried about Virology. "I didnt read Virology enough ooo God". "But it shouldnt take more than 5-10 of the 50 na". "Let me just sacrifice the Virology aspect and put finishing touches on the other 2". "I have been sacrificing topics upandan, Am i a high priest?" Various thoughts running through my mind. Well, I did little I could on Virology and zoomed to school.
Then I entered the hall, took my seat, offered my usual prayer (most important). 25 questions on Parasitology, 12 questions on Virology, 13 on Mycology.
Of the 25 on paraaitology, I felt i was very sure on 18, wasnt too sure on 5. Left 2 unanswered. One on Drancunculus medinensis and the other on diagnosis of malaria (Malaria!!!!!).
Of the 12 Virology questions, I was sure of 11 (suprising eh?) And left one unanswered.
I was sure of all the Mycology answers (13).
So in all I believed I got 42 right answers and wasnt sure of 5. In the worse case scenario with a negative mark of 0.2, i should expect a 41/50 score. Not bad... |

jargo89: My next incourse was Histopathology. Almighty Histopath. Even tho I covered 90% or more while preparing for the Block 1; twasnt possible for Block 2. Why?
Block 1 Histopath involves General pathology and deals with general topics like Inflammation, Neoplasm, Fluid disturbances, Cellular Injury etc. They were easy to read and not too broad. Block 2 however involves Systemic Pathology and is associated with particular body systems and all diseases associated with each. Phew. You think you know a lot of diseases? You havent met Systemic Histopathology. You will hear syndromes that you've never imagined less hearing. When you start hearing Kawasaki syndrome, Chediak Higashi syndrome, Churg Strauss syndrome or is it Takayasu syndrome. Sighs.
Then imagine the whole systems to be read. Pulmonary system and the pathology like Asthma, COPD, Bronchiectasis, Congenital defects, Infections (including Tuberculosis), Cancers and pleural defects.
Cardiovascular system and its myriads of defects/pathology including Myocardial infarction, Cardiomyopathies etc. GIT and its pathology especially the Large intestine. Renals, Thyroid, Breast, Pancreas, Gynecological pathologies and a host of other systems.
Now imagine having more than just a passing knowledge of all the diseases affecting all these systems. Histopath na die.
Well for my exams, i left out 2 systems that i didnt read much on: Renals and CNS.
Will this be costly? Costl?? Hell yeah!!!! I got into the exam and 80% of the questions were from Renals, CNS and Gynecological pathology. Horrible!!! I felt like fainting. Not only was it even because of my decision to leave out those those topics but also because the exam was tough as nails. Like, the toughest I have written in my lifetime. No kidding. Brethren, I left the exam hall shattered. This was not an exam. It was war!!!! Word was one of the Lecturers, Dr Mrs I, was miffed at us passing the first block like twas nothing. So she decided to dent our confidence with this. Hmmmm....well she did. No body; i repeat, no body came out of the exam feeling whole. Lol. It was like a part of you was lost during those few hours. Expected score: 50% And that was based on hope cos I had a pact with myself and God never to score less than average in any exam. This was looking dicey. |

The first Block 2 incourse I did was in Chemical Pathology. I must have mentioned before (or not) that I have no likeness or hatred for Chem Path. Its just a bland course to me. I had a 69.sumtin in the Block 1, so the target was getting a >70 score.
Well the Block 2 topics for Chem Path were more Physiology related (Endocrinology), so I was feeling pretty confident for the exam.
*Exam day*
1-20 Fairly easy questions. I was already thinking: H"ahaha....mehn i fit get 80 for this course ooo". Then Q21....boom. A question from a Block 1 topic. Wharisdis? I skipped, opened the next page and it hit me: 21-35 are actually Block 1 questions. Twas like hitting a mallet on my head. Who does this? This is supposed to be a Block 2 exam; to test our knowledge on Block 2 not Block 1. That should be for MB. Choi!!!!! And i didnt revise my Block 1. Most of it were already hazy. Okay, so if i was asked to describe PathPharm in one word, my response would be: English Language hasnt provided a word to truly describe it. This is not hyperbole, as I was stunned at the sheer amount of workload covered in 28 weeks. It was insane. You just have to be on top of your game, all the time.
During my Anatomy, BCH and Physio, my mantra was having short bursts of intense reading with a long duration of light reading (more like a marathon or long distance running). Brethren and sister, that didnt cut it in Pathpharm. It was a sprint from the go. You just have to set the pace from the beginning and finish with it. It was intense. No intense is too soft a word to even describe it.
Then Pathology, God. Pathology is unexplainable. How do you explain preparing for those 4 Pathology course a night to the MCQ and Theory. Hmmmm. Its not a small something. |

hagiosfemi: lemme rent space oga jargo THINGS I LEARNT FROM PRE-CLINICAL I had mixed feelings when I saw my first MB result, it was good but I wanted a distinction in physiology and biochemistry (I had given up on anatomy) but ended with one in physiology. I realized in Exam hall that MB is done with residual knowledge of what you have learnt, you can only crash read to pass MB but not with high flying grade (more reason I gave up on anatomy). Pre clinical courses are not hard but bulky, so average students can survive medical school. Here are the lessons I have learnt: 1. KNOW YOURSELF Medical school has rules and you must play by it, there are no general rules. To hit the nail on the head, you must know your status, are you above average or an average grade student. Don't deceive yourself, if you struggle to retain facts in your brain, you may need to re-strategize, you must reconsider (will videos help? tutorials?) but you sure need longer hours to study. You may need to change your game plan if you are failing your tests i.e friends, study group or even textbook! 2. IT IS A TEAM WORK Lone rangers find it hard to survive med school. You must interact with mates. They may have past questions and you will surely bite your finger in regret if you walk alone. Friends have stuffs that will stick faster. Don't engage in carnal competiton, those who top the class must have being helped by interaction with colleagues. 3. BE SMART This is my last point. I have discovered that lecturers are too lazy to set new questions, you must know the recurring questions and find correct answers. There are lot of stuffs to know, you must be wise to separate chaff from the wheat. You must also trust in God, favour is essential but God does not orchestrate our failures. Congrats Femi. |
