nice one , I see a full conduit system of wirring .
May I know how much you were Bill for the whole wirring. thanks sir
I don't keep track of costs in piecemeal. Apart from foundation and roofing which cost I can say from the top of my head, other piecemeals I don't know.

It's my wife that monitored it. I just drop money. And of course, I was tracking the entire cost.

Isolated cost of wiring alone? Can't say until I ask my wife that keeps records.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: HR Said I'm Successful In All The Interviews But No Offer Yet. by Jarus(m): 5:40pm On Nov 28, 2015
solomikky:
Hello everyone,I'm just a little confused about a mail I got from an oil company sometimes this year, after going through the three stages of their recruitment process. Please I need someone to advice me on what to do.

It all started with a test, after which I was invited for the first interview, being successful at that interview of course qualified me for the final interview with the MD.We had a brief discussion section that lasted for about fifteen minutes, after which I was confidence that the MD was cool with me,with the thought that,an offer letter would be given to me.

Few months after, regret mails were sent to the unsuccessful candidates but I was excepted, just when I was already thanking God for taking me out of the pains of being jobless,a mail came in and turned my mood to that of the wife of a newly elected U.S president that just lost her husband to a vital accident.

Here goes how the contents look like:

Thanks for your interest in applying for a career with us,we are pleased to inform you that you were successful in our interviews. However,we would keep your profile for future openings as we have met the required numbers of recruitment for this financial year.

I tried to put myself together pretending as if nothing went bad,but sincerely, I really want your opinions on if I should keep hope alive, thinking that one day I'll be called to take up the offer letter or forget the chances I have with the company and count my losses.
There is high chance that you may be called up when there's an opening. Keep in touch with them. By February next year, send them a friendly, polite email asking for update. Send again after like 2 months.

Same group discussion and case study exercises, but different interview/presentation exercise. Business Scenario interview for commercial guys, technical presentation/interview for technical guys, where you talk about a past project you have done and you will be fired questions based on it.
BusinessRe: Online Business: Do People Really Sell Online In Nigeria? by Jarus(m): 4:07pm On Nov 26, 2015
At JarusHub, its working for us.

99% of the people that have patronised our services knew about us online (Facebook, Google, Nairaland and of course, our website, JarusHub).

One single post on a Nairaland thread earned us more than 500k in revenue sometime early this year cheesy

Interestingly, we have seen clients from Germany and India who came across us through Google and I was surprised they paid us without any hesitation (before the service). We thought they would be skeptical, given what they may have known about Nigeria as Capital of Online Fraud.

I think online business is here to stay. The trust factor is gradually being overcome.

lmao @ medicals coaching

interview coaching is a well developed career service field in advanced country, especially America. An example: http://300financegurus.com/coaching-page/

Check out mergersandinquisitions.com, an American website that specialises in coaching people for investment banking (Goldman Sachs etc) jobs and Victor Cheng, who coaches people for consulting jobs (e.g McKinsey, Bain, BCG etc).

it is still evolving in Nigeria and to the best of my knowledge, we're the only one that do it in Nigeria.

Yes, we coach people for interview based on our experience and privileged info. We have received clients from as far as Germany and India.

However, we cannot guarantee placement or offer. But success rate has been impressive so far.

But don't forget we call it coaching. We're preparing you and boosting your success chance like preparation is expected to do. We're not guaranteeing you.

This is just like attending tutorials or ICAN coaching center. It is not an assurance that you will pass the exam.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Apply For 2015/2016 Shell Petroleum Graduate Programme by Jarus(m):
Referral/Networking/Recommendation and merit are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

Referral can still be merit. It becomes abused when

1, Someone who did better than you in the selection process is denied job

2, Selection process (interview etc) are waived for you

3, Being given the job even when you do poorly in the job selection process

4, Being given the job where you don't meet requirements

These are instances when referral/networking/recommendation is abused.

Otherwise, it's absolutely in order. Referral will only get you the interview invite, it won't get you the job. I'm talking about the globally acceptable referral now. Not the one that is abused.

Let me give examples:

1, Last year, my company sent out an email to all staff listing 4 positions that are available to be filled, and asking for our recommendation, if any. I have a friend that we were together in my former company. I asked him to send his CV. He did and I forwarded to our H.R. Mind you, he had all the requirements set by the company in the email (Chartered accountant, 5 years oil and gas industry experience, project accounting experience etc). He was invited for the interview alongside 2 more candidates. He performed best at the interview and got the job. This is still merit because he has all the requirements and did well at the interview.

2, I got wind of another opening in my company few weeks ago. I had another candidate (also from my former company) and forwarded his CV. He had all the requirements. He was invited for interview but someone did better than him. He didn't get the job.

In well structured organizations, referral is used more in experienced level positions, not graduate position. Companies will tell you to recommend people you have worked with in the past and trust their competence.

It is a global practice.

Shell will definitely not do this at entry level as they have a well defined entry level recruitment procedure which is uniform globally (the SRD), however, for experienced positions, they may be doing this. For example, they can decide to bring one top engineer or geologist from Mobil or Total who is highly respected in the industry.

80% of the senior management staff in my company are from Shell and Mobil, mostly by recommendations and industry reputation (poaching). Talking about guys that spent 25-30 years in Shell and Mobil.

Your point is very clear

Everything you've stated is obvious.

But my issue is you trying to be a motivational/inspirational speaker...rather than a realist.

Virtually everyone here who applied for this job would put in EVERY OF THEIR BEST to do all right things in getting the job...except for the few that don't even bother to know the meaning of SRD but have written all tests.

Many people here research and study day and night on recruitment best practices... Some of us have come across ur website and read ur stuffz...pretty good stuff... But please be a realist!

I've read ur own story...you are also fortunate(whether u believe it or not)... Don't think it's cos of your (smartness/brilliance/intelligence) that made u get 2 offers from IOCs immediately after service... There is always an element of luck and fortune to reckon with.

Now, immediately after ur service, and working in IOCs, you have probably not been exposed to recruitment procedures in 'Nigeria'... That's probably why you can sit in the comfort of ur room, with a cozy tablet or laptop and try take away reality from people.

Some facts:
1. Spdc is just one amongst millions of coys that recruit...have you considered what gets in the other 99.9% of firms?

2. You mention NNPC... If I tell u what goes down in NNPC... You would be ashamed to mention them here. If truly ur friend is there, and u guys communicate as regards recruitment issues, I'm sure you won't be proud to mention that coy here.

3. It is true that no coy would see a top-notch, excellent candidate and not kill for his/her services... (I'm a personal testimony as I am currently with an indigenous E&P coy by virtue of an outstanding performance- when given the opportunity to)--But how many percent of Nigerian graduates belong to that category? How many percent of Nigerian grads are given the opportunity to show what they are made of?
Not everyone would be top-notch, brilliantly smart!
So what happens to the just averagely smart guys? They are back in the pool of the corrupt system...where people resume work everyday...by recommendation from one minister, governor or the likes... While deserving graduates are on Nairaland listening to a motivational speaker saying things they have no experience in.

I'm not here to kill people's morale...all I'm saying is that you don't have the right slander someone with the term "toxic mindset"... When all he did was say what gets in his version of Nigeria!
It's obvious your own version of Nigeria is a very perfect one without corruption in the system
I have never said there's no 'leg' in recruitment process. It is, and yes, quite rampant.

So should we now because of this not encourage them to put in their efforts? No.

Encourage people. Tell them their efforts can count. Don't write off their chances because they don't know anyone.

It is not as bad as portrayed by people.

Someone just entered thread and said "Shell have already known the people the people they wanted to take" regardless of performance in SRD. Apart from the fact that it is wrong, it is demoralizing.

And you cannot tell me every single person in NNPC got the job through a letter from minister or any other VIP. I told you the case of someone I brought to Lagos and accommodated who got NNPC job without knowing anyone. His brilliance and smartness worked for him. We lived under the same roof.

It is left for anyone to say whatever they want to say, but going to a war with the mindset that your effort will not count is dangerous, and telling people that is toxic.

haba Mr Jarus....
don't make it seem like shell is interested in applicants with the most extraordinary academic results.. although that is an added advantage but it's not a compulsory criteria.

I know those who made it to shell and not because they had extraordinary results as u described but because they displayed the qualities that shell desired at the srd...
I got your point. It is not their academic qualifications that got them the job. I just cited their past academic performance as proof of their consistent brilliance. Smart is the better word to use, I admit. They were very smart.

In addition, don't be intimidated by schools. I have seen a guy whose only qualification is Bsc from Bauchi Uuniversity (obviously not a first-tier uni in Nigeria) and passed SRD. He competed with guys coming from top schools in the UK and US, some with double masters, some with Phd sef.

SRD is a leveller.

I'm quite disappointed to see this statement from a 'presumed' experienced person/mentor like u.

What is toxic about that writer's mindset?

Is Shell recruitment not one of the only FEW coys that base their selection on merit?

What about others? Should I begin to name them? Especially the indigenous firms?

The reason for grad unemployment in this country aside from unavailability of jobs is the rot in the recruitment processes...all over the country! It's not a toxic mindset, it's a fact!

Many thanks to shell and others who strive for a better option...even though one still can't take learning points from an unsuccessful process itself...as they don't give hints on why you failed the process. They just slam you with a regret mail without reason!

Many thanks also to nairalanders for helping us manufacture these reasons shell refused to give us.
Yes, the mindset is toxic. Mindset ruins. It is called defeatist mindset: going to a war with the mentality that you cannot win! It will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The company doesn't matter, if you approach any recruitment with the mindset that your efforts won't count, you will likely not make it.

The fact that the recruitment process of many companies are not merit-driven doesn't mean you cannot get job. You can't tell me, everyone that works in, say GTB, knows someone in GTB.

Look at the people that got job by merit and get motivated, rather than whine that you cannot get. Look at the cup as half-full.

Without any proof or example, the guy just came to "lampoon" Shell recruitment process. That is toxic. It can kill the morale of many people. And it is not true.

I have worked in the oil and gas industry all my almost 10 years career.

Even in NNPC that is a govt corporation, I see friends - brilliant friends - get job there without knowing anyone. One of them I brought to Lagos and accommodated during NYSC. He didn't know anyone. He had never stepped into Lagos before. But he was brilliant. If you're brilliant (and admittedly lucky too, in some cases) you will get job.

It is very wrong to discourage people.

People should stop whining. I have a friend that, during my service year in Sokoto, he spent all the one year trying tgo get Sultan do a letter for him to take to NNPC. If he had spent that energy on reading the NYSC recruitment requirements, he could have done better. But he had believed his efforts cannot count and he can't get job without Sultan's letter.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Apply For 2015/2016 Shell Petroleum Graduate Programme by Jarus(m): 7:39am On Nov 22, 2015
I have a friend that got his own feedback within 1 hour after the assessment. He told them he was considering another offer and wanted prompt feedback.

He had just left the SRD venue and was at the airport when he got the call.

They told him that was the best SRD performance they had seen in many years. He turned down their offer twice, asking for raise in the amount they offered him, it was after the second raise that they said they can't raise it again and he accepted.

That's for Shell US. He's a Nigerian, my childhood friend. He has PhD though. He was 29 then. He's been with Shell since then.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Apply For 2015/2016 Shell Petroleum Graduate Programme by Jarus(m):
Huw:
You can say that again...
What they do is invite qualified candidates from different field of study just to make it clear they offered equal chances to every one and to make a point that the recruitment was just and fair but even before the interview, they already know whom they're recruiting.
My opinion though.
This mindset is very toxic. This is the reason why many Nigerian grads are still unemployed.

I have a good number of friends that got Shell jobs - in Nigeria and abroad - and they all have one thing in common - they're hot!

Brilliant guys. One was my childhood friend and best WAEC candidate inn Kwara state in my set. Another was the best student in my class in the university. Very brilliant guy from modest family. Another was the best student in my department in the set immediately preceding mine - arguably the most brilliant Social Science student I have ever come across.

Too many examples. A guy we lived in the same room when we came to Lagos to look for job and I was the one that even gave him N500 for transport etc.

Guys, pls perish that mindset, Shell gives you job if you're brilliant and are able to prove it at the SRD (and probably lucky too - given the post-wait list dropping possibility)
