I just recovered from an intense malaria episode, and this morning, my brain resumed duty. I was wondering, since the chunk of drugs I took would passed through my stomach to my small intestine, then to my liver, and the liver is charged with detoxification of substances such as drugs, alcohol etc.
Wouldn't it be assumed that the drugs would be neutralized before it enters the blood stream

or would it pass through the lymphatic system, as that's the only way to bypass the liver and get directly to the heart?

Actually, oral administere drugs dont bypass the liver, u were right in that dey reach d liver. However durin dz first encounter wit d liver, there is a short bout of biotransformation which is also called first pass (hepatic) metabolism. This hence results in detoxification of (in most orally administered drugs) abt 30% of d drugs. This therefore reduces d bioavailability of d drug in plasma.

So to ansa ur que, not all of d drug u used for malaria will b biotransformed or metabolised in dat first encounter wit d liver.

In contrast, drz 100% bioavailability durin IV administrations...

Then the big day arrived. Anatomy was the first paper. We were to write 2 parts. Part A has 500 MCQ and 7 theories. Part B has the same and each was for 4 hours. Wit a 2 hour break in between.

I got into the exams, prayed and started. Well, the questions were tough but reasonably. But at least i was done with almighty anatomy, i never wasnt expecting an A in it...xo thank God twas over: that was my thought.

8 hours of exam and i av Biochemistry the next. Not funny

Days to the Exams has been the toughest period of my life (no kidding). I at least spent 20 hrs each tho reading. Mehn no be joke. I culd av gone for d easier route and trust my residual knowledge but i wasnt goin to gamble on that. I need not say, but brodas and sister it wasnt easy.

I sleep for just 3-4 hours daily while gulping bottles of Cocacola for caffeine to kip me alert. My day was composed of readin, readin and readin...

My MB exam....hmmmm...where do i start from. Now i knw talkin about MB is easier than facing it. The tension was palpable, i was scared despite my confidence. It was a weird experience. At the end it wasnt as hard as we all thought.

The results was also great relatively...at least more than 90% of the class passed outrightly....2 failed and were dropped out of the program while 5 had resits...

There were 3 As in Anatomy and 2 As in Biochemistry...no A in Physiology (more on that later).

Last tym I visited, I told us I had just written my 4th physiology incourse. Well, guess what? The result was released last wk or so!!!! I was chilling in my room wen I saw d update on my whatsapp group.

Oboy!! My heartbeat increased at a dangerous rate *Why does that still happen?*

Anyways I opened d pix of d result and as usual looked at d last matric on d list. "Ehn? Mogbe! Whats this? This cant b mine" were d words I could utter. Alas, not my matric. God I almost fainted. Due to d repeat students added to my class, my matric isnt d one at d bottom anymo.

So I scanned for my matric nd my response was: Wow!!!!....73.5...the highest. okay dat was cool, way more than cool.

I really appreciate every one's comment and it really makes me happy to know I can have such an impact. Thanks a lot guys.

The remaining 6 days of the exam period was for practicals and oral exams...

Them came the big day....friday...result day.

Trust me, most wouldnt have slept. How could you sleep knowin your fate in medical school will be released in less than 18 hours?

There were always goin to be 3 batches:
*Those that passed outrightly
*Those that fail one of the 3 and thus resit it
*Those that fail more than one and repeat the class with my set.

The thing is choosing one of this starts at your first day in medical school; choose wisely.

A Lot of people make mistake of copying people's template of survival in medical school; well, its not wrong if its working. But whenever its not, drop it. Pick a style that suits and favor you.

You cant read in the midnight, compensate during the day. You cant read alone, join a reading group. You find it hard to understand when u read alone, watch tutorial videos. There is no defined way to success in med school, unless you define it yourself...

But, stay away from enhancing-drugs and malpractices; they are vices that do harm than good.

Wednesday!!! The baddest of all...Biochemistry. Metres away from each of them, and you can hear their heartbeats, its that bad.

Anyways, the exam took 7 hours but most came out dejected. You could sense twasnt that easy for most. But as usual, some will pass, some will fail...
