PROCEDURE IN 5 STAGES 1, Choosing of topics 2, Choosing of debaters 3, Choosing of 5 judges from our pool of 10 4, Debate proper 5, Post-debate discussions NOTE: All planning(steps 1-3) will be taking place in this mother-thread, but special dedicated thread shall be opened for each debate, to be opened few hours to debate. W 1, CHOOSING OF TOPICS This shall be thrown open, suggestions taken from everyone, and topics arrived at by consensus. Topical and developmental issues shall be given preference. 2 topics shall be arrived at, one for first round, another for final. Or same subject but different angles as points of debate in first round and final. 2, CHOOSING OF DEBATERS This can be by voluntary indication of interest and/or nomination by another member. At the end of the day, we shall settle for 4 debaters for each cycle(month). Topic will also play a role in settling for debaters. 3,CHOOSING OF 5 JUDGES We shall contact all the 10 judges and confirm their availability on the debate day. If we have positive answer from more than 5, we shall use our discretion to settle for 5. Rotation will also be considered. 4, DEBATE PROPER Debate thread shall be opened at least 3 hours to the commencement, where the rules, brief Nairaland citation of debaters, list of judges, shall be posted. The thread will then be locked till 5 minutes to start of debate when the coordinators shall declare the debate open. The debaters can then post their arguments within 20 minutes. Then, the debaters will be given another 20 minutes to take on one another, fault opponents arguments etc. Then another 20 minutes for judges to throw their questions at each of the debaters and debaters to respond. Then we shall take 1 question from audience(viewers) based on first post, first recognized basis. Note that the viewer/audience rep is only to ask question and not endorse/fault an argument. While the debate is going on, any comment other than from debaters, coordinators and judges shall be hidden and the poster risks 2 hours ban from Politics section. When it's time to take a question from 1 viewer/audience, the coordinator will announce. Then the judges will compile their results and email to the coordinators, who will aggregate and announce the results on the thread. We expect the exercise to take between 2-3 hours. 5, POST-DEBATE Then the thread shall be declared open for regular Nairaland discussion and comments. |
dayokanu: After the debates, Can the floor be thrown open to insult people? If yes can you pencil down my name for that sectionDon't worry, it's only when the debate is on that the floor will be available only for the debaters, coordinators and judges. After declaration of results and judges packing their notes, the floor can be declared open for the bench throwers and operation wetie ![]() |
Which one of two things is the "best"? Do they teach people in naija comparative adverbs and adjectives these days ?
I tire o. |
Reminds me of Kanoute refusing to play with Sevilla's 888 jersey few years back, saying its advertisement of gambling company. |
Nuezha: ...and let the DC build another.......but NO!Lol. True yarn jare. ![]() |
ilugunboy: Ok...so during the debating process..thread will be lock for comments to non-debaters?Yeah, when the debate is on, only the debaters can comment on the thread. |
ilugunboy: Jarus & OAM4J.We have 2 options 1, Throw the thread/debate/topic open after declaration of results, or 2, Throw it open before declaration of results, but after the debaters have presented their cases. |
lateef4me: I sincerely hope the consent of these judges were sought before you guys nominated them.... ?If any of them turns down the offer we can always substitute |
For the maiden edition, I propose we have our Politics section posters of the years 2010 and 2011 and their runners-up as debaters. These are Ekt_bear (2010 PS POtY) Katsumoto (Runner-up) Gbawe (2011 PS POtY) Onlytruth (Runner-up) What do you guys think? |
Ibime: Do we have set criteria for judging?Sure. OAM4J will roll out the judging criteria tomorrow. |
My partner, OAM4J, will be unveiling the modalities and judging criteria before end of tomorrow or Thursday. Thereafter, we shall discuss topic and debaters for October maiden edition. |
UNVEILING THE 10 WISE-MEN!!! After 48 hours of extensive deliberation on and off this thread, taking into consideration popular opinion as well as our educated discretion, we have come up with this list as our Standing Pool of Judges: 1, COOGER: Cooger has been on Nairaland for more than 4 years and has been a valuable member of the forum, contributing to different topics in different sections. He brings to the table versatility and experience. He is also well-known for his command of the queen’s language 2, SISI_SKILL: Sisi_skill is well experienced in judging online debates, being on board of the panel of judges that successfully executed the Literary section debate in July 2012. She has been active on Nairaland for many years and understands the dynamics of the forum and psyche of the members. 3, AJANLEKOKO: Highly sought-after Ajanlekoko is Nairaland’s resident career consultant. He is a respected voice on many issues and not known for frivolities. We expect Ajanlekoko to bring to bear his acclaimed maturity and expertise in multi-disciplinary matters and critical thinking. 4, EZIACHI: Eziachi is a Nairaland veteran and one of the encyclopedias of Nigerian political history on Nairaland. He is a well-respected figure in this section. It is this rich background in political knowledge that Eziachi brings to the team. 5, PHYSICSQED: Physics is one of the most cerebral political analysts on Nairaland. He is also well known for his fact-based debating skills, a tool that will be useful as a judge in this programme. 6, E-GUERILLA: e-Guerilla is another well-respected intellectual on Nairaland. He adds to the team analytical depth. 7, IBIME: Ibime has been on Nairaland for more than 5 years and has continued to add value to debates from his repertoire of knowledge and experience. He brings balance to the team, as the other 9 wise men. 8, Ogugua88: Ogugua is well known for the logic of her analyses and presentation. She will be useful in spotting the logic of arguments in our monthly debates. 9, LONDONER: The lady from London is a leading intellectual on Nairaland, adding candour and colour to threads. We have so much confidence in her ability to dispassionately dissect arguments in his judgment. 10, TALINA: In my brief citation on the 9 judges above we have left out their tribe and region of origin for obvious reasons, but we are safe to introduce Talina as a Canadian. Talina brings international flavour and insight into the team. We do hope our judges will justify the confidence reposed in them as unbiased umpires. Ladies and gentlemen, join me in wishing these TEN-WISE MEN success in the assignment. |
goldiam: well its a good idea but i think d debaters should be given enough time prior to the date of the debate as this will enable them gather their facts well before coming out to throw their points.not that u guys will just come up with any topic a day to the debate and expect them to feed us with baseless facts. Ta santeThat's actually the plan. At least 1 week notice. The topic and debaters shall be made known not earlier than 1 week and everyone looks forward to the 'Super Weekend'. |
Wislet: politics section and its bruhaha.Noted. Thanks |
chucky234: Jarus! Jarus!! Jarus!!!My apologies, boss. |
debosky: Is PointB not the alter ego of the infamous BEAF?As Judge or debater? @OAM4J, Your mail never drop o |
ballabriggs: But twitter na 140 words now. How she come use talk all these things. ![]() I still wonder why people think everybody that writes in newspapers is a journalist. I don't have a one-day training in journalism neither have I been a professional journalist for one day. |
jmaine: Jarus, the ethno-religious dynamics of the last election made certain things possible . .I strongly doubt if Buhari good showing in the Northern part would have been the same if an equally popular Northerner was competing against him . . .He polled 6m plus in 2007 too, contesting against his tribesman, Yar'adua. |
ilugunboy: Haba..! that is not too much to do for Nairaland..just give me a low-down of how it works ke!https://www.nairaland.com/1049481/placing-adverts-nairaland |
A Hassan Martin Kukah presidency wont be bad. |
ilugunboy: Come....is there any monetary benefit as a panel member? If so, I nominate myself too then!Advertise on NL first. Let's fill up these 'This space is for sale' boxes so we can pay you e saanu aje |
OAM4J: They are better as debaters. See people asking if we started the debate already, thanks to themYeah. Check your email. I await your response/review to the initial list. |
gunuvi: Did I read Akeredolu saying Buhari is a much loved manIs he not much loved? No other living Nigerian can form a party from scratch and poll 12m votes in a presidential election on the platform of the new party. Not Obj, not IBB, not GEJ. Let any of these guys leave PDP and contest on another platform and see if they will poll 12m. |
PointB: Jarus, do what you think is right. There is none one here without vested interest in politics or others stuff; that they have not shown it is a different ball game. Let not the personal whims and caprices of some old hypocrite derail you from your noble idea. The old man, may write a million words a minute, but that does not in anyway make him a majority opinion here, so if anyone's opinion can be discounted so could his.Noted. Thanks. |
We are currently putting finishing touches to our list of Judges. Pls we want nominations for non-Nigerian Nairalanders. |
Gbawe: Jarus, it should simply be about Nairalanders who are civil, rational and that most members of the forum don't have issues with. That is what you stated you would do originally. If you noticed, I deferred to Afam4eva's point that me and others should not be judges. There are many Nairalanders like e-guerilla, Eziachi, Ogugua88, kilode, Sky Blue, pukkah, PhysicsQED, edo Girl, Ajanlokoko, Paddy Lo, Northsharp, HNosegbe, Coogar, Mikeansy, Sisi Skills et al liked by everyone. Why would you want to replace those likeable and fair-minded people because of the notion you are "neutralizing" extreme opinions? The very point of selecting judges is ensuring they should not have extreme opinions so that they can look at the opinions of others dispassionately.Noted. Thanks. We already have a mental picture of FINAL TEN, but we still want more scrutiny, to guide review of our initial selection. We will unveil the Panel of Judges tomorrow. |
Katsumoto: @ jarus and ilugunboyEven after the 'debate' on this thread? ![]() |
I'm liking this idea of having both Katsumoto and PointB on the panel, to neutralize two extreme points of views on politics section. Or do you guys think the exercise is better off leaving both of them out? |
lagerwhenindoubt: Avoid Sensitive and Emotional TopicsBy emotional/sensitive topic, we mean something like 'Was Achebe right on his comment on Awo?'. Now, tell me how a topic like this can be discussed on NL without e-throwing of chairs, even in the most moderated of situations, or how Judges will be totally unbiased. These are the types of topics we meant. |
bubadaniel13:I wonder why people find it difficult to identify a sarcasm. |
Nominate non-Nigerians too. State nationality in your nomination. The coordinators(mods) are noting the reservations on/endorsements of the nominated judges. By Wednesday, we shall release the final list based on the reservations/endorsements and our enlightened discretion. |
