High_Chief: Is that not a Federal road? It is a federal road, but d lagos state govt has adopted Badagry express for certain reasons and is actively working on it.Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr Kadri Hamzat has appealed to the federal government to reimburse the State government with the N59b it has expended on the rehabilitation of some federal government roads in the state. Hamzat who made the appeal in Lagos while briefing the press on the activities of his Ministry within the last one year further expressed the State government’s desire to continue to provide more infrastructural projects for the benefits of the people. He however debunked claims by some people that the State government is concentrating all its attention on the construction and rehabilitation of roads on the Lekki / Ajah axis of the State, adding government has embarked on the construction and rehabilitation of roads in all the local government areas of the State. The Commissioner listed the number of road projects that are under construction in each of the local government stressing that in Alimosho local government only; there are 26 on- going projects, 37 completed projects while the contracts for eight new projects have just been awarded. Dr. Hamzat reiterated the commitment of the State government to infrastructural renewal and development which he said is an important weapon for fighting poverty in the State saying that the government’s partnership with the private sector in the construction of high capacity roads is already yielding positive results. The Commissioner added that the Ministry has awarded contracts for the construction and rehabilitation of 176 roads across the State this year just as contracts for the expansion of roads including federal roads have been awarded. He further pointed out that the Lagos Badagry Expressway currently undergoing reconstruction and expansion is intended to open up the state to some African countries so as to increase the rate of business activities in the State stressing that the road was constructed by the State government in 1974 and later taken over by the Federal Government. He also stated that the increased human and vehicular traffic on the road and the consequence traffic hold up is also part of the reasons why the government embarked on the project. While speaking on the Lekki- Epe Expressway, the Commissioner noted that following the re- construction and expansion of the road, property value around the Lekki/ Ajah axis has risen remarkably. He also disclosed that government is set to construct a multi- agencies building at the vast open space housing a number of offices or office annexes and the public car at its Alausa Secretariat, in Ikeja. According to the Commissioner, the building would be a three- in- one edifice that would be connected together with pedestrian inter- links with the structure in the middle having eight floors while the adjoining two structures would have five floors each. Dr. Hamzat further stated that the building would provide inter- ministry networking, improve delivery of service and drastically reduce the huge expenses being expended on rented office accommodation for agencies of the State government, stressing that the building would also provide parking spaces for 600 cars as two of its floors would be reserved for park. Dr. Hamzat also disclosed that the State Government is also mindful of the need to develop an efficient water transportation system as a coastal State to further facilitate the movement of Lagosians from one location to another, adding that government has therefore, embarked on the construction of three jetties.
